Abstract:

Abstract:
Iron ludwigite exhibits a superstructure between 283 and 144 K. Anomalies in its transport properties are due to a structural transition related to a charge-ordering phenomenon in the low-dimensional structure. This ordering produces a commensurate transversal charge density wave in the system. To understand these structural characteristics, an X-ray single-crystal diffraction study has been performed at 300 and 15 K. No changes were found in the crystalline structure, except for contraction of the cell volume. The bond-valence sum for each cation shows that at room temperature each Fe4—Fe2—Fe4 triad is composed of three Fe3+ions with one extra electron per triad, and at 15 K in each Fe4a—Fe2—Fe4btriad the extra electron is accommodated in the Fe4a—Fe2 pair of each triad.

Abstract:
Research and practice involving parties from different disciplines is of increasing importance in many fields. In the arts, this has manifested itself in both increasing attention on established collaborative partnerships – composers, for example, collaborating with writers, choreographers and directors – and a move towards more overtly cross-, multi-, inter- and/or trans-disciplinary forms of working – a composer working with a physicist, philosopher or psychologist. Composer-composer partnerships are far less common, meaning intradisciplinary collaboration is little explored in relation to practice research in music. This article takes the collaborative music theatre composition I only know I am (2019) created by the authors – Litha Eftythmiou and Martin Scheuregger – as a case study, outlining the issues and opportunities that arise through combining two compositional practices in an effort to create a single artistic output. Ways in which the composers managed this process are detailed in the context of communication, technology, and the issue of tacit knowledge (of both individual compositional process and the working of intradisciplinary collaboration). In particular, reflections on their experience during a week-long residency, in which they collaborated on a single musical work, is discussed in order to understand to what extent two aesthetic approaches can be reconciled to create work satisfactory to both parties. Notions of composition as an inherently collaborative process are used to contextualise the means by which composer-composer collaborations might be understood. The authors reflect on an understanding of intradisciplinarity in the context of their practice as composers in order to draw conclusions that will allow them, and others, to approach composer-composer collaboration in an informed manner.

Abstract:
Mineral leaching from compost can be environmentally disruptive. Little information is available regarding trace mineral leaching from equine-sourced compost. The objective of this study was to quantify the mineral content and leaching potential of compost produced from feces of horses fed different amounts and forms (organic or inorganic) of trace minerals. Nine horses were fed three treatments in a 3 × 3 replicated Latin Square design. The dietary treatments were provided as a daily pellet: CON (pellet without added trace minerals), ING (added inorganic trace minerals), and ORG (added organic trace minerals). The added trace minerals were Co, Cu, Mn, and Zn. Feces were collected from each horse after a 16-day feeding period, combined with straw, composted, and then subjected to simulated rainfall to measure mineral mobility. Concentrations of Co, Cu, Mn, and Zn were greater in ING and ORG compared to CON compost (p < 0.05); additionally, ING had greater Zn than ORG compost (p < 0.05). More Cu leached from ING and ORG compared to CON (p < 0.05). The most Zn leached from ING, followed by ORG, and the least amount leached from CON compost (p < 0.05). Dietary trace mineral intake affected the trace mineral concentration in the compost and amount available to leach during rainfall events.

Abstract:
Perfect magnetic conductors (PMCs) can help in the enhancement of antenna impedance bandwidth using their capability of reflecting the incident waves without phase reversal. The purpose of this paper is to show the advantages of using a perfect magnetic conductor in antenna engineering. The goal is to use it in waveguide-fed slot array antennas, increasing both the antenna impedance and radiation bandwidths. To this aim, a PMC-based rectangular waveguide composed of longitudinal slots is convenient. The impedance of the proposed array structure is calculated analytically. To compare analytical results with the simulation results, PEC- and PMC-based waveguide-fed slot arrays are designed and simulated in a certain frequency band. The simulation results are in good agreement with the theoretical predictions.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
In North Korea, with songs fundamental to ideology and central to cultural production, composers face challenges. How can large-scale pieces for instrumental ensembles and orchestras be composed? This chapter begins by discussing how composition activity developed in North Korea, initially with Japanese and then Soviet influence. It considers key early compositions that are no longer acceptable for performance in North Korea. It then shows how early, Japanese-colonial-era popular song structures were upscaled to create symphonic poems, and, from these, how combining the songs and interpretations of the dramatic action of revolutionary operas allowed these to be upscaled into symphonic works. The focus then shifts to the avant-garde composer Isang Yun (1917–1995), who was the best-known Korean composer of the twentieth century in international circles. Yun, after being forced to return to South Korea from Germany and being tried for sedition, was latterly celebrated in North Korea, and his story became the subject of four feature-length films made in Pyongyang. The chapter analyzes three of his most political works to explain why, despite his celebrity, his musical style was never fully acceptable to North Korea, and how he failed to fully embrace the socialist realism frame that North Korean ideology required.

