This dissertation intends to investigate how the feminine representations are built up in the novels Dom Casmurro and The Turn of the Screw, whose starting points are the characters Capitu and the governess, respectively. The feminine ideals are masculine creations and so they deserve special attention. Both characters refer to a social construction that is related to the distinction between masculine/feminine, which includes the woman in an inferior position and projects a negative image of these women adulterous and insane. We are interested in these stereotypes of women that are built from established myths and are incorporated into gender showing a character of naturalness. Concerning the novels context, we believe that these representations are equivalent to an appropriation of the masculine view over the feminine body. Machado de Assis and Henry James grasp not only woman s soul, but they also transfer their creations to the word surface, with which the plots in first person are built. To conclude, with the support of the feminist literary criticism which deals with the issue of women as consumers of a literature produced by men, we intend to encourage a reflection about gender identity created and presented according to a masculine view.
The main aim of this work is to observe the female presence in Muriel Spark.s novels The Driver.s Seat and Symposium as a factor that can translate the reality of women who look for autonomy and that also offers, as a result, a relation between this attitude and the social reactions they cause. Based on studies that deal with identity matters (within gender studies, specifically, the feminist criticism) the recurring use of certain themes will be verified. Among them we can point out death, madness and an apparent control on the situation which in some way reveal problems, conflicts and afflictions of the observed characters. In the first chapter, the author is placed within the women.s movement as a way to have a better comprehension of her work by putting her in a specific context. Then, her work.s most evident characteristics are observed in relation to women.s practices as a whole. Among those questions that mark women.s writing studies, in the second chapter will be mentioned some critical trends interested in those writings and which differentiate them from men.s writing. The proposal of the criticism centered in the woman (gynocritics) deals with the difference emphasizing the women.s body, language, psyche and culture. Based on these critics it will be made a preliminary analysis of Spark.s novels. In the third chapter, gender matters begin to be discussed as an analytic factor which foresees internal differences in women.s group as well as similarities to men.s works. This gender aspect causes a reading no longer binary and based on hierarchies, but one that allows the differences to become a factor of freedom and autonomy. Finally, the author.s contribution to Literature and her relation to the women.s movement will be subject to brief comments.

Para essa investigação nos valemos das idéias apresentadas por Sandra M. Gilbert e Susan Gubar em The madwoman in the attic e nos três volumes de No man’s land, sendo o primeiro, The war of the words; o segundo, Sexchanges e o terceiro, Letters from the front. O trabalho ainda conta com os pressupostos teóricos de Elaine Showalter em A literature of their own: British women novelists from Brontë to Lessing e Toril Moi em Teoria literária feminista e de Mark Hussey em Virginia Woolf: A to Z entre outros
Virginia Woolf’s feminist ideas, which are explored in A room of one’s own and in Three Guineas, are also present in her novels. The corpus of the analysis comprises two of her most important novels - To the Lighthouse and Mrs. Dalloway. The intention is to demonstrate that there is a coherent body of thought in her work, which clearly indicates an aesthetic and political project that underpins her texts and defines her writing. The main theoretical texts that will be used are The Madwoman in the Attic, the three volums of No Man’s Land, the first The War of the Words, the second Sexchanges and the third Letters from the Front by Sandra M. Gilbert and Susan Gubar; A Literature of their Own: British Women Novelists from Brönte to Lessing by Elaine Showalter; Teoria Literária Feminista by Toril Moi and Mark Hussey’s Virginia Woolf: A to Z among others

Full textThe aim of this dissertation is to analyze the conditions and possibilities of Virginia Woolfs feminism in the light of the social, economical and cultural environment in which she lived and of which she became one of the icons. Because of her background and of the historical setting of her time, her positions take on an extremely ambiguous character. This study shows that the author bends from a whole generation icon to an outsider, from novelist to literary critic, from highbrow to common reader, from lady of letters to feminist, from woman of taste to proponent of a new literary aesthetics, from Victorian snob to modernist. Both her creative nature and the elements she suggests in her literary aesthetics result from her view of the world and from her ambiguous relationship with reality.

