Full textThis thesis aims to study one of the flagship publications of the Spanish transition, the magazine Vindicación Feminista. Established a few months after the death of the dictator Francisco Franco, the publication brings together some of the most important figures of the Catalan intellectual community as well as women with prestigious careers and long-standing anti-Franco activists. The magazine stands out both for the quality and diversity of the subjects discussed, as well as its refined aesthetic and focus on women’s struggles around the world. We submit that the existence of such cultural artefact, which was already consolidated in 1976 and 1977 and supported a radical feminist school of thought, emerged thanks to extensive groundwork laid by feminists during the dictatorship. An examination of the biographies of Vindicación collaborators, and the ties among its editors, other collectives and foreign magazines make it possible to identify the existence of a feminist avant-garde community and to place the Spanish feminist movement, and in particular its radical stream, within the framework of a larger, transnational phenomenon, the so-called “second-wave feminism”. Because Vindicación Feminista also takes an active part in the fight for the restoration of democratic liberties, it can also be interpreted as an anti-Francoist magazine strictly speaking. Indeed, the magazine’s central narrative lies at the cross-roads of these two traditions: second-wave feminism and anti-Franco resistance
Necula, Simona Mihaela. "Controverses autour du Deuxième sexe de Simone de Beauvoir." Paris, EHESS, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012EHES0072.
Full textThe publication of The Second Sex by Simone de Beauvoir (1949) generated a lot of reactions among intellectuals worldwide. Feminists, historians, sociologists, writers and philosophers have reacted since its publication, in debates more or less known, commenting on Beauvoir's thesis as well as on the reception of her book. Beauvoir’s most often cited thesis is: "One is not born a woman, one becomes one. " The objective of our research was to answer the following question: what do the controversies around The Second Sex tell us about the social, political and religious world that shelters them, what do they tell us about the representations of women, how do they change them? To answer this research question we made four case studies that correspond to four essential moments in the debates around the reception of The Second Sex: the first moment is the scandal of the publication of The Second Sex, in 1949; the second time is the year 1956 with the rise of movements of new feminist militants and the inclusion of Beauvoir’s book in the “Index Librorum Prohibitorum” of the Holy Office in Rome; the third moment is the year 1970 (the '68 of women) with the creation of the Women's Liberation Movement (MLF); the last choice is the year 1999 with the fiftieth anniversary of The Second Sex. At the end of each chapter we detailed the changes induced by the controversies analyzed on the representations of women and even of Beauvoir herself. The method used in the research is that of the sociological analysis of controversies integrated by historians of science studies in the field of intellectual history

Full textThe punk movement has often been considered the first in American popular music to include a feminist message. However, this dissertation aims at demonstrating that such a message already existed in popular music between 1967 and 1976, as many female singers and musicians took inspiration from the second-wave feminist movement or actively participated in it. This study focuses in particular on the musical careers of Nina Simone, Yoko Ono, Betty Davis and Janis Joplin, and analyses their albums and covers, their concerts and their posters, or interviews given by artists. This work first sheds light on the direct involvement of female singers and musicians in the American second-wave feminist movement. It analyzes the complex dynamics between a movement that has regularly been accused of racism and classism, and artists who linked their career with an involvement in the social movements of their time. The way they dealt with the music industry, the press, and fans is another aspect of their feminist approach. The artists’ image then constitutes a key source of struggles, and these women managed to utilize the feminist figure of the witch to empower themselves by claiming their otherness in the public and private spheres
Valencia, Suárez Claudia Janeth. "L'influence de Simone de Beauvoir et du Deuxième sexe sur le féminisme en Colombie : le cas du groupe Mujer y Societad." Electronic Thesis or Diss., Paris 8, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019PA080046.
Full textThe main objective of this PhD thesis is to determine whether the feminists of the group Mujer y Sociedad (Women and Society) of the National University of Bogotá, could be influenced by Simone de Beauvoir and one of the reference books of the world feminist movement, The Second Sex, and to establish what links could exist between the ideas expressed in this essay and the construction of feminism in Colombia. It is noteworthy that in the writings of the Colombian intellectuals, gradually, beyond its founding work, the personality and life of Simone de Beauvoir has imposed itself to the point of exercising a real fascination on the Latin American public. She has become a model of life and many feminists are recognizable in her trajectory. Finally, it is also an attempt to measure whether this influence on a group of intellectuals has spread to the whole of the Colombian society, marked by the patriarchal model, the Catholic religion and the armed conflict

Full textThis thesis aims to demonstrate the emergence of a fourth wave of feminism in France, beginning in the early 2010s. A wave is here defined as a cycle of feminist protest that can be attested by the convergence of three interdependent and empirically testable criteria. The first criterion requires a noticeable growth in media interest for the women’s cause over a given period. From a qualitative research point of view, this media interest should be met with an adoption of frames favorable to gender equality. The second criterion implies to observe a change in the ideas and / or practices of feminist movements. These changes are the sign of a sucessful adaptation of the movements to social and technical evolutions, proving that they have managed to create a discourse which is audible in a given environment – of what the existence of the first criterion attests. Finally, the third criterion is about generational renewal : its main interest is to historicize the analysis by confronting the emergence of a protest cycle to the evolution of the mobilizing discourse and of the conditions leading individuals to protest

Full textLe deuxième sexe and Mémoires d’une jeune fille rangée are two books written by a philosopher. The purpose of this work is to show the difference between the two writings. The difference is not so radical as one could think. A study of the handwritings of these books shows that their divergences arise from their origins. In this short study, we detailed most of the characteristics of each of these two works. The literary genres are different, one is an essay, and the other is an autobiography. A few critics think that these two genres are linked. They both have such literary characteristics that it can look like poetic features. At last, this study shows that, in spite of their differences, they have common traits, and complement one another

Full textComparing Germany to other western countries, many academics and activists claim that the feminist “gains” are not as important in Germany. This does not imply that the feminists are not active. This master thesis is about the most notorious German feminist: Alice Schwarzer. Through her life story, her feminist thought, her campaigns and claims, this master thesis aims to shed the light on the evolution of second wave feminism in Western Germany in the second part of the 20th century. This master thesis portrays feminists’ fights in their socio-political context. The study will be completed with the help of a case study in order to portray the history of German feminism and capture the nature of some feminists’ “gains” in 20th century Germany. This study also allows us to shed the light on the disparities between feminists such as Schwarzer and third wave feminists throughout recent debates in Germany. This master thesis is divided in two major parts. First, the social heritage of Schwarzer will be drawn. Second, the feminist thought of Schwarzer will be presented in two themes: the “socialization of sexuality” and the “public character of the private sphere”. To do so, this master thesis is based on Alice Schwarzer’s writings: Her first and most important book The Small Difference and its Big Consequences (1975), the magazine EMMA she founded in 1977.
