Abstract:
India has an age old fascination with the boy child and considers the birthof a girl as a bad investment in future. A girl is considered to be consumer ratherthan a producer, and this narrow viewpoint of the Indian patriarchal society haslead to horrid practices like female infanticide and female foeticide.
There is societal pressure for women to have male children and failurestend to feel guilty after giving birth to a girl. Such women are at risk of beingbeaten and rejected by their husbands. This can even lead to rejection by in -lawsand by the society as a whole. Keeping in view the above discourse the presentpaper aims to study the attitude of society towards female foeticide.

Abstract:
Introduction: The distribution of Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis among Malaysian healthy adults and their capability to produce enzyme hyaluronidase are less reported. Hyaluronidase degrade hyaluronic acid in animal connective tissue and facilitate bacterial spreading in host body. This study aims to identify the distribution of both Staphylococci species in healthy subject, the hyaluronidase producer among the isolates and the association of the latter with site of isolation (palm skin and anterior nares) and gender ofthe host. Methods: A total of 108 swab samples were collected from anterior nares and palm of 54 healthy subjects. The bacteria were identified through microscopic and biochemical tests, before screened for hyaluronidase production using hyaluronic acid diffusion rapid plate method. Results: Total of 139 bacterial isolates were identified; 68 isolates are S. aureus, 63 S. epidermidis and 8 other bacterial species. Staphylococcus aureus was highly isolated from palm (57%) than anterior nares (47%). On the contrary for S. epidermidis was highly isolated from anterior nares (53%) than from palm skin (43%). Equal proportion was found for both species in male and female subject. A total of 77 (59%) isolates produced hyaluronidase; 55%are S. aureus and 45% are S. epidermidis. Hyaluronidase-producer isolates are equally found between anterior nares (56%) and palm skin (61%) or male (57%) and female subject (60%) regardless of Staphylococcal species. No significant value was recorded for any analysis. Conclusion: Capability of commensal S. aureus and S. epidermidis isolated from healthy subject to produce hyaluronidase may indicate their potential as opportunistic pathogen whenever the opportunity arises in any way.

Abstract This paper presents an investigation into Nigerian female journalists’ definition of their role vis-à-vis the two concepts of women’s empowerment/emancipation and feminism. It examines the level to which the country’s media and social environment are conducive to feminist journalistic expression. The paper argues that although a good number of female media producers in the country, demonstrate a strong adherence to feminism and women’s empowerment/emancipation, they are hindered from fully materialising their orientation. These hindering factors include, among others, patriarchal socio-professional fixations, weak female representation at decision-making levels in the media, and limited financial resources to create gender sensitive programmes.

Abstract:
Dominated by LGBTQ+ and female-identified fans from various backgrounds, Tumblr blogs dedicated to queer readings of the BBC television series Sherlock (2010–ongoing) are a breeding ground for less-discussed forms of unremunerated queer labor: utopian, heuristic, and care work. In their digital fanworks, Tumblr queer users marry crafts associated with domestic heterosexual femininity (collage and scrapbooking) with established female fan practices (slashing and shipping) to articulate complex sexual and gender identities and navigate neuro-divergent mental health statuses. This article examines the shifts real-time digital interactivity and transmedia storytelling have introduced to viewer/producer power relations. Unpacking “queer cryptography” as a form of reception labor offers a feminist reading of the diverse modes of LGBTQ+ identification, kinship, and activism performed by queer female viewers on Tumblr, while questioning the vulnerability and possible exploitation of the unsanctioned affective labor produced by such a desperately underrepresented demographic.

We report a multidrug-resistant strain of Leclercia adecarboxylata which was responsible for a catheter-related bacteremia, in a 50-year-old female with an end-stage renal disease on hemodialysis. The isolated strain was an extended beta-lactamase producer. Based on a literature review of L. adecarboxylata, there have been only two reports of extended beta-lactamase producer strains. To our knowledge, this is the first case reported in Saudi Arabia.

