Abstract:
A cohort of 214 drug addicts with serum hepatitis and a cohort of 193 hepatitis patients without drug addiction were examined in respect of death rates, causes of death and a number of risk factors for reduced survival. The death rate was significantly higher among the drug addicts than among non-addicts. The annual mortality rate was 1·5% in the drug addict group and 0·7% in the non-addict group. The highest relative risk of death was 860 for female drug addicts in age group 15–24 compared to females of the same age in the general population. The most prevalent cause of death in the drug addict group was drug overdose (53%), whereas in the other group 66% died from various somatic diseases. Hepatitis or complications of viral hepatitis played no role as cause of death among the drug addicts, and infections as a whole were also responsible for very few deaths. For male drug addicts, imprisonment before admission and leaving hospital without the doctors' permission were risk factors for early death.

Abstract:
Objective To investigate the manifestations and incidence of headaches caused by heroin in Chinese women. Methods This was a survey study conducted from 29 June to 3 July 2015 with women attending the Shanxi Drug Rehabilitation Centre for Women (China). All study subjects were newly admitted and had not begun their drug rehabilitation. Demographic characteristics, heroin usage and headache episodes within the previous 3 months were surveyed, especially the presence of a headache within 2 hours of heroin use. Details of the severity, location, premonitory symptoms and characteristics of headaches were recorded. Results Of the 90 heroin-dependent patients, 74 experienced headache attacks within 2 hours of heroin use, and the headaches subsided within 72 hours of discontinuation of heroin use. Most heroin-induced headaches were similar to migraines and manifested as pulsating pain in 54 patients (51/74, 68.9%); bilateral pain was reported by 46 patients (46/74, 62.2%). Approximately half of the patients with heroin-induced headaches also reported accompanying symptoms of nausea, vomiting, and light and sound sensitivity. Conclusions Heroin-induced headache may eventually be listed as a new class of headache in the International Classification of Headache Disorders.

Abstract:
Internet addiction is defined as an impulse control disorder, which is very similar to pathological gambling. It is typically characterized by psychomotor agitation, anxiety, craving depression, hostility, substance experience, preoccupation, loss of control, impairment of function, reduced decision-making ability, and constant online surfing despite negative effects on social and psychological welfare. An institutional based cross-sectional study with a sample comprising of 422 college students (15 – 19 age group) across Kathmandu District was conducted from November 9th – 23rd, 2014. Students were assessed with a structured questionnaire and Internet Addiction Test (IAT) scale, which was anonymously selfadministered. The collected data was analyzed with the help of SPSS version 20 and interpreted. This survey depicts internet penetration rate was 97.3%. The possible addicts/internet addict students were found to spent average of 34 hours per week, compared to the 11 hours of average users. Male students were more possible addicts/internet addicts than female students. This survey found statistically significant difference between average users and possible addicts/internet addicts based on their Family Characteristics which consisted of variables such as economic status (p = 0.001), within family relationship (p = 0.009), ownership of computer/laptop at home (p < 0.001) and loneliness level at home (p < 0.001). Based on the interpersonal relationship at college, there was no significant difference between average users and possible/ internet addicts except for the relationship with classmates (p = 0.024). Overall, the prevalence of internet addiction among higher secondary level students according to this survey was found to be 2.57. As a result of IAT scale, the prevalence of internet addiction among higher secondary level students of Kathmandu District according to this survey was found to be 2.57. Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to increase the knowledge and understanding of what impact support-groups, such as represented by Qvinnoqulan, can have on women with drug-addiction. The questions at issue for the essay was: How does a selection of women who participate in Qvinnoqulan describe their thoughts, experiences and reflections of the group? What sense has Qvinnoqulan made for the women on a personal level and for contributing to live a life without drugs? To answer the questions a qualitative method was used and five interviews were made with women who participated in the activities of Qvinnoqulan. To analyze the data a social constructionist perspective and an empowerment perspective was used. The result of the study showed that the women were in the process of rebuilding a new life without drugs and reconstructing a new identity. Qvinnoqulan played an important role in that process and was functioning as a safe place in between the two different types of lifestyles; life with drugabuse and life without drugs. Elements such as female friendship, honesty, understanding and sharing familiar experiences with other women were important to maintain a life free from drugs.

