Il finocchio marino (Crithmum maritimum L.) è un’erba spontanea alofita facoltativa, caratterizzata dalla presenza di numerosi composti bioattivi, ampiamente diffusa nei paesi del Mediterraneo, il cui consumo è fortemente legato alla tradizione culinaria della regione Marche. Il progetto di questa tesi di dottorato è stato finalizzato alla valorizzazione di finocchio marino biologico coltivato nell’area del Parco del Conero, per la produzione di conserve, salse e spezie dall’elevato valore nutrizionale.
Il finocchio marino fresco è stato sottoposto a uno studio fitochimico per identificare nuovi composti con potenziale attività farmacologica. Successivamente, è stato impiegato, da solo o mescolato con olive verdi, per la produzione di conserve fermentate in salamoia, con l'inoculo di uno starter selezionato. Mentre, le dinamiche microbiche che si verificano nel corso di una fermentazione spontanea sono state studiate nel kimchi. Il finocchio marino è stato valutato come veicolo per la somministrazione di batteri probiotici, inoculando Lactiplantibacillus plantarum IMC 509 e SYNBIO® in una conserva acidificata a base di finocchio marino e valutandone la vitalità durante una conservazione refrigerata. Sono state inoltre prodotte due salse a base di finocchio marino e sono state sottoposte a test di shelf-life accelerata e microbial challenge test, per valutare la stabilità microbiologica delle salse e il rischio microbiologico associato alla potenziale sopravvivenza o crescita di Staphylococcus aureus e Bacillus cereus, dopo l'applicazione di pastorizzazioni convenzionali o blande, rispettivamente. Infine, sono stati valutati quattro differenti metodi di essiccazione per la produzione di spezie essiccate.
I risultati complessivamente ottenuti hanno confermato le grandi potenzialità del finocchio marino per la produzione di conserve, salse e spezie dall’elevato valore nutrizionale legate al territorio, con potenziali ricadute positive sul settore produttivo.<br>Sea fennel (Crithmum maritimum L.) is a facultative halophyte wild herb, characterized by the presence of several bioactive compounds, widely diffused in Mediterranean countries, whose consumption is strongly linked to the culinary tradition of the Marche region. This Ph.D. thesis project was aimed at the exploitation of organic sea fennel cultivated in the Conero Natural Park area, for the production of high nutritional value preserves, sauces and spices.
Fresh sea fennel was subjected to a phytochemical study to identify new compounds with potential pharmacological activity. Subsequently, sea fennel sprouts, either alone or mixed with green olives, were exploited for the production of fermented preserves in brine, with the inoculation of a selected starter. Whereas, the microbial dynamics occurring during a spontaneous fermentation were studied in kimchi. Sea fennel was evaluated as a carrier for probiotic bacteria delivery, inoculating Lactiplantibacillus plantarum IMC 509 and SYNBIO® in an acidified sea fennel-based preserve and assessing their viability during a refrigerated storage. Furthermore, two sea fennel-based sauces were produced and have been subjected to accelerated shelf-life and microbial challenge tests to evaluate the microbial stability of the sauces and the microbial risk associated with the potential survival or growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus, after the application of conventional or mild pasteurizations, respectively. Finally, four different drying methods for the production of dried spices were evaluated.
The overall collected results confirmed the great potential of sea fennel for the production of high nutritional value preserves, sauces and spices linked to the territory, with potential impact on the manufacturing sector.

