"Le « Corps asiatique » De Yang Seog-il, Fils du Japon post-colonial : questions sur la subjectivité et le parricide dans la littérature zainichi contemporaine et intertexte avec la littérature maghrébine d’expression française." Thesis, Lyon 3, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011LYO30096/document.
Full textIn the context of post-Colonial Japan this dissertation attaches itself to explore the concept of a contemporary writer, a so-Called Zainichi: Yang Seog-Il’s “Asiatic body”. Having defined the field of interpretations covered by this term, our central question will be: in Yang Seog-Il’s literature how is the “Asiatic body” engaged in a process of overcoming this colonial and post-Colonial era? While reading Yang’s works, we shall use as an intertext and a mirror, some literary cases of contemporary francophone North African descendant writers (especially Azouz Begag’s texts). The first part shall map the socio-Historical context of these two diasporic populations (the Decolonized Zainichi in Japan and the Descendant from North African immigrants in France), that appeared in the last century, and in the same time, the birth of their so-Called post-Colonial literature. In the second part, we intend to make an in-Depth interpretation of our corpus, in taking up the manifestation of subjectivity of the (ex) colonized as the “Asiatic body”, using the Mikhaïl Bakhtine’s epistemology. The third part at last is devoted to a new reading of the literary works we are interested in: by establishing a link between the parricide as a literary theme and the “Asiatic body”, the wish of the son of post-Colonial Japan, Yang Seog-Il, to eliminate the father appears to renegotiate symbolical aspects that must be analysed. Hence, the feminization of the “Asiatic body” undertaken by Yang has to be read under the light of a feminist post-Colonial criticism that might uncover new themes of domination

Full textThis research aims at providing a first and thorough description of Gianna Manzini’s work for the Italian Broadcasting (RAI), a collaboration which started in 1947 and ended in 1968. Her works for the radio are divided into fashion and literary criticism broadcasting (chapter 1) and original radio screenplays (chapter 2); her works for the television are divided into broadcasted and non broadcasted scripts (chapter 3). The texts of these programmes have been found in the following archives: Fondazione Arnoldo e Alberto Mondadori (Milan), Archivio del Novecento, Università La Sapienza (Rome) and Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale (Rome). The thesis both describes and analyzes original and unpublished works and screenplays, such as L’Almanacco dei sogni, Il paesaggio come fatto personale, Il grande indiscreto, Il nome di battesimo and Alfredino. In the end, the research showed evidence that Gianna Manzini was well aware that different media require different writing characteristics and was able to act accordingly. Nonetheless, her literary and broadcasting activity cannot be considered as two separate carriers, being actually strictly bound to each other.

Full textDrawing on Carol Clover’s theory of the male antagonist or "Bogeyman" and the female protagonist or "Final Girl" that define the American Slasher Horror sub-genre, I analyzed two original Slasher films, namely Halloween (Carpenter 1978) and A Nightmare on Elm Street (Craven 1984). I later outlined the evolution of these conventions within the Slasher sub-genre, using the remakes of both films respectively. I then endeavoured to explain the subversion of these conventions in France with the New French Extremity Movement, and analyse how these filmmakers successfully transposed a typical American subgenre to France. Finally, using New French Extremity, I attempted to subvert and transpose these conventions to South Africa by writing, producing and directing a short Slasher film titled The Teddy Bear Man.

Full textDavidson, Rachel Diana. "Subversive Voices in Contemporary Motherhood: The Rhetoric of Resistance in Independent Film Narratives." Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1805/2711.
Full textInterpretive textual analysis, informed by a feminist perspective, is applied to five independent films written and directed by female filmmakers in order to understand to what extent the rhetorical construction of motherhood as presented in the films deviates from or supports a patriarchal Western vision. This study provides a rich textual analysis of Amreeka (2009), Frozen River (2008), Waitress (2006), The Dead Girl (2006), and Lovely and Amazing (2001); five films that each considers the role of contemporary mothering as a central part of its plot. Each film has been distributed within ten years of the inception of this study, is considered an independent film, has received some degree of critical acclaim, and is written and directed by a female filmmaker. Using a feminist critical interpretive lens, this study investigates the public and private sphere identification of the mothers, the mother-child relationships, and the family systems that work to unveil a vision of motherhood in contemporary independent film and identify the extent to which this vision challenges or adheres to traditional representations. The readings of these films rely on theoretical insights of feminist film criticism and feminist theory. In addition, feminist rhetorical perspectives provide the framework to reveal the broader cultural implications of the representation of contemporary motherhood in public discourse. The analysis reveals a subversive reading of contemporary mothering characterized by the rejection of domesticity and other traditional mothering ideologies. Informed by resistance theory, the findings suggest the female filmmakers utilize the symbolic inversion tactic as a tool to resist their subordinate status. The subversive discourses give voice to female filmmakers attempting to negotiate power in a traditionally patriarchal forum by invoking a rhetoric of resistance. However, the rhetorical construction of the “indie” mother is characterized by maternal sacrifice and maternal autonomy which ultimately forces women to negotiate their mothering identity in relation to the hegemonic childrearing model of intensive mothering. The production of contradictory messages illustrates an attempt to adapt to existing conditions rather than transform the patriarchal system suggesting that independent film is a dynamic medium that both reflects hegemonic discourse while remaining open to ideological variance.
Davis, Stefanie Leigh. ""Seduced and Abandoned Over and Over and Over": A Feminist Semiotic Narrative Analysis of the Films of James Toback." Thesis, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/1805/18387.
Full textIn this thesis, feminist semiotic narrative methodology is applied to James Toback’s films Love & Money, Exposed, Tyson, and Seduced and Abandoned, in order to illuminate his construction of womanhood and women’s sexuality. In each film, Toback served as writer, director, and producer, giving him total creative and business control. Due to this lack of outside oversight, these four specific films are most likely to directly reflect Toback’s perspective as a filmmaker. This study employs narrative-based semiotic criticism, expanding the work of Walter Fisher and Teresa de Lauretis, to identify how Toback’s creation of world, gaze, object/subject, and desire, construct womanhood and women’s sexuality. Toback’s creation of illusory worlds emphasizes that while superficial beauty qualifies a woman as a sexual commodity for men, sex will ultimately be women’s downfall.

Full textThis study aims to apply the biopolitical theories of Giorgio Agamben on homo sacer to the stereotypical representation of the violent woman. Using feminist methodologies for dismantling and exposing social stereotypes, this research explores the relationship between femininity, violence and the representation of these. By focussing on the influence of traditional narratives as found in ancient mythology and fairy tales, the study investigates the contemporary portrayal of the stereotypical violent woman using acts of dismemberment and dispossession in the work of Quentin Tarantino and Nathalie Djurberg, which serve as examples of the controversial relationship between real and filmic violence.
