Abstract:
This thesis was undertaken to unravel hitherto unattended histories of the built environment with particular reference to traditional East Asian architecture and the German organic tradition in the Modern Movement in 1920s Europe. The thesis paid attention to an unclassifiable discipline of feng shui with respect to architecture and urbanism within the intellectual tradition of East Asia. The thesis has elucidated that feng shui can properly be considered neither an art nor a science from the Western epistemological viewpoint, but a melange of arts and sciences which governs diverse human interests inclusive of architecture and urbanism, and is also the vehicle to embody an ancient cosmology. As opposed to the East Asian paradigm in architecture, the thesis intended to reveal a historical meaning of modern traditions in architecture in its emerging period, examining exactly how the dynamic forces of modern architecture could thread into Western modernism in general. The Puginian Gothic Revival and the Instrumentalism of J. N. L. Durand are considered as emerging currents of the Modern Movement in architecture: an attitude still subscribing to a transcendental mode of existence, as against an opposing current which takes scientific rationality as its ultimate virtue. Two opposing yet complementary tendencies within the Modern Movement are thus recognised; Geometric versus Organic. The significant intellectual enterprise of organic architects, such as Theodor Fischer, Hugo Häring and Hans Scharoun, often mistakenly viewed as Expressionism, is studied in particular. The German organic tradition is further compared with the work of Frank Lloyd Wright whose concept of organic architecture included a keen interest in Japanese art and architecture, especially in art printing. In response to the call for alternative traditions in architecture, this thesis suggests that a paradigm beyond modern science and Orientalism is needed for the synthesis of East and West and of old and new.

Abstract:
UMI No. 3110307. "Authorized facsimile, made from the microfilm master copy of the original dissertation." Includes bibliographical references. Summary: This research proposes a new site analysis methodology in the form of an integrated framework. The framework separates the site analysis process into different models, incorporates each model, and considers the interaction between them. The most important models are the environmental models (climate, geology, hydrology, topography, and vegetation models), social-cultural models, economic models, and infrastructure models. Each model also contains several important factors. The study identifies and organizes environmental factors within the framework that influence site analysis and design. Based on the applicability of feng shui principles and their interpretations into measurable factors, this research compares and incorporates feng shui and contemporary environmental design theories, and summarizes essential environmental factors. The emphasis on environmental factors from these models may lead to a better understanding of the relationships between humankind and the natural environment.

Lynch, Erin S. "Feng Shui as a site design tool: Assessing conditions of human comfort in urban places." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/292072.

Full text
Abstract:
Feng Shui as a site design tool seeks a different spectrum of criteria in the observation and assessment of a site than that of contemporary site design. It is a method based on the understanding and observation of the energetic conditions within and surrounding a site. Energetic conditions are perceptible. It requires an additional level of awareness to be able to identify what it is that causes a space to feel the way it does. Feng Shui may provide the additional level of consideration that when incorporated in the design process, facilitates spaces that may more effectively fulfill their purpose and feel good to the people using them. This study assessed a variety of existing urban places in Tucson, Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe, and Sedona, AZ. for conditions of human comfort based on (1) Feng Shui principles, and (2) contemporary site design recommendations. Current research on the topic of Feng Shui is limited to its application in land planning. This qualitative study applied the principles of Feng Shui as criteria in the evaluation of urban spaces. Results of the study indicate that well designed places from a Feng Shui standpoint were also perceived as well designed from a contemporary site design vantage. The outcome suggests the value of incorporating Feng Shui as a tool in the site design process used by Western designers.

