Abstract:
Bedroom Feng Shui practices have been criticized as myth over the years but in fact having its scientific origin that is not purely superstitious. This paper aims to examine whether the architects' design practice for bedroom interior arrangement is concurring with the recommended bedroom Feng Shui practices. The study has successfully interviewed 16 architects from diverse backgrounds to avoid bias, seeking their design perspectives in bedroom interior configuration. Subsequently, the interviewees submitted sketches of ideal bedroom layout based on their expertise, with pre-set requirements. Data from semi-structured interviews were analyzed using mixed method approach. In agreement with our expectations, majority of the interviewees have matching thoughts that “bed arrangement” is the primary consideration in bedroom interior configuration. Most of the design outputs were highly attached to favorable Feng Shui conditions. The overall findings implied that bedroom Feng Shui is not merely superstitious but most components are practical design references for architects from diverse backgrounds.

Abstract:
Local wisdom is essential in urban development planning by bringing cultural values. Local wisdom in housing and settlements forms special characteristics both in spatial and social aspects. Chinatown is a form of residential area created by Chinese community groups. Sudiroprajan Chinatown Village is the center of Chinese settlement which is also located in the economic center area of Surakarta City. The method used in this research is qualitative with literature study, observation, description and analysis of settlement character based on physical and non-physical characteristics. Chinatown Village has a linear pattern following the road and is influenced by feng shui in arranging the interior and exterior of housing. Most residents in Sudiroprajan Chinatown Village work in the trade and services sector, namely by opening businesses in house buildings or at Pasar Gede. The temple is also the worship centre for Chinese residents in Chinatown Village. The local wisdom found in Chinatown Village influences other activities, such as the emergence of economic activities and cultural tourism. This shows that local wisdom influences the character and condition of settlements physically and non-physically.

The main goal of this thesis is to explore how interior spaces in hotel designs can provide a less stressful environment and promote health and harmony by using Feng Shui Principles. It will first discuss the principles of Feng Shui and general hotel design, and then move on to demonstrate how the application of Feng Shui principles can be used to create a hotel environment that encourages health and harmony in its occupants. This project will demonstrate principles that not only can be applied to hotel space, but also can be practiced in any other interior space. This thesis, therefore, demonstrates new possibilities for how "care of the self" is delivered and received through design.

Everybody whishes to have his/her own dream house. There are some interior design software that can help us to visualize the results. Through the help of Feng-Shui theory, the best interior design can improve the resident’s health and furtune. However, it is not the case that when the users use all such software takes Feng-Shui into consideration. Moreover, as most people are not familiar with Feng-Shui theory and method, we create an “Automatic Feng-Shui Aware Interior Design System”. In this paper, we propose a system that can create a Feng-Shui aware interior decoration system according to resident’s preference. The user inputs the layout of a house , his/her gender and birth year. Our system divides the house space through user-defined bin unit, to obtain a set of rectangular bins. We choose the best location to place the furniture according to the Feng-Shui rule, where each bin is associated with different Feng-Shui cots. Our system uses a recursive algorithm to find the minimum cost of furniture placement. If a user is not satisfied with the result, he/she can manually modify the location or the direction any furniture. As a result, the user can use our system to create his/she dream house.

The purpose of this study was to explore how practitioners in interior design faced the considerations of Feng-Sui and other taboos of the owners. The method was based on interviews and surveys and targeted practitioners in the interior design industry to select subjects involved in Feng Shui design. This research discussed the issues of commonality by text analysis. The results of the survey found that the following experiences have been included in "Feng Shui Considerations": (1) Basically, most owners who have consulted Feng-Shui specialists tend to listen to those specialists’ advice and advance concern for some Feng Shui points. In addition, if a designer understands the concept of Feng Shui, there will not only be extra points to present to the owner, but it also helps the overall communication between both the designer and owner. Moreover, one of the factors is that some owners are also affected by local customs of Feng-Shui subculture. If the elders in the family have some input, they will adopt a positive attitude and focus on those concerns. (2) There are about 20 Feng-Shui considerations which are often mentioned in the interior design plan, in which some of them are rooted in traditional folk beliefs, such as door to door or bedside/bed tail aiming toward a window, and others that hold in awe and veneration to the bond of humanity and life/death. In addition, other considerations such as dealing with a hall, the opposite sides of stoves and refrigerators, etc., can be used to try to figure out the truth through the actual experience in life. The others are kind of " a puzzling Feng-Shui consideration", such as the kitchen floor is high, the bed must be slept in such a way as female left and man right...etc., thus generating a more unconventional and empty statement. In this regard, it can only be said that this is the esoteric concept of “Blessed is a land inhabited by people who do good."