l finocchio (Foeniculum vulgare Mill. subsp. vulgare var. azoricum) è uno dei più importanti vegetali consumati in Italia, ed è comunemente consumato crudo, in insalata, o dopo cottura. Il finocchio è apprezzato principalmente per le sue qualità organolettiche, per l’aroma di anice, la sua dolcezza, ma anche per la croccantezza. Tuttavia, l’alta percentuale di scarto, unita alla complessità e al dispendio di tempo impiegato per le operazioni di mondatura, scoraggiano il consumatore nell’acquisto. Il consumatore medio infatti, al giorno d’oggi, ha poco tempo da impiegare per la preparazione dei pasti ma, contemporaneamente, è molto più consapevole del valore nutrizionale del cibo che mangia. Fatte queste considerazioni il finocchio è un prodotto estremamente appetibile per l’industria della IV gamma, a maggior ragione considerando che al momento il finocchio tagliato non è disponibile sul mercato dei prodotti fresh-cut. La perdita qualitativa, e dunque commerciale, dei finocchi di IV gamma è legata principalmente ai fenomeni di imbrunimento che interessano la zona di taglio, in particolare nella regione del fusto. Pertanto, al fine di rimuovere i vincoli tecnologici che impediscono la sua disponibilità come prodotto di IV gamma, è necessario un approccio integrato prendendo in considerazione l'intera catena di produzione, dalla materia prima alla lavorazione al confezionamento, al fine di affrontare tutti gli aspetti critici per questo tipo di produzione. La selezione della materia prima è di fondamentale importanza per la qualità del prodotto finale: in particolate, la maturità alla raccolta è un aspetto importante che influenza non solo la vita commerciale, ma rappresenta un fattore critico anche per la qualità del prodotto di IV gamma. Sebbene i finocchi vengano
di solito raccolti secondo la domanda del mercato, lo stadio di maturità fisiologica al momento della raccolta ha un impatto sulla vita post-raccolta, influenzando anche le fasi di trasporto e di commercializzazione. Una parte di questo lavoro mostra come la raccolta allo stadio di maturità commerciale permette di avere un prodotto con un più elevato contenuto in solidi solubili totali e composti ad azione antiossidante. Inoltre è stato messo in evidenza come la maturità del finocchio alla raccolta influenza la qualità visiva dei finocchi di IV gamma durante la conservazione. Inoltre, sui finocchi raccolti a diversi stadi di maturazione sono state valutate le caratteristiche qualitative utilizzano un metodo di analisi non distruttivo che ha permesso di ottenere dei modelli per la predizione di alcuni parametri chimici del finocchio. Considerando che una delle maggiori cause di perdita di qualità e quindi di commerciabilità del finocchio di IV gamma è legato all’imbrunimento della regione di taglio, uno degli obiettivi di questo lavoro è stato quello di trovare il pre-trattamento antimbrunente più efficace per evitare o ridurre i fenomeni di ossidazione delle fette di finocchio durante la conservazione. Quindi lo scopo del lavoro è stato quello di investigare gli effetti di diversi trattamenti anti-imbrunenti sulle caratteristiche qualitative dei finocchi di IV gamma. Dai risultati è emerso che il trattamento con etanolo (0,5%), tra quelli testati, era quello migliore, perché capace di mantenere dei bassi livelli di imbrunimento nelle zone di taglio delle fette di finocchio, consentendone la commercializzazione fino a 6 giorni di conservazione a 5 °C. La commerciabilità dei prodotti di IV gamma può essere ulteriormente estesa mediante la modificazione della composizione gassosa usata durante la conservazione, generalmente abbassando l’’ossigeno e incrementando la
concentrazione di CO2. L’uso di atmosfera modificata apporta dei benefici ai prodotti di IV gamma, riducendo l’attività respiratoria, ritardando la crescita microbica e inibendo fenomeni quali l’imbrunimento. Perciò è stato condotto uno studio per identificare le atmosfere gassose ottimali per estendere la vita commerciale dei finocchio di IV gamma. Sono state testate diverse concentrazioni di ossigeno e anidride carbonica e sono stati valutati i potenziali effetti benefici o negativi sui parametri qualitativi delle fette di finocchio durante la frigoconservazione. I risultati hanno mostrato che conservando i finocchi di IV gamma in atmosfera controllata di 2-5 kPa O2 + 20 kPa CO2 è possibile ritardare l’imbrunimento delle fette di finocchio, mantenendo la commerciabilità per 9 giorni a 5 °C. Sulla base di questi risultati, sono stati condotti ulteriori studi finalizzati ad ottimizzare il confezionamento dei finocchi di IV gamma. In questi esperimenti sono stati testati tre diversi tipi di film plastici in combinazione con diverse miscele gassose al fine di individuare la combinazione migliore che consentisse di estendere la vita commerciale delle fette di finocchio. L’uso del film PP+PA microforato ed una concentrazione iniziale di gas all’interno delle confezioni di 5 O2 kPa and 20 CO2 kPa sono risultate le condizioni migliori per conservare la qualità dei finocchi di IV gamma frigoconservati a 5 °C per 13 giorni. Inoltre è stato utilizzato un approccio statistico multivariato (MALST) che, basandosi sui dati ottenuti durante la conservazione del finocchio di IV gamma nelle condizioni ottimali, ha permesso di predire una vita commerciale di 24 giorni a 5 °C. Tutti i risultati ottenuti nel presenta lavoro di tesi hanno contribuito ad approfondire le conoscenze riguardo le
pratiche postraccolta del finocchio, consentendo inoltre di ottenere informazioni utili ad incrementare la vita commerciale del finocchio sia fresco che tagliato.

