Abstract:

This mastership dissertation aims to analyse the material and symbolic contidions that lead organized groups of feminist women to institutionalisation in the scope of the State and/or governments in 1970´s and 1980´s Brazil. We adopted as basis the understanding of feminism as a praxis and a critical thinking - it is a political praxis and a thought with its ideas, theories and political positions - which criticizes the disposition the world is organized (ÁVILA, 2013). We maintain that the brazilian feminist movement not only proposed, created, idealized organisms, services and public equipament. It went slowly within the three levels of government, from the 1980´s on, becoming a main participant and executing, the movement itself, the public policies. Methodology - this is a study of qualitative basis, in which six semi-structured interviews have been carried through with feminist women: a) That have experienced the first moments of government institutionalisation; b) That took part in governments (or that deffended that feminists should take part on the governments); feminists that were against their participation but later took part in governments. The initial characterization of the problem is held on the conceptual mark of gender that dialogues with feminists theorists and that is organized in three axis, namely: 1) the concept of patriarchate; 2) the system sex-gender and, 3) the concept of State feminism. As methodology of analysis we were inspired by Laurence Bardin´s (2000) technique of analysis of the thematic-categorial content. Results - Conscisely, the analysis of the material indicates that the creation of the council for women´s rights has inaugurated the institutionalised relationship between the feminist movement and the State; that feminism is influencing transformations in the State institutions, although it is still the context of a patriarchal State.

Wille, Robin. "Die Soziologie Pierre Bourdieus : theoretische Evaluation affiner und kontroverser Beziehungen zur Forschung und Kritik des Feminismus." Master's thesis, Universität Potsdam, 2007. http://opus.kobv.de/ubp/volltexte/2007/1302/.

Full text
Abstract:
The Master’s thesis, written in sociology at the University of Potsdam, focuses on Beate Krais’ criticism of Women and Gender Studies which claims that because of the unreflected presence of Parson’s concept of social roles theoretical oppositions as there are the individual and society, nature and culture, body and mind, irrationalism and rationalism etc. are conceptionally reformulated. This legitimates not only stereotypes of gender roles within modern, differentiated societies but more fundamentally justifies the notion of a natural given difference between ‘two’ sexes. Hence Regine Gildemeister und Angelika Wetterer argue that feminist theory does not do justice to its demand which is to reveal the view of “biology as destiny” as an ideological notion. The consequence is that in a theoretical and methodical way, feminism exercises a problematic affirmation of the gender dualism. There are two types of theoretical developments trying to overcome these contradictions of feminism. On the one hand, following new modernistic or poststructural argumentations, the possibility of a critically orientated Approach to Social and Gender Study is called into question. On the other hand, one can observe the paradigmatic transition from Women and Gender Studies to Gender Relation Studies which not only rethink the connection of academic and critical ambitions but also articulate the demand of an integrative, gendersensitive Social Science instead of reserving an academic niche any longer. The theory of the sociologist Pierre Bourdieu adds to the discussion by pointing out the limits of postmodern and postfeministic theoretical approaches. Nevertheless, within the frame of a praxeological theory, particular affinities to the feminist discourse are apparent. Bourdieu’s theory of symbolic violence understands ‘gender’ as a relational term. However, by going far beyond given insights, Bourdieu reveals this notion to be a powerful social category within a dialectical framework of social and symbolic structures. Trying to oppose to the criticism that representatives of Women and Gender Studies have articulated towards Bourdieu’s work: “Die männliche Herrschaft” (1997), this Master’s thesis intends to counteract a superficial reading and sentencing of Bourdieu’s work by offering an evaluative and reflective consideration of his sociological concepts in terms of feminist demands and challenges.

Abstract:
The thesis is about the representation of the women in the politics, especially in The Czech Republic. The goal is to answer on the question, if this approach depends on the position of the political party on the ideological left-right spectrum. First the thesis is focused on the development of the women's position in the society since the 18th century and on the women's right struggle within feminism. The second part of thesis presents the methods, which support the women's political activity. The last capture analyzes the approach to the women in politics of seven political parties, which won the seat in the Chamber of Deputies in Parliament of The Czech Republic in the years 2006 and 2010. It compares their approach to policy of equal gender representation in the party's documents and in the reality. The result of the analysis is that the power of the party is more important than its position on left-right spectrum in the approach to women. The more powerful party is the less opportunities have the women in politics.