Abstract:
Background: Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a common bacterial infection in women. It is very common during pregnancy and may present as asymptomatic bacteriuria. Escherichia coli is the primary urinary pathogen accounting for 74-90% of uncomplicated urinary tract infection. The aim of the study was to evaluate in-vitro antibiotic susceptibility among urine isolates of Escherichia coli and prevalence of resistance marker like ESBL producer and MDR status. Methods: Mid-stream urine samples of 205 female patients were processed for culture and sensitivity. All the samples were inoculated on culture media and growth showing significant bacteriuria (>105 cfu/ml) were subjected to identification and antibiotic sensitivity testing on Automated system BD Phoenix 100. ESBL status was detected by the system and MDR status was evaluated by standard guidelines. Results: Out of 205 urine samples, 47 samples (22.93%) showed growth of organism. Out of the 47 growth positive samples, 36 (76.60%) samples showed growth of Escherichia coli and out of which 13 (36.11%) were ESBL producer and 23 (63.89%) were ESBL non-producer. Escherichia coli was mostly isolated from younger age group (21-40 years) (61.11%). Antimicrobial susceptibility showed very good sensitivity towards Amikacin, Tigecycline, Carbapenems, Fosfomycin, Piperacillin-tazobactam and Nitrofurantoin. All the isolates of ESBL producer are MDR (100%) and 21.7% of ESBL non-producer are MDR. There is evidence of transfer of resistance genes for non-β-lactam antibiotics along with ESBL resistance marker. Conclusions: Escherichia coli was the predominant uropathogen isolated from female patients and Amikacin, Nitrofurantoin and Fosfomycin can be used as first line drug.

Abstract:
Twenty-four diploid red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) plants, from the cultivars 'Arlington', 'Florex', and 'Redman', and C760, a Wisconsin synthetic, were tested for 2n egg production by crossing them with tetraploid plants. Four plants were identified and selected as 2n egg producers. These plants were then crossed with a known producer of 2n pollen in an attempt to obtain tetraploid plants through bilateral sexual polyploidization. Thirteen percent of the seed obtained in one of the 2x–2x crosses were tetraploid. The female plant produced an estimated 0.14 2n eggs per 1000 flowers in the cross. In a second experiment, bilateral sexual polyploidization was attempted, using 14 plants which had not been previously tested for 2n egg production. Two of these plants produced one and two tetraploids each, representing 2n egg frequencies of 3.33 and 5.00 2n eggs per 1000 flowers, respectively. It seems likely that it will be possible to use bilateral sexual polyploidization to tetraploidize red clover germplasm in the future.Key words: tetraploid red clover, Trifolium pratense. 2n gametes.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Elevated levels of interleukin 10 (IL-10) were previously described for chronically hepatitis C virus (HCV)-infected patients. We determined by a sequence-specific oligonucleotide probing technique the IL-10 promoter genotypes in 286 Argentinean HCV patients grouped according to disease outcome. The GG genotype (position −1082) is known to be associated with high IL-10 production, GA is considered an intermediate producer, and AA is associated with low IL-10 production. We found an increase in frequency of the GG genotype in female patients who do not eliminate the virus (RNA+). In these patients, the GG frequency was 0.19, versus 0.10 in controls (P = 0.03). This association became more significant in those RNA+ female patients with elevated hepatic transaminases (GG frequency of 0.25; P = 0.0013). Additionally, this genotype frequency was higher in noncirrhotic female patients than in controls (GG frequency for noncirrhotic female patients was 0.31; P = 0.009). In RNA− patients, the GA frequency was elevated compared with that in controls (GA frequency of 0.76 in RNA− patients versus 0.48 in controls; P = 0.01), that in all HCV patients (GA frequency of 0.43; P = 0.001), and that in RNA+ patients (GA frequency of 0.40; P = 0.0005). We conclude that a gender effect is observed with women carrying the GG high IL-10 producer genotype. The higher levels of IL-10 present in those individuals are associated with a higher risk of an inefficient clearance of the HCV and the development of a chronic HCV infection together with a lower risk of progression to cirrhosis in female patients.