Projeto de Pós-Graduação/Dissertação apresentado à Universidade Fernando Pessoa como parte dos requisitos para obtenção do grau de Mestre em Ciências Farmacêuticas<br>Nos últimos anos a procura e utilização das ervas aromáticas e especiarias, não somente para uso culinário mas também, como forma de tratamento e prevenção de doenças torna-se cada vez mais evidente. Parecem ter menos efeitos adversos que alguns medicamentos e é uma terapia alternativa muito adotada.
A composição química de algumas plantas medicinais como o gengibre, o alho e o funcho, apresenta efeitos terapêuticos benéficos para o combate de uma panóplia de patologias e estados de saúde desde há milhares de anos. Porém, como em todos produtos fitoterapêuticos e farmacológicos, também existem efeitos adversos, dai que seja necessário o seu uso racional quando utilizados como adjuvantes terapêuticos.
Neste trabalho foi feita uma revisão bibliográfica acerca das principais caraterísticas de cada uma das especiarias e ervas aromáticas acima referidas no que toca à sua origem botânica, composição química, partes das plantas mais utilizadas e ainda produtos alimentícios e medicamentosos onde podem ser encontradas.
As precauções e contraindicações que devem ser respeitadas também são descritas igualmente ao longo deste trabalho científico, dando especial ênfase aos efeitos benéficos e adversos que cada uma das plantas pode desencadear na saúde dos indivíduos. The last few years have demonstrated that the search and use of herbs and spices not only for domestic affairs but also as a way of prevention and treatment of several diseases becomes more visible, as they possess less side effects than some of the drugs available in the market, becoming now the most used alternative therapy for users.
The chemical composition of some plants such as ginger, garlic and fennel allow the users several beneficial effects in the control and set-to of panoply of pathologies and health state for thousands of years. However, as all the others phytotherapeutical and pharmacological products, they entail positive and negative effects, which reinforces the importance of highlighting these for the rational use of the mentioned plants as therapeutic adjuvant.
In this thesis a bibliographic revision has been made related to the main characteristics of each one of the spices and herbs mentioned above regarding their botanic origin, chemical composition, most used parts of the plants and also alimentary products and drugs where they can be found.
The precautions and contraindications, which must be respected, are likewise equally described along this scientific work, with a special emphasis to the beneficial and side effects that these plants can arouse, in general, in every living being’s health.

antiquity because of its antimicrobial, analgesic, antiinflammatory, antispasmodic and
anxiolytic properties. It is also widely used in the food and cosmetics industries. The
objective of the present study was to investigate the chronic preclinical toxicity of the
lyophilized crude hydroalcoholic extract (LCHAE) of the fruit of F. vulgare
commercialized in sachet form in order to demonstrate the safety of its use by the
population, based on Resolution 90/2004 of the Brazilian Regulatory Authorities. In
this study, Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus albinus) were treated orally with 8.5, 25.5
and 76.5 mg/kg of LCHAE for 13 weeks (n=10 per dose and sex). General signs of
toxicity, lethality and food and water consumption were evaluated daily, while weight
was evaluated weekly and body temperature, glucose levels and behavioral
parameters using open-field and rota-rod tests were assessed every two weeks. At
the end of treatment, 50% of the animals in each group were sacrificed for blood
analysis and 30% were submitted to histopathology. The remaining animals then
formed the satellite group that remained under observation for 21 days following
treatment to evaluate the reversal and/or appearance of possible toxic effects. During
the 13 weeks of treatment, no signs of toxicity were noted and none of the animals
died. In the females, there was a reduction in weight and food consumption and an
increase in water intake. LCHAE reduced the time both males and females spent on
the rotating bar, and reduced ambulation in the females and defecation and rearing in
both sexes. In both males and females, a hypoglycemic effect occurred and there
was an increase in aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alkaline phosphatase
(ALP), as well as a reduction in platelet count. In the females, there was an increase
in alanine transaminase (ALT), leukocytes and neutrophils and a decrease in
cholesterol. In the males, a reduction in lymphocytes occurred and there was an
increase in monocytes. Histopathology revealed signs of hepatotoxicity including
mild portal inflammation with the presence of mononuclear exudate, hepatic lobular
necrosis associated with lymphocytic/histiocytic infiltration and mild sinusoidal
inflammation. In addition, there were signs of toxicity in the lungs: focal pneumonitis
with alveolar septal thickening consisting of mononuclear exudate. In the satellite
groups, the majority of the biochemical, hematological and histopathological
alterations in the liver were found to persist, suggesting irreversibility. Further studies
should be developed to confirm these findings; nevertheless, these results indicate
that LCHAE is toxic particularly to the liver and lungs, in both sexes and at the three
doses used.<br>Foeniculum vulgare Mill. é uma planta usada pelos humanos desde a antiguidade,
devido às suas atividades antimicrobiana, analgésica, anti-inflamatória,
antiespasmódica e ansiolítica, além de ser uma espécie utilizada na indústria de
alimentos e cosméticos. O presente trabalho objetivou investigar a toxicidade préclínica
crônica do extrato hidroalcoólico bruto liofilizado do fruto de F. vulgare
(saches), na perspectiva de avaliar a segurança de seu uso pela população, com
base na Resolução nº 90/2004 da Agência Nacional de Vigilância Sanitária e
algumas modificações. Neste estudo, ratos Wistar (Rattus norvegicus albinus) foram
tratados por via oral (v.o.) com as doses 8,5; 25,5 e 76,5 mg/kg do EHABL durante
13 semanas (n=10 por dose e sexo). Foram avaliados diariamente sinais gerais de
toxicidade, letalidade, consumo de alimentos e água; semanalmente, variação da
evolução ponderal; e, quinzenalmente, temperatura corporal, glicemia e parâmetros
comportamentais através dos testes de campo aberto e da barra giratória. Ao final
do tratamento, 50 % dos animais de cada grupo foram sacrificados para análises
sanguíneas, dos quais 30 % passaram por investigação histopatológica. O restante
dos animais passou a fazer parte do grupo satélite, os quais permaneceram em
observação 21 dias após o tratamento, para a verificação da reversão e/ou
aparecimento de possíveis efeitos tóxicos. Na triagem farmacológica
comportamental, não se observaram características de toxicidade e mortes durante
as 13 semanas de tratamento. Em fêmeas, houve uma diminuição no peso corpóreo
e no consumo de alimentos, com um aumento no consumo de água. O EHABL
reduziu o tempo de permanência na barra giratória em ambos os sexos; diminuiu a
ambulação em fêmeas; e reduziu os parâmetros defecação e levantar em ambos os
sexos. Em machos e fêmeas, houve um efeito hipoglicemiante, aumento da
aspartato aminotransferase (AST) e fosfatase alcalina (FAL), com redução das
plaquetas. Em fêmeas, ocorreu um aumento da alanina aminotransferase (ALT),
leucócitos, neutrófilos e diminuição do colesterol. Nos machos, ocorreu diminuição
do número de linfócitos e aumento do número de monócitos. A análise
histopatológica mostrou indícios de hepatotoxicidade, como portite discreta com a
presença de exsudação mononuclear, necrose lobular hepática associada a afluxo
linfoistiocitário e inflamação sinusoidal discreta. Adicionalmente, o pulmão
apresentou sinais de toxicidade: pneumonite focal com espessamento de septo
alveolar por exsudação mononuclear. Nos grupos satélites, observou-se que a
maioria das alterações bioquímicas, hematológicas e histopatológicas, no fígado,
persistiram, mostrando a necessidade de maiores investigações. Portanto, de
acordo com os resultados obtidos, o EHABL apresentou uma toxicidade significativa,
especialmente no fígado e pulmão, em ambos os sexos e nas três doses utilizadas.

