Full textSexual education (SE) research conducted at the turn of the 21st century in Quebec and elsewhere in the West, shows that a particular attention has been devoted to the prevention of sexually-related social problems of “at risk” populations. Women and girls are at the heart of the concerns. On the one hand, SE interventions tend to give greater responsibility to girls in the “management” of their sexuality, and on the other, the central role played by women (mothers, practitioners) in SE is largely demonstrated. What do women think of SE and what are their experiences of transmission and appropriation of sexual knowledge? This interdisciplinary thesis, essentially qualitative and grounded on a constructivist and feminist (standpoint theory) epistemology, is about the social representations (SR) of teenage SE in Quebec at the turn of the 21st century, in the context of the school reform which led to the withdrawal of the official SE school program. Thirty women members of six interest groups concerned by issues related to sexuality (M = 39.9 y.o.), as well as 10 mothers (M = 49.2 y.o.) and 10 daughters (M = 19.4 y.o.), for a total sample of 50 participants, respectively participated in focus groups and individual semi-directed interviews. All the participants also responded to a word association task. A qualitative and quantitative analysis of content showed that the RS of SE organized themselves around eight agents (school, family, other practitioners, youth, peers, media, Church, State), and six dimensions (didactical, reproductive/sociosanitary, sexual, affective/relational, axiological/ethical, social/psychosociological). Some convergences and divergences between the interest groups and the mothers and the daughters were observed. Results from the qualitative analysis, supported by a factorial correspondence analysis, highlighted two principles which organized the participants’ positions towards the content of the SR: one axis of sexual freedom versus of sexual control, and one axis which implied a social/political vision of sexuality versus an individual/private vision of sexuality. Twelve anchoring variables of the participants’ positions were found; six of sociological type, six of psychological/psychosociological type. Recommendations for research and intervention are presented.

Full textThe province of Quebec receives the second largest number of immigrants each year within Canada. It seems that emigrating from an under developed country to a developed country increases women's feelings of self-sufficiency and will lead to a positive attitude toward gender equality. The main focus of this study was to evaluate if immigrating to Quebec has had an influence on women’s perceptions of gender equality. In order to achieve this goal, semi-structured interviews have been conducted with eleven immigrant women from eight different countries, now living in Quebec. Questions on their perceptions toward gender, self-sufficiency and gender equality were asked. Constructivist paradigm has oriented the methodology and the data analysis was based on postmodernism feminist theory. Results suggest that gender equality is influenced by the immigration to Quebec and some of the factors of influence were pointed out by the participants. Orientations for further research are shown in the conclusion.

Full textImmigration and cultural diversity are, more than ever, a central issue in current sociopolitical debates in Quebec, with identity and integration being the two major emergent themes. While immigrants want to maintain their cultural heritage, Quebecois fear losing theirs in the increasing diversity. This qualitative study centers on an especially discriminated and targeted group: Muslim women. In it, we explore how these women define their identity and how they feel about their integration in society. Using symbolic interactionism and life course perspectives, we seek to understand how these two processes, identity and integration, interact. The data collected during thirteen semi-directed interviews with Muslim-identified women explore the cultural, religious, professional, familial and feminine dimension of their identity. These were then put in relation to the facilitators and the obstacles of the feelingexperience of integration. Whereas the social-political context tends to confine Muslim people’s identity solely to its religious dimension, this study wants to show that immigration is so much more diverse, complex and dynamic than we usually assume. Keywords: qualitative study, integration, immigration, Muslim women, life course perspective, symbolic interactionism

Full textThe founding principles on which western education systems hinge have been the subject of much debate for decades. Studies have shown important shortcomings in the system that remain to bead dressed (Giroux, 1988; Koehler et Kim, 2012; Shields, 2003). It is therefore essential to consider structuring avenues that could alleviate them. In order to contribute to this reflection, this thesis, set within the field of educational administration, ponders innovative educational practices in order to better understand what prevents or supports pedagogical innovation in schools. To that end, the methodology is based in a participant observation of a case study with an ethnographic approach as part of the international project Intercultural Education for Environment and SustainableDevelopment (IEESD): Young people’s rapport to scientific knowledge, territories and their ecocitizen commitment at the end of secondary school in France and Quebec led by Barbara Baderand Jean-Marc Lange (2017-2020, FRQSC-ANR). Data are collected via audio-recordings, a journal with field notes and different documents relating to students’ reflections. This research particularly focuses on the implementation process in Quebec City, with 19 high school students in Grade 11 and in collaboration with two female teachers. The main contribution of this research is to describe the emerging elements that support and hinder educational innovation as well as the reflections that accompany its implementation, with an emphasis on the school administration leadership and its transformative role. Through its observations of educational activities, and descriptions of the contrast between the student and teacher interview content, this research contributes to the reflection on innovative and emancipatory educational practices, as well as to the development of avenues that seem most promising to support the implementation of this type of educational innovation.

