Abstract:

Abstract:
The DAQ system of ProtoDUNE-SP successfully proved its design principles and met the requirements of the beam run of 2018. The technical design of the DAQ system for the DUNE experiment has major differences compared to the prototype due to different requirements placed on the detector, as well as a radically different location of operation. The single-phase prototype at CERN is a major integration facility for R&D aspects of the DUNE DAQ system. The facility allows for the exploration of additional data processing capabilities and optimization of the FELIX system, which is the chosen TPC readout solution for the DUNE single-phase detectors. One of the fundamental differences from the prototype is that the DUNE DAQ relies on self-triggering. Therefore, real-time processing of the data stream for hit and trigger primitive finding is essential for the requirement of continuous readout. The supernova burst trigger requires a large and fast buffering technique, where 3D XPoint persistent memory solutions are evaluated and integrated. In order to maximize resource utilization of the FELIX hosting servers, the elimination of the 100 Gb network communication stack is desired. This implies the design and development of a single-host application layer, which is a fundamental element of the self-triggering chain. This paper discusses the evaluation and integration of these developments for the DUNE DAQ, in the ProtoDUNE environment.

Abstract:
Abstract During a routine penetration into Hurricane Felix late on 2 September 2007, NOAA42 encountered extreme turbulence and graupel, flight-level horizontal wind gusts of over 83 m s−1, and vertical wind speeds varying from 10 m s−1 downward to 31 m s−1 upward and back to nearly 7 m s−1 downward within 1 min. This led the plane to rise nearly 300 m and then return to its original level within that time. Though a dropwindsonde was released during this event, the radars and data systems on board the aircraft were rendered inoperable, limiting the amount of data obtained. The feature observed during the flight is shown to be similar to that encountered during flights into Hurricanes Hugo (1989) and Patricia (2015), and by a dropwindsonde released into a misovortex in Hurricane Isabel (2003). This paper describes a unique dataset of a small-scale feature that appears to be prevalent in very intense tropical cyclones, providing new evidence for eye–eyewall mixing processes that may be related to intensity change.

Abstract:
Abstract Accurately forecasting a tropical cyclone’s (TC) track and intensity remains one of the top priorities in weather forecasting. A dynamical downscaling approach based on the scale-selective data assimilation (SSDA) method is applied to demonstrate its effectiveness in TC track and intensity forecasting. The SSDA approach retains the merits of global models in representing large-scale environmental flows and regional models in describing small-scale characteristics. The regional model is driven from the model domain interior by assimilating large-scale flows from global models, as well as from the model lateral boundaries by the conventional sponge zone relaxation. By using Hurricane Felix (2007) as a demonstration case, it is shown that, by assimilating large-scale flows from the Global Forecast System (GFS) forecasts into the regional model, the SSDA experiments perform better than both the original GFS forecasts and the control experiments, in which the regional model is only driven by lateral boundary conditions. The overall mean track forecast error for the SSDA experiments is reduced by over 40% relative to the control experiments, and by about 30% relative to the GFS forecasts, respectively. In terms of TC intensity, benefiting from higher grid resolution that better represents regional and small-scale processes, both the control and SSDA runs outperform the GFS forecasts. The SSDA runs show approximately 14% less overall mean intensity forecast error than do the control runs. It should be noted that, for the Felix case, the advantage of SSDA becomes more evident for forecasts with a lead time longer than 48 h.

Lester, Joel. "The Finales." In Brahms's Violin Sonatas. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190087036.003.0005.

Full text
Abstract:
Chapter 5 is a detailed study of the final movements of Brahms’s three violin sonatas. How do the finales function as separate movements? How do the finales complete the musical narratives of each entire sonata? Concerning the G-major Sonata, the chapter explores how the finale wraps up the sonata-long narratives, and how the sonata as a whole relates to the death of Brahms’s godson Felix Schumann. Concerning the A-major Sonata, the analysis looks at the ways the last movement wraps up the sonata-long narratives of how the personas of the violinist and pianist interact. In the case of the D-minor Sonata, attention is on the ways that the final movement differs dramatically yet relates to the earlier movements in the sonata.

