This article interrogates what appears to be an inconsistency – the enduring prevalence of Christianity and the surge of gender-based violence (henceforth GBV) in Botswana, particularly as evidenced by murder-suicides. It investigates the possibility of a connection between Christianity and GBV. To search for such a connection, I used a feminist analytical approach to analyse the text of Hosea, Christian/Biblical teachings relating to gender and traditional Setswana socialisation. The book of Hosea, some Biblical teachings and some aspects of Setswana culture separate men and women in dualisti

Lois Roden (1905–1986) asserted herself as prophet of the Branch Davidians following the death of her husband, Branch Davidian founder Ben Roden (1902–1978), and she would lead the group from 1978 to 1983. In support of her authority as prophet she introduced two progressive ideas to the Branch Davidians—the feminine nature of God and the legitimacy of women's religious leadership. Following the example set by Davidian founder Victor Houteff (1885–1955) of publishing church teaching as a means of evangelization, Lois Roden in 1980 created the journal SHEkinah to reprint newspaper and other art

Feminism’s contribution to homiletics so far has arguably been restricted to exploring gender difference in preaching. In 2014, however, Jennifer Copeland identified a need not merely to ‘include women “in the company of preachers” but to craft a new register for the preaching event’. This article considers what that new register might be and how it might be taught in the academy. It defines preaching as ‘the art of engaging the people of God in their shared narrative by creatively and hospitably inviting them into an exploration of biblical text, by means of which, corporately and individuall

Feminist theology approaches the biblical teaching of the fall with a non-historical or traditional interpretation. The biblical teaching suggests that the primordial couple sinned by eating the forbidden fruit from the tree that God prohibited (Gn 3:1–24). Additionally, the woman is blamed because she functions as a femme fatale who enticed Adam to eat the fruit. Writers within the feminist and non-feminist theology argue that the so-called ‘Yahwist’ is responsible for a patriarchal view that is evident in Genesis 3. Ultimately, male authors and interpreters of the Bible crafted a narrative t

Abstract:
This chapter examines the origins, themes, and actions of Catholic feminism in the United States. It begins with an overview of Catholic teachings on women and then provides an account of the early voices and organizations that challenged these views and proposed biblical gender equality. The chapter summarizes the ideas of feminist theologies, particularly the work of Mary Daly and Rosemary Radford Ruether. It then explores several distinctive strategies of resistance, including actions for the ordination of women, the Roman Catholic Womenpriest movement, the emergence of Women-Church groups that practice inclusive liturgies and worship, and organizations that promoted diverse Catholic perspectives on contraception and reproductive rights.
