Abstract:

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to, by a discourse analysis of LVU court cases, display how conceptions of feminity, sexuality and antisocial behaviour related to gender is constructed and examine whether this construction is characterized by continuity or alteration. We have examined 20 LVU court cases by using a discourse analysis. The results were analysed by using gender theory. The results showed among others that the construction of feminity is created by the courts portrayal of the girls in the court cases and what is portrayed as normal or deviant related to the girls’ behaviour. Behaviours which are portrayed as deviant for girls are for example use/abuse of addictive substances, to put yourself in environments filled with risks, to have behaviours which are negatively extrovert and/or criminal, to have a destructive behaviour in succession to mental illness, not to be an “ideal” victim, to see elderly men and express your own sexuality. One of our foremost conclusions is that the court, by our interpretation, incitements that the girls should assume stereotypical gender roles which are, for instance, characterized by vulnerability, caring for others and the need to be controlled.

Abstract:

"Feminine/ Feminist Reflections on Fairy Tales." Master's thesis, Universidade de Aveiro, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10773/15244.

Full text
Abstract:
Mestrado em Estudos Ingleses
To analyse some fairy tales such as Beauty and the Beast and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs from the perspective of modern feminism is like revising the paradigms which form our romantic expectations and illustrate psychological ambiguities that frequently confuse contemporary women. Portraits of adolescents waiting and dreaming, patterns of enchantment, and the romanticism of marriage contribute to the power of fairy tales. However, such fantasies praise the heroines’ incapacity to act independently, the reliance on exterior rescue and the binding to the father or to a prince. Although many readers recognise obvious elements of fantasy, they sometimes still identify themselves with the heroes and especially with the heroines. Unconsciously, women can transfer from the fairy tales to the real world cultural norms, which exalt passivity, dependency and self-sacrifice as feminine virtues. Intrinsically, fairy tales perpetuate the male status quo, making female subordination seem a desirable fate from which it is impossible to escape. It is this feminine perspective and feminist criticism that I intend to expose in my thesis, touching on the importance that fairy tales still have today, in the 21st century, not only on child rearing but also on the adults’ behaviour. In this thesis, I briefly explain how fairy tales emerged several centuries ago and how they evolved until our time in several versions, with several perspectives. My purpose is to analyse how fairy tales, on the one hand can influence us positively, showing us what is good and what is evil, and on the other hand, can influence us negatively because they present us with the “socially” accepted behaviours expected from women. In fairy tales, women are almost always represented as stepmothers and bad witches or as sweet, passive princesses dependent on the male image (father or prince) in order to be happy. It is this representation of female image that I intend to explore and analyse, showing my point of view of how fairy tales continue to represent behavioural models considered adequate to the female sex and to mirror a female image which is still accepted and seen as the most adequate – the image of a submissive, passive woman waiting for her prince charming to save her and bring her the desired happiness.

Abstract:

High achieving girls at upper secondary school are given positions that give them a high feminized cultural capital, however, their high achievement does not translate into a position free from gender habitus. I followed thirteen girls at upper secondary school with language as major in their lifeworld in the classroom. I have also been listening to their own stories about their achievements. I have especially put notice into how the feminine capital is reproduced thru gender habitus, symbolic violence and the androcentric heteronomy. Furthermore, I have used the ethnographic method in order to study their everyday life in school and I present my data as a narrative story. My result shows that high achieving girls are highly competent and successful in the discourse of the school, however, the expectations of the school and the androcentric heteronomy offer them certain subject positions which make their high achievements a feminized capital.

Jones, Marie F. "Academic Libraries as Feminine and Feminist Models of Organization." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2008. https://dc.etsu.edu/etd/1920.