Full textIn ultimately aiming at liberation from social oppression, both Critical Theory and feminist epistemology provide theoretical insights into the social construction of knowledge, the intersubjective character of knowledge and the depth psychological dimension of the knower. It is maintained that a synthesis of these insights can provide the groundwork for a liberatory educational theory based on the interrelation between experience and knowledge. Also, in dialectical interaction, a liberatory educational theory provides a means for actualizing the liberatory aim of critical epistemology.
Altieri, Emanuelle Cristina de Oliveira. "Emancipação e silenciamento em Save Me the Waltz (1932), de Zelda Fitzgerald /." Assis, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/11449/192081.

Full textThis thesis provides a reading of the different forms of representation that can be attributed to the character Tashi, the protagonist of the novel Possessing the Secret of Joy (1992), written by the African American writer Alice Walker. Before this work Tashi had already appeared in two previous novels by Walker, first, in The Color Purple (1982) and then, as a mention, in The Temple of My Familiar (1989). With Tashi, the author introduces the issue of female circumcision, a ritual Tashi submits herself to at the beginning of her adult life. The focus of observation lies in the ways in which the author’s anger is transformed into a means of creative representation. Walker uses her novel Possessing the Secret of Joy openly as a political instrument so that the expression “female mutilation” (term used by the author) receives ample attention from the media and critics in general. The aim of this investigation is to evaluate to what extent Walker’s social engagement contributes to the development of her work and to what extent it undermines it. For the analysis of the different issues related to “female genital cutting”, the term I use in this thesis, the works of feminist critics and writers such as Ellen Gruenbaum, Lightfoot-Klein, Nancy Hartsock, Linda Nicholson, Efrat Tseëlon and the Egyptian writer and doctor Nawal El Saadawi will be consulted. I hope that this thesis can contribute as an observation about Alice Walker’s use of her social engagement in the creation of her fictional world.
The Temple of My Familiar (1989).
Burnett, Linda Avril. "The argument against tragedy in feminist dramatic re-vision of the plays of Euripides and Shakespeare /." Thesis, McGill University, 1998. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=35857.
Full textIn the first part, I maintain that feminist dramatic re-vision is one manifestation of an unrecognized tradition of women's writing in which criticism is expressed through fiction. I also argue that the project of feminist dramatic re-vision embodies a feminist "new poetics."
In the second part, I examine the aesthetics and politics of tragedy from a feminist perspective. Feminist arguments against tragedy are, in effect arguments against patriarchy. But it is the theorists and critics of tragedy---not the playwrights---who are unequivocally aligned with patriarchy. Playwrights like Euripides and Shakespeare can be seen to destabilize tragedy in their plays.
In the third part, I show how recent feminist playwrights (Jackie Crossland, Dario Fo and Franca Rame, Deborah Porter, Caryl Churchill and David Lan, Maureen Duffy, Alison Lyssa, The Women's Theatre Group and Elaine Feinstein, Joan Ure, Margaret Clarke, and Ann-Marie MacDonald) counter tragedy by extrapolating from the arguments presented by Euripides and Shakespeare in The Medea, The Bacchae, King Lear, Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet and Othello , and by allocating voice and agency to their female protagonists.

Full textThe following dissertation explores the work of french writer, Violette Leduc through Judith Butlers definition for both gender performativity and performance notions. The investigations core is the part such notions play in Leducs work, especially her autobiographical trilogy, which comprehends the novels La bâtarde, La folie en tête and La chasse à lamour. This research views Leducs work from the feminist criticism perspective, with special attention to queer studies (but without losing account of the critical thinking that preceded it). The result is an literary analysis that transforms into a discussion of various themes, such as power, genders, sexualities and the different potentials for literary language. Leducs autobiographical protagonist-narrators constantly address Leducs own literary work and claim their ownership over it: they rewrite Leducs fiction and also denounce their creative strategies as well as her impasses with literary writing. The result is a narrator that destabilizes Violette Leducs work, persistently transforming it. Beyond that, in the leducian literature there is a recurrent interrogation of social, political and cultural structures that regulate genders, desires and sexual practices. Lesbianhood, bissexuality, heterossexuality, feminility and masculinity as well as desire and its practical potentialities are themes explored throughout the entire autobiographical trilogy and also in the fictional work. Such inquiries result in transformations on the very literary writing, revealing a key aspect of Leducs literature: the symbiotic relationship established between creation (performance) and citation (performativity).