Abstract:
The Feng shui brings together the knowledge of the Chinese on the notions of time, space, environment and all the building infrastructures. It is indeed Feng shui has guided, from its "coming" almost all the buildings constructed for the living and for the dead in China. Modern ecology and environmental protection are the top priorities to be considered in architectural design. Faced with the idea transmitted by the Feng shui, we can’t help thinking that such ancient discipline, very focused on the environment and housing, can serve as a reference and inspiration in the design of contemporary architecture and treatment of the environment. The basic question of this research is to know what was, or what were, the true (s) source (s) of the doctrine of Feng shui. Through our research, we want to take a step back to the multitude of methods of Feng Shui, and intended to fully concentrate on their cross philosophy, and try to synthesize the different approaches that can have globally of the Feng shui. We have found two major "red threads" of Feng shui .First thread: the "qi 气" is the basic material of the composition of the world. Second thread: Temporality and action of Heaven understood as an impersonal power and instructing exerted on the world through natural regularities. This research is in order to build a research facility on the topic of "the application of Feng Shui in contemporary architectural and environment design" and we hope that this first step will be considered important to the continued reflection

Ellis, Eugenia Victoria. "SQUARING THE CIRCLE: The Regulating Lines of Claude Bragdon's Theosophic Architecture." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/26491.

Full text
Abstract:
Traditionally, squaring the circle has been about bringing the incommensurable work of the gods within the realm of the commensurate by using infinite cosmic principles to regulate the finite world. The American architect Claude Bragdon (1866-1946) squared the circle using his Theosophic architectural theory that was based on a neo-Pythagorean emphasis on Number, which he believed to have contained the secret of the universe. America at the turn of the 20th century was interested in Eastern spirituality at the beginning of an age of scientific relativity when the world and universe were being questioned due to new scientific discoveries based on higher-dimensional mathematical speculations that challenged relationships between humankind and the cosmos. Paralleling this scientific search was the Western conquest of the world on earth, which brought back speculations about the Near and Far East, including translations of their ancient scriptures and encyclopedias of their architecture. The fourth dimension was an imaginary mathematical (re)creation of great interest to Bragdon and common to scientific relativity and Eastern spirituality; two cultural constructs that altered the perception of time and space to affect the American imagination and architectural production. Within this context, Squaring the Circle investigates the relationship of theory to practice by considering Bragdonâ s architecture as the material manifestation of his Theosophic architectural theory.

Zhang, Chunyan. "Le Fengshui contemporain : éthique de l'environnement et enseignement d'architecture du paysage." Paris, EHESS, 2010. http://www.theses.fr/2010EHES0133.

Full text
Abstract:
Fengshui touches on bath the natural and social environments. According to Augustin Berque:"Fengshui inscribes a morality in the landscape, and more particularly the one linked ta ancestor worship". For the Chinese, it represents a genuine ethics of the environrnent. Pedagogical approaches differ greatly from one country to another and from one school ta another. In China, Wang Sbu overturned traditional architecture teaching at the Fine Arts Acaderny of Hangzbou by giving priority to the environmental approach over the architectural one. Starting in the 1960s and 1970s, in France, Bernard Lassus similarly proposed "inventive analysis" as a way of working ail the site using a sensibility-based approach. In spite of this, many c6nternporary designers who have trained at architecture schools forget to take into consideration the poetics of our oikos our cultural landscape and to preserve it. Research into fengshui as an ethics of the environment is inscribed in this framework and is linked to the teaching given 10 architects and landscape architects

Abstract:
Today, as french housing is becoming « sustainable », it is time to question ourselves about the practice of alternative conceptions, like geobiology and fengshui. Two points of view are at stake : professional pratices and representations of the relation between environment and human being. What are this practices and representations developed by geobiology and fengshui practioners ? What can these traditional conceptions tell us about the prevalent environmental approach ? Which connexions possibly exist between them ?Two situations seem to shap : the geobiology and fengshui practitioners would have a holist and monist perception of the environment-humain being relation, while the architects of the environmental approach would have a naturalist one. Three main corpus compound the empirical research : 45 interviews with practitioners, an analysis of 18 reference books, and an analysis of 9 archtectural projects, all coming from the three housing conceptions studied.Rupture biographic paths and near professional practices for the geobiology and fengshui, varied representations of environment and human being clustered around big types, existence of a « transfer » phenomenon wich leads to the definition of qualititve ad ethical ways of being, or « habitabilities », are the main results of this reseach. Geobiology and fengshui are certainly able to interrogate architectural and urban production, as our ecology. It was the final goal of this reseach, which lies on diferent sociology fields, and tries to propose a multidsciplinary look which aimes at the definition of a philosophy of live-in and a socio-anthropology of housing