Abstract:
The objective of this thesis is observing the process of launching the small independent movie in the context of big film industry and its hegemony. We will observe the differences between low budget, independent, the auteur film and well known ’blockbuster' entertainment cinema products. In the analysis, we will not focus on the creative aspects of preproduction and production - such as script writing, film directing, casting, photography, and production design. We will observe the film from the pragmatic point of view in postproduction, film placement and distribution, from the last clip to the first introduction to the audience at film festivals. The complexity of the task is to make a distinction between defining free, independent, auteur film as a piece of art and expression, and everything else that auteur film is not, despite the pragmatism in realisation of each film.  This research will focus on film as art and as a sum of artistic teamwork, following its marketing and placement. Our aim is to find the factors that influence the success of launching low budget films of the independent film production in the US.  Analysing the literature and researching the adequate examples, accomplished results will give us an idea of forming a pattern or directions for successfully launching an Independent film in the US film market.  The example given in this paper is the authors' low budget film Boys Don't Cry(1999)produced by Chrisitne Vachon, where we can clearly analyse the way of developing of the film and postproduction activities of the producer, from the utmost postproduction margin, to winning an Oscar for the best female role by Hilary Swank, in the year of 2000. This film was chosen as an example in this thesis for being a successful low budget film with a strong women's author's identity, which finds its path in media from a marginalized queerfilm to a highly ranked film with great market placement. We pay special attention to an important detail - that women are in the role of the director and the producer.

The use of biomass as an energy gaining ground in the discussion on developing a more sustainable world energy grid. The growth in the share of biodiesel in the world energy grid has increased the interest in the cultivation and processing of oil, creating opportunities for the production of ruminant by the possibility of using co-products resulting from the extraction of oil from these oil seeds. Castor bean (Ricinus communis L.) is a traditional crop of the semi-arid, and is distinguished by the potential to generate employment and income and reduce regional economic disparities through the inclusion of family farmers, especially the North and Northeast of Brazil. This essay was drawn from two experiments. In the first experiment aimed to evaluate the effect of replacing the mixture of soybean meal (SBM) + wheat bran (WB) (72.6%: 27.4% dry matter basis) by castor meal treaty (FMT) 0.0, 33.3, 66.7 and 100% dry matter basis of concentrate on intake, digestibility, growth performance and metabolism of nitrogenous (N) in dairy heifers. The inactivation (for denaturation) of the toxin ricin in castor bean meal (FM) was performed using the solution of calcium oxide (sputtered with 90% of total oxide) at a dose of 60 grams of lime per kilogram of FM, in fed basis. We used 20 Holstein heifers were distributed in randomized block design with five replicates, each animal considered an experimental unit and the blocks formed according to the initial weight of animals. The animals received 2 kg of feed at the base of natural matter, which corresponded to the supply of isonitrogenous diets containing 32.48% concentrate (DM basis). We used corn silage as the sole source of roughage. We adopted the following contrasts: linear, quadratic and cubic for the replacement levels of mixed soybean meal and wheat bran by bran castor treaty. The concentration of ricin was reduced FM in 92.6% with alkali treatment (from 1004.6 to 73.9 mg ricin / kg DM bran). The inclusion of castor bean meal treated as a substitute for soybean meal mixture over wheat bran increased the supply of ricin (maximum value of 80.70 mg ricin / day at 100% replacement of the mixture). However, unverified clinical symptoms of ricin poisoning and the effects on serum levels of liver enzymes gamma glutamyltranspeptidase, alanine and aspartate aminotransaminase aminotransaminase (P> 0.05). DM intake and other nutrients, except for non-fiber carbohydrates (NFC) were not affected (P> 0.05) by substitution, while the consumption of neutral detergent fiber corrected for ash and protein as% of body weight (NDFap % BW) increased (P <0.05) from 66.7% substitution of SBM by FT and FMT. The digestibility of all nutrients and consumption of digestible nutrients except EE and CP had negative linear effects (P <0.05) the replacement level of FS and FT by FMT. Despite the reduction in digestible energy intake, efficiency of use of NDT for synthesis of microbial N in the rumen was not affected with the complete replacement of SM by FT and FMT. The average daily gain and body growth were not affected (P> 0.05) by the substitution of FS and FT by FMT. We conclude that the FMT can replace the mixture and FS FT-growing dairy heifers with average daily gain of 800 g / day. The second experiment aimed to evaluate the energy value of the bran and castor bean. To this end, we used eight dairy steers. The experiment was simple reversal, with four replicates. Diets were formulated to be isonitrogenous.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to understand the use of political messages as part of a branding strategy through a discourse analysis. The empirical material consists of two campaigns advertising female sanitary products; Always #LikeAGirl (2014) and Libresse Blood Normal (2017), with a purpose to understand the incorporation and the adaptation of activist and feminist discourse in these commercial campaigns. What happens to feminism as a political project and struggle when its key ideas and discourses are co-opted by market forces, and how this kind of advertising is used in the process of building brands. The theoretical framework consists of critical perspectives on Postfeminism, Counterculture in relation to consumer culture and Transmedia storytelling. The campaigns are understood in a Swedish context. In the analysis two nodal points are identified; Active/healthy femininity and Responsibility, where the subject positions within the campaigns and the understanding of the subject positions of the campaigns in a marketing context are explored. By formulating different (political) problems in their marketing, Libresse and Always has the discursive power to position themselves as part of the solution to the problem of girls and women’s low self-esteem. On one hand, the solution includes consuming female sanitary products or interact with the brand on social media. On the other hand this means that the brands position themselves as political actors, advocating women’s rights.

