Iron ludwigite exhibits a superstructure between 283 and 144 K. Anomalies in its transport properties are due to a structural transition related to a charge-ordering phenomenon in the low-dimensional structure. This ordering produces a commensurate transversal charge density wave in the system. To understand these structural characteristics, an X-ray single-crystal diffraction study has been performed at 300 and 15 K. No changes were found in the crystalline structure, except for contraction of the cell volume. The bond-valence sum for each cation shows that at room temperature each Fe4—Fe2—Fe

In this paper I argue against the view widely held among feminists that nurturing and competition are incompatible. I also explore the following two more specific objections against competition: (1) competitions are “mini-wars” which encourage hatred; (2) while not “miniwars,” competitions foster a war-like mentality. Underlying these objections is the fear that too strong a sense of self makes war likely by severing connection with others. I argue that because patriarchy encourages women to have too little sense of self, some competition may be useful.

Abstract:
Iron and copper toxicity has been presumed to involve the formation of hydroxyl radical (*OH) from H2O2 in the Fenton reaction. The aim of this study was to verify that Fe2+-O2 and Cu+-O2 chemistry is capable of generating *OH in the quasi physiological environment of Krebs-Henseleit buffer (KH), and to compare the ability of the Fe2+-O2 system and of the Fenton system (Fe2+ + H2O2) to produce *OH. The addition of Fe2+ and Cu+ (0-20 microM) to KH resulted in a concentration-dependent increase in *OH formation, as measured by the salicylate method. While Fe3+ and Cu2+ (0-20 microM) did not resu

A minimized linear ultrasonic motor was proposed, and two flexural bimorph vibrators were utilized to form its stator. The construction of the linear ultrasonic motor and its operation principle was introduced. Two working modes with the same local deformation distribution were chosen on the basis of Finite Element Analysis (FEA). To obtain its optimized structural parameters, sensitivities on frequency difference were calculated, and a way of decreasing the frequency difference of two working modes was introduced. A prototype of the optimized model was made. The modal testing of the stator an

This study investigated the microbial community developed in a UASB reactor for hydrogen production and correlated it to reactor performance. The reactor was inoculated with kitchen waste compost and fed with raw cheese whey at two organic loading rates, 20 gCOD/Ld and 30 gCOD/Ld. Hydrogen production was very variable, using an OLR of 30 gCOD/Ld averaged 1.0 LH2/Ld with no methane produced under these conditions. The hydrogen yield was also very variable and far from the theoretical. This low yield could be explained by selection of a mixed fermentative population with presence of hydrogen pro

This year sees the centenary (on 1 May) of the birth of the composer Jón Leifs. Had it fallen just a few years earlier the occasion would have attracted virtually no attention outside his native Iceland, but over the past four years a series of CD recordings, mainly from the Swedish label BIS, has done much to establish Leifs as a figure of far more than local significance. His output included three string quartets, piano music, songs, choral works (both accompanied and unaccompanied) a sizeable number of short orchestral works, an organ concerto, oratorios and the first ever symphony composed

A taxonomic study was performed on 15 bacterial isolates from the caeca of gnotobiotic mice that had been fed with thermophile-fermented compost. The 15 isolates were thermophilic, Gram-stain-positive, facultatively anaerobic, endospore-forming bacteria, and were most closely related to Bacillus thermoamylovorans CNCM I-1378T. The 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain N-11T, selected as representative of this new group, showed a similarity of 99.4 % with Bacillus thermoamylovorans CNCM I-1378T, 94.7 % with Bacillus thermolactis R-6488T, and 94.4 % with Bacillus kokeshiiformis MO-04T. Although Olaus had little general understanding of the magnetic compass or of navigation in the Far North, he evidently did not intend the navigational device he drew on Hvitsark to represent a magnetic compass, but a sundial. His muddled ideas about the relationship between 12 wind-directions and direction-finding at sea by means of such a dial appear related to his second-hand information about a gnomonic navigational device used by the medieval No

A failed compass hinge external fixator for fingers has been analyzed. The device consists of polymer parts manufactured from polyetherimide. Finite element analysis (FEA) was used to investigate the principal stresses in the device under different loading conditions. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to investigate the fracture surfaces. The FEA showed that the maximum principal stress was greater than the fatigue strength of polyetherimide. The SEM fractographs confirm that failure was by brittle fatigue.
