Abstract:
The development of ecological architectural theory in China and the revival of traditional feng-shui theory have become a huge driving force for the development of eco-building today. In this paper a comparative study of ancestral halls in east Hubei province is made from the perspective of building orientation, topography, building space and building materials and other elements related to both eco-building and feng-shui theory and a conclusion is reached that the essence of feng-shui theory is consistent to the ideology of contemporary ecological architectural theory, which the author hopes will provide some references and a scientific basis for the sustainable development of ecological buildings with Chinese characteristics in China.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine the applicability of feng shui ideas for sustainable space planning and evaluation in the Korean contemporary architecture system. This study compares theories of feng shui and ecological architecture, draws implications in terms of its practicability with an accreditation system, and explores the possibility of replacing elements from ecological architecture with those of feng shui. First, this study analyzed the terrain, climate, and environment by selecting target sites for planning a hanok, the traditional Korean residence, as a suitable location (called myeong-dang). Simulation assessments were then performed with three-dimensional (3D) mapping techniques to derive the scientific basis of the traditional concept considered in the selection of these spots. Our result from the analysis showed that the terrain element played protective roles for the climate of the region as an environmental control system. Therefore, it can be concluded that feng shui thoughts could be applied to a contemporary architecture system.

Abstract:
Bedroom Feng Shui practices have been criticized as myth over the years but in fact having its scientific origin that is not purely superstitious. This paper aims to examine whether the architects' design practice for bedroom interior arrangement is concurring with the recommended bedroom Feng Shui practices. The study has successfully interviewed 16 architects from diverse backgrounds to avoid bias, seeking their design perspectives in bedroom interior configuration. Subsequently, the interviewees submitted sketches of ideal bedroom layout based on their expertise, with pre-set requirements. Data from semi-structured interviews were analyzed using mixed method approach. In agreement with our expectations, majority of the interviewees have matching thoughts that “bed arrangement” is the primary consideration in bedroom interior configuration. Most of the design outputs were highly attached to favorable Feng Shui conditions. The overall findings implied that bedroom Feng Shui is not merely superstitious but most components are practical design references for architects from diverse backgrounds.

Abstract:
Feng shui is a traditional Chinese art of creating a supportive living environment. Despite many research contributions on feng shui, very few verify (comparatively or experimentally) the actual effectiveness of feng shui recommendations. Even the architectural profession has never clearly denied its opinion on feng shui. This comparative analysis seeks to determine whether 118 selected feng shui school of form recommendations are consistent with the recommendations of Alexander et al.’s pattern language and with selected findings in environmental psychology. The results support this, showing that 34% of the recommendations (or forty recommendations out of 118 in total) are consistent with pattern language and that 45% (or fifty-three recommendations) are fully or partially consistent with the findings of environmental psychology. Altogether, more than half of the recommendations (57%, or sixty-seven recommendations) are consistent (indirectly confirmed) by one or the other knowledge system, which means that it is very likely that these recommendations will actually have the promised impact on users of physical space. Twenty-seven feng shui recommendations (or 23% out of the 118) are doubly consistent, of which most are related to the five-animals feng shui model, the importance of the presence of water and natural light in the living environment, and the importance of the main entrance. The bulk of the recommendations, which remain unaddressed, relate to the Chinese concept of living energy, or qi.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to examine whether eum-taek, a feng shui theory for the dead, can be applied to Korean modern architecture. In the first step, common environmental factors that are valued in both feng shui and ecological architecture were derived, and then this research reviewed how properly the traditional site assessment method evaluated them; for example, metaphorized basic concepts of the evaluation theory based on territorial settings can be applied to evaluate common environmental factors. For the second step, this paper reviewed whether the evaluation method for feng shui presented in the previous step was applied equally between yang-taek and eum-taek theories, investigated the differences between them in general, and derived environmental factors to be utilized for evaluation in the field of architecture. As a result, it was found that the major concepts presented in the previous step have been commonly used evaluation criteria, regardless of the categories from traditional theories. The third step was to simulate whether sites selected by each theory actually have similar environmental conditions. The simulation analysis found that all analysis sites were able to obtain a higher sun exposure time than the Korean average; therefore, it was considered that their locations could have environmental advantage, in terms of solar radiation and thermal environment. The simulation results confirm that the target sites have a living environment that would be easy for humans to live in. Finally, the simulation results confirm that the eum-taek site has a living environment that is comfortable for humans to live in. If studies of the site assessment method are carried out considering yang-taek and eum-taek with different evaluation categories, the modern applicability of feng shui may increase.