Full text
Abstract:
Because academic libraries are primarily staffed by women and are relatively autonomous entities in colleges and universities, they offer a unique model of workplace gendering and feminism. This qualitative, ethnographic study examined 3 small college libraries in 3 regions of the United States and explored issues of bureaucracy and gendering in these libraries. Feminist challenges to bureaucracy emerged in the areas of hierarchy, division of labor, competition and collaboration, decision-making, and communication. Feminine practice in the libraries reflected private sphere attitudes toward work (values of community, emotionality, and caring) and an affirmation of feminine roles in the workplace. The organizational cultures of these libraries affirmed flexible scheduling, emotions and friendship at work, and parenting talk and behaviors. The library workers also engaged in an ethic of care for library users and colleagues. Individuals in the organizations expressed motivations for work not based in monetary or status gain and endorsed women's power in leadership roles. The gendering of libraries also placed strong masculinity outside of the norm, creating expectations for men to engage in androgynous or feminine behavior. Overall, the study gives voice to feminine and feminist practice in the workplace.

Abstract:

Hamilton, Jayne. "Gender representation and textual strategies in the films of Pilar Miro." Thesis, University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/286.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to demonstrate the interrelatedness of the rebellious form and content of Pilar MirO's first six films - La petición (1976), El crimen de Cuenca (1979), Gary Cooper gue estás en los cielos (1980), Hablamos esta noche (1982), Werther (1986) and Beltenebros (1991). The Introduction provides a brief outline of the director's life and an insight into some of the core themes of her cinema, summaries of relevant theoretical arguments from psychoanalysis and gender theory in the context of sociology and film studies and an outline of the situation of men and women in Spain vis-à-vis the law, social prejudices, attitudes to sexuality and work. Part I (chapters 1-6) examines gender issues and character portrayal in each of the films in chronological order using these theories. Part II deals with the metafictional textual strategies of Miró's works. Chapter 7 outlines features of metafiction, such as stylistic intertextuality, literal intertextuality, mise-en-abime devices and other cinematic strategies which highlight the constructed nature of the films by laying bare the processes of fictional creation and disturb the viewer, making him or her an active reader, who cannot acquiesce in a passive spectatorial position. It also discusses the issue of authorship in film to posit that Miró abdicates from the position of onmiscient auteur through intertextuality and her use of assistant authors, another strategy of metafictional, postmodern art. Chapters 8 and 9 look at specific examples of intertextuality. The first section of chapter 8 examines the thematic and stylistic influence of the American artist, Edward Hopper, on the setting of Beltenebros and José Gutiérrez Solana's tremendista paintings as a visual reference for El crimen de Cuenca: the chapter also takes into account the joint stylistic influence of Carol Reed's The Third Man (1949) on Beltenebros. The second section of chapter 8 applies theories of historiographic metafiction and intrahistory to Miró's depiction of a miscarriage of justice in the Spanish legal system and the imprisonment of two innocent men in El crimen de Cuenca. Chapter 9 outlines a special instance of intertextuality in Miró's employment of stars. Using recent work in star studies, I consider the contributions and implications of her choice of two actresses - Ana Belén and Patsy Kensit - to La petición and Beltenebros. The conclusion suggests that, while Miró demonstrates an active interest in and sympathy for the victims of oppression, her use of intertextuality may be unconscious and that this thesis presents just one possible argument or interpretation. An interview with Miró in 1995 is included in an Appendix, as are relevant stills of Ana Belén.

Abstract:
The feminine character, shaped by nurturing experience, includes fundamental spiritual training. Feminist spiritual writers value nurturant other-oriented personality characteristics. Although not necessarily having fulfilled nurturing social roles, men may develop spiritually advanced characteristics by undergoing experiences Christ recommended. Examining four spiritual figures, this study sought to ascertain whether exposure to the experiences recommended by feminists and by Christ facilitates development of spiritually advanced characteristics. The findings did not demonstrate that exposure to the experiences recommended by feminists facilitated this development. Nor did exposure to the experiences recommended by Christ predict this development. Females did not develop spiritually advanced characteristics to a higher degree than males. Exposure to a combination of the experiences recommended by Christ and by feminists did correlate with development of spiritually advanced characteristics. Exposure to a modicum of the experiences recommended by feminists may be necessary. Recommendations for counselors are included.

Han, Catherine Paula. "Reimagining the Brontës : (post)feminist middlebrow adaptations and representations of feminine creative genius, 1996-2011." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2015. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/83347/.

