Abstract:
In January 1942, Soviet photographers came upon a scene like none they had ever documented. That day, they took pictures of the first liberation of a German mass atrocity site, where an estimated seven thousand Jews and others were executed at a trench near Kerch on the Crimean peninsula. Dmitri Baltermants, a photojournalist working for the Soviet newspaper Izvestiia, took pictures that day that would have a long life in shaping the image of Nazi genocide in and against the Soviet Union. Presenting never-before-seen photographs, Grief: The Biography of a Holocaust Photograph shows how Baltermants used the image of a grieving woman to render this gruesome mass atrocity into a transcendentally human tragedy. David Shneer tells the story of how one photograph from the trench became much more widely known than the others, eventually being titled Grief. Baltermants turned this shocking atrocity photograph into a Cold War–era artistic meditation on the profundity and horror of war that today can be found in Holocaust archives as well as art museums and at art auctions. Although the journalist documented murdered Jews in other pictures he took at Kerch, in Grief there are likely no Jews among the dead or the living, save for the possible officer securing the site. Nonetheless, Shneer shows that this photograph must be seen as an iconic Holocaust photograph. Unlike emaciated camp survivors or barbed-wire fences, Shneer argues, the “Holocaust by bullets” in the Soviet Union makes Grief a quintessential Soviet image of Nazi genocide.

Abstract:
This chapter reviews the operation of the main elements of the Prudential Regulatory Authority’s (PRA) and the Financial Conduct Authority’s (FCA) prudential regulation. Prudential regulation concerns culture, systems, governance, and risk management as well as capital resources. The standards attached to each of these elements are explained in this chapter. It also considers the extra requirements placed on qualifying banks by the recovery and resolution regime, as well as the need to ring fence retail and other core services.

Pearson, Michael, and Jane Lennon. Pastoral Australia. CSIRO Publishing, 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9780643100503.

Full text
Abstract:
Pastoral Australia tells the story of the expansion of Australia's pastoral industry, how it drove European settlement and involved Aboriginal people in the new settler society. The rural life that once saw Australia 'ride on the sheep's back' is no longer what defines us, yet it is largely our history as a pastoral nation that has endured in heritage places and which is embedded in our self-image as Australians. The challenges of sustaining a pastoral industry in Australia make a compelling story of their own. Developing livestock breeds able to prosper in the Australian environment was an ongoing challenge, as was getting wool and meat to market. Many stock routes, wool stores, abattoirs, wharf facilities, railways, roads, and river and ocean transport systems that were developed to link the pastoral interior with the urban and market infrastructure still survive. Windmills, fences, homesteads, shearing sheds, bores, stock yards, travelling stock routes, bush roads and railheads all changed the look of the country. These features of our landscape form an important part of our heritage. They are symbols of a pastoral Australia, and of the foundations of our national identity, which will endure long into the future.

Abstract:
Home ranges of males (1204 km2) and females (1510 km2) were similar. Female home range size was positively related to the dispersion of prey and generally, but not exclusively, they displayed home range fidelity. Overlap between female home ranges was extensive, although they rarely met up. Male home ranges overlapped extensively and there was no difference in size between coalition and single males. Males overcame the problem of scent marking a large home range by concentrating scent marks in core areas. Generally female cheetah home range size is affected by resource productivity, although where prey are migratory, or in fenced reserves where movements are constricted, and areas where disturbance is severe, this may be different. Southern Kalahari males apparently need large home ranges to increase the likelihood of locating wide-ranging and sporadically receptive females. Mean dispersal distance for subadult males (96 km) was further than for females (39 km).

Farb, Benson, and Dan Margalit. Teichmuller Space. Princeton University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.23943/princeton/9780691147949.003.0011.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter deals with Teichmüller space Teich(S) of a surface S. It first defines Teichmüller space and a topology on Teich(S) before giving two heuristic counts of its dimension. It then describes explicit coordinates on Teich(Sɡ) coming from certain length and twist parameters for curves in a pair of pants decomposition of Sɡ; these are the Fenchel–Nielsen coordinates on Teich(Sɡ). The chapter also considers the Teichmüller space of the torus and concludes by proving the 9g – 9 theorem, which states that a hyperbolic structure on Sɡ is completely determined by the lengths assigned to 9g – 9 isotopy classes of simple closed curves in Sɡ.

