Engorged Ixodes ricinus nymphs collected from sheep resident in an upland UK field site were significantly lighter than nymphs that engorged on previously tick-naïve sheep, indicating that site-resident sheep continually exposed to ticks acquired anti-tick resistance. The weights of engorged nymphs that fed on naturally tick-resistant sheep increased significantly, however, when increasingly high numbers of adult female ticks fed on the sheep during seasonal peaks of tick activity. We reviewed three hypotheses of intersexual segregation (predation-risk, forage-selection, and activity-budget hypotheses) to determine if they also explained intrasexual segregation of female Stone’s sheep. We have shown a sex-specific effect of fetal programming on Na+ excretion in adult sheep. The site of this effect in the kidney is unknown. Therefore, we tested the hypothesis that renal proximal tubule cells (RPTCs) from adult male sheep exposed to betamethasone (Beta) before birth have greater Na+ uptake than do RPTCs from vehicle-exposed male sheep and that RPTCs from female sheep similarly exposed are not influenced by antenatal Beta. In isolated RPTCs from 1- to 1.5-yr-old male and female sheep, we measured Na+ uptake under basal conditions and after stimulation with ANG II. To gain insig

Lambs and yearlings gained mass linearly from June to September, while absolute mass gain of older sheep was faster in June–July than in August–September. Seasonal changes in voluntary food intake (VFI) are seen in various species, including sheep. This paper reviews recent work in this area, especially in relation to alterations in the expression of appetite-regulating peptides in the brain of the sheep. Work in the hamster is also reviewed because this is another species in which VFI is regulated by photoperiod. In normally grazing sheep, appetite is maximal in the late summer/early autumn and minimal in spring. This appears to be owing to increased expression of the orexigenic peptide, neuropeptide Y. Similar results are obtained in sheep tha

Many populations of bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) occur at low densities and in a metapopulation structure. Female sheep do not frequently show overt dominance displays while grazing on pasture. This has led to the conclusion that, for female sheep, dominance at pasture is of little importance. While sheep show few agonistic interactions, they do make clear and consistent choices of who they graze close to. This experiment was designed to answer the question whether these choices reflect the underlying dominance relationships between individuals, potentially being the reason for the low level of agonistic interactions on pasture.