In recent years, Québec City has welcomed an increasing number of immigrants as well as a significant number of non-permanent residents, including more and more international students. This has given way to an even more diverse urban fabric. Half of the newcomers are women who, while experiencing most of the challenges shared by all immigrants, often face greater barriers due to a dual woman/immigrant status. On the other hand, immigrant women also have a capacity to act upon their lives and implement strategies to cope with their difficulties, including getting socially involved in the host society. This exploratory research focuses on one of these strategies – volunteering – through interviews with immigrant women who have volunteered in the early years of their lives in Quebec. The main objective of the research is to understand the role of volunteering with regard to the integration process. Some observations came out of our results. For the majority of participants, volunteering came in line with previous commitments while circumstances specific to post-migration could lead to changes in the types of volunteering they chose, the way they committed themselves and the motivations behind their choices. Interviewees have got involved according to their principles and values as well as their personal interests, but their immigrant status also carried additional motivations including the wish to create social

Full textThis PhD project aims to reflect and analyse how three generations of women refugees are exposed, identify themselves, takes ownership of the media discourse and then discuss them. In other words, it was discussed how identify through intergenerational networks, women transmit, create, and update the knowledge learned from the media, a memory and insertion practices and adaptation to a new environment life. Indeed, immigration favors increasingly hatch. “The diversity of cultures” that are an unavoidable issue in integration (Racine, Marengo, 2000). The media, in turn, are an indispensable source of access to information and culture. The development of transmission technologies such cable networks. Direct broadcast satellite, Internet and digital media allow the consumer, regardless of its origin, to appropriate personally cultural products which in turn determine the participation in working life in the host society. This new cultural integration is it spread easily among immigrant generations? The methodology is based on semi-structured interviews, commentary and reflexive content analysis. The interviews with refugee families stetted in several regions of Quebec (Sherbrooke, Joliette, Quebec City and Montreal) were carried out by a multidisciplinary team, multicultural and female. The originality of this research lies among others in the collection of information that is made from generational trios (grandmother, mother and daughter)” Each member of the trio was met individually and thereafter, the trio formed for a final group interview. Thus a thematic analysis of the speech of respondents was conducted. This analysis allowed to put into perspective various prominent elements relating to the relationship between the media and each member of generational trio. It was found that the media are understood differently by each member of the trip, the media such as television and the Internet are the most popular with young people and are used to window on both the host country of openness to the world and expressing oneself face the frustrations experience in Quebec. Finally, an analysis of the issue of intergenerational transmission of the prism of the media between the three-generation of refugee woman was made because this research is part of a larger project of intergenerational transmission of knowledge, practice and mutual aid between three generations of women refugees in Quebec (Vatz Laroussi, Guilbert & al. CRSH, 2009-2012). It is observed that the trios, the transmission is not unidirectional. It goes in all directions. Outside the box become a creative space.

Full textIn this master thesis, we are interested in the relationship between domestic material culture and the conception of the identity amongst Aboriginal women recently immigrated to Quebec City, an area of study that is attracting growing interest in a large number of disciplines. So far only a few studies have addressed these issues via observations on women in urban areas. We explore thus the universe of everyday objects of Aboriginal women in this place of solace, meditation and encounter with oneself which is the new city home. For these Aboriginal women in migration from rural to urban settings, domestic objects are important vectors of personal and collective identity. Through interviews, we try to understand the identity status of these objects, their arrangement in space, and the power and scope of their uses by Aboriginal women residing in Quebec City. The indigenous women we interviewed still keep most of their inherited traditional objects that carry with them the traditional Aboriginal values, such as sharing and non-competitiveness. These values are often in conflict with those of the dominant society, such as consumerism and individualism, which can gradually slowdown and disregard the recognition of Aboriginal heritage and self-identification process of these women. However, some women continue to use their traditional objects and to participate in traditional activities that represent a link with their aboriginal communities and values.