Spices are of great importance in the indigenous culinary and traditional medicine systems of the people of Nkonkobe Municipality of the Eastern Cape, South Africa. The present investigation evaluated the ethnopharmacological potentials of two indigenous South African spices- Foeniculum vulgare and Lippia javanica. The pharmacological investigations on these two plant species include ultra-morphology, nutrient and mineral analysis, evaluation of the essential oil, phytochemical and antioxidant assays, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory as well as anti-urolithiatic assay of the acetone and aqueous extracts of the two plants. The species were selected for study as the most cited plants after an ethnobotanical survey conducted on the indigenous knowledge of plants used as spices and medicine in Nkonkobe Municipality, Eastern Cape of South Africa. Among the plants cited Foeniculum vulgare(Apiaceae) and Lippia javanica (Verbenaceae) stood out as the most commonly used spices. Others were members of the families; Solanaceae, Apiaceae, Amaryllidaceae, Amaranthaceae and Lamiaceae. Ultra-morphological studies conducted on the leaves of the two selected plants using scanning electron microscope revealed the presence of non-glandular and glandular trichomes, stomata and crystals. The leaf surfaces of these herbs may serve as secretory sites where aromatic secondary metabolites are produced. Analyses of the proximate, mineral, vitamin and anti-nutrients contents of these two spices showed that both species are good sources of these phytochemicals and may be used to enrich the human diet. Lippia javanica possesses lower lipid (0.50 percent), fibre (5 percent) and carbohydrate (64.96 percent) contents than Foeniculum vulgare. On the other hand, protein (20.54 percent), ash (11.60 percent) and moisture content (11.69 percent) were higher in Foeniculum vulgare than in Lippia javanica. Foeniculum vulgare showed higher N (3286 mg/100g), Mg (386.7 mg/100g), K (3187 mg/100g) and Na (1383 mg/100g) content while Lippia javanica was higher in Ca (1833 mg/100g), Zn (4.7 mg/100g), Cu (0.9 mg/100g) and Fe (78.4 mg/100g). Vitamins Aand E were also higher in Lippia javanica (1.31 mg/100g; 2.52 mg/100g) while Foeniculum vulgare (0.45 mg/100g) had higher vitamin C content. No significant differences were observed in the phytate, oxalate and tannin contents of the two spices, but saponin and cyanide were significantly lower in Lippia javanica (268.5 mg/100g; 8.45 mg/100g) than in Foeniculum vulgare (1855 mg/100g; 10.5 mg/100g) Evaluation of the essential oil component, cytotoxicity and antimicrobial activities of both fresh and dried leaves of Lippia javanica and Foeniculum vulgare revealed that the dried samples yielded more oil and also contain more chemical than the fresh samples of both plants. The overall antimicrobial activity evaluated using susceptibility and microdilution assays revealed that the oils of F. vulgare and L. javanica exhibited high antifungal and antibacterial activity, compared to the reference drugs. In addition, essential oil from fresh leaves of both spices was less toxic compared to the oil from the dried leaves. Polyphenolic evaluation of the aqueous and acetone extracts of the plants revealed that the acetone extract had higher phenol, flavanol, flavonoid and proanthocyanidin contents than the aqueous extracts. The total phenolic content of acetone and aqueous extracts were 4.49 ± 0.411 mg/g and 3.73 ± 0.498 mg/g tannic acid equivalent (TAE) respectively for Lippia javanica. The same trend was also observed in Foeniculum vulgare with total phenolic content of acetone and aqueous extracts were 4.22 ± 0.325 mg/g and 4.17 ± 0.651 mg/g tannic acid equivalent (TAE) respectively. Further assessment of the antioxidant activity of the solvent extracts revealed that both plants exhibited promising free radical scavenging potentials against 1,1 diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2, 2’-azino-bis(3- ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS), reducing power, lipid peroxidation, nitric oxide, phosphomolybdate and hydrogen peroxide. Antimicrobial activities of the acetone and aqueous extracts of the two plants revealed moderate antibacterial and antifungal activities. They inhibited the growth of Microsporium canis and Trichophyton rubrum that were not susceptible to the standard antifungal drug used as control.