Abstract:
This thesis deals with complex processes, relationships and phenomena which go beyond the assumed and accepted materialistic perception of the world in general and the process of architectural design specifically. It clarifies and actually redefine the sustainability from a point of higher universal principles forming our environment. At the beginning this thesis presents an extensive knowledge base of existing holistic design systems including Feng-shui, sacred geometry, geomancy or numerology. The purpose is to build and establish a solid foundation for understanding and further research as well as objectively interpreting lesser known topics as a whole. On the basis of intersecting information through the above mentioned topics we specify the hypothesis which proposes the pre-existence of one unifying design matrix of harmonic structures in architecture. The structure of its verification takes us from an analysis of the science of human perception to systems of self-similar contextual references of animated and inanimated forms. These systems of emergent form and flow are basically known as fractals, and could be expressed in both mathematical and geometrical languages. The thesis research then consists of analysing chosen examples of urban and architectural scale in sense of fractality, symbolism and geometrical matrices. We include and integrate the research of associated and relevant phenomena in pedagogical practice, and a case study of the application of fractals in development of a chosen town. From the results of this thesis we abstract five non-dogmatic guidelines or tenets for architectural design; which are supported by experimental verification on some of the author´s buildings. These tenets stand as pillars of implosive architecture. This kind of architecture in context of transcendental overlaps means a possibility of how to bring our anthropogenic environment closer to the natural and harmonic code of the Universe.

Abstract:
Organic architecture is often used term especially in connection with the daring and experimental form. The exact definition or division is still missing. The founder of modern organic architecture is to be generally considered as Frank Loyd Wright. He was the man who created organic architecture and also made first definition in the early twentieth century, when formulating new architectural styles. Dissertation deals with insufficiently described problem of organic architecture. The main focus is on contemporary production of residential organic architecture in Central Europe. Especially on the particular realizations in Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovak Republic, Austria, Germany and Poland. Beside detail description of European realizations, the dissertation deals also with foundations of organic architecture in U.S.A. and important realizations here. Modern organic architecture primarily originated in the United States of America. The work presents most important contemporary realizations and architects creating resident living organic architecture in other countries around the world in order to complete the overview. The objective of dissertation was describing newest trends in designing buildings for living. Find position of organic architecture and give reasons for it´s increasing popularity, spread and necessity for new development in architecture according to the new trends. Organic architecture is an alternative way of contemporary residential living. It´s popularity is growing in last years in response to the development of modern technologies and materials, the need to protect our natural resources and also to the increasing negatives of globalization and to denial of local traditions and regional specificities. Aspects of organic forms were divided into three main groups according to their main characteristics: form, harmony and sustainable development. Another objective was find location of contemporary organic residential architecture in Czech Republic and abroad. It is rather spread all over the world than concentrated on certain places. Therefore I selected countries that are richer than the others on the occurrence of organic buildings. The objective was also to address architects, specialists, public and especially university teachers of architecture and students themselves. Communication with them was mainly connected with grant project in 2010. The theme of grant project was contemporary organic architecture in residential living. There were lectures about contemporary organic architecture and exhibition on the theme: Contemporary living organic architecture. The publication of the catalog was published under the title: Contemporary organic houses - Europe. I had the opportunity to visit a number of organic family houses abroad. Specifically houses in Slovakia, Hungary and Germany. Results of survey, which was realized by questions to owners and authors of chosen buildings, are included in dissertation. The mail results of dissertation are - make a detail review of organic architecture in residential living - define trends in contemporary organic architecture and residential living - obtain and process answers from owners and authors of chosen buildings within survey - analysis of organic house ( houses) in city planning and landscape - publication of catalogue focused on organic contemporary European houses - article about contemporary organic architecture and residential living will be published in 2012 on archiweb page