Full textIn research and government institutions, socio-professional integration is well known as one of the main integration catalysts for immigrants. Likewise, Quebec government chooses most of its immigrants depending on their socio-professional integration potential on Quebec’s job market. This potential is measured, among others, according to the level of education. Yet, numerous immigrants enter Quebec with very few years of study. While many scholars investigate highly qualified immigrant’s integration processes, little is known about low qualified immigrant’s integration processes. This qualitative study specifically aims to explore the professional integration experience of low qualified immigrants by using the transition theory’s concepts. The data was collected during interviews with seven low qualified immigrants engaged in a socio-professional integration program. It allowed a better understanding of the motivations driving these people to enter the labour market with support from a socio-professional integration program, to identify personal and environmental attributes favorizing this process and to explore adaptations enabling its orderly conduct

This thesis focuses on issues regarding educational justice in Canadian higher education institutions. We are specifically interested in the low education rates of indigenous university students. We adopted an intersectional perspective and chose to exclusively work with indigenous women pursuing higher education at the university level. The analysis of the school career of indigenous women is particularly enlightening to better understand the justice −or injustice− of Canadian educational systems because of the complexity of the multiple forms of oppression they face. The social justice theory of Amartya Sen, founded on the capability approach, and the main concepts to which it relates, shape the basis of this study’s theoretical and conceptual framework. This theory focuses on the individuals’ choices of being and doing. The main objective of this thesis is to assess the influence of the context of studies on the possibilities of indigenous women to achieve the school career they want. Based on a multicase study, we investigated two universities in the province of Quebec (Canada). One of the universities offers very limited support to indigenous students, while the other has numerous measures, policies and services directed towards indigenous students. In each university, we conducted a three-staged data collection process: a) an educational policy analysis (national, provincial and of local policies); b) semi-structured interviews with staff members (faculty and administrative staff) on their professional experience with indigenous students; and c) life story interviews with indigenous women about their school careers. Our multidimensional analysis process looked at different social levels. At the macrosocial level, we conducted a literature review of the respondents' contexts of study. At the mesosocial level, we conducted a thematic analysis of the data gathered from interviews with university staff. At the microsocial level, we made a thematic analysis of the students' school careers. To conclude the analysis, we did a cross-sectional analysis of these three levels of data, which allowed us to meet our research objective. This thesis provides several interesting conclusions. Our results identify the effects of international, national, provincial and local initiatives on the deployment of our participants’ educational possibilities. Full textThe recent transformations in the organization of work have upset the integration and job-retention processes of employees, especially women, who are increasingly confronted by forms of precarious, temporary and atypical work. And how does this translate to female executives, one of the highest socio-professional categories in the labour market? The aim of this thesis is to understand the subjective experiences of female executives regarding their integration, mobility and job retention processes. This research is based on a conceptual framework which integrates three theoretical perspectives to consider the female executives’ experiences. The methodology is based on a narrative research. As such, 51 individual interviews were conducted with female executives using a back-andforth process between the collection, processing and analysis of the material. The interviews were analyzed using a phenomenological examination of materials and conceptual categories to foster a deep understanding of their experiences. These analysis strategies helped to build a theorization process centred around the specific purpose and objectives of the research. Following the completion, processing and analysis of the individual interviews, three group interviews were conducted with the volunteer participants from the one-on-one interviews. These group interviews helped to further refine the theorization process. The results reveal the desire of several female executives to hold both their professional projects (supervision and management) with other life projects, such as family, personal and school projects. Throughout their professional life, female executives navigate through different areas of tension and conflict. They also experience significant tension between their professional, marital and family life. The processing and analysis of the material shows that many female executives seek to find their place in the labour market, a place where they can make a difference with their leadership role by making a human, social and financial contribution to an organization. As such, they seek a place that allows them to integrate several life projects at the same time while reducing the sacrifices necessary to do so, as well as a place where they can grow and be accomplished through their work. However, this place is not readily given them. Rather, for each of the female executives, this place must be created, defined, clarified and negotiated throughout their career path. As a consequence, they develop different work integration strategies as well as various strategies to maintain themselves in the executive sphere. Moreover, the opportunity to find this workplace depends greatly on the organizational and life contexts in which they find themselves and the social relationships they face. This in turn influences the work recognition dynamics and the construction of their identity. The analysis of this thesis highlights the different choices, renunciations and compromises made by v female executives in light of the strategies they mobilize to integrate themselves to their workplace and maintain their executive position. Finally, the female executives’ various pathways to emancipation through the work are identified and discussed.