Engineers have researched the use of the electric fence as a communication medium and new technologies based on transmission line theory are used at present to monitor and troubleshoot problems occurring in electric fences. The next stage of the development is to use wireless devices to accomplish those same tasks from remote locations. This project aims to develop a prototype that provides a wireless link between an electric fence and a personal computer in a remote location. This prototype is expected to prove concepts that lead to the future design of useful, marketable products. The project was supported by Gallagher Electronics and is implemented using their existing products where possible.

Työssäni esitellään elämänkaarisijoittamista yhtenä merkittävistä pitkän aikavälin sijoitusstrategioista sekä tutkitaan asiakasdatan avulla millaisiin sijoituskohteisiin Henki-Fennian olemassa olevat eläkevakuutusasiakkaat ovat säästönsä allokoineet. Elämänkaarisijoittamisen ajatuksen mukaan työssäkäyvän olisi järkevää säästää osa tuloistaan ja näin ollen varautua ennalta eläköitymisen aiheuttamaan tulotason alenemiseen. Elämänkaarisijoittamisen sijoitusfilosofiaa tullaan tarkastelemaan perinteisen taloustieteellisen lähestymistavan lisäksi myös sijoittajakäyttäytymisen perspektiivistä.
Työn tavoitteena oli tutkia, miten Henki-Fennian eläkevakuutusasiakaskannan portfoliot ovat eri-ikäisillä rakentuneet, miten niitä voitaisiin jatkossa hoitaa tehokkaammin ja olisiko esim. elämänkaarirahastojen käyttöönotolle Henki-Fennialla tarvetta.
Aineisto jaettiin viiteen ikäryhmään ja lisäksi kunkin portfolion riskisyys määriteltiin viiteen eri riskiluokkaan. Iän ja riskisijoitusten yhteyttä tarkastellaan lineaarisella regressioanalyysilla ja yksisuuntaisella anova-analyysilla. Riskinoton oletettiin laskevan lineaarisesti sijoittajan iän kasvaessa. Lineaarisella regressioanalyysilla tehty tarkastelu kuitenkin osoitti, että riskinotto ei laskenut lineaarisesti iän kasvaessa. Kun sijoittajien riskinottoa tarkasteltiin ANOVA-analyysilla ikäryhmittäin, huomattiin, että nuorimmat, eli 20–29-vuotiaat ottavat portfoliossaan kaikista ikäluokista vähiten riskiä (keskiarvo 3,30). Salkussaan merkittävimmin riskiä ottava luokka sen sijaan oli ikäluokka 40–49-vuotiaat (keskiarvo 3,82). Riskinottohalu taas kuitenkin laskee selvästi eläkeiän lähestyessä, sillä vanhin ikäluokka oli aineistossa riskinottohalultaan maltillisempi (keskiarvo 3,35). Näiden vanhempien ikäluokkien välillä ilmenevä ero riskiottohalussa siis kuitenkin puoltaa portfolioteoriaa.
Kaiken kaikkiaan tulosten mukaan näyttää siltä, että sijoitusten riski on huipussaan 40–49-vuotiailla ja matalin nuorimmilla ja vanhimmilla ikäluokilla. Tutkimuksen valossa näyttäisi siltä, että Henki-Fennian kannattaisi ottaa käyttöön elämänkaarirahastot ja tarjota niitä vaivattomana ja turvallisena vaihtoehtona erityisesti nuorille asiakkaille.

