We present ongoing investigations of a four-dimensional lattice field theory with four massless reduced staggered fermions coupled through an SU(4)-invariant fourfermion interaction. As in previous studies of four-fermion and Higgs–Yukawa models with different lattice fermion discretizations, we observe a strong-coupling phase in which the system develops a mass gap without breaking any lattice symmetry. This symmetric strong-coupling phase is separated from the symmetric weak-coupling phase by a narrow region of four-fermi coupling in which the system exhibits long-range correlations.

We construct a four-dimensional lattice gauge theory in which fermions acquire mass without breaking symmetries as a result of gauge interactions. Our model consists of reduced staggered fermions transforming in the bifundamental representation of an SU(2)×SU(2) gauge symmetry. This fermion representation ensures that single-site bilinear mass terms vanish identically. A symmetric four-fermion operator is however allowed, and we give numerical results that show that a condensate of this operator develops in the vacuum.

We identify an off-shell operator whose classical equation of motion is that of tachyon in the classical graviton-dilaton black hole background. The black hole ‘singularity’ is identified with the Fermi surface in the phase space of a single fermion, and as such is a consequence of the semiclassical approximation. This paper is devoted to formulating the interaction-picture dynamics of the self-dual field minimally coupled to fermions. As a preliminary, we quantize the free self-dual model by means of the Dirac-bracket quantization procedure. The free self-dual model turns out to be a relativistically invariant quantum field theory whose excitations are identical to the physical (gauge-invariant) excitations of the free Maxwell–Chern–Simons theory. The interacting model is also quantized through the Dirac-bracket quantization procedure. One of the self-dual field components is found not to commute, at e

It is argued that the recently observed Fermi liquids in strongly interacting ultracold Fermi gases are adiabatically connected to a projected Fermi gas. This conclusion is reached by constructing a set of Jastrow wavefunctions, following Tan's observations on the structure of the physical Hilbert space [Annals of Physics 323, 2952 (2008)]. The Jastrow projection merely implements the Bethe–Peierls condition on the BCS and Fermi gas wavefunctions. This procedure provides a simple picture of the emergence of Fermi polarons as composite fermions in the normal state of the highly polarized gas. I

The bilayer perovskite Sr3Ru2O7 has been widely studied as a canonical strange metal. It exhibits T-linear resistivity and a T log(1/T) electronic specific heat in a field-tuned quantum critical fan. Criticality is known to occur in “hot” Fermi pockets with a high density of states close to the Fermi energy. We show that while these hot pockets occupy a small fraction of the Brillouin zone, they are responsible for the anomalous transport and thermodynamics of the material. Specifically, a scattering process in which two electrons from the large, “cold” Fermi surfaces scatter into one hot and

A unified electroweak theory is formulated using non-local field theory without including a Higgs particle. The W and Z gauge boson masses are induced from one-loop vacuum polarization graphs and the non-local weak scale is determined by the W boson mass and the Fermi constant to be Λw=424 GeV . The tree graphs for the gauge bosons are identical to those of the standard local electroweak theory, so any violation of locality occurs only at the quantum level for the finite loop graphs. The fermion masses are obtained from a four-Fermi interaction with a spontaneously broken vacuum based on the f

This review considers the topological fermion condensation quantum phase transition (FCQPT) that leads to flat bands and allows the elucidation of the special behavior of heavy-fermion (HF) metals that is not exhibited by common metals described within the framework of the Landau Fermi liquid (LFL) theory. We bring together theoretical consideration within the framework of the fermion condensation theory based on the FCQPT with experimental data collected on HF metals. We show that very different HF metals demonstrate universal behavior induced by the FCQPT and demonstrate that Fermi systems n

We present a novel mechanism for generating fermion masses through global anomalies at the three-loop level. In a gauge theory, global anomalies are triggered by the possible existence of scalar or pseudoscalar states and heavy fermions, whose masses may not necessarily result from spontaneous symmetry breaking. The implications of this mass-generating mechanism for model building are discussed, including the possibility of creating low-scale fermion masses by quantum gravity effects.

This leads to a geometric formulation of the quantum theory in terms of the quantum phase space distribution of the Fermi fluid. The action has an infinite series of expansion in the string coupling, which to leading order reduces to the previously discussed geometric action for the classical Fermi fluid based on the group w∞ of area-preserving diffeomorphisms. In this talk, I briefly report on the so far achievements of the theory. In this work, we consider two-dimensional metals of fermions coupled to quantum critical scalars, the latter representing order parameters or fractionalized particles. We show that at low temperatures ( T ), such metals generically exhibit strange metal behavior with a T -linear resistivity arising from spatially random fluctuations in the fermion-scalar Yukawa couplings about a nonzero s