This thesis is aimed to discuss the significantly intimate relationships between Feng-Shui and architecture as well as Feng-Shui and interior design. In addition, theories concerning triple-saver door are also used to discuss its tremendous impact of Feng-Shui on interior design. So far as the Chinese are concerned, Feng-Shui is a set of professional theories with a long history, originating from our ancestors that make close and subtle observations on the geographic environment, inclusive of mountains, hills, lands, lakes, seasonal variations, and the like. Our ancestors eventually discover that significantly intimate relationships do exist between the natural environment, human beings and other creatures alike. Moreover, they also make significant discoveries that human beings are able to proliferate in an advantageous way by finding out appropriate environmental spaces as well as sites or locations. In this light, Feng-Shui is also called “Skills to observe lands,” meaning using various ways to observe geographical variations and predicting natural phenomena and , as a result, meant as scientific methods and practical principles to select palaces, temples, villages and graveyards. In brief, Feng-Shui is a kind of scientific knowledge to select appropriate sites or locations for particular reasons; to put it differently, Feng-Shui is essentially and basically a method to discover environmental and geographical traits for particular sites and purposes. On account of the rapid development and advancement of broadcasting technology, such concepts regarding Feng-Shiu have been gradually accepted as pressure beams, door red, road red, wall knife, evil hallway, door to door, rooms of rooms, stairs confronting doors and doors confronting kitchens. The above concepts are basic notions of Feng-Shui and thus have exerted a tremendous and indispensable influence on residential spaces or sites of human beings. By interviewing Kongzhao Min, who possesses valuable experiences and reliable practices of almost five hundred cases of Feng-Shui, significant findings are made as follows: behavior modes of mankind and his / her living qualities are intimately connected with environmental spaces of residency, including interior surroundings and exterior ones. In this regard, Feng-Shui is briefly defined as environmental spaces concretely embodied with human choices of residency. This thesis starts with studying and exploring ancient books with respect to the origin of Feng-Shui, its shapes of theories, its professional publications and finally professional realizations of Feng-Shui practices in selecting residency. Significant observations are made that Feng-Shui is identical with the environmental spaces, and vice versa. Furthermore, the definitions of modern environmental spaces and those of Guo Pu’s described in detail in his books are surprisingly identical. Chi or air scatters as winds rise and stops as waters gather. Our ancestors try hard to gather Chi and live in harmony with it, which is called Feng-Shui afterwards. Vapor from the atmospherical humidity and rain is sufficiently accumulated in soils, which evaporates and subsequently releases water. Breezes blow the vapor high up and take it down into ponds, rivers, seas, and oceans. The vapor rising from soils meet with vapor in the air, evaporate in the winds and then stop by the water side, which is not merely a natural phenomenon but also a concrete practice of Feng-Shui. In order to concretely demonstrate Feng-Shui practices, Feng-Shui should be discussed in the framework of the natural environment. Taboos with regard to Feng-Shui should also be based on the environmental structure. With the prevailing notions and practices of Feng-Shui, the living residency of human beings are apparently in harmony with the environmental spaces. Currently, poor or inappropriate interior designs decrease in numbers. However, one problem is still worth note; that is to say, complaints about one’s living residency or spaces derive not from poor interior designs but from confronting against the environmental spaces. In real cases of practicing Feng-Shui, some people living in identical interior designs suffer from different but severe problems of illness and emotions. The reason is that the environmental spaces and qualities they reside in are wholly poor and don’t correspond to proper human residency. Feng-Shui is not merely a knowledge of science or an art of spatial exploration; it is also an environmental ecology of mankind. Human beings are enormously affected by Feng-Shui. Feng-Shui, therefore, is essentially an art pursuing and practicing harmony between mankind and the natural environment.

