SynopsisAutecology of pteridophytes may be refined by defining the plant community and habitat, and phytogeographic occurrence, of the species studied. Work withBlechnum spicantin the Pacific Northwest, and withLorinserea areolatain the Southeastern U.S.A. has uncovered autecological differences for these species across habitats differing in overstory and hydrology. Natural history observations are necessary to suggest the most appropriate hypotheses to investigate objectively. Vegetation biomass is commonly measured through destructive sampling, but this method is time-consuming and is not applicable for certain studies. Therefore, it is necessary to find reliable methods to estimate vegetation biomass indirectly. Quantification of early-seral vegetation biomass in reforested stands in the United States Pacific Northwest (PNW) is important as competition between the vegetation community and planted conifer seedlings can have important consequences on seedling performance. The goal of this study was to develop models to indirectly estimate early-seral vegetation biom

In early July 2004, a severe crown rot of Canaan fir (Abies balsamea var. phanerolepis Fern.) was reported to the Virginia Cooperative Extension, Frederick County Office, and subsequently to the Virginia Tech Disease Clinic in Virginia Beach. One thousand five-year-old Canaan fir transplants (approximately 11 mm in caliper and 31 cm high) had been purchased from a tree nursery in Oregon and planted in the field in Frederick County, VA, in April of 2004. The field site had not been cultivated for 4 years after an apple orchard had been removed in 2000. By mid-May, needle browning had become ser

Fifteen species of insect herbivores were discovered on ferns growing along the Pacific northwest coast of North America. These included insects from the orders: Diptera in the families Anthomyiidae, Cecidiomyiidae and Syrphidae: Lepidoptera in the families Erebidae, Tortricidae and Noctuidae: Hymenoptera in the family Tenthredinidae: Hemiptera in the family Aphididae and Coleoptera in the family Curculionidae. The present study illustrates these associations that provides new world and North American host records of fern herbivores. The fossil record of these families is used to determine if

Abstract:
Fungal endophytes are highly diverse, cryptic plant endosymbionts that form asymptomatic infections within host tissue. They represent a large fraction of the millions of undescribed fungal taxa on our planet with some demonstrating mutualistic benefits to their hosts including herbivore and pathogen defense and abiotic stress tolerance. Other endophytes are latent saprotrophs or pathogens, awaiting host plant senescence to begin alternative stages of their life cycles. Most, however, are likely plant commensals with no observable benefits to their hosts while under study. Yet, when considerin