Full text
Abstract:
Investigating conceptualisations of the feminine creative imagination, this thesis examines representations of the Brontës and adaptations of their novels released between 1996 and 2011. I focus on portrayals of Charlotte and Anne Brontë alongside reworkings of Jane Eyre (1847) and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (1848) in various media. Contributing to existing research on the cultural afterlives of the Brontës and their novels, I position the works discussed within contemporary middlebrow culture whilst considering the influence of feminism. The Introduction discusses the gendering of creative genius before identifying the tensions between critical, middlebrow and popular discourses’ conceptualisations of the Brontës’ imaginations. Thereafter, the first chapter proposes the contemporary usefulness and considers the gendering of the concept of the middlebrow. I demonstrate that middlebrow culture is fascinated by the Brontës’ lives, art and feminine creative imaginations. To further this argument, the second chapter analyses neo-Victorian novels’ engagement with Charlotte Brontë’s life, art and creativity. I illustrate that these works draw from second-wave feminist criticism on Jane Eyre and belong to a tradition of middlebrow feminine writing about the Brontës. The third chapter also examines representations of feminine creativity and discusses how screen adaptations portray the artistry of Jane Eyre’s heroine. Additionally, the legacies of second-wave feminism in a wider postfeminist cultural context are explored. In the fourth chapter, the thesis turns to analyse the cultural dissemination and reputations of Anne Brontë and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. I delineate how middlebrow culture has rediscovered the youngest Brontë, her novel and her feminism. Ultimately, this thesis suggests that the works examined indicate middlebrow culture’s efforts to engage with feminism through the feminine creative imagination. Yet these works expose a prevailing tension in feminism between the status of the individual and the collective.

Abstract:
Thesis (MA (English))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009.
In this dissertation the dominant metaphor for the fusion between the feminine and technology, the cyborg, will be examined through various texts to assess the value the cyborg has for feminism as a tool to exposes the constructedness of boundaries of identity and gender, thereby enabling a reconstruction of a new feminine identity in a subversive and transgressive space. The main themes which will be addressed are those that often feature in feminist science fiction: reproduction, sexuality, the construction of identity and gender through science, culture and ideology, and the power relations between men and women. Other related concepts which will be dealt with are language, self and Other, representation and perspective. Feminist science fiction and theory attempt to destabilise conventional boundaries concerned with gender and identity and the texts which this dissertation deals with are all, to varying degrees, concerned with this destabilisation, each offering a unique perspective on feminine identity and the attempted transformation of current gender categories which will be explored in detailed analysis.

Jöves, Helena, and Sjöquist Fiodora Lyche.

Full text
Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
In 1958, actress Donna Reed formed her own production company to create The Donna Reed Show, which ran successfully until 1966. One of only two female television producers working in Hollywood, Reed’s show foreshadowed much of the discontent illustrated in Betty Friedan’s The Feminine Mystique. The series explored Donna’s frustrations with housework, her interest in professional activities outside the home, and her determination to be an equal in her marriage. However, The Donna Reed Show also diverged from Friedan on key issues by elevating the housewife and establishing her moral authority, thus foreshadowing more conservative “maternal” feminism as identified by Christina Hoff Sommers. The Donna Reed Show has been falsely grouped with other family sit-coms as conformist and has been largely overlooked for its contributions to the feminist movement by scholars, when in fact Reed created the most complex mother character on television at the time.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Aim The aim of this study has been to examine the perception of assessment criteria in the grading of Physical education in relation to Swedish, Social studies and Mathematics among girls and boys in Nature and Society programme (NS) from a gender perspective. This has been examined through using the following questions: • How do high school students at the NS programme experience the assessment in Physical education in relation to other subjects in school? • Which specific terms do the students experience they have to achieve in the various grades in Physical education, Social studies, Mathematics and Swedish? • How do the students perceive that an equal assessment is made in the chosen subjects? From this, we will interpret how students challenge or reproduce the gender order in their discussion of assessment. Method This study has had an qualitative approach and four focus group interviews have been carriedout with second year students at the NS programme. We used a strategic selection for the selected target group. To understand and interpret students' reasoning in our results, we have used the gender theory of Yvonne Hirdman and Raewyn Connell. Results The main result obtained in our study indicates that the students value the relations betweenthe chosen subjects differentially. Physical education as the lowest in the hierarchy and Mathematics as the highest. In between are Social studies, and Swedish. With this setting it is also difficult for the students to define what they should learn in Physical education. This is not seen as a problem in Mathematics. Part of the assessment, according to students, is based on their level of interest and behavior. Behaviors, characteristics and interests of the students are gendered which also becomes a part of the assessment. Interest in Physical education is attributed to the boys, which leads to both sexes allowing them to dominate Physical education. Conclusion The students in this study rarely negotiate their gender identities, especially in areas of interest. This, according to us, limits both girls and boys. All actors at the school in this study helps to create and maintain the gender system. Discussing the grading and assessment are ways of concretizing it. According to the students is there a lack of aim in Physical educationin contrast to Social studies, Mathematics and Swedish. The consequence of these arguments is according to us that the legitimacy of Physical education is minor then the other subjects in our study. However due to our result and previous science do high grades in Physical education bring higher status above all to the boys. Abstract:

Abstract:
The polemical debate, within feminist theory in North America, in the 1980s, around essentialism is the central focus of this thesis.
In particular, this work attempts to critically examine the notion of essentialism, the resistance to accepting a feminine "essence," and the loosely defined and employed terminology surrounding this field of inquiry. In accomplishing these objectives I draw upon, and critique, the more recent work elaborated around theorizing with/through the "body."
Aspects of feminist theory which are examined as contributive towards the above aim are an analysis of the explicit, and implicit, dangers of accepting or discarding essentialism, and an analysis of the inherent ontological and philosophical tenets that function within this present discourse.
It is maintained that by addressing the issue of essentialism, the relationship between subjectivity, identity, and gender, within feminist theory, will be liberated from further constraining propositions.

Abstract:
This thesis consists of a critical study, ‘“A Noisy Situation”: The Feminine and Feminist New Absurd in Twenty-first Century British and American Poetry’, followed by a poetry collection, 'Send Shells'. The critical study is a guidebook to the New Absurd, and thereby informs the reading of 'Send Shells'. Chapter One introduces the New Absurd as a descendant of male-dominated Absurdism; feminine and feminist humour is explored through Sam Riviere, Heather Phillipson, Selima Hill and Luke Kennard. Chapters Two, Three and Four focus on individual poets: Jennifer L. Knox’s 'A Gingo Like Me', Emily Berry’s 'Dear Boy' and Caroline Bird’s 'The Hat-Stand' 'Union' and 'In These Days of Prohibition'. The following themes are investigated: culture, class, and elitism; reality and imagination; feminine humour and sadness. Chapter Five explores apocalypse and technology through Maxine Chernoff, Jane Yeh, and Anne Carson. Chapter Six analyses failures to communicate through Rebecca Perry, Crispin Best, Rachael Allen, and Sara Woods. In conclusion Kayo Chingonyi, Rishi Dastidar, Mona Arshi and Anne Boyer are read to explore poets utilising the New Absurd, a prominent and influential movement in modern poetry, which does not have a specific membership, and might be seen as an aesthetic rather than a school.

The objective of the present work is to reflect about the phenomenon of the female press from a comparative perspective of two women's magazines of different historical periods. Based on the analysis of the advertisements of cosmetic products present in copies of the 1920s of the magazine A Cigarra and copies of the year 2016 of Marie Claire, I will try to demonstrate the continuities and discontinuities in the regulatory discourses regarding feminities linked to these publications. Thus demonstrating that in spite of the innumerable female achievements in the almost 100 years that separate these publications, much of the advertising discourse of the 1920s is presented in the current publication, sometimes reinventing itself in relation to form, but remaining true to the implicit content in relation to women.