Full text
Abstract:
The subject matter of his analysis is the media debate on feminist de/constructivist theory and practice conducted in 2006-07, using the peg ‚gender mainstreaming‘ to hang itself on. The debate was dominated by a number of anti-feminist publications, which my analysis mainly focuses on. The core of the research consists of the analysis of the articles „‚Gender Mainstreaming‘ Politische Geschlechtsumwandlung“ (FAZ; Volker Zastrow) and „Der neue Mensch“ (Der Spiegel; René Pfister), which are being investigated by also looking at the context of the debate. The analysis aims at the central discursive strategies which are used to delegitimise feminist de/constructivist theory and practice as well as their protagonists and enquires about the implicit and explicit statements of the articles, the basic common knowledge, criterion and exclusions. I devise a theoretical and methodical perspective, which makes the debate analyzable in a double way: On the one hand the media debate can be seen as a ‚condensate‘ of common knowledge and as a mirror of social power structures and on the other hand it functions as a producer of knowledge and power itself. Consequently the research questions allude to the existing common and/or science-based knowledge as well as to the ‚new‘ knowledge which the media debate generates by (re-)combining, (re-)accentuating and (re-)contextualising knowledge. Which denotations/connotations are assigned to the term ‚gender‘? Which criterion is being mobilized to judge feminist politics? Which subjects (homosexuals, transgendered persons et al.) are degraded or excluded? Which scientific knowledge and which common knowledge form the basis of the (anti-feminist/ transphobic/ homophobic) statements being made? Is there any evidence that de/constructivist perceptions regarding gender found access to the public gender debate? And eventually: Which are the strategies being pursued by those articles that referred to feminist theory and practices affirmatively? Within the anti-feminist thread of the debate, ‚gender mainstreaming‘ served as a peg to hang an updated antifeminism on, that was directed against all feminist politics and theories associated with the term ‚gender‘. ‚Gender‘ itself was established as a stigmatized political term including a vague de/constructivist meaning. The discursive anti-feminist strategies affect the trueness of feminist thought, the aims and impacts of feminist politics and the question about the interests pursued by feminist politics. These strategies rest upon the specific interpretations of feminist politics and theories, upon the exclusion of existing power structures from the debate, upon underlying presumptions concerning gender and gender identity and upon the degradation and exclusion of persons due to their sex, their gender or their desire.

This work aims to think about the potentialities of transnational feminist political coalitions based on ethnographic experience that focused on Slutwalk of the city of Goiânia / GO ("Marcha das Vadias" - MdV / GO) in the years 2014, 2015 and 2016. For this, I interpret that this March would be a contemporary "young" feminist expression. The analysis proposes intersectionality, taking into account the different social markers of difference that have emerged in the field, such as gender, "race" / color, class, sexuality and age / "generation". Thus, three major axes of analysis are thought: 1) Transnational flows of feminisms; 2) Intersectionality and ethnic-racial issues; 3) Generational differences and different feminisms in play. As an analytical possibility, I propose the idea of intersectional feminist whiteness, thought from the racialization of white social experience on the March.

Abstract:

Master’s thesis analyses the attitude of young female artists, who mostly work with photographic medium, primarily presenting their art works by digital tools, via online platforms. The intention of thesis lies in examination of the group of young female artist, connected by The Ardorous collective, whose members are automatically perceived as feminists, who insist on equality for women in the art world. It also analyses working approach of collective’s founder Petra Collins, as well as some of its most noteworthy members, and contemplates on ideological means leading to their final works. Thesis also describes approach not only to the art practicing, but to the entire constructing of its own public image, by comparing The Ardorous with the british female collective of alike intentions, Bunny Collective. Hypothesis of designated artists are partly interpreted with fragments of text by french creative collective Tiqqun, named Preliminary Materials For a Theory of the Young-Girl [2007, Semiotext(e)].

The research has the character quantitative and qualitative, in that it analyzes and contextualizes the data from the perspective of feminist epistemology. As a research procedure, the SciELO database was used as data source, Microsoft Excel for the preparation and presentation of tables and graphs, the Thesaurus for Gender Studies and Women for the selection of the most frequent themes and the Ucinet software for the creation of the co-authoring network. It was observed that more than half of the authors (67.85%) published in individual authorship, being the lack of investment in the Human Sciences and Applied Social Sciences a cause that can be considered. The application of the citation analysis demonstrated that there is a great epistemological and sociological basis of the articles, besides a concern with public policies. In the analysis of the most frequent themes, there was a greater amount of publications related to theoretical issues and focused on emerging issues such as violence against women and also research aimed at improving public policies. The themes that have not been so accentuated present areas that can receive greater attention from the researchers of Gender Studies and Feminisms, being: "Education"; "Science and technology"; "Economy and Employment" and "Communication, Arts and Entertainment". The increase in the number of articles published on the topic in recent years demonstrates the increase and frequency of the counterpoint in the debate. In addition, the participation of foreign authors in the journal corroborates the worldwide importance given to the study of this subject, although the volume of work is still not enough to strengthen the discussion and make the theme of consistency greater. It is expected that this analysis will serve as an evaluation tool for the scientific community in question, besides stimulating other researches with different approaches involving the theme Gender Studies and Feminists, whereas these analyzes and themes involve both relations of power and the possible rupture of the tradition of the binary gender model in the spheres of science, politics, institutions and general society.

Abstract:
Postfeminism could be considered an ongoing development in the history of feminism. Alternatively, it can be seen as a form of antifeminism or faux feminism. The following thesis is a reaction against the postfeminist sentiment which argues that feminism is an ideology of the past, or in need of significant reconfiguration. Rather, I argue that feminism continues to be an exciting movement capable of bettering the lives of Australian women. Feminism is an emancipatory ideology which seeks to free women from patriarchy by employing strategies such as protest and consciousness raising. Feminist activism has brought many changes to women’s lives, including woman suffrage, workplace reform, and the institution of equal opportunity and anti-discrimination legislature. Such achievements show that feminism is worthwhile, despite the criticism of authors such as Naomi Wolf, Christina Hoff Sommers, and Camile Paglia who suggest that today’s feminism ought to move in a different direction from that of the Second Wave. However, women continue to experience injustices similar to those identified by feminists of the 70s, such as the existence of informal barriers which negatively impact women’s political participation, the lack of women in decision making positions in business, and the physical violence that women are subjected to. Modern day women ought to embrace feminism and seek to achieve the goals such as those laid out by Aune and Redfern in Reclaiming the F-Word: The New Feminist Movement – liberating women’s bodies; ending violence against women; transforming politics and work; and reclaiming feminism.
