A study was made to identify and size surface breaking defects in ferromagnetic materials with eddy currents, whilst eliminating unwanted signals due to changes in magnetic permeability and probe lift-off. The former was overcome by the use of high frequencies and the latter by utilising the lift-off to characterise the defects. The lift- off or "touch" method was shown to be advantageous in that one could test steel objects having irregular surfaces, such as occurring with the presence of welds. In situations where a fully non contacting method is required the cost and complexity of an ultrasonic system is considerably higher. These usually take the form of laser based systems

The calculation was done using a code called VASP (Vienna Ab-initio Simulation Package). The code uses the Density Functional Theory to study the electronic structures of materials. By computing the surface energy of the missing-row reconstructed (110) surfaces of Au, we observe that the (1x2) structure has the lowest energy. For Pt, the (1x2) and the (1x3) structures have close surface energies. For Ir, the (331) configuration is found to have the lowest energy. The mult

Abstract:
Pollution from automobile exhaust is one of the most major environmental problems because of increasing usage of engine technologies. Diesel and lean burn gasoline engines operate under oxygen rich (lean) conditions and they emit harmfull gases to the atmosphere (CO,CO2, NO, NO2). The control of NOx emission from exhaust has become a challenging issue in engine industry because of the worldwide environmental regulations. Therefore lean-burn NOx emission control technologies have been developed to reduce emission of harmfull gases from exhausts, and the NOx storage/reduction (NSR) catalysts is