Due to the influence of Fengshui, in China, you may see that people’s residential concepts of residential Feng-Shui in mega-environmental landscapes, urban, rural, traditional ancient houses, and modern residences that reflect every principles of details. With the influence of every aspects of factors like natural environments, society, economy, and population increase-or-decrease, the residential status and constructional status would alter. With the population increase-or-decrease and demand, peoples’ living scope has expanded from single-story buildings to skyscrapers, and from space status to vertical ones. In light of the fact that single-family houses are in which the majority of people dwell, which is scarcely studied, this study would be based on whether traditional principles of Yangzhai Fengshui could be applied in the modern single-family houses, as well as inferring what the key relation among the alternations of the influences vertical spaces could be through Feng-Shui Principles. This study is processed through literature organization and data analysis, from the theory of “zhai exterior modeling” and “zhai interior modeling” of the book “Yangzhai Shishu”. All the operational norms of yangzhai fengshui and taboo decorations are constructed into principals through case-analysis and inductions. The relationship between interfaces and combination of Fengshui and interior planes is discussed so that we may understand the relationships and meanings between decoration principles of interior space and vertical dimension, about fengshui. After analyzing the six structures of influential factors of yangzhai fengshui , like (a) surrounding topography (b) surrounding roads (c) environments which cause bad fortunes: zhai interior modeling (d) spatial combinations (e) spatial patterns (f) route directions, as well as related cases, the most common problems of single-family houses include (a) surrounding topography, (d) spatial combinations, and (e) spatial patterns, about Feng-Shui. All the spaces in the entrance door, the hall, the living room, the bedroom, and the kitchen are on the basis of “azure dragon on the left and white tiger on the right. The spaces of kitchen and washroom are dependent on where the vertical relative positions of stoves and septic tanks are. According to these case-analysis, the ancient-and-modern relations of vertical part of single-family houses, such as the water tower, show the significance of how to vertically place one tower in addition to the different use of utensils. Besides, compared to the traditional houses, although modern single-family houses show differently in constructional patterns from the appearances of fengshui setups, the conceptions of judging setups that cause bad fortunes from interior and exterior environments still remain the same. Therefore, we may change the exterior and interior decorations of single-family houses, and alter the house environments in different appearances depending on the different patterns that cause bad fortunes.

This study focuses on the view of body and the view of body traditional Chinese culture applied to interior design based on Feng-shui consideration. It is clear that the view of body is applied to the interior layout of housing even the modern time. Firstly, this thesis discusses and summaries the thought of breathe, namely, Chi, and context of human being. Secondly, this study explores how the thought of human body applies to the knowledge of environment. This study finds that our environmental elements are recognized as thought of Feng-shui; such as Yinyang, Wuxing, etc. The ideology and the view of body have been obviously applied to Taiwan’s traditional architecture, and furthermore applied to interior layout of housing. According to the literature review and the analysis of some interior layouts of housing, this study concludes the view of body is clear to be applied to modern architecture. One of examples is the sacred space become the core of the interior layout in order to protect the house. The sacred space is referred to the head, and the other parts of human being are also recognized. Finally, this study summaries the view of body is not only applied to the traditional houses, but also applied the interior layout of contemporary housing.

As the computer and information technology advance, digital media is changing the teaching and practices of design education. A number of studies suggested that the rise of computer media, the development of computer aided design system results in a great impact to the design process, while computers are even applied in the concept development in early design. In view of the availability of mobile carriers in recent years, the study proposes the development of an E-Book about the issue on Feng Shui for House Geomancy (Yang Zhai) through reading the mobile carriers, in order to learn how to apply the issues into design behaviors and to carry out experiment under the concept of mobile learning. The data required is attained from the test and questionnaires to help us understand the learning effectiveness. Paul Kim from Stanford University proposed the so-called “massive pedagogical paradigm shift,” whereas learners are empowered to create educational content and to learn critical-thinking skills from the process. The study designs an E-Book on basic Feng Shui Design that includes the directions, appearance, layout, furniture position, colors, decoration, and how to properly allocate in the best interests of the dwellers. The learners are introduced with new learning patterns through the platform of E-Books, such as learning the spatial allocation through media forms, simulating the Feng Shui constituted by different spaces, thereby encouraging the learners with positive and intrinsic learning through self-guided approaches.

Abstract:
Feng shui is an ancient Chinese subject that has been adopted by many architects and interior designers. However, the jury is still out on whether feng shui is a legacy of traditional experience or a design guideline that can be scientifically measured. There are a few studies that discuss the use of feng shui in indoor and outdoor decoration, but for its impact on the human body's psychological perception and physical comfort are still rarely to be discussed. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate whether the living room decorated under different feng shui conditions will affect the physiological reaction and psychological feeling of the human body. This study created a virtual experimental scene, made the participants wear VR glasses, measured their physiological value of HRV simultaneously, and conducted semi-structured interviews after completing the POMS psychological measuring table. The results showed that: (1) The results of heart rate variability showed that the living room with better feng shui conditions could provide more stable physiological data for the subjects and make them feel comfortable and stable. However, the pattern with poor feng shui conditions reflects the unstable physiological data of the subjects, which makes people feel anxious and uneasy. (2) The results of the emotion measuring table showed that the living room with better feng shui conditions could provide the subjects with a more pleasant mental state, while the living room with poor feng shui conditions reflected the subjects' less pleasant mental state. (3) In the semi-structured interview, the subjects reported that they would judge their own needs in life and allocate the living room, and would not completely follow the principles of feng shui. The results showed that interior spaces with feng shui in mind generated more positive emotions, while also being perceived as a more comfortable environment.