Abstract:
In this chapter aspects of Berg’s life during his last eight years are recounted. Berg’s childhood friend Hermann Watznauer proposed a biography of Berg, in which project the composer concurred. Berg was offered an academic appointment at the Berlin Musikhochschule, but he preferred to stay in Vienna, hoping for a position at the Vienna Music Academy, which did not materialize. His complex relations with his family contributed to a slowing of his attention to music. As his mood darkened, he complained of losing his ability to compose, and he attempted to revive his spirits by flirtations with two women, Anny Askenase and Edith Edwards. Berg purchased a summer retreat, the Waldhaus, in 1932. From about this time, with the rise of the Nazis, Berg’s music had few performances in Germany and Austria and he gradually faced a financial crisis. In 1929 he received a lucrative commission from the soprano Ružena Herlinger to compose a concert aria for her use. Berg then composed Der Wein, a setting for voice and orchestra of poetry by Baudelaire. The work was his first to bring in styles from popular dance music such as the tango.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the career of Japanese American composer and arranger Tak Shindo (1922–2002). Shindo grew up nisei in Los Angeles. Japanese American musical life is discussed with a focus on the community’s 1933 production of Sakura composed by Claude Lapham in the Hollywood Bowl. Interned at Manzanar during World War II, Shindo began musical studies through the camp’s programs. Although devoted to Latin jazz, he repeatedly served during the Cold War as a Japanese musical advisor for such Hollywood composers as Franz Waxman and Max Steiner (Sayonara, Cry for happy, and A majority of one). Several of his 1950s and 60s albums—combining elements of Japanese music with the big band style—were successful in the exotica genre. Shindo’s self-Orientalism is compared with the musical exoticism of Martin Denny. A brief discussion of subsequent Japanese American jazz follows. The chapter concludes with a profile of the composer Paul Chihara.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses Erich Korngold's changing status as a composer in the twentieth century. Since the early 1970s, spurred by popular modern recordings of Korngold's film music and the embrace of the Violin Concerto as a favored vehicle by a new generation of aspiring violinists, both Korngold's career as a composer and his output have gained in currency and respectability. Korngold's posthumous good fortune is the unanticipated consequence of the return to legitimacy, at the end of the twentieth century, of an aesthetic eclecticism regarding contemporary music. The belief in the exclusive legitimacy of an aesthetics of a radical modernism—justified by history, for the postwar world—has vanished. Minimalism, a new Romanticism, the integration with forms of popular music, and the blurring of genre distinctions all can be found in the music composed during the last forty years. These have turned Korngold from marginal figure into a prominent representative of the twentieth century, alongside other unjustly forgotten composers of a more “conservative” character.

Abstract:
In the aerospace industry, open hole specimens of composite laminates have been used in standardized tests to generate design allowables. Using finite element method (FEM) based tool MicMac/FEA with AB AQUS code interface and statistical design of experiments, Shah, et al. in 2010 [11] studied average-property-based failure envelope with uncertainty estimates of open hole specimen with quasi-isotropic carbon fiber-epoxy laminate. However, their FEM model is deterministic, without uncertainty analysis. In this paper, based on Shah’s FEM model, we developed FEM model of uni-axial strength test of holed composite laminates using ABAQUS with a serious of quadrilateral S4R and trilateral S3R shell element designs. The mesh density ranges from the original 8 × 8 (very coarse) to 48 × 48 (very fine). For each of the meshes, we compute the failure strength from Hasin failure criteria. Then we use a 4-parameter logistic function nonlinear least squares fit algorithm to obtain an estimate of the failure strength at infinite degrees of freedom (d.o.f) as well as its uncertainty at 50,000-d.o.f. and relative error convergence rates. Our results are then compared with Shah’s with the additional advantage that our results have uncertainty quantification that can be compared with experimental data. The significance and limitation of our method on the uncertainty quantification of FEM model of uniaxial strength test of holed composite laminates are discussed.

Abstract:
Research Institute of Advanced Materials Gas-Generator (AMG), a joint effort by the Japan Key Technology Center and 14 companies in Japan, has, since 1993, been conducting technological studies on an innovative gas generator that will use 20% less fuel, weigh 50% less, and emit 70% less NOx than the conventional gas generator through the use of advanced materials[1]. In the course of R&D, the feasibility of applying a gradient composite material with ceramic matrix composite (CMC) and glass matrix composite (GMC), which is expected to reduce the thermal stress of actual parts with temperature distribution, was evaluated based on its mechanical and thermal properties, productivity and stress analysis for an actual part as a combustor liner with 500 mm diameter, and non-cooled combustion tests for the liner outlet temperature of 1873 K. Through our studies we have confirmed the applicability of the selected CMC/GMC hybrid composite as a combustor liner.