The aim of this thesis has been to develop a proposition for a new type of snail barrier, whose function is not based on the use of toxic chemicals or electric current. We have mainly used Fredy Olsson´s methods described in the compendium "Princip- och primärkonstruktion" After a thorough review of previous research and the accompanying definition of criteria, we sketched out six different propositions. By weighting the criteria in a Kesselring matrix, we selected one of the proposals for further development. The main criteria we had to take into account were; the weight of the product, the ability to recycle the material, the price and that it would be modular. The work has resulted in the development of a product that meets all the criteria, and is ready for manufacturing, though field conditions tests that can confirm the effectiveness remains to be done.

As a first-generation Georgian to be born the year after Soviet Union collapsed, I carry the weight of the uncertainty and the shared memory of the years before my birth that is engraved in the minds of the people around me. Through the years of chaos that had to come later, I always thought that me and my country grew up and matured together, as the peers of same age. Transition from a strictly Atheistic society into predominantly fundamental Orthodox Christian nation has been the process that I witnessed while growing up. Being raised by an Orthodox iconographer father, working on frescoes and icons have left the permanent mark on my identity as an artist.
My work, through the range of media, deals with this clash of radical ideologies, while drawing from Orthodox iconography and compositions, I transport the images into a neutral, sterile state where they are re-examined and re-evaluated. Even though my work deals with social issues in Georgia, I see most of it as an autobiographical narrative that addresses the local space that I come from.

Living the vast majority of my life in an area that celebrates diversity but thrives because of illegal cross-border activities (undocumented workers, drug imports) at times the distance between the United States and Mexico is in fact as thin as the width of a fence. Though it is typical for a filmmaker to hope to present a unique take on a subject, given how I have seen the topics of immigration and the perspective of the purpose of homeland security portray, I am confident that there is an opportunity to show these issues in a more personal, less aggressive light with the use of first person accounts instead of a dependence on the most violent aspects of these topics. The main subject will give character to this agency by blurring the lines of his life as an agent and as a citizen.

The walls or fences referred to in the poem represent more than just physical barriers separating adjacent premises; the speaker sees them as representing obstacles to communication and friendship between individuals. Seen from the perspective of the speaker, a fence or wall is a "bad" thing. But the speaker is but one of the parties to the neighbourly relationship. For the speaker's neighbour, a wall or a fence is "a protector of privacy" (Watson "Frost's Wall : The View from the Other Side" 1971 44 The New England Quarterly 653 655). Thus there are two views on walls or fences: they can be seen negatively as obstructing good relations, or positively as dividers that secure good relations between neighbours by separating them and protecting their privacy rights.

Contexte : La greffe osseuse alvéolaire est désormais considérée comme une étape clé du traitement chirurgical des fentes labio-palatines. La particularité de cette greffe réside dans sa géométrie particulière car l’os spongieux est alors placé entre deux surfaces corticales. Méthodes : L’objectif de cette recherche est d’abord d’obtenir, à l’aide d’une revue de la littérature, une meilleure compréhension de l’histoire de la greffe, des matériaux utilisés et des facteurs influençant son résultat. Ce travail se porte ensuite sur le développement d’un modèle permettant de simuler les résultats de la greffe en fonction de l’influence de différents paramètres, en particulier l’effet du compactage mécanique sur la greffe osseuse. Les caractéristiques de la greffe sont observées en fonction de la magnitude de la force appliquée (0 à 50 N). L’os spongieux fémoral et iliaque est utilisé. Une analyse par microscanner et des cultures de CFU-F sont effectuées. Résultats : Le micro-scanner permet une caractérisation précise de la structure du greffon en fonction de la force de compaction appliquée 0, 5, 20 et 50N. Le nombre de CFU-F (Colony Forming Units-Fibroblats) révèle que l’application d’une force de compaction a un impact positif sur la prolifération cellulaire. Conclusion : Cette recherche tend à mieux comprendre le remodelage osseux influencé par les forces de compaction dans le cas particulier de la fente alvéolaire, l'objectif ultime étant de guider le chirurgien vers un résultat optimisé<br>Background and purpose: Alveolar cleft bone grafting is now widely accepted as one step of cleft surgical treatment. The peculiarity of this graft stands in its particular geometry: bone is placed in between two cortical surfaces. Methods: The objective of this research is first to get, trough literature, a better comprehension of graft history, graft materials and influencing factors of bone graft integration. Then this work aims to develop a model to simulate graft results according to the influence of different parameters, especially the effect of mechanical compaction on bone graft. Graft features are observed relying on magnitude of the applied force (0 to 50N). Cancellous human femoral and iliac bones are used. Micro-CT scanning and CFUs culture are performed. Results: Micro-CT scan gives a precise characterization of the structure of the graft depending of the applied compaction forces 0, 5, 20 and 50N. The number of CFUs (Colony Forming Units) shows a positive impact of compaction force on mesenchymal stem cells proliferation. Conclusion: This research tends to better understand the bone remodeling influenced by compaction forces in the alveolar cleft particular environment, with the ultimate objective to guide the surgical procedure