Abstract: The main aim of this work is to observe the female presence in Muriel Spark.s novels The Driver.s Seat and Symposium as a factor that can translate the reality of women who look for autonomy and that also offers, as a result, a relation between this attitude and the social reactions they cause.

This work aims to carry out linguistic and social reflections on ideological phenomena (THOMPSON, 1995) which involve the theme "feminism" in mass communication, especially in the print media, making a historical comparison on the approach of this subject. For this, the newspaper O Globo was selected as an object of analysis, since it is an important mean of mass communication (MCQUAIL, 2003) in the country. The texts chosen for analysis refer to time cuts made from 1925 to 2016. Thus, recognizing the importance of mass communication as the locus for the production and propagation of ideology (Thompson, 1998), through a qualitative perspective based In Critical Discourse Analysis (FAIRCLOUGH, 2001 [1989], 1992, 1995) and considering textual genres (MARCUSCHI, 2005), we seek to reflect on the ideological representations of feminism and struggles for women's rights in the newspaper. The term “feminism” had appeared in the newspapers since 1925, evidencing the concern of the print media to position themselves on the subject. As we have seen, in comparing the data historically, the approach taken by this media on the subject is sometimes positive, sometimes negative, according to the interests of this medium and through the time.

Full textThis thesis is situated in the research area of text and discourse in oral and written modalities of the postgraduate studies program in Portuguese Language of the PUC-SP. It is based on the Critical Discourse Analysis with socio-cognitive aspects and in the Textual- Discursive Linguistic. The thesis has as theme the different forms of representation of feminine in Marina Colasanti's chronicles having as a starting point the relationship between the categories: society, cognition and discourse. The general purpose of this thesis is to contribute to the linguistic-discourse studies of feminine gender in Brazil. It has specific objectives as: 1) to identify the social roles of feminine in Marina Colasanti's chronicles; 2) to verify the opinion of the chronicler regarding the values attributed to the female; according to the social cognition; 3) to situate the feminine gender representations in the argumentative structure of the opinion of the chronicler. 4) to identify in the narrative textual sequences the way the feminine is represented. The methodological procedure used is theoretical and analytical with qualitative analysis of documentary material. This is a multidisciplinary research ranked by the cognition sciences. For a good understanding of the process of this thesis, should be mentioned the fact that it is based on the theoretical foundations of Discursive-Textual Linguistics and Critical Discourse Analysis with socio-cognitive aspects. The analytical categories are: society, discourse and cognition. The corpus consisted of the Marina Colasanti s chronicles that were analyzed from the themes, and their semantic progression for the representation of feminine s social roles in Brazilian society. The results indicate that female representations in Marina Colasanti s chronicles are paradoxical because confront the social cognitions (macho ideology), with the view of the chronicler (feminist ideology). To sum up, these results indicate a change in Brazilian society, in the seventies and eighties, due to the emergence of the contraceptive pill and the professionalization of women in Brazil

This study aims to perform a reading of the short stories of Scottish author Muriel Spark, in which the importance of the narrative practices manifests itself as their most evident feature: the narrative structure and the building of significances may favor the expression of a mode of being in the world and, more regularly, they also represent the great challenge that reading can accommodate concerning the characters, especially the female ones. However, it is necessary to identify the references that constitute the fictional worlds, usually tied to reality and proposing new forms of intelligibility. In general, these forms are implicit in the text and it is a readers’ task to access them; for this to occur, we must recognize that narrative structure and characterization are intrinsically linked. Through the sparkian characters it is possible to get a broad overview of the work of the author and, at the same time, the practices and experiences of women historically situated. Thus, the thesis we defend is that the stories written by Muriel Spark, based on significant buildings in the text, enable a dialogue between text and reality from the perspective of female characters. With the appropriate references, the reading of those sparkian short stories can contribute to the understanding of the ways by which women interact within their own group and with the male group