Within the framework of addictive behaviours, a descriptive step is often the introduction necessary for any comprehensive step. Thus, epidemiology is a tool which turns out in particular when it is a question of considered i) the existence of addictifs behavior in a specific population and to measure the relevance of the notion of "harmful use" in nosography, ii) the relevance of use of one pathology as a model of study of addictifs mechanisms. So, we estimated at first the existence of addictif behaviours in a specific population "the pregnant women". It seems that self-reports are easily useful and provide a strong adhesion of the participants. The biological markers of alcohol consumption are not helpful contrary to biological markers of tobacco exposure which revealed a higher presence of environmental tobacco smoke. This survey also reveals that half of women in Auvergne consume at least one drink of alcohol during their pregnancy and that the major consequence of this consumption : the Fœtal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) has been found to be present in at least 1. 8 of 1000 live births. So this epidemiological study allowed measure of indicators of sanitary interest for a social and preventive Medicine and targeted programs for public health. Secondly, we estimated the addictif profile of another specific population "Parkinson's disease (PD) patients" in comparison to general population. The secondary objective is to better define tools at disposal. We noticed that the hypersexuality or the pathological gambling do not seem to be overrepresented behaviours in PD patients whereas dopamine dysregulation syndrome (DDS) is frequent. In prospect of this research, it seemed that reliable tools of evaluation particularly on hypersexuality remain to be developed. Furthemore to this epidemiological research, PD patients can represent a model to better understand the functioning of addictive behaviours

This paper focuses on research on recidivist female drug addicts. The purpose is to examine issues of employment history (including "legal"/"illegal" industry),crime history, the relationship between "occupation" and "crime" in female drug recidivism, and employment and after release from prison. In this research, in-depth interviews were conducted with five female drug recidivists in prison. Such interview data suggest that: (a) without employment, female drug recidivists are likely to engage in drug trafficking (b) female use of drugs may lead to drug trafficking in the future (c) female drug recidivists are employed largely in low-tech services or labor industry, (d) female drug recidivism requires appropriate government intervention in regard to employment issues. This paper presents four recommendations:(a) the need for ‘career skills’ training for female drug recidivists (b) appointment of designated employment case managers to strengthen the work with female drug recidivists (c) to recognize that the problem that faces female drug offenders often arises from the drug habits of their intimate partner (d) specifically on sex-related work, there is a need to ensure employment safety and drug-free environments. Delay treatment cause the genital organ damaged often happened to the women who were conservative and shy to be treated especially Asian women. Female drug offenders in prison were disadvantaged minority for medical care. Due to various factors, they could easily lead to highly infected of vaginitis. What are the factors of re-treatment of recurrent vaginitis? Are the factors drug habits, sexual behavior or hygienic habits? The study was using foreign reference literature and subject to reach the factors of recurrent vaginitis to the domestic female drug offenders in prison. There are 710 valid questionnaires collected from Kaohsiung Women''s Prison. This questionnaire were divided into infected and not infected group, For each group, there were 100 samples selected by random,The datum were analysis by logistic regression and DEA-DA model to construct predict model. Then, the differences of various factors of vaginal infections were studies. There are four major decisive factors to re-treatment of recurrent vaginitis; " HIV infection", "symptoms improved after use of drugs", "using antibiotics due to illness",and "age". According to significant value of logistic regression analysis, the symptoms improved after using drugs is the most influential factor. And the following sequence was HIV infection, the use of antibiotics due to illness and age.

Woldeeyesus, Bisrate Markos. "The Enneagram : predicting consistent condom use among female sex workers." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/19634.

Full text
Abstract:
Given the lack of effective vaccine or medicine, changing an individual's risk behaviours has been crucial in preventing the spread of HIV. Consistent and correct condom use has been considered as the most effective form of HIV prevention among female sex workers. Despite coordinated national level interventions over the last decade, a consistent decline in condom use among female sex workers has been evidenced in the Ethiopian context, particularly with non-paying partners. Thus far, no study has been produced that has illustrated major determinants of consistent condom use among female sex workers which would help in developing effective intervention strategies for the prevention of HIV spread in the country. In other countries, the Information, Motivation and Behaviour (IMB) model has been used to identify individual level determents of condom use. However, the researcher postulated that behaviour emanating from the personality structure of individuals could be the fundamental individual level determents of adherence to condom use and chose to investigate this using the Enneagram theory of personality, which was acknowledged for its heuristic value in explaining and enhancing self-development of at-risk individuals. This cross-sectional study was conducted in Addis Ababa. With the Without Finite Population Correction of the Sample Size Estimation Formula, the sample size of 350 was set and participants were recruited using Respondent-Driven Sampling (RDS). Using trained female sex workers, the Essential Enneagram Test (EET) and an Information-Motivation-Behaviour (IMB) questionnaire were administered to collect data. General Linear Modeling (GLM) Multivariate analysis was carried out to assess the correlation between personality style and consistent condom use among participants in the last seven days before the interview. The finding of this study revealed that personality type, measured by the Essential Enneagram Test (EET), is able to predict adherence to condom use among female sex workers and provided a new dimension for policy makers and practitioners in behavioural intervention programmes, such as Information-Education-Communication, peer-to-peer approaches, as well as health and rehabilitation services by using the Enneagram principles and universal growth process.