Abstract In traditional architectural culture and setting of living environment, ancient people do the environment evaluation depending on the accumulation and distribution of pass experience then start the construction. Accompanied with the merging of different cultures, the unique concept of “Feng Shui” is gradually developed under the accumulated living experience. At the same time, these concepts transform the enrich connotation and structures of traditional architectural culture. Therefore in the practice of the space setting in ancient architectures, we do need to study not only the building techniques but also the appearance of outlook style and connotation of inner space arrangement that is the foundation of the spirits of ancient architectures. Among the documents related to ancient architectures, it is rare to see the concepts of the constitution and mental evaluation of Feng Shui are applied. The reason might be the theory of ancient architecture is formed much earlier with highly mature performance on outlook forms and styles of the buildings. Therefore, while ancient architect is designing the blue print of the building, he just needs to follow “his master’s ways” to set up dimension figures accompanied with the social status of the owner and followed present social regulations, then he can build a fit building. This is a so-call ”building mode” in the behavior in traditional architectural culture constructed by the taboos and stated or oral regulations of folk’s culture. However, when we look into the mental works in pre-construct stage, ancient architects are looking for a balance and harmony between the building and the environment by not stepping over the barrier and get hurt. Knowing the fearfulness of the power of the Mother Nature, ancient people cautiously deal with it. This causes “Feng Shui” becomes the ultimate instructions and principles of evaluating the environment while designing and setting space no matter of city, town, government building, civilian house, tomb and garden. From the above, we can understand while studying the protection and maintenance (or its extension) of the ancient architectures, there are two aspects, “social aspect” and “environmental aspect” that need to be discussed. What the view of life “referring to” the metaphor of the existing in the ancient architecture field is the “post-assumption” behavior and inner spiritual thoughts of the ancients on house space arrangement. In the time of “current user using the ancient architecture” on the purpose of “maintained construction”, the main “interests” are seeking the original constitution of the pre-constructed ideas of the ancients by studying how we can apply their ideas of “Feng-Shui” to the layout of modern living environment and how we can enhance the accuracy of the construction plan for ancient architectures on the aspects of “archeology” and “maintenance”.

Feng Shui is an ancient geomancy related to traditional Chinese culture and philosophy for choosing residential locations. Feng Shui is also a classical Architecture and construction guidelines. Feng Shui analysis relates architecture to the environment. Therefore, Architecture Feng Shui is introduced by integrating the Feng Shui theories and developing an auspiciousness analysis procedure for Architecture design. Feng Shui consists of two prevalent Feng Shui schools: Form school principles are related to those elements that can be observed in the exterior situation and Compass school principles are related to the direction. On site Feng Shui analysis traditionally uses a Feng Shui compass to determine orientation and direction for each project element. Since most urban buildings are commonly surrounded by high rise buildings, it is not easy to identify the mountain and water dragons for Feng Shui auspiciousness analysis. Therefore, the street intersections surrounding building sites are interpreted as virtual water gates for the revised urban Feng Shui auspiciousness analysis. Addition, the Auspiciousness Knack and San-Yuan Suan-Kuang flying star Feng Shui analysis are also adopted in the auspiciousness analysis. This revised urban Feng Shui auspiciousness analysis procedure has been used successfully for the auspiciousness analysis of many urban project sites. Google Earth with the compass function can be a useful, advanced tool to assist in site direction determination. The remote sky viewing technique would also improve efficiency and reduce the time required in preliminary and final on-site Feng Shui analysis.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to understand, identify and test the fundamental qualities of feng shui so as to examine its applicability and relevance in western architectural design practice. While the word “feng shui” has gained popularity and even acceptance in North America during the last number of decades, its principles are not well understood or integrated in contemporary western architectural practice. This stands in strong contrast to eastern cities such as Hong Kong where very few structures are built without consulting a feng shui expert. Indeed, feng shui has a long history of contributing to the shaping of Chinese culture, where it is a practice that has influenced the form and planning of Chinese cities, palaces, villages and cemeteries alike. Critical to the practice of feng shui is the understanding of its roots, which reach deep into traditional Chinese observations about nature that are at once profoundly spiritual and practical. These observations led to a belief in the existence of a silent dialogue between man and nature that lies beneath the surface of all things. This dialogue is believed to be carried along by the flow of qi, the Chinese name for energy that animates all forms of life. The optimizing of this energy in order to benefit humankind became a key factor in the widespread popularity of feng shui. Based on these underpinnings it is easy to understand both the allure and mystification surrounding feng shui in western culture. This thesis rests upon the belief that the eastern practice of feng shui offers a long standing alternative approach to the western worldview of architecture, as well as a vastly different way of looking at the relationship between people and the environments they inhabit.