Abstract:
Menstruation is a large problem for females in development countries today. Studies have shown that around 40 percent of menstruating girls have been absent from school due to their menstruation. One of the challenges that need to be solved is the absence of female hygiene products amongst women, especially in low income and developing countries due to the cost of commercial products. In countries where the national economy is unstable or poorly comes a problem with importing products, it would be better if they could produce their own products so that the national economy is supported. Small factories and production sites that produce female hygiene products have started to form in some areas. This shows that it is possible to produce in the context where the product is going to be sold. One of the advantages of this system is from the environmental perspective, many of the local production sites use environmentally friendly materials and some products are up to 95 percent bio-degradable. The purpose of this thesis is to develop a concept for a sustainable female hygiene product that women in developing countries can afford to buy, this so that social effects can be enabled due to the security that a functioning protection can bring. To be able to do so a field study in Uganda has been conducted. During the study users and local producers were interviewed to find out what demands and prerequisites there are to create a female hygiene product that can be produced and used locally. The field study gave a deeper understanding and knowledge about both the subject as whole and the technical aspects to take into consideration when developing a female hygiene product. The study confirmed that female hygiene products, or rather the lack of them, are a big problem that needs to be solved quickly. It also revealed that the possibilities for producing in the context existed but was not developed enough. Through an analysis of the empirical findings as well as theories about, for example, material and production, six concepts were developed. The concepts and already existing products were evaluated and correlated to requirements collected in the field study. One concept was chosen for further development from this evaluation. This concept consists of a disposable napkin that is fastened by putting it in holders sewn in the panty. The panty can be bought as a product with existing holders or the holders can be sewn into the users own panties. The final concept has taken both technical aspects and social effects into account. Lists of requirements on material for the concept as well as the production of it are also included in the work. A prototype of the concept has been sewn and tested. The final concept in this work is not a finished product and needs further developing before being released as a product. More work need to be done on specifying the production and specific materials to implement the concept. For further developing, it is also important to have in mind in what context the product would be used due to the different possibilities and demands that the setting gives.