Abstract:
In the last few years, the restrictive safety standards and the need for weight reduction have brought the crashworthiness research to focus on composite materials because of their high energy absortion-to-mass ratio. On the other hand, the possibility of obtaining predictive dynamic FEA models for these new materials is still an open issue: the present work aims at developing a methodology for the characterization of composite materials with particular interest for the head impact simulation. Composite materials behavior, defined through the mathematical models implemented in FEA codes, is very complex and requires a large amount of physical and numerical setting parameters. The majority of these parameters can be obtained by an experimental campaign that involves several kind of different tests. The presented methodology allows to obtain a good numerical-experimental correlation simply performing few tests which emulate the behavior of the component during the head impact event. A software tool based on a genetic optimization technique has been developed in order to determinate automatically the material properties values that guarantee the best numerical-experimental correlation.

Abstract:
The active magnetic bearing (AMB) is a new kind of high-performance bearing which suspends the rotor with controlled electromagnetic force. It was chosen to support the rotor of the helium blower in HTR-PM instead of conventional bearings. The power losses in the active magnetic bearings compose of three components: copper loss, iron loss and windage loss. In this paper, the iron loss, which composes of the eddy current loss and the hysteresis loss, is researched. The power loss of silicon steel lamination (35H300) was measured. Experimental data was taken over a range of 50Hz to 25,000Hz (sinusoidal current) for several magnetic field intensities. According to the experimental data, the eddy current loss and hysteresis loss increase with the frequency. And the hysteresis loss in the silicon steel lamination occupies the major part when the frequency of current is low, however the growth rate of eddy current is much faster than that of the hysteresis loss. And the FEM calculation of power loss in the magnetic bearing, which rotor and stator are made from silicon steel lamination (35H300), is also presented. The result shows the core loss of magnetic bearing also follow the separation theory. We can separate the core loss of magnetic bearing into two parts: hysteresis loss and eddy current loss. It will be very useful to calculate the power loss in the magnetic bearing.

Abstract:
Wood or Blood? New scores and new sounds for voice and clarinet Astrid Kvalbein and Gjertrud Pedersen, Norwegian Academy of Music What is this thing called a score, and how do we relate to it as performers, in order to realize a musical work? This is the fundamental question of this exposition. As a duo we have related to scores in a variety of ways over the years: from the traditional reading and interpreting of sheet music of works by distant (some dead) composers, to learning new works in dialogue with living composers and to taking part in the creative processes from the commissioning of a work to its premiere and beyond. This reflective practice has triggered many questions: could the score for instance be conceptualized as a contract, in which some elements are negotiable and others are not? Where two equal parts, the performer(s) and the composer might have qualitatively different assignments on how to realize the music? Finally: might reflecting on such questions influence our interpretative practices? To shed light on these issues, we take as examples three works from our recent repertoire: Ragnhild Berstad’s Vevtråd (Weaving thread, 2010), Jan Martin Smørdal’s The Lesser Nighthawk (2012) and Lene Grenager’s Tre eller blod (Wood or blood, 2005). We will share – attempt to unfold – some of the experiences gained from working with this music, in close collaboration and dialogue with the composers. Observing the processes from a certain temporal distance, we see how our attitudes as a duo has developed over a longer span of time, into a more confident 'we'.

Abstract:
Blue Mountain is a 35-minute work for two actors and orchestra. It was commissioned by the Ultima Festival, and premiered in 2014 by the Danish National Chamber Orchestra. The Ultima festival challenged me – being both a composer and writer – to make something where I wrote both text and music. Interestingly, I hadn’t really thought of that before, writing text to my own music – or music to my own text. This is a very common thing in popular music, the songwriter. But in the lied, the orchestral piece or indeed in opera, there is a strict division of labour between composer and writer. There are exceptions, most famously Wagner, who did libretto, music and staging for his operas. And 20th century composers like Olivier Messiaen, who wrote his own poems for his music – or Luciano Berio, who made a collage of such detail that it the text arguably became his own in Sinfonia. But this relationship is often a convoluted one, not often discussed in the tradition of musical analysis where text tend to be taken as a given, not subjected to the same rigorous scrutiny that is often the case with music. This exposition is an attempt to unfold this process of composing with both words and music. A key challenge has been to make the text an intrinsic part of the performance situation, and the music something more than mere accompaniment to narration. To render the words meaningless without the music and vice versa. So the question that emerged was how music and words can be not only equal partners, but also yield a new species of music/text? A second questions follows en suite, and that is what challenges the conflation of different roles – the writer and the composer – presents? I will try to address these questions through a discussion of the methods applied in Blue Mountain, the results they have yielded, and the challenges this work has posed.