Full textIn the Arctic, indigenous populations living off marine mammals and fish consumption may be exposed to high doses of methylmercury (MeHg). Furthermore, since their availability varies over months, there is every reason to believe that exposure to MeHg also varies from month to month. There are still significant knowledge gaps with respect to geographic and temporal variations in MeHg exposure and about country foods responsible for MeHg exposure, particularly for pregnant women in Nunavik. Several findings from the Nunavik Child Development Study highlight that fetal life is a critical moment to prevent MeHg exposure in order to avoid neurodevelopmental outcomes later in childhood. Accordingly, in 2011, the Nunavik Regional Board of Health and Social Services (NRBHSS) released and disseminated a dietary recommendation for pregnant and childbearing age women to reduce their consumption of beluga meat. The aim of the present study was to characterize the geographic and temporal variations in MeHg exposure among Inuit women during pregnancy and to better identify country foods responsible for these variations. This cross-sectional study was carried out with pregnant women aged 16 and over in Nunavik between October 2016 and March 2017. Pregnant women were recruited on a voluntary basis and blood and hair samples were collected. An interview-administered questionnaire was used to gather information on pregnancy, country food frequencies of consumption by season and awareness of public health messages. Blood total Hg was measured using Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Hair total Hg was measured by centimeter as a surrogate for monthly exposure using Cold vapor atomic absorption spectrometry (CV-AAS). Multiple regressions analyses were done to assess the seasonal variation and the regional difference of mercury (Hg) levels. A latent class growth analysis was conducted to identify pregnant women with similar monthly trajectories in hair Hg levels over time. Based on the MeHg concentrations in country foods and consumption frequencies, their seasonal daily intake of MeHg was estimated. In total, 97 pregnant women from the 13 of the 14 Nunavik communities were recruited. Up to 23% of participants had blood Hg levels above the Health Canada guideline (≥ 8 µg/L) at the recruitment time (Oct 2016 – March 2017). While no regional difference in hair and blood Hg were observed in this period, sequential Hg hair analyses show important monthly variations in Hg exposure over the past year as Hg hair concentrations were significantly higher in summer (< 0.05) and lower in winter (p < 0.001) Three latent classes (groups) of pregnant women with similar trajectories of Hg hair monthly variations were identified: high variation (n=20, 22%), moderate variation (n=38, 41%) and low variation over time (n=35, 38%). Beluga meat was the country food generally contributing to most of daily MeHg intake within each group of pregnant women for all seasons, but primarily in the summer. Beluga meat intake was also the only country food associated to the odd of being classified into moderate and high hair Hg monthly variations groups (OR = 1.19 [1.01-1.39] for moderate versus low; OR = 1.25 [1.04 -1.50] for high versus low). Only one-third (35%) of pregnant women were aware of the public health message recommending to reduce their consumption of beluga meat. Our study shows a high MeHg exposure among Nunavik pregnant women, particularly in the summer, and that beluga meat consumption was the primary source of exposure to MeHg among these women. This study also highlight the importance of documenting the seasonality in country foods consumption before conducting biomonitoring studies in order to more adequately assess MeHg exposure on an annual basis. Given the high prevalence of food insecurity in Nunavik and the central role that country foods play in the culture and nutritional status of Inuit, a more consolidated approach together with local health professionals and targeted dietary counselling as summer is coming and in villages where beluga meat is often consumed may be promising avenues for preventing MeHg exposure while promoting traditional foods for healthy pregnancies and children in Nunavik.

Full textThe purpose of this action research was to investigate the dynamics of health education in elementary schools. Many physical educators remain preoccupied by children’s health and lifestyle. They are looking for efficient ways to develop and implement learning tasks that would promote a healthy and active lifestyle among their pupils. This study was conducted in collaboration with four experienced practitioners and a consultant/researcher. Four student groups were involved; children were aged between 7 and 10 (n = 102). The ecological model served as a conceptual frame of reference to describe the nature, the content and the development of health learning tasks, and to identify factors that would explain pupils’ level of cooperation during the teaching/learning process. Data were collected by means of the researcher’s observational notes, interviews with the physical educators and the pupils, and analyses of pupils’ productions. An inductive analysis of the data shows that the practitioners make use of two types of learning tasks in order to bring the pupils to adopt a healthy lifestyle and to develop knowledge about it. They use, among other strategies, a type of contract to help children engage by themselves into a modification process of their lifestyle over a period of many months. Many factors might explain the pupils’ degree of cooperation. The accountability system acts as a support in their self-management process and they choose to involve themselves without exchanging grades for performance. Furthermore, they receive social support and acknowledgment from adults who are aware of their efforts and actions. Results also indicate that practitioners’ knowledge and beliefs play a central role in the decision making process as it relates to the planning and implementation of learning tasks in health education at the elementary school level.