Abstract:
In france, from 1899, the feminist movement, almost non existent, becomes organized and active. It is encouraged by the evolution of the feminine condition abroad. In the scandinavian countries, in greatbritain, in the u. S. A. , the situation of the woman is progressive. Feminine associations, congresses, press campaigns awake the attention of the public and of the legislative bodies. Little by little from 1892 until 1914, laws and institutions are being set in place to improve the situation of woman in the field of education in the professions and in family life. The 1914-1918 war confirms the ability of women in every field of responsability and action. In 1920 the demands of women are not yet satisfied, but the legal situation of women approximates that of men, and this progress becomes irreversible. At the same time as these demands are voiced a significant movement of literary creativity occurs among french women. In this general field and especially in poetry, women occupy a very important place. But what poets women express in their poetry is not the exigency of a better status in society, but the expectation of an answer to their emotional moral, metaphysical and religious aspirations. Every poetess of that time wants to reveal her personality. As these aspirations too often stay unsatisfied, their poetry, initially optimistic, becomes more and more pessimistic. The feminine poetry of that time expresses a great aspiration for a full life; yet this aspiration is ultimately unfulfilled. The feminist movement accomplishes incomplete but genuine improvements, the feminine anxiety communicated through the poetry remains unrelieved

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a postcolonial feminist discourse analysis of Sweden’s Feminist Foreign Policy. Sweden’s Feminist Foreign Policy is unique to the world, but it is not the only case of incorporating a gender perspective as a central part of national or international politics. Feminism and gender perspectives are increasingly receiving attention and space in global politics. The Swedish case could therefore inform us about where politics are heading. Previous research on the Feminist Foreign Policy has aimed mainly at examining what it means and what challenges it likely will face. The aim of the analysis is to examine whether and to what extent the discourse of the Feminist Foreign Policy interrelates with gendered postcolonial narratives. Feminist scholars have for decades argued for the need to recognize the ways in which gendered and postcolonial structures are interrelated. Excluding either a gender or postcolonial analysis will convey only part of the problem. The method used is discourse analysis, or more specifically, critical discourse analysis. Discourse is an essential part of our social world. It is both constituted by and constitutive of how we understand our surroundings. Critical discourse analysis in particular is a useful method to illuminate power relations in society and how they are reproduced or countered through discourse. Two opposing ideal types are developed based on ideas from postcolonial theory and postcolonial feminist theory: gendered postcolonial discourse and fully feminist discourse. The ideal types are used in order to measure whether, how and to what extent the Feminist Foreign Policy interacts with gendered postcolonial discourse. The analysis looks at official documents, statements and speeches of different forms issued or produced by the foreign office. Using several texts, with varied aims and settings, the material will arguably be representative of the Feminist Foreign Policy. The results show that the Feminist Foreign Policy cannot be placed exclusively in either ideal type. The texts interrelate with gendered postcolonial discourse, reproducing unequal relations of power. Conversely, other parts of the texts are fully feminist, both transforming discourse and contributing to knowledge about what it can look like when discourse manages to avoid gendered postcolonial narratives.

Abstract:
'Feminine Rhyme' is a sequence of objects and paintings that resonate with women's experience in contemporary culture. The components I have used are: the structure of the grid, aggressive surface handling, and language derived from text. I have reconfigured these elements to direct the viewer in exploring layers of information that can be viewed in fragments as well as understood within the containment of a sound whole. I have explored the relationship of gender identity in our culture, and the role women play in association to masculine power. Through repetitive use of the grid, combined with isolated words and images, I have created paintings that can be read either in a formal manner through the use of structure and materials that are visually pleasing, or in context to a visual dialogue of contemporary gender myths. By fragmenting text in the form of torn book pages, I have altered and personalized the order, lending weight to chaos. Words become a form of mark making, a lyrical device to be read at random. I have obscured the imagery by hiding the text, leaving only scattered bits of information. These bits are derived from a 'therapeutic model' found in self help books, diet books and romance novels which exploit "feminism" as a commodity, serve as cultural documents, and influence women as to how they should perceive their bodies, their minds, their freedom. The end result is a visual interplay of form and color within the context of personal testimony and societal conditioning of the female experience in contemporary culture.

Abstract:
Establishing a sense of identity is a central task in human development. This research pursued questions about how adult, self-identified feminist women conceptualize their identity, the role of feminism in that conceptualization, and the interaction of feminism with race and sexual orientation.

Forty women in five geographic regions across the United States were interviewed. The participants were faculty, administrators, classified staff, and graduate students affiliated with a university in the region. The interviews were completed during a week-long visit to each location; each interview lasted from 45 to 75 minutes. Interviews followed a semi-structured format, using a standard protocol. Questions in the interviews asked about the importance of feminism, occupation, relationships, religion, politics, race/ethnicity, and sexual orientation in the women's identities. The connection of feminism to each of the other identity areas was also asked of the participants.