Abstract Geomancy or “Feng-Shui” is the wisdom of Chinese civilization, recorded and transmitted from generation to generation over thousands of years. The knowledge is unique not only to the Chinese but also widely accepted internationally into modern times, because of its scientific principles and academic value. Research into geomancy is relatively sparse, mostly conducted in the academic sphere, and without scientific support. The study is from the basis of my own first – hand research, combined with literature review and theories analysis, it is aimed to provide a better understanding of the science in modern times. The study divides into four sections. Firstly, it focuses on the constructional aspect and compares it with western buildings from the viewpoint of natural 、human and architectural aspects. Secondly, the research applies geomantic omen to the household, company, market, and factory .Thirdly, the findings will compare the geomantic omen knowledge with modern architecture, as well as modern interior design. Finally, the focus will be addressed on the buildings of modern household, company, market, and factory. I have been involved in China’s geomantic omen for many years and my work has shown that geomantic omen has its own scientific basis, and has a good prospect which is worth of investing more effort. It is my wish to pass on our ancestors’ wisdom to the younger generations. In “The Masque of the Red Death,” Edgar Allan Poe remarkably achieves the clarity of complex and dramatic spectacles--the Prince Prospero’s grotesque abbey and his elaborate masque--through his genius in language. This thesis aims to clarify the meaning (implications) of Prospero’s unusual abbey in the tale. The thesis attempts to examine the interrelationships between the Prince Prospero and his bizarre abbey from three different perspectives: Chinese feng-shui, modern environmental psychology and Jungian analysis. Chapter One investigates the function of Prospero’s unusual building. Its architectural anomalies include remoteness, seclusion, irregular architectural disposition, difficulty of access, orientation and colors. There is a complicated twofold structure here dealing with the bizarre setting by contrast between the perspectives of Chinese feng-shui and modern environmental psychology. Chapter Two examines Prince Prospero’s psychic transformation and its possible connection with his unusual abbey: how the bizarre setting develops Prospero’s delusion, compulsive behavior and subversive commanding figure. Chapter Three focuses the meaning of voluptuous decorations by Jungian analysis. Rather than the operation of the abbey upon Prospero in Chapter One, Jungian ideas stress the environment as a reflection of the human mind. Chapter Four explores Poe’s retarding devices─the masquerade toward the close of the fifth or sixth month of seclusion. The comparison between abbey and masquerade helps integrate the above three viewpoints.

ABSTRACT The discipline of Feng Shui, including the School of Luan Tou, the School of Li Chi, and traditional Feng Shui taboos, has much influence on Chinese concepts of space and their application. The study explores Chinese philosophy as shown in Zi Bai Fei Xing method advocated by the School of Li Chi, such as Yin Yang, Wu Xing, Ba Gua, He Luo Li Shu. Models for further application and practice are built. Based on practical use of the models, we can conclude that Feng Shui is a system that combines both theories and application. By adapting Zi Bai Fei Xing method to designing procedures, architects who are unfamiliar with Feng Shui can come across less conflicts resulted from different concepts of Feng Shui.