Broberg, Morten, and Niels Fenger. Broberg and Fenger on Preliminary References to the European Court of Justice. 3rd ed. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198843580.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This fully updated and revised 3rd edition of Preliminary References to the European Court of Justice provides a meticulous and yet easily accessible examination of all aspects of the preliminary reference procedure. A reference for a preliminary ruling is a request from a national court of an EU Member State to the European Court of Justice to give an authoritative interpretation on an EU act or a decision on the validity of such an act. Preliminary rulings have played a pivotal role in the development of the European Union. The European Union’s preliminary reference procedure has been copied by several other international organisations – including not least the European Economic Area (EEA) and the EFTA Court. Since the second edition, the European Court of Justice has rendered a considerable number of rulings which have led to important changes to the book. This is particularly reflected in the treatment of the Court’s acte clair doctrine, of preliminary references from administrative appeal boards and arbitration tribunals and of preliminary references regarding international agreements. And it is reflected in the interaction between the preliminary reference procedure and the European Convention on Human Rights as well as in a more general revision of the text bringing it up to date by taking into account new case law and new legal writings. With backgrounds as both practitioners and academics the two authors have produced a book that caters for the needs of both practitioners and academics.

Hollis, Murray. Practical Straw Bale Building. CSIRO Publishing, 2005. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9780643092143.

Full text
Abstract:
Building with straw bales is being embraced by amateurs and professionals for its versatility, comfort, environmental friendliness and high insulation. New methods should expand its growing worldwide popularity. In Practical Straw Bale Building, Murray Hollis uses simple, easy to understand language to describe the established techniques of straw bale construction and ways in which they can be improved. He also presents a new straw bale construction system that has substantial benefits over current methods. This system incorporates a new tensioning system that replaces the use of fence strainers for tensioning the hold-down/compression wires and eliminates uneven tensioning on opposite sides of the wall. It also allows for fabricating wall modules on-site as horizontal modules that are then swung into the vertical wall position after fabrication. Aspects of structures other than walls are addressed only to the extent that they are relevant to the use of straw bales, e.g. issues such as types of floors, roof structures and methods of heating or cooling. The innovative methods in this book will help to progress straw bale building technology and move it into the mainstream of the building industry.

Abstract:
Subsisting on peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and often sleeping in his windowless concrete rehearsal room nestled between his guitar and amplifier, thirty-three-year-old rapper-turned-rocker Jimmy hopes to make it as a rock star. A disciple of guitar greats Clapton, Page, and Hendrix, Jimmy sets out to craft the ultimate hook-heavy guitar song. As the lead singer, rhythm guitarist, lead guitarist, bassist, and “drummer” (he plays the drums on his computer with his index fingers), Jimmy exemplifies the DAW-dependent one-man-band. A self-described producer, Jimmy applies his knowledge and skills as a hip-hop DJ to his rock compositions. Recording technologies such as Pro Tools and Waves plugins are as important to his songwriting as his beloved Fender Stratocaster guitar.

Shamshad, Rizwana. Bangladeshi Migrants in India. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199476411.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
In January 2011, Felani Khatun was shot dead while attempting to cross the border from India to Bangladesh. Her body remained hung on the fence as a warning to those who illegally crossed an international border. Migration to India from the current geographical and political entity called Bangladesh is more than a century old and had begun long before the nation states were created in South Asia. Often termed as ‘foreigners’ and ‘infiltrators’, Bangladeshi migrants such as Felani find their way into India for the promise of a better future. Post 1971, there has been a steady movement of people from Bangladesh into India, both as refugees and for economic need, making this migration a complex area of inquiry. This book focuses on the contemporary issue of undocumented Bangladeshi migration to the three Indian states of Assam, West Bengal, and Delhi, and how the migrants are perceived in light of the ongoing discourses on the various nationalisms in India. Each state has a unique history and has taken different measures to respond to Bangladeshi migrants present in the state. Based on extensive fieldwork and insightful interviews with influential members from key political parties, civil society organizations, and Hindu and ethnic nationalist bodies in these states, the book explores the place and role of Bangladeshi migrants in relation to the inherent tension of Indian nationalism.

Abstract:
The present volume, being a consequence to the ELPIS network members' variety, follows the tradition of its predecessors in dealing with various questions of European law (including more specific questions of European legal education) whereby questions of the Union's Economic Law, more specifically in the context of the topics of insolvency law, autonomous driving, ship dismantling and certain effects of European criminal law are analysed. It also deals with issues of human rights due to differing views on society, which are in particular characterized by realism; the latter can also be found (and heard) in "legalistic" works by a contemporary of Stahl, Johann Strauss' Father (1804-1849) and his descendants.