The women in this study conceptualized identity as consisting of multiple elements, organized in one of two ways: (a) a whole with multiple parts and (b) a collection of multiple parts. The first is an integrated identity, where all elements are connected to each of the other elements, and the second is a contextual identity, where the connection of elements can depend on situational variables. The multiple identities include traditional categories of occupation, relationships, religion, politics, race, and sexual orientation, but also add other areas such as age, socioeconomic class, avocational interests, and feminism.

Women identify themselves as having multiple identities. The way participants in this study view feminism as an identity is organized in four categories: a set of values, a process to make meaning, a contextual identity, and an underlying construct. The categories of feminism vary in the degree to which feminism is connected with other identity elements. Women who view feminism as a set of values speak of it as a set of beliefs or an ideology that may or may not influence other identity areas. The participants who view feminism as a process to make meaning have either an interconnected or contextual view of feminism, with the added element of seeing feminism as a way to understand, interpret, and make decisions about experiences. Feminism as a contextual identity is connected with some parts of identity but not with all elements. For those whose view of feminism is as an underlying construct, feminism is interconnected and interactive with all of the other identity elements.

This study adds to the literature about feminism and feminist identity in three ways. First, it suggests that for women who identify themselves as feminists, feminism is not only an ideology but also an important element of their identity. Second, it asserts that a shared definition of feminism is not critical to determining its role in identity. Third, this study's findings challenge the Downing and Roush (1985) model of feminist identity as the principal model. The Downing and Roush model focuses on feminist consciousness rather than identity; it employs a singular, liberal definition of feminism; it ignores multiple identities and their interactions; and it hinges its highest achievement on activist participation. Each of these assumptions of the Downing and Roush model are contradicted by the findings of this research.

This study adds to the previous literature about identity in two ways. First, it expands the knowledge about adult women's identity by proposing a definition that takes into account the multiple identities that women have. Second, the findings challenge the limited areas by which identity has been traditionally defined. This study challenges the notion that identity is a singular, core construct based on traditional elements. Individuals must be allowed to identify the elements that make up their own identities. The results of this study also suggest that multiple identities, including race/ethnicity and sexual orientation, are mutually influencing and interconnected rather than independent or singular. Identity is constructed of multiple elements that must be examined together to understand the individual's own definition of self.

Discourses of division have seeped into the way the feminist movement thinks about feminist activism. Broadly, the initial research problem was to find out what the discord in feminist theory meant for feminist action. Because sexual violence is one of the key issues South African feminists seek to address, Rape Crisis Cape Town Trust was used as a case study. Formed in 1976, it provides support for rape survivors and runs public education programmes on issues around gender-based violence. Using Helene Joffe's model of cross-cultural analysis, the responses revealed that Rape Crisis' identity functions by "othering" and projecting perceived risk onto "other" groups: the criminal justice system, men, and feminism itself.

Old age is a very recente category, in spite of many people having studied already this sector of the population. Nevertheless, the image of na elder in Brazil is still the object of prejudice as a consequence of lack of information and communication. In the population of old persons, the contingent of women is more willing to express itself and struggle for a better quality of life. Women have suffered throughout history because their value as individuals was not appreciated by society, since they were considered inferior to men and therefore, dependent on them. S. Freud has shown that this historical and cultural prejudice has had great influence on the psychology of women. It is obvious in the education of the female population tha presents itself at the clinic where this study has been conducted. Using psychoanalyses as a theoretical reference , this paper has as an object the research of feminine image in old age. The population used in this study is that of the women treated at the psychology clinic in an ambulatory for the elder of the UFRJ-Instituto de Psiquiatria- CDA. The quality of life of this population, which has been growing, has been the main objective of the psychology clinic. The clinic has gained in importance as an agent that is helping the acquisition of mental health and equilibrium by the women who look for help because thy feel sad, anxious and afraid. Listening to their suffering, we were able to draw an image of women facing old age and consider some of the possible causes of their unhappiness. In association with psychoanalyses, and based on theories that emphasize the importance of the body and of non-verbal signs of affection in the psychic development of individual, we have concluded that the feminine image, which is sustained in the period of life that corresponds to the decadence of the young body, symbol of the feminine in our culture, is the result of a satisfactory process of identity acquisition in early life or of an adequate process of analysis in later life, when the previous identity acquisition was not satisfactory.