Abstract:
Cosmology is of essence for the life of traditional man not only to live in a meaningful universe, but to bound himself with the universe to achieve well-being as well. Architecture is a way of creating spaces through generic forms and symbols to attain this unity of man and the universe. This article interprets the courtyard house which is a well known archetype of spiritual and celestial qualities and has symbolic generic forms through the perspective of theory and practice of feng shui which is an ancient Chinese philosophy, based on the understanding of physical configuration of geographical settings and application of its principles to the built environment. The courtyard houses represented for this article are chosen on a linear axis starting from Cyprus, passing through Syria, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, and ending at China. In this article, principles of feng shui are selected and formulated to create an evaluation model showing entrance-courtyard relation, building shape, water element, room arrangement, and door alignment and circulation. Based on this evaluation model, the essential aspects of well-being have been revealed through the elements of architecture. In that sense, this article presents the opportunities and possibilies of an ideal plan layout by bringing an awareness to the cosmology and feng shui to achieve well-being.

Abstract:
This thesis was undertaken to unravel hitherto unattended histories of the built environment with particular reference to traditional East Asian architecture and the German organic tradition in the Modern Movement in 1920s Europe. The thesis paid attention to an unclassifiable discipline of feng shui with respect to architecture and urbanism within the intellectual tradition of East Asia. The thesis has elucidated that feng shui can properly be considered neither an art nor a science from the Western epistemological viewpoint, but a melange of arts and sciences which governs diverse human interests inclusive of architecture and urbanism, and is also the vehicle to embody an ancient cosmology. As opposed to the East Asian paradigm in architecture, the thesis intended to reveal a historical meaning of modern traditions in architecture in its emerging period, examining exactly how the dynamic forces of modern architecture could thread into Western modernism in general. The Puginian Gothic Revival and the Instrumentalism of J. N. L. Durand are considered as emerging currents of the Modern Movement in architecture: an attitude still subscribing to a transcendental mode of existence, as against an opposing current which takes scientific rationality as its ultimate virtue. Two opposing yet complementary tendencies within the Modern Movement are thus recognised; Geometric versus Organic. The significant intellectual enterprise of organic architects, such as Theodor Fischer, Hugo Häring and Hans Scharoun, often mistakenly viewed as Expressionism, is studied in particular. The German organic tradition is further compared with the work of Frank Lloyd Wright whose concept of organic architecture included a keen interest in Japanese art and architecture, especially in art printing. In response to the call for alternative traditions in architecture, this thesis suggests that a paradigm beyond modern science and Orientalism is needed for the synthesis of East and West and of old and new.

Summary: This research proposes a new site analysis methodology in the form of an integrated framework. The framework separates the site analysis process into different models, incorporates each model, and considers the interaction between them. The most important models are the environmental models (climate, geology, hydrology, topography, and vegetation models), social-cultural models, economic models, and infrastructure models. Each model also contains several important factors. The study identifies and organizes environmental factors within the framework that influence site analysis and design. Based on the applicability of feng shui principles and their interpretations into measurable factors, this research compares and incorporates feng shui and contemporary environmental design theories, and summarizes essential environmental factors. The emphasis on environmental factors from these models may lead to a better understanding of the relationships between humankind and the natural environment.

Lynch, Erin S. "Feng Shui as a site design tool: Assessing conditions of human comfort in urban places." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/292072.

Full text
Abstract:
Feng Shui as a site design tool seeks a different spectrum of criteria in the observation and assessment of a site than that of contemporary site design. It is a method based on the understanding and observation of the energetic conditions within and surrounding a site. Energetic conditions are perceptible. It requires an additional level of awareness to be able to identify what it is that causes a space to feel the way it does. Feng Shui may provide the additional level of consideration that when incorporated in the design process, facilitates spaces that may more effectively fulfill their purpose and feel good to the people using them. This study assessed a variety of existing urban places in Tucson, Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe, and Sedona, AZ. for conditions of human comfort based on (1) Feng Shui principles, and (2) contemporary site design recommendations. Current research on the topic of Feng Shui is limited to its application in land planning. This qualitative study applied the principles of Feng Shui as criteria in the evaluation of urban spaces. Results of the study indicate that well designed places from a Feng Shui standpoint were also perceived as well designed from a contemporary site design vantage. The outcome suggests the value of incorporating Feng Shui as a tool in the site design process used by Western designers.