Abstract:
We have shown that repeated neonatal quinpirole (QUIN; a dopamine D2-like receptor agonist) treatment in rats produces long-lasting supersensitization of dopamine D2 receptors that persists into adulthood but without producing a change in receptor number. The current study was designed to analyze the effects of neonatal QUIN on auditory sensorimotor gating as measured through prepulse inhibition (PPI). Male and female Sprague–Dawley rats were neonatally treated with QUIN (1mg/kg) or saline from postnatal days (P)1–21. At P60, the number of yawns was recorded for a 1h period in response to an acute QUIN (1mg/kg) injection as yawning is a D2-like receptor mediated behavioral event. Five days later, rats began (PPI) behavioral testing in two phases. In phase I, three different prepulse intensities (73, 76, and 82dB) were administered 100-ms before a 115dB pulse on 10 consecutive days. In phase II, three different interstimulus intervals (ISI; 50, 100, and 150ms) were inserted between the 73 or 76dB prepulse and 115dB pulse over 10 consecutive days of testing. A PPI probe trial was administered at the end of each phase after an acute 100μg/kgi.p. injection of QUIN to all animals. Replicating previous work, neonatal QUIN enhanced yawning compared to controls, verifying D2 receptor supersensitization. Regarding PPI, neonatal QUIN resulted in deficits across both phases of testing persistent across all testing days. Probe trial results revealed that acute QUIN treatment resulted in more robust PPI deficits in neonatal QUIN animals, although this deficit was related to prepulse intensity and ISI. These findings provide evidence that neonatal QUIN treatment results in deficits of auditory sensorimotor gating in adulthood as measured through PPI.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter analyses Harrison’s work on FAWAC and the committee’s wider impact. Agricultural officials had weighted FAWAC membership in favour of producer interests. Within the committee, there were significant tensions over how to define welfare and the status of ethological expertise. Officials, veterinary scientists, and agricultural interests favoured productivity-focused definitions of welfare and prioritised physiological measurements of stress and metabolic conversion. Harrison and other mostly female welfare representatives successfully resisted the passage of weak new welfare codes and called for an inclusion of ethological expertise and wider ethical considerations in FAWAC deliberations. The resulting stalemate between “scientific” and “ethical” factions soon led to a breakdown of FAWAC decision-making, a stagnation of British welfare reforms, and a polarisation of public welfare campaigning.

Abstract:
Abstract Sweden has been hailed for its recent success in increasing the number of female directors, scriptwriters and producers. Published reports, panel discussions and a vast number of press conferences on the pressing matter of gender equality within the industry together with a 5050 quota have all put the Swedish film industry—and its CEO Anna Serner—on the map. However, the last couple of years has disclosed several scandals regarding sexism and discrimination in the Swedish film industry—just as in other national film industries. This paper sets out to discuss how female film workers (e.g., directors, actors and producers) understand and negotiate their experiences of male dominance within their work context. Based on a series of interviews with women working in Swedish film from the early 1960s until today, we analyze similarities and differences in experiences as well as how these experiences are explained by the interviewees. Their stories are analyzed by using feminist institutional theory to understand how policy, funding schemes and other institutional aspects are intertwined with their experiences. The paper sets out to analyze three themes: (1) comments and suggestions during production and post-production regarding female protagonists; (2) experience of gender trouble in the process of fundraising; and (3) strategies used by the interviewed filmmakers to produce a more women-friendly environment during productions.

Abstract:
PAI-2 is a specific plasminogen activator inhibitor most likely produced in the trophoblasts of placenta but presumably also in certain macrophages. It occurs in two molecular froms of 48 and 60 kDa. From placenta homogenates mainly the LMW-form can be isolated. During pregnancy mainly the HMW-form increases in the blood and disappears after delivery. We examined blood samples from 120 male blood donors (females excluded to avoid unknown pregnancies) and 20 staff members, 4 males and 16 females for the presence of PAI-2.PAI-2 antigen levels were measured with a sandwich ELISA using a polyclonal and a monoclonal antibody. The concentration was given in per cent of that in pooled term plasma.PAI-2 antigen was detected in 5 of the blood donors 9, 12, 22, 31 and 60 %. In one male staff member the antigen concentration was 9 % and in one female 72 %. Repeated analyzes of this last member for six months resulted in values between 30-90 %. Immunoblotting using a monoclonal antibody against PAI-2 showed a HMW-band of about 80 kDa.

In 2020 Virtual Scientific Meeting of the Research Society on Marijuana. Research Society on Marijuana, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.26828/cannabis.2021.01.000.3.