FengShui is perhaps the essence of traditional Chinese wisdom and can be seen as an integral part of Chinese culture. However , many building users and investors have their own folk beliefs about FengShui , which has deeply influenced the process of architectural planning and design. Therefore , for someone who likes to choose Architectural planning and design as a career , the knowledge of FengShui has become a must-read 'Study'. This research combines knowledge exists in architectural industry and to explore the mystery of traditional Chinese FengShui. The process includes selecting the appropriate factors from a list of complex ones, then evaluating the pros and cons of each appropriate FengShui factor and identifying the key effecting factor; the purpose is to help the designing decision towards sensible and logical direction and resulting in the ability to determine the best solution from alternatives. questionaires were distributed to fifteen professional residential architects in Tainan city with ten responses being obtained. An Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was used to anslyse the evaluating construction and to compare with the effecting FengShui factors by pairwise, as well as using Expert Choice computer software to calculate the information and to refine the eigenvalues and eigenvectors and to test if each pairwise comparison Matrix meets the requirement of consistency. The findings are as below: 1. The method of Sing-Fa(or Luan-Tou) could be as the main frame and then filled with Li-Fa (or Li-Chih). 2. Pay attention to the antecedents of the construction site's external environment and to avoid the source of evil Chih. 3. Focus on the site's boundary shape to be wide flat square (or rectengle) and site's location to be where can effectively collect Good (Fortunate) Chih. 4. Pay attention to the layout of paths to the entrance and to select the ideal facing direction. 5. Focus on the coordination of the interal appearance of building and the application of Door Yards.

This study plans to examine the between Chinese Feng Shui and traditional architecture, landscape and environmental planning. Though the process and analysis of “cleansing” and “demystification,” I intend to clarify the ambiguous and stereotypic understanding of feng Shui system, to remove the superstitious elements in the theoretical framework constructed with the fuzzy logic in Feng Shui, return it to its original features. In I-Ching, the rare book among the books and the first book among the Ching (literary and philosophical writings in Chinese), it is possible to locate the basic theoretical framework of Feng Shui, adding certain mystic elements to the subject. Similar to herb medicine, Feng Shui is constructed with Yin/Yang, the Five Elements, and qi (the spirit). In this project, I dare to propose that if Chinese herb medicine, originated from Yin/Yang, the Five Elements, and qi, can be prove to meet the criteria of western science, then Feng Shui, which bears similar origins to herb medicine, can also be proved to be scientific, at least to be scientifically practical. However, there are many elements in Feng Shui that have not been proved scientifically. Base on this assumption, this study aspire to prove if the above-mentioned thesis to be valid. Although no satisfactory result is achieved, I hope to throw out the brick to attract the jade (to light up the path leading more people to discover the terrain), returning the truth to the truth and to filter the dregs that are not truth, leaving the abyss of superstitions. This project begins with the treatment of the basic theory and schools in Feng Shui, in order to analyze its operation, theory, and practice. Further, I try to locate the convergence between western science and Feng shui in the aspects of qi field, the spiral nature of the cosmos, and the electromagnetic field. From such perspective, I would like to examine the impact of and the relationship between Feng Shui on traditional architecture, landscape, and the environment. However, this project has encountered some barriers. Some scholars point out that in addition to the features, such as voluminous, difficult, and chaotic in Feng Shui literature, it is extremely difficult to gather useful materials in the study of mysterious subject, like riding a horse in the wildemess and rowing a boat amidst the open sea. This is indecd the words from the heart. How to make the mysterious subject comprehensible from a macro view and to transform the garbage into gold is the difficult task I have when writing this thesis. After finishing, I hope it can be valuable experience for my future life, and the inspiration for the researchers to come. Feng Shui is the dogma followed by Chinese people in traditional architecture. Basically, it is the principle to evaluate fortune and misfortune. It has been a subject scorned by people from the appearance. But actually most people believe it to be valid, affecting the thought and everyday life of the Chinese people for centuries.

