Abstract:
The article examines I ventitre giorni della città di Alba, one of Beppe Fenoglio’s early texts about the Italian resistance during the Second World War. Largely ignored at the time of its first publication, it rose to fame only in the 1960s. This is strongly linked to the fact that Fenoglio depicts the resistance as a civil war, a rather controversial issue in post-war Italy. He deheroises the partisans and shows the inadequacy of social categories by adopting a specific narrative strategy that focuses on the mundane and the ridiculous.

Abstract:
Beppe Fenoglio’s most famous novel, Partigiano Johnny, is not actually a novel at all, but a posthumous philological reconstruction of a series of typescripts that inspired one of the fiercest Italian literary debates of the postwar period. This debate reached a fever pitch in the 1990s as Italy was coming to terms with the impact of the Resistenza on national identity. As a partisan-writer with no connections to fascism, Fenoglio long occupied a stabilizing role in the Italian literary canon, intensifying the stakes for academics who wished to “heal” the wounds of his fragmented text and use them to produce a coherent, redemptive Resistance narrative, with Johnny- Fenoglio serving as a contemporary Dante. However, the incomplete, incompatible typescripts structurally refute the dominant postwar rhetoric that depicts the armistice as a “radical rupture” in Italian history, a “year zero” that catalyzed Italy’s rebirth. With no clear beginning or end, the texts enact a structural resistance that is echoed thematically in the partisan-protagonist’s metatextual reflections on the difficulty of narrating the Resistenza after the war has ended, which he theorizes in Dantean terms. Reading these thematic and structural resistances, this essay argues that they suggest that the “incomplete” archive is not treatable. Rather than opposing the philological debate or taking sides, I consider how this unstable text and the surrounding efforts to reconstruct it, collectively testify to the trauma of writing and remembering the Resistenza.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Our research is a study of Beppe Fenoglio's novels and short stories focusing on the Italian Resistance (September 8th, 1943 – April 25th, 1945). The novelist, a former soldier in the irregular Italian army, has transposed his own experience in a complex work, which blends novel, autobiography, testimony and chronicle. We have compared Fenoglio's novels and short stories with the war chronicles of the period, in order to bring out the similarities but above all the differences between them. These differences concern the writing, as well as the way the events and the characters are presented, and the time and the space in which the action takes place, and they combine to form a work whose subject is not only the Italian Resistance. The historical events, often very accurately presented, are the means to talk about the human condition. We have endeavoured to follow a path leading from the autobiography to a more universal approach and in doing so we have discovered a novelist who presents the adventure of human experience in war as a series of events endowed with literary implications, and as the quest for an ideal

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis is a psychoanalytical reading of the works. The study deals first with characters, then with the narrative authority and, only in the third part, with the author. The various steps of the research show the existence of a dominant obsessional structure : the heroes want to join others groups but they move away at once, thus facing death. Often landscapes and nature are hostile, but they conceal the continuous presence of primary fantasies (in particular the fantasy of antenatal life). The study of the author, mainly based on his stammering, tends to prove his urge to hide his language in order not to reveal the desire for the mother it contained : this handicap (with obsessional and hysterical components) is paralleled with fenoglio's urge to lard his texts with words or even sentences written in english, thus creating an unusual style. The psychological ambivalence visible in his stories corresponds to the aesthetic ambivalence of a two face work, both realistic and extremely innovating

Seed, Ian. "Literature and resistance : dimensions of commitment in the writings of Beppe Fenoglio and the Italian neorealists." Thesis, Lancaster University, 2012. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.657630.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the different layers of commitment in the writings of Beppe Fenoglio and the Italian neorealists. This involves a reassessment of the neorealist literature of the 1940s and early 1950s, which I argue is far more varied, exploratory and experimental than is generally given credit for. I contend that Fenoglio's writing has a much closer relationship to neorealism than many critics believe. However, it is also the case to say that no partisan author is as critical of the Resistance as Beppe Fenoglio was. What then is the nature of his commitment? Through an examination of Fenoglio's Resistance writings, together with an appraisal of the historical and cultural context in which they were created, I show that Fenoglio's work is driven by a profound moral realism which continually searches for new ways to confront the traumatic nature of civil war and its aftermath. The focus of this examination is on the following works: Appunti partigiani; the Resistance short stories contained in I ventitre giorni della dtta di Alba; 11 partigiano Johnny (taken as a whole to include Primavera di bellezza and Ur partigiano Johnny); Una questione privata; and in conclusion one of Fenoglio's last short stories 'Ciao, Old Lion'. Drawing on existential models, I make the case that it is Fenoglio who uniquely out of the neorealist writers explores what it means to be individually 'authentic' in times of momentous historical happenings while contemporaneously subverting the possibility of 'authenticity', thus leading to a fiction which is 'true', and which is more genuinely 'authentic'. I show that there is no necessary contradiction between the 'existential' and 'historical' interpretations of Fenoglio's work, which have dominated the debate between critics for the last four decades. Indeed, I argue that the two critical approaches should be married in order to enrich our understanding of Fenoglio's complex vision of the Resistance and the significance of his achievement.

Bindel, Sandra. Caen, 1994. http://www.theses.fr/1994CAEN1154.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to study the link between feminine characters and engagement in the narrative productions of three italian writers, cesare pavese, beppe fenoglio and carlo bassola, following an order as much cronological as thematic. Through the analysis of the texts and their versions, of the biography, of the feminine characters' tipology, the study tends to show that the evolution of the image of the woman is parallel to the evolution of the engagement's prolematic aspect, for each of the authors. The first part shows that for cesare pavese woman is at the same time the element which illustrates the refusal to engage oneself, and also the alibi, the explosive element that leads to conscience of the necessity to take part to historical events. The second part reveals that in beppe fenoglio's production, the feminine characters personify the civil life, from which man, in a puritan vision of struggle, must break away to adhere to the resistance, but whose presence constitudes for the partsan a moral landmark. The third part brings up the role of the positive antagonist of the partisan that carlo cassola assignes to the feminine characters. He is the holder of the individual and traditional values, the spokesman of the anti-ideological morality that the author opposes to the collective values of the history