This project attempts to tie together different threads of my experience. It begins with the memory of looking through the garden fence and hedge of my childhood and considers the simultaneously separate and enmeshed lives of my immediate family and those outside of it. In this project I have engaged with the garden as a point of connection, a means by which to consider the possibility of more Edenic, sustainable futures rooted in concepts of care. An investigation into care, through my making, has been central to my research. Under the harsh structures of apartheid, the natural world carried on in spite of the social and environmental restrictions implemented by the apartheid government. I am interested primarily in human experiences of care, belonging and relationship against the backdrop of migrancy, the displacement of discarded people to infertile land, and the loss of indigenous cultures and natural areas. My intention in this work is for the viewer to be reminded of the unending cycles of nature - seasons, joy, nurturance and recurrence - in their silent yet peripatetic way. In this turning towards nature there is a recognition of the spiritual essence of the world as separate and distinct from humankind's inhumanity to each other. In a contemporary context, the prevalence of people from across Africa displaced into South Africa demands a closer consideration of human connections to the land, as does the recent crisis of Syrian migrants in Europe and the ensuing ethnic xenophobia. At present there are 60 million people displaced due to war, religious tension, politics and race. However, there is hope in the care provided by non-governmental organisations, the United Nations, governments and grassroots initiatives; people who want to help those with a bag and a child on their back.

Kriminalitet kan påføre individer tap og traumer og påføre samfunnet store kostnader. En reduksjon i kriminalitet er beskyttelse for individet og en indirekte innsparing av kostnader for samfunnet. Straffen for kriminelle handlinger må følgelig være slik at tilbakefallet til ny kriminalitet blir mindre. Valg av straffereaksjon, som betinget, ubetinget eller samfunnsstraff, har vist seg å ikke påvirke det samlede tilbakefallet i særlig grad. ‖Straff som virker‖ innebærer blant annet mer- og bedre rehabilitering. Også blant befolkningen generelt har oppfattelsen om at rehabilitering har effekt på tilbakefall, slått rot. I løpet av den siste delen av det 20. århundre skjedde det betydelige endringer i arbeidet med rehabilitering av innsatte. Man fant blant annet ut hvilke prinsipper som hang sammen med endring og programmene skulle lages med utgangspunkt i disse. På 90-tallet ble det vanlig med manualiserte program i kriminalomsorgen. Det er gjort mye forskning som bekrefter effekten kognitive atferdsprogram som følger prinsippene for ‖what works‖ har på residiv. Denne oppgaven ser på rehabilitering i kriminalomsorgen med spesielt fokus på sinnemestring på Tunga fengsel i Trondheim. Sinnemestringsprogrammet, som er utviklet av Brøset, er et kognitivt basert program for sinne og vold som retter seg mot deltakere med korte voldsdommer. I tillegg til en teoretisk gjennomgang av forskning på rehabiliteringsprogrammer i fengsel, blir problemstillingen eksemplifisert gjennom svarene fra 19 deltakerevalueringer av sinnemestringsprogrammet. Svarene kan tyde på at deltakerne synes programmet har vært nyttig og at de opplever endring etter endt kurs. Spesielt kan det se ut som deltakerne har hatt nytte av sinnesirkelen; å se sammenhengen mellom tanker, følelser og handlinger, og lære seg et verktøy for å komme seg ut av sinnesirkelen; time-out. Det er flere variabler, som hvorvidt programmet følger prinsippene for what works, metodiske variabler, grad av implementering og hvorvidt vold er forårsaket av sinne, som gjør at forskjellige studier kan vise til ulike effekt. Dette blir diskutert i oppgaven.

Dans le contexte d'une formulation integrale, le probleme electromagnetique est resolu par une methode de moments. Cette analyse est precedee de l'etude qualitative d'une antenne fente de radiocompas en vue de l'augmentation de la bande passante. L'evolution retenue consiste a disposer les amplificateurs directement dans la fente. Dans l'etude electromagnetique, l'extension spatiale des sources est introduite explicitement dans la formulation et les elements localises ou repartis dans la fente sont decrits lors de l'ecriture des conditions aux limites par l'introduction d'un operateur admittance de surface. Leur influence est etudiee sur l'impedance presentee aux sources et sur la synthese des diagrammes de rayonnement et la polarisation des champs rayonnes. Le domaine de representation des operateurs de rayonnement et le choix des fonctions de description sont discutes. Une analyse generale des antennes actives invariantes par rotation est proposee. Les resultats presentes concernent des antennes utilisees tant en radiogonometrie qu'en radiometrie.

Syftet med denna rapport är att få en inblick hur elstängselaggregat fungerar och hur energimängden, från en stöt, noterar. Det har då tagits fram en förstudie om vilka elstängselaggregat och vilka mätinstrument som ska användas. Mätningar har gjorts både i laborationsmiljö och ute i jordbruksmiljö. En enklare funktion och uppbyggnad har undersökts och kontrollerats för att visa strömmar och spänningar från varje elstängselaggregat. Energimängden kan sedan räknas ut. Dessutom tar rapporten upp problem i jordbruksmiljö och i instrumenten.