Abstract:
Due to the culture revolution, inflation of economy and globalization, China has been suffering from mass unqualified products of architecture, loss of culture and traditions, also unaffordable real estate; causing the instability of the society, in which emptiness, anxiety, uncertainty of people are occupied. Burdons must be released. And culture need to be revitalized. By studying I-Ching and Taoism, the origins of Chinese civilization, finding the philosophy of Tao which can be carried into architecture, the equilibrium between culture and globalization is established. The nation-wide uniformed apartments built under the welfare oriented housing distribution system in the 1980’s, are now either torn down or hidden behind the high rises and forgotten. The ones which are survived from the development of real estate, could be reconstructed to be a nice and affordable community where social interaction is encouraged, virtue of individual is cultivated and culture is renovated. In the philosophy of Tao, when one side is compelling and overwhelming, the counterpart could be perked up by yielding and returning. Therefore, in the design of the reconstruction, deduction is the motion of Tao. Introducing light scoops into the building to created horizontal and vertical courtyard, sunlight, rainwater and wind is able to come into the building. people is able to perceive the nature inside where balance of artificial and the nature is built. Also the light scoop divides the spaces into layers so that people have a private space to think as well as a semi-public space where social interactions are forced to happen. The space of light scoop is functionally blank, though. It is spiritually abondant.

The concept of geomantic omen. It has transformed into different geomantic studies in several thousand years’ cultural development. For Chinese, geomantic omen is an everlasting lesson more complicated than the selection of residence. The popularity of the geomantic omen results from religion, legend, mythology, augury, metaphysics, shamanism, and superstition. The human beings have started to choose their residence according to the environment. The accumulation of environmental experiences and the transformation of cultural thoughts form the enormous and complicated geomantic system. The principal discussion of the essay is about the environmental change around Kaohsiung Banping Mountain reflected by the temporal transformation of the community locations surrounding Banping Mountain. Because of the specific geology, the geomantic records describe Banping Mountain as a dangerous mountain implying ill omens. Its top is surrounded by Houjing River and its foot is besides Lianchih Pond, Turtle Mountain, and Snake Mountain. Its surrounding communities are Youchang, Houjing, Zuoying, Nanzih, Dashe, Renwu, and Niaosong. There are three divided periods in the essay: the end of the Qing reign and the early period of the Japanese reign (1661-1895), Japanese colonial period (1895-1945), and the KMT reign till modern times (1945-2008). The essay explores, when the location and direction of community buildings in each period are changed, or when the landform of Banping Mountain is changed, whether the geomantic concepts are influenced. Or there are other reasons for the changed location of buildings. The contents of the study contains: the first chapter is the purpose of the study and documentary review. The second chapter: the formation of Banping Mountain and the development of its surrounding communities. The third chapter: the geomantic analysis around Banping Mountain, including the common principles of geomantic residence selection and the geomantic analysis for the environment of Banping Mountain. The fourth chapter: the geomantic analysis of surrounding communities. The fifth chapter: conclusion.

Feng Shui from ancient times to today's society has long been of quite far-reaching influence. The merit of applying Feng Shui theory is to enable people to adapt part of the natural environment, to advocate the harmonious coexistence between people and the nature, thus therefore placing particular emphasis on the relationship between humans and the living environment, and the nowadays the application of the green building concept also make use of Feng Shui in the design. In view of the adapting the environment to benefit human health, it is necessary to approach the "green building design" concept in conjunction with the "feng shui which will be the future trend of the architectural design. The objective of this study is to advance research on this aspect of relationship in order to cater for the future market demand. This study was followed by the use of literature analysis, in-depth feng shui interviews, and content analysis, which thus lead to the following detailed studies: 1. Chuan Tang Sha—to build a green wall between the road and the house. 2. Ao Fong Sha—to build a green walls higher than the adjoining Ao Fong Sha Building. 3. Long Hu Sha—to build a pond on the Long Hu Sha location. 4. Tie Wu Sha—to build a pond on the Tie Wu Sha location. 5. Tian Zhan Sha—to build 45degree tilted solar panels on the building envelope. 6. Bi Dao Sha—to build a green wall with the corner facing the Bi Dao Sha location. To enhance interior fortune - the indoor health and environment technology to harmony with structural flat slabs, columns and structural walls, interior layout designis to provide the indoor cultivation such as round leaves of potted evergreen such as: Fluke Tong, evergreen, cycads and to roof planting round leaves, evergreen, and not as a taboo plant landscape green garden. The above seven methodology are the basis of designing feng shui measures to counteract adjoining environmental constraints. Following interview with feng shui experts, it is concluded that the above methodology are useful. The objective is to promote green building technology into the feng shui of the architectural design market.