Abstract:
This study explores how futures studies could engage with critical feminist perspectives in an intrinsic manner and what feminist futures might mean. The study brings attention to the less discussed subject of epistemological basis in futures studies. Literature study and semi-structured interviews with practitioners and researchers working with feminist approaches in the fields related to futures development was deployed. I’ve analyzed Wendell Bell’s discussion on epistemological foundation of futures studies from feminist epistemological perspective, and have suggested the potential of feminist epistemology of situated knowledges and partial objectivity for futures studies. Based on the findings from the semi-structured interviews, an alternative feminist scenario set in Swedish society in the year of 2050 in the format of a fiction is presented with the aim to provide a detailed and situated narrative of political and daily lives in feminist futures. The feminist futures scenario should not be understood as the singular feminist future suggested for implementation. The intention is to demonstrate how the visionary dimensions of feminist studies could be articulated in various forms of futures studies, and to open up space for rich debates on envisioning feminist futures.

Abstract:
The thesis explores the poetry (and some prose) of Plath, Sexton, Atwood and Rich in terms of the changing constructions of self-image predicated upon the female role between approx. 1950-1980.1 am particularly concerned with the question of how the discourses of femininity and feminism contribute to the scope of the images of the self which are presented. The period was chosen because it involved significant upheaval and change in terms of women's role and gender identity. The four poets' work spans this period of change and appears to some extent generally characteristic of its social, political and cultural contexts in America, Britain and Canada. (Other poets' work, for example Rukeyser, Lorde, Levertov, is included too. ) The poets were not chosen to illustrate a pre-feminist vs. feminist opposition since a major concern is to explore what I see to be the symbiotic relation between femininity and feminism (as also between orthodoxy and heresy). However the thesis is organised chronologically because periodisation is important for a consideration of the poetry's social setting. In wanting to connect the poetry with cultural and political circumstances as much as possible I have taken Edward Said's assertion of a text's position of 'being in the world', its potential as a cultural product to help reshape reality, and its value as a 'powerful weapon of both materialism and consciousness'. This is the starting point for the study which is circular and cumulative in shape, fundamentally thematic, though each chapter is a chronological exploration of the work of one specific poet, beginning with Plath and completing with Rich. A conclusion attempts to pull the strands of each together and consider the implications raised. The thesis has four general concerns which run through its particular focus on each poet. The first involves the relations between cultural practice and ideology; the second involves the ideology of gender (through exploration of femininity and feminism); the third involves authorial ideology (through the construction of self-image in relation to femininity and feminism) while the fourth involves these concerns in terms of the overall arena of women's struggle for meaning and selfdetermination in cultural practice. More specific elements of the study include collating and comparing self-images and attempting to make connections or chart changes where images such as witch, queen, handmaid, shamaness, goddess, earth mother, whore, madwoman, etc., re-occur. Usage of myth (particularly Persephone). the Gothic, 'and articulation of lesbian desire are also explored. The emergence of a female 'hero' self-image, in opposition to 'victim', seems to be a corollary of the impact , of feminism in Rich's poetry particularly, but this tendency can be traced back through Plath. I explore the celebration of nature and the power of essentialism in the construction of heroic female images, particularly in the figure of the mother flowing with milk at the centre of 'ecriture feminine'. The concluding chapter suggests that femininity did not constitute such a repressive constraint on self-image and writing practice for women as perhaps might be supposed; and that feminism, while opening up many empowering changes for women, has raised further disturbing and unresolved questions about identity, and even helped, in some of its aspects, to create a new 'orthodoxy' in which various aspects of experience cannot easily be articulated. My example is Rich's later work where it seems to admit itself limited by its own initially liberating strategies and looks further on towards new 'heresies.'