La thérapie cellulaire apparaît comme une alternative attrayante pour traiter les défauts osseux. Certaines équipes chirurgicales pratiquent déjà un rapprochement des tissus avec le périoste et l’interposition d’un lambeau muqueux nasal permettant de fermer le versant vestibulaire de la gencive, en prolongeant la plastie vestibulaire sur la crête gingivale. Ils ont constaté des défauts osseux moins importants et même, chez certains patients, un comblement du défaut osseux sans apport d’os complémentaire. Notre cohorte porteuse de fentes comprend des sujets d’étude opportuns car ils ne sont pas porteurs de polypathologies, ne sont pas polymédicamentés et n’ont pas de comportement addictif pouvant fausser les résultats des greffes. Dans ce contexte, les cellules souches mésenchymateuses nasales représentent une alternative intéressante car elles sont facilement accessibles chez des enfants opérés sous anesthésie générale de façon itérative. Nous pensons pouvoir démontrer la capacité de remodelage osseux chez des patients bien portants, sans tare associée, après greffe autologue de cellules ecto-mésenchymateuses de la cavité nasale. Pour cela, nous souhaitons récupérer des cellules de la muqueuse olfactive chez 5 patients porteur de fentes labio-maxillo-palatine, afin d’évaluer leur potentiel en thérapie cellulaire pour la régénération osseuse. Nous allons donc caractériser cette population cellulaire, étudier la possibilité de conservation de ces cellules souches nasales dans un but thérapeutique et vérifier l’absence d’altération de leur capacité ostéogénique. Ceci est une étape indispensable avant d’envisager un essai clinique de thérapie cellulaire<br>Cell therapy appears to be an attractive alternative for treating bone defects. Some surgical teams are already practicing a tissue filling with the periosteum and the interposition of a nasal mucosal flap to close the vestibular side of the gingiva, extending the vestibular plasty on the gingival crest. They found less important bone defects in some patients, a filling of the bone defect without adding additional bone. However, it remains a surgical intuition, based on findings during the evolution of the surgical technique. Our cohort includes young patients that do not carry polypathologies, are not polymedicated and have no addictive behavior that could potentially affect the results. In this context, nasal mesenchymal stem cells represent an attractive alternative because they are readily available in children undergoing general anesthesia iteratively. Here, we want to demonstrate the potential of autologous ecto-mesenchymal stem cells of the nasal cavity in the bone regeneration. To do that, we will collect nasal mesenchymental stem cells in 5 young patients with cleft in view to study their potential for bone regeneration. We will characterise this cell population, we will study parameters of conservation before their therapeutical use and their subsequent osteogenic properties. This is a crucial step before an eventual cell therapy clinical trial

Les fentes orales sont des malformations congénitales d'origine complexe, dépendant à la fois d'expositions environnementales et d'influences génétiques. L'objectif général de ce travail est la recherche d'interactions gène-environnement dans leur étiologie. Ce projet s'appuie sur une étude épidémiologique cas-témoins menée en France (1998-2001, 240 cas-236 témoins) intégrant un schéma d'étude cas-parents. Il présente les méthodes statistiques à ce jour disponibles pour évaluer une interaction gène-environnement selon les deux schémas d'étude. Un modèle spécifique est utilisé pour différencier les effets du génotype de l'enfant de celui de la mère. Ce projet s'intéresse au gène ADH1C et à la consommation maternelle d'alcool, au gène MTHFR et à l'apport en folates de la mère, et à l'exposition professionnelle de la mère aux solvants organiques en interaction avec des gènes de métabolisme/détoxication tels que CYP2E1, ADH1C, GSTM1 et GSTT1.

The hydrodynamic excitation and response behavior of multi-body systems with
varying degrees of coupling presents many challenges for designers of offshore
structures. In this study, attention is focused upon the analysis and interpretation of
experimental data obtained for an unmanned deepwater mini-Tension Leg Platform
(mini-TLP) coupled to a tender barge. Each body has its own mooring system and the
bodies are connected by two breast lines extending from central points on the mini-TLP
to central points on the bow and stern of the tender barge. A fender system is located
between the two platforms. Thus the two floating bodies are constrained to move
together in surge and yaw while they are free to move independently in heave, roll and
pitch with some limitations on sway.
The data of the individual records are characterized using statistical moments,
including skewness and kurtosis, to examine the degree of non-Gaussian behavior.
Correlation analysis and cross spectral analysis are used to investigate the relationships
between selected measurements such as the motion of each vessel, tensions in the
mooring lines and tendons and the forces on the fenders. The analysis shows that the
coupling effects reduce the mooring line and tendon tensions significantly and that the
motions of the two vessels influence the line tensions and fender forces. The data
distribution patterns followed by the parameters and the corresponding extreme values
are also investigated.