Abstract:
The Feng shui brings together the knowledge of the Chinese on the notions of time, space, environment and all the building infrastructures. It is indeed Feng shui has guided, from its "coming" almost all the buildings constructed for the living and for the dead in China. Modern ecology and environmental protection are the top priorities to be considered in architectural design. Faced with the idea transmitted by the Feng shui, we can’t help thinking that such ancient discipline, very focused on the environment and housing, can serve as a reference and inspiration in the design of contemporary architecture and treatment of the environment. The basic question of this research is to know what was, or what were, the true (s) source (s) of the doctrine of Feng shui. Through our research, we want to take a step back to the multitude of methods of Feng Shui, and intended to fully concentrate on their cross philosophy, and try to synthesize the different approaches that can have globally of the Feng shui. We have found two major "red threads" of Feng shui .First thread: the "qi 气" is the basic material of the composition of the world. Second thread: Temporality and action of Heaven understood as an impersonal power and instructing exerted on the world through natural regularities. This research is in order to build a research facility on the topic of "the application of Feng Shui in contemporary architectural and environment design" and we hope that this first step will be considered important to the continued reflection

Ellis, Eugenia Victoria. "SQUARING THE CIRCLE: The Regulating Lines of Claude Bragdon's Theosophic Architecture." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/26491.

Full text
Abstract:
Traditionally, squaring the circle has been about bringing the incommensurable work of the gods within the realm of the commensurate by using infinite cosmic principles to regulate the finite world. The American architect Claude Bragdon (1866-1946) squared the circle using his Theosophic architectural theory that was based on a neo-Pythagorean emphasis on Number, which he believed to have contained the secret of the universe. America at the turn of the 20th century was interested in Eastern spirituality at the beginning of an age of scientific relativity when the world and universe were being questioned due to new scientific discoveries based on higher-dimensional mathematical speculations that challenged relationships between humankind and the cosmos. Paralleling this scientific search was the Western conquest of the world on earth, which brought back speculations about the Near and Far East, including translations of their ancient scriptures and encyclopedias of their architecture. The fourth dimension was an imaginary mathematical (re)creation of great interest to Bragdon and common to scientific relativity and Eastern spirituality; two cultural constructs that altered the perception of time and space to affect the American imagination and architectural production. Within this context, Squaring the Circle investigates the relationship of theory to practice by considering Bragdonâ s architecture as the material manifestation of his Theosophic architectural theory.

Abstract:
In mid-1600s, Ryukyu reformed government to better align with Tokugawa Japan. This chapter details how class distinctions were codified and genealogies (kafu) became important, and also provides a description of the reorganized royal government. Ryukyu learned to play both sides—remaining a tributary state of China, and a vassal of Satsuma. Ryukyu began to “sinify” as a means to counterbalance Satsuma’s rule; yet Satsuma also benefited, since its “vassal,” Ryukyu, thereby maintained China’s trust. This chapter details aspects of Chinese culture, including architecture, feng shui, and family names, which Ryukyu embraced. The Kumemura district, home of many Chinese and Chinese scholars, gained importance. Selected Ryukyu students were again permitted to study in China officially, and unofficial “working students” also joined tribute ships’ crews to study in China during long layovers there. Satsuma’s “policy of concealment” discouraged openly “Japanese” behavior among Ryukyuans, to persuade China that Ryukyu was independent from Japan.

This paper attempts to provide a model for meaning by reading the overlay as potential in a banal – if not bizarre – contemporary project: a Chinese theme park in Orlando Florida. This paper uses an experimental ‘witnessing7 of the park to lay out a series of spacio-conceptual models for travel as power. These range from looking at the theme park as a Chinese propaganda tool, through Bachelard’s concepts of miniaturization and collection, empirical (Chinese) versus theoretical (American) standards for life safety, spatial strategies of 1 lth century Dream Journey Scrolls, and Feng Shui (the art of Placement) The changing nature of architectural practice instigates a movement from building representations of singular architectural ideas to the constructions of more complex ‘programmatic fields.’ We need neither despise nor formally caricature the polyglot programmatic shifts and collisions of our time. This paper takes a hopeful stance, maintaining that the overlay of resonant paradigms provides an opportunity not realized, perhaps, in the existing construction.