Abstract:
While footwear was originally meant to protect the feet and enable the wearer to span larger distances and rough materials, today shoes are often seen as a fashion statement and a sex symbol for women. In his book, Of Cigarettes, High Heels, and Other Interesting Things, Marcel Danesi examines how high heels have moved away from the original purpose of shoes and now “seem to contravene this function. They are uncomfortable and yet millions of women wear them." They have moved from practicality to a sign of femininity, sexuality, and power.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The topic of my research is the lived experiences of eight psychotherapists and counsellors who consciously work with unusual phenomena as it arises in the therapeutic encounter. Unusual phenomena in this thesis refers to felt experiences which are considered to be beyond the everyday in the Cartesian paradigm and are often referred to as spiritual and/or mystical phenomena. Exploring these phenomena brings to light the potentialities in the vastness of consciousness which is considered to be an integral aspect of human existence in the thesis. I chose Heidegger’s hermeneutic phenomenological methodology for the research because it gives credence to the many and varied possibilities and potentialities both in particular lived experiences and in human existence as a whole. Van Manen’s lived existential provides the framework in which the participants’ experiences are explored. What emerged from the research is that unusual phenomena are not unusual for the participants. Although such phenomena are less visible and therefore less familiar in the everyday world, they are recognizable through their consistent presentation. This includes the participants having a powerful sense of ‘knowing’ which is all-encompassing and is beyond familiar landmarks such as the linear models of time and space. The participants bring their ‘knowing’ into the everyday world through embodiment and through their acknowledgment of the interconnectedness of existence. The expression of interconnectedness is experienced by the participants as lovingness, from which the ability for immediate healing in their therapeutic work becomes apparent. The participants’ accounts show a capacity for accessing the subtleties of human existence which emerge in the phenomenological process as the forgotten feminine of consciousness. The feminine of consciousness is a term used to describe a fundamental state of ‘being’ in contrast to the everyday masculine principle of ‘doing’. The research has implications for psychotherapy and counselling as it illuminates the need for a holistic approach which acknowledges the multidimensionality of human existence.

Golo, Erica Maria 1951. "Exploring feminist pedagogies." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/291480.

Full text
Abstract:
Feminist pedagogical aims and strategies have been discussed in a variety of articles and essays and in a few recent books. This thesis explores feminist discourse on pedagogies and attempts to reconstruct the development of these discourses historically. Early writings on feminist pedagogies were the product of the action-oriented feminism of the 1970s and focused on classroom practices, while recent works, rooted in the larger framework of poststructuralist feminism, engage in a complex theoretical dialogue with the philosophical narratives and counternarratives that oriented emancipatory pedagogies and problematized the boundaries between feminist and other emancipatory pedagogies. The thesis comprises an analysis of the historical and theoretical implications of the literature on feminist pedagogies, and an ethnographic part based on six interviews with Professors of Women's Studies at the University of Arizona, who were asked to discuss the meanings, possibilities and predicaments of feminist teaching in a large research University.

Abstract:
In the current European context of systemic crisis, the lack of links between autochthonous and migrant women, at a time when racism and xenophobia are growing day by day becomes imminent the need to study the possibilities and limits of a feminist political action where the juxtaposition of the different interests of women is the starting point in order to configure articulations. Based on the theory of intersectionality and feminist postcolonial perspectives, this thesis studies from a feminist and activist methodology, possibilities, difficulties and limits for the articulation of common political practices between organizations of migrants women and autochthonous feminists in Euskal Herria. To this end, through Narratives Productions technique, current and potential points of articulation and tension between their practices and political action projects are identified. Product of sharing narratives between groups and organize a physical encounter, a process of articulation between groups within the context of the Platform for the World March of Women in the Basque Country, where the research begins to take part as an activist, started. In this context, through the Observation-Participant technique and subsequent dialogue and discussion with the participants, this thesis analyzes the reproducing and breaking practices of colonial and patriarchal logic between participants. On the one hand, racist attitudes, condescension, monogamous and white thinking, and (self)underestimation of non-hegemonic knowledge appear as practices that reproduce colonialism among women. On the other hand, breaking practices are identified during the process: care pacts for criticism and politics of intimacy where affections, awareness of the semiotic-material inequalities between participants and mutual recognition become relevant policy tools in order articulate the differences.