Full text
Abstract:
States across the U.S. are increasingly legalizing cannabis for recreational purposes (“adult-use”) through licensure of privately-run cannabis establishments. Legalization efforts have partially emerged in response to unequal prohibition enforcement which disproportionately affects Black and Hispanic/Latino communities. However, the extent to which people from communities most affected by prohibition are included in the legal industry is unknown. This study is a preliminary analysis of participation by race/ethnicity and gender across job titles in the Massachusetts adult-use cannabis industry from its inception through April 2020 (18-month time span). Data were extracted from cannabis establishments (i.e., licensed adult-use cannabis businesses that collectively form the cannabis industry in Massachusetts). Agent registration forms are required for board members, directors, executives, managers, employees, and volunteers across all license types (e.g. retail, cultivation, product manufacturing). As of April 2020, there were 4,907 unique agents (volunteers excluded) across 205 cannabis establishment licenses. Among agents, 77% were White, 9% were Hispanic/Latino, and 6% were Black/African American, &lt;3% identified other racial and ethnic groups, and data were missing for approximately 6% of the sample (exceeds 100%, as persons can be included in more than one race/ethnicity). Excluding agents with missing race/ethnicity or gender (n=347) and grouping persons at two-levels: (1) white or not-white identifying, and (2) male or female, we found 53% of agents were white and male, 29% were white and female, 12% were an ethnicity and/or race(s) that did not include white (“non-white”) and male, and 5% were non-white and female. Approximately 8% of agents held senior-level positions (i.e., board members, directors, executives) versus less senior positions (i.e., employees, managers). However, white males held 72% of senior positions, white females held 17%, non-white males held 9%, and non-white females held 1%. This study is subject to limitations, including that persons who identified as white and another race(s) (n=103) are included in white-identifying categories; future work will address this limitation. Further, all data is typically reported by supervisors rather than self-reported, therefore race/ethnicity and gender are subject to misidentification. Nonetheless, findings suggest that at approximately one and a half years after retail stores opened, participation in the Massachusetts adult-use cannabis industry skews white and male, and this trend is pronounced in senior-level positions.

Abstract:
This study investigates about how product personalization can be used to stimulate attachment between products and Sri Lankan consumers. Through the literature it was evident that, consumer involvement and the final personalized product, in product personalization can act as the main sources which evoke positive emotions, through self-expression, enjoyment and memories, to stimulate attachment. Three hypothetical scenarios of product personalization followed by online questionnaires about the experience were created to verify these findings of literature. The feeling of attachment was evident towards these personalized products as discovered through literature, especially in the responses of female participants. It was also evident that they would most likely to protect and use the product for a longer time than male participants. Several methods providing personalization options to stimulate long term attachment were identified together with the literature and primary data. Additionally, providing adequate options to personalize the product to their satisfaction, requirement of less technical knowledge in personalization process and already having a need of personalizing the primary functionality of the product were identified to be promoting the feeling of attachment.

Abstract:
The objective of the work presented in this paper is to enable production of large, complex components on rapid prototyping (RP) machines whose build volume is less than the size of the desired component. Such oversized parts can be produced as fabrications if a suitable subdivision can be generated. The methodology presented here creates a decomposition designed for both Rapid Prototyping (DFRP) and assembly (DFA). Any component can be subdivided by an array of orthogonal planes but the shapes resulting from such a brute force approach could have geometries that are difficult to produce accurately on many rapid prototyping systems. Typically, complications will arise when features have insufficient strength to withstand finishing processes or have a cross-section prone to distortion (e.g. warping) during the build process (e.g. thin sections and cusps). Consequently, the method proposed for partitioning considers potential manufacturing problems and modifies the boundaries of individual components where necessary. As part of the decomposition process, the system also generates complimentary male/female (i.e. matching protrusion/depression) assembly features at the interface between the component parts in order to improve the integrity of the final component.

Abstract:
Recent studies have demonstrated that deep learning models can discriminate based on protected classes like race and gender. In this work, we evaluate bias present in deepfake datasets and detection models across protected subgroups. Using facial datasets balanced by race and gender, we examine three popular deepfake detectors and find large disparities in predictive performances across races, with up to 10.7% difference in error rate between subgroups. A closer look reveals that the widely used FaceForensics++ dataset is overwhelmingly composed of Caucasian subjects, with the majority being female Caucasians. Our investigation of the racial distribution of deepfakes reveals that the methods used to create deepfakes as positive training signals tend to produce ``irregular" faces - when a person’s face is swapped onto another person of a different race or gender. This causes detectors to learn spurious correlations between the foreground faces and fakeness. Moreover, when detectors are trained with the Blended Image (BI) dataset from Face X-Rays, we find that those detectors develop systematic discrimination towards certain racial subgroups, primarily female Asians.