Abstract:
Females exhibit more vulnerability to cocaine abuse compared to males. Sexually dimorphic patterns of cocaine seeking have been observed in both humans and rodents during the different stages of the addiction cycle. While cocaine pharmacokinetics play a minimal role in driving sex differences in addictive behaviors, hormonal influences may be responsible for the reinforcing properties of cocaine in females. In particular, 17β‎-estradiol (E2), enhances performance in a variety of learning paradigms and may act to enhance the formation of drug-related learning. Paradoxically, preclinical work demonstrates that the memory-enhancing effects of E2 may also aid to suppress cocaine seeking via extinction training. In addition to discussing how E2 mediates cocaine use in females, this chapter provides neurobiological mechanisms underlying E2’s influence on cocaine addiction. Finally, this chapter discusses potential strategies for novel therapeutic interventions for female cocaine addicts.

Abstract:
In The Reformation of Machismo (1995), Elizabeth Brusco proposed an intriguing theory to explain the mass conversion of Latin Americans to evangelical Protestantism: Protestantism as gender strategy. Based on fieldwork in Colombia, Brusco argued that the Protestant Church is a female-dominated institution and that women convert their male partners to domesticate them. Enforcing the clean-living program of evangelists, Colombian women brought men into the domestic sphere as heads of household, and forced men to give up the male subcultural pursuits of alcohol, adultery, and domestic violence. Using Brusco's argument as a point of departure, this chapter describes conversion among addicted men in Puerto Rico as a male-driven—rather than female-driven—gender strategy that changed the relationship male converts had to their families and their work.

Abstract:
This introductory chapter provides an overview of the book's main themes. This book examines the ways ex-addicted Pentecostals work toward rupture. One strategy for rupture is the performance of alternative masculinities. Having lost credibility with their families in the course of their addiction, converted men present themselves to their parents and spouses as spiritual heads of home. They draw on images of Christ to convert mainstream masculinity into an evangelical manhood that is based on domesticity, emotional responsiveness, self-sacrifice, and spiritual knowledge. This contrasts with the rise and fall of one of the only street ministries in Puerto Rico to cater to women. In their bid to cultivate the respectability and upward mobility of its male recruits, the ministries adopted a middle-class, patriarchal model of the family, over the working-class, female-headed extended families from which most of its membership comes, ultimately limiting the possibilities for women in the ministries.

Filippo, Maria San. "Sexual In-betweener/Industry In-betweener: The Career and Films of Lisa Cholodenko." In Indie Reframed. Edinburgh University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/edinburgh/9781474403924.003.0014.

Abstract:
This chapter claims that Lisa Cholodenko’s work exemplifies the sort of ‘in-betweenness’ that resists and challenges established categories. Identified with the lesbian branch of the New Queer Cinema of the early 1990s, evoking both praise and divisive reactions, Cholodenko’s High Art (1998), about the professional and sexual relationship between a young straight female art critic and journalist and a brilliant lesbian artist/heroin addict, was controversial at a time when lesbian indies were usually lo-fi romances. Likewise, her more mainstream lesbian family drama The Kids Are All Right (2010) has been accused of compromise with heteronormative patriarchal values. San Filippo argues that rather than ‘betraying’ lesbian cinema, her characters and films traverse boundaries and resist sexual, ideological and industrial categories.

Abstract:
The article is the first in Russia to present sociologically correct (relative to the general population) and simultaneously psychologically profound results of 2 All-Russian Internet surveys: screening-diagnostics of the level of resistance/vulnerability to Internet addiction in Russia and its federal districts (2017: n = 3 007, ages 10-40); identification of words - markers of values for norm and risk groups (2018: n = 144, ages 18-28). Methods: Internet addiction test (A. E. Zichkina), self-reports on the duration of the offline period per year, 16-FLO (R. Kettell, MD self-evaluation scale, B intellect scale), ‘Short portrait questionnaire of the Big Five (B5-10)’ (M.S. Egorova, O.B Parshikova), ‘Existence’ (A. Langle, K. Orgler, S.V. Krivtsova), author’s questionnaire, Deception scale. Results: 3/4 citizens of the Russian Federation fall within a normal range, but only 1/4 have no signs of internet addiction. Contrary to social prejudice and statistics from English-language studies, Internet addiction is least pronounced among 18-21-year-old Russian respondents (when they are virtually active). Normally young people are characterised by the needs for Career, Care, the ability to Manage/Control and Influence events/decisions, anticipate internet escapism when they lose their Meaning, Wisdom or Interest. The risk group includes 8.6 % males, and 23.6 % females. Internet addicts 2.3 % (coinciding with global statistics): twice as many women (different from global statistics). Girls under 14, teenagers, men aged 22-25 and women aged 30-35 are at risk and among those considered to be Internet addicts. Adults in this group develop existential indecisiveness, have unmet status-related claims (specifically Respect) and a strongly overestimated willingness to use coping strategies in reality instead of virtually. Internet addicts are most numerous in the Central Federal District (4.6 %), with the highest risk group in the Far East (37.8 %).