Abstract:
Conant liked to recall that he became president of Harvard in the same year that Franklin D. Roosevelt became president of the United States and Adolf Hitler became chancellor of Germany. The University would feel the impact of what those others wrought. More than ever before in its long history, Harvard during the 1930s and 1940s found itself enmeshed in the affairs of the world outside. Harvard had a presence in the early New Deal: but aside from alumnus FDR and Felix Frankfurter, not a very conspicuous one. The Alumni Bulletin took note of the absence of Harvard faculty in FDR’s early Brains Trust, and in 1936 Conant estimated that only five or six out of a staff of eighteen hundred had been granted leaves of absence since 1930 to work for the federal government. A member of the Economics department, asked about Harvard’s lack of visibility in Washington, replied: “We are standing by for the next New Deal!” Nor was the New Deal popular with a preponderantly Republican faculty and student body. In a Crimson poll in the fall of 1934, undergraduates opposed Roosevelt’s policies by 1,149–704, the faculty by 141–50. Though Conant voted for FDR, he was careful to preserve the outward forms of political neutrality. But conservative alums soon had a Harvard New Dealer they loved to hate: Law Professor Felix Frankfurter, ace recruiter for the New Deal, eminence grise to FDR, Vienna-born Jew. A fund-raiser reported trouble with donors over Frankfurter in the spring of 1934, and Mrs. Charles Francis Adams, the wife of Harvard’s former treasurer, “quizzed” Conant “heavily on whether or not Felix Frankfurter was a dangerous communist.” Conant had ample opportunity to polish up what became his standard response to radicalism-at-Harvard complaints: indignant denial that students were taught sedition and appeals to “the glorious tradition of freedom which is our heritage.” When an alumnus wanted to know what the University was doing about indoctrination by New Dealish professors, Conant quickly changed the subject to academic freedom: “democracy is made safe only to the extent that a reasonably tolerant point of view is engendered in the people at large.

Fant, Clyde E., and Mitchell G. Reddish. "Lystra." In A Guide to Biblical Sites in Greece and Turkey. Oxford University Press, 2003. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780195139174.003.0037.

Full text
Abstract:
Few visitors seek out the ancient site of Lystra. Neither its unexciting location in the Anatolian plain nor its unexcavated mound offer much enticement except to the hard-core adventurer seeking to trace the route of the Apostle Paul. The ancient city of Lystra was located near the modern village of Hatunsaray, approximately 24 miles southwest of Konya in south-central Turkey. In 1885, about a mile north of Hatunsaray, on a mound called Zoldera (or, variously, Zordula), J. R. Sitlington Sterrett discovered a stone block approximately 3.5 feet tall and 1 foot thick. On the stone was the Latin inscription “DIVVM AVG COL IVL FELIX GEMINA LVSTRA CONSECRAVIT D D,” which uses the Latinized version “Lustra” for the name of the city. The discovery of this monument, erected to honor Caesar Augustus, who founded the Roman colony of Lystra, made identification of the site of ancient Lystra possible. Lystra was a part of the Lycaonian region of Asia Minor, an area bordering Phrygia on the west, Cappadocia on the east, and the ethnic Galatian region on the north. To the south were the Taurus Mountains. Earlier made a part of the province of Cilicia, Lycaonia was put under the control of Amyntas, an ally and client king of the Romans, in 36 B.C.E. When Amyntas died in 25 B.C.E., Lycaonia became a part of the Roman province of Galatia. Because the site of Lystra has yet to be excavated, little can be said with certainty about the earliest settlements on the site. The evidence of Hellenistic-style pottery and Greek inscriptions from the Roman period would suggest that at least a small village existed here during the Hellenistic period. Of the coins that have been found that originated from Lystra, none predates the time of the Roman colony, perhaps indicating that any pre-Roman settlement was not significant enough to issue coins. Emperor Augustus established Lystra as a Roman colony, likely in 25 B.C.E. at the same time that several other Roman colonies, including Pisidian Antioch, were founded. While all the colonies were established to help secure Roman control over Asia Minor, Lystra was likely founded specifically to suppress the Homanadenses and other mountain tribes in south-central Asia Minor who were hindering Roman control of the area.