Full textObjectives: This master’s thesis explores the learning gained from an internship experience within an "alternative" model of organization of front-line services and its potential application in subsequent medical practice. Method: The exploratory qualitative study is based on twelve interviews with practicing doctors who completed an internship at La Maison Bleue, our research environment; and three interviews conducted with key informants from La Maison Bleue, and from the health and social services network and academic institutions, involved in the management of internships. Results: The main lessons learned from the internship experience are related to: (1) taking into account people in their globality and in their context; (2) a reflexive perspective favorable to the deconstruction of prejudices and the questioning of norms, leading to a less stigmatizing approach; (3) the richness and scope of enhanced practice from an interdisciplinary perspective; (4) the definition of professional identity. Organizational barriers to the application of learning, based on the philosophy of the health and social services system and characteristics specific to the practice environment, have been identified. Facilitating factors have, for their part, been more identified on the human level but seem to have, ultimately, only a marginal effect on the real capacity of physicians to implement learning into their practice. Conclusions: This study highlighted the presence, within the Quebec health and social services system, of primary care physicians who express a desire to practice medicine differently in order to meet the needs and expectations of populations in vulnerable situations. The results of our study suggest the need for organizational awareness of the barriers that these physicians experience in implementing a practice in accordance with their values, ideals and identities.

Full textA critical discourse on the contemporary public school systems denounces the loss of transcendent teaching ideals, which would manifest itself in the weakening authority of the pedagogical tradition, and by gradually forgetting the emancipator and reflexive vocation of education. As a starting point for this thesis, three elements (public education, transcendent authority and teaching ideals) helped us understand the sense of the Québécois state education for its founders. Inspired by work of Émile Durkheim and Max Weber, we compare the original ideals of the Québécois state education with an ideal type of the modern teaching ideal, based on reflections from Rousseau, Condorcet and Hegel. This ideal supports both the valorization of an active human autonomy (in modern philosophy) and the trust in the benefits of human freedom (in western liberalism, questioning any abusive authority). The ideal of civilisation in constant evolution, however, maintains the authority of teaching’s tradition as an essential source of reflexivity, and thus for its role in acquiring wisdom. The analysis of the ideals expressed in school projects and laws from 1789 to 1875, and of the authority implementing them, highlighted the prevalence of a concern for the political society in development. This society was characterized by the awareness of multiple identity attachments and the distance with European metropolises. With each new law, the tolerance between Catholics and Protestants, and the acceptance of the linguistic differences between French-speaking and English-speaking people were maintained, leading to a tight separation between two cultural communities. In spite of this growing division, these laws enforced the ideal of the state education common to the French-speaking and English-speaking liberals by creating higher degree schools following elementary education, as a stepping-stone towards classical colleges. This ideal combined the utilitarian and universal intellectual vocations of public education. For the French Canadians, this was a mean of collective emancipation in the political society and towards the evolution of civilization. The teaching authority of the State remained quite limited until it was gradually granted to the religious authorities.

Full textThis thesis analyzes the integration process of recent immigrant women living in Quebec City. It allows these women to define integration in their own terms, based on their personal perspectives. Furthermore, this research emphasizes the importance of social networks for these women in everyday life. For them, it appears that building social network constitutes a strategy towards integration. Paradoxically, even if they constitute a great source of support, their family networks sometimes restrain them in the achievement of their goals. In spite of having what seemed to be an advantageous situation upon their arrival in Quebec (family, economic category, highly educated), many of these women after two years in Quebec were still having a lot to go through to reach their own integration goals. Several of them were still facing the menace of isolation.

Full textThis thesis aims to show the importance of textile hobbies for the identity of Quebecois women, in the way they socialize, in the expression of their feelings for those they love, in the development of their creativity and in the balance of their mental and physical health. It also focuses on the history of textile arts in the province of Quebec, what techniques are still transmitted today and how this transmission of knowledge takes place. It deals with personal development, technical emulation, passion, and the relationship to death. Finally, it examines the relationship to the handmade object, its ethical, political or ecological character. The analysis draws on ethnographic interviews with 41 women practicing textile arts as a hobby and an artisan of fibers from different parts of the province of Québec and from the Ottawa region in the province of Ontario.