Gandini, Camilla, Andrea Monje Silva, and Pablo Guerrero. Gender and Transport in Haiti: Gender Diagnostic and Gender Action Plan. Edited by Amanda Beaujon Marin. Inter-American Development Bank, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0003069.

Full text
Abstract:
This technical note encompasses Haiti's gender assessment, evaluates the success of gender specific actions implemented between 2011-2017, and presents a Gender and Transport Action Plan (GAP). The GAPs main aim is to guide investments in Haiti's transport sector in conceptualizing and designing gender-sensitive transport projects. By proposing specific gender actions and outcomes, the GAP establishes a clear path to integrate a gender dimension into operations design, implementation and, monitoring and evaluation. The GAP presents an overall plan to support the development of Haitian women. However, it focuses in the needs of women as transport services users and devotes specific attention to two female sub-groups, comprised by Haitian women engaged in informal trade of local and regional products. These women are known as Madan Sara (MS), and local female mango producers and traders (MPT). The decision of focusing on MS is related to their vital role in the Haitian local labor market and the peculiarity of their work, which has specific transport needs. Understanding and addressing these female groups transport constrains could strategically improve the outcomes of upcoming transport investments and bring more benefits to its beneficiaries.

Gender mainstreaming in local potato seed system in Georgia. International Potato Center, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.4160/9789290605645.

Full text
Abstract:
This report presents the study findings associated with the project “Enhancing Rural Livelihoods in Georgia: Introducing Integrated Seed Health Approaches to Local Potato Seed Systems” in Georgia. It also incorporates information from the results of gender training conducted within the framework of the USAID Potato Program in Georgia. The study had three major aims: 1) to understand the gender-related opportunities and constraints impacting the participation of men and women in potato seed systems in Georgia; 2) to test the multistakeholder framework for intervening in root, tuber, and banana (RTB) seed systems as a means to understand the systems themselves and the possibilities of improving gender-related interventions in the potato seed system; and 3) to develop farmers’ leadership skills to facilitate women’s active involvement in project activities. Results of the project assessment identified certain constraints on gender mainstreaming in the potato seed system: a low level of female participation in decision-making processes, women’s limited access to finances that would enable their greater involvement in larger scale potato farming, and a low awareness of potato seed systems and of possible female involvement in associated activities. Significantly, the perception of gender roles and stereotypes differs from region to region in Georgia; this difference is quite pronounced in the target municipalities of Kazbegi, Marneuli, and Akhalkalaki, with the last two having populations of ethnic minorities (Azeri and Armenian, respectively). For example, in Marneuli, although women are actively involved in potato production, they are not considered farmers but mainly as assistants to farmers, who are men. This type of diversity (or lack thereof) results in a different understanding of gender mainstreaming in the potato seed system as well. Based on the training results obtained in three target regions—Akhalkalaki, Akhaltsikhe, and Marneuli—it is evident that women are keen on learning new technologies and on acquiring updated agricultural information, including on potato production. It is also clear that women spend as much time as men do on farming activities such as potato production, particularly in weeding and harvesting. However, women are heavily burdened with domestic work, and they are not major decision-makers with regard to potato variety selection, agricultural investments, and product sales, nor with the inclusion of participants in any training provided. Involving women in project activities will lead to greater efficiency in the potato production environment, as women’s increased knowledge will certainly contribute to an improved production process, and their new ideas will help to improve existing production systems, through which women could also gain confidence and power. As a general recommendation, it is extremely important to develop equitable seed systems that take into consideration, among other factors, social context and the cultural aspects of local communities. Thus, understanding male and female farmers’ knowledge may promote the development of seed systems that are sustainable and responsive to farmers’ needs and capacities.
