Abstract:

The article examines I ventitre giorni della città di Alba, one of Beppe Fenoglio’s early texts about the Italian resistance during the Second World War. Largely ignored at the time of its first publication, it rose to fame only in the 1960s. This is strongly linked to the fact that Fenoglio depicts the resistance as a civil war, a rather controversial issue in post-war Italy. He deheroises the partisans and shows the inadequacy of social categories by adopting a specific narrative strategy that focuses on the mundane and the ridiculous.

Abstract:

Beppe Fenoglio’s most famous novel, Partigiano Johnny, is not actually a novel at all, but a posthumous philological reconstruction of a series of typescripts that inspired one of the fiercest Italian literary debates of the postwar period. This debate reached a fever pitch in the 1990s as Italy was coming to terms with the impact of the Resistenza on national identity. As a partisan-writer with no connections to fascism, Fenoglio long occupied a stabilizing role in the Italian literary canon, intensifying the stakes for academics who wished to “heal” the wounds of his fragmented text and use them to produce a coherent, redemptive Resistance narrative, with Johnny- Fenoglio serving as a contemporary Dante. However, the incomplete, incompatible typescripts structurally refute the dominant postwar rhetoric that depicts the armistice as a “radical rupture” in Italian history, a “year zero” that catalyzed Italy’s rebirth. With no clear beginning or end, the texts enact a structural resistance that is echoed thematically in the partisan-protagonist’s metatextual reflections on the difficulty of narrating the Resistenza after the war has ended, which he theorizes in Dantean terms. Reading these thematic and structural resistances, this essay argues that they suggest that the “incomplete” archive is not treatable. Rather than opposing the philological debate or taking sides, I consider how this unstable text and the surrounding efforts to reconstruct it, collectively testify to the trauma of writing and remembering the Resistenza.

Abstract:

In questo contributo viene esaminato il racconto Golia di Beppe Fenoglio con l’obiettivo di individuare particolari scelte linguistiche e stilistiche finalizzate alla rappresentazione della comunicazione tra italiani e tedeschi. In particolare, si analizza l’uso del tedesco da parte degli italiani e viceversa. Grande risalto, inoltre, è dato ai procedimenti di semplificazione linguistica tipica dei discenti di una lingua sconosciuta. Dopo un confronto con altri testi di argomento simile, l’analisi si chiude con alcune proposte interpretative circa le scelte linguistiche determinate dalla concezione fenogliana della Resistenza.

Il 5 marzo del 1922 nasceva a Bologna Pier Paolo Pasolini e Cuadernos de Filología Italiana ha scelto di inaugurare con il suo nome il ritorno editoriale di una proposta monografica che da questo numero accompagnerà nuovamente le tradizionali sezioni di linguistica, letteratura e delle recensioni. Gli anniversari, si sa, possono essere momenti ambigui della riflessione e a volte convogliano su un dato autore attenzioni dal valore più mondano che intellettuale; il 2022, per giunta, ci ricorda che cento anni fa nascevano anche, solo per restare in ambito letterario, Beppe Fenoglio, Giorgio Manganelli, Luigi Meneghello e Luciano Bianciardi. Le ragioni della nostra scelta si fondano innanzitutto sulla capacità che Pasolini ha di interrogare ancora e sempre i nostri studenti, spesso stupiti nei loro primi approcci con l’autore che più di ogni altro, nella complessa costellazione del nostro Novecento, rinnova in ugual misura sconcerto e ammirazione in chi gli si avvicina per la prima volta, anche grazie o a causa del suo essere arcipelago di linguaggi e proposte. La sua esperienza artistica, per giunta, compressa in un trentennio vertiginoso, non può essere ascritta a una sola disciplina di studi e ciò ci pone automaticamente nella circostanza di aprire le maglie della nostra specializzazione ad altri sguardi e altri saperi. Vastità e complessità – e ben inteso, inciampi e contraddizioni – restano a buon conto caratteri essenziali della sua opera, eredità da coltivare e mettere in valore. Quasi cinquant’anni dopo la sua morte, pensiamo inoltre che sia possibile osservare la sua traiettoria consapevoli che ai significati della sua opera, per usare un’acuta analisi di Walter Siti (2005: 135), si è andato sovrapponendo il significante del «mito Pasolini». Non ignoriamo, del resto, che è a quel mito che spesso si avvicinano abbagliati altri giovani e altri artisti, ma ciò non ci esime, semmai ci incita, dal proseguire il lavoro ermeneutico, filologico e culturale che qui presentiamo.

Abstract:

In this article I explore the representation of partisan fighters provided by Elio Vittorini and Beppe Fenoglio in their novels Uomini e no (1945) and Una questione privata (1963), through the lens of Hannah Arendt's reflection on totalitarianism’s exploitation of the weakened boundaries between public and private, and on partisans’ reappropriation of the public realm during the Resistance struggle. I argue that partisan characters Enne 2 and Milton display the psychological burden derived from their choice to engage in the public realm, and from the subsequent necessity to act and use violence in order to pursue the goal of Liberation from totalitarianism. Basing these literary figures on their own engagement in the Resistenza, Vittorini and Fenoglio offer a counterargument to Arendt's claim that the private becomes a sad and opaque dimension for those who reappropriated the public – their paper partisans experience the unbearable weight deriving from public engagement, and struggle with a desire to find refuge, respectively, in their personal and interior dimensions.
