Abstract:
Objective - The growth and magnitude of industrial sickness is a dangerous issue, not only for the present situation but also for the near future. There are many reasons that could have caused a company to become sick and the reasons could be internal or external or a combination of both. In that regard, this paper aims to analyse the presence of industrial sickness by reviewing the revival policy measures of the Fertilizer Corporation of India Limited (FCIL), particularly the Ramagundam unit. Methodology/Technique - Data for this paper are extracted from sources such as the Indian Economy reports, the Department of Fertilizers Government of India reports and personal interviews with the employees of the Fertilizers Corporation of India Limited, Ramagundam unit. Findings - The results showed that the FCIL unit became sick mainly because of poor management decisions, feeble human resource management, use of outdated technology, power-cut problems, non-availability of raw materials and wrong government policies. Novelty - This paper highlights why the FCIL has been declared as a sick company and what sort of government policies and preventive actions should be taken for revival or to rehabilitate the company. Type of Paper: Empirical Keywords: Sickness; Revival Measures; Industrial Development; Fertilizers.

Abstract:
Some of the most notable rural mobile applications attempt to improve rural livelihood productivity by making information available to farmers and fishermen on market prices, weather forecasts and other critical news, while mobile banking targets the unbanked and under banked rural populations. Corporations which have spearheaded these rural mobile applications have diverse core competence, like Thomson Reuters’ reliable and critical information, Tata Telecom is the leading telecom service provider and Iffco is a premier fertilizer company, EKO and FINO are startups. Do these companies believe that developing mobile applications for rural communities in India is “Innovations at the Bottom of the Pyramid which will be Core Drivers of the next practices” (Pralhad, 2005)? With their initial limited experience of mobile applications for rural India how did these companies set about understanding the needs of the rural people and developing mobile applications? This paper makes an in depth study of two best in class rural mobile application initiatives, i.e., Reuters Market Light and EKO by studying the situation, the actors, and the process. The learning from case study of these two companies is used to develop a framework for successful implementation of rural mobile applications targeted at rural India and strategizes how these can make more of an impacted if scaled up.

Woiwode, Christoph. "Urban risk communication in Ahmedabad, India : between slum dwellers and the municipal corporation." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2007. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1445152/.

Full text
Abstract:
Since rapid urban growth forces poor households to settle in highly congested urban areas, slum dwellers are increasingly vulnerable due to a multiplicity of hazards rooted in the environment, nature, health, society and the urban economy. Hitherto, the understanding of urban risks and the vulnerability of inhabitants has been an underrepresented subject in urban planning. The different reasoning and rationales of slum dwellers, municipal authorities and other actors provide each with different perceptions of risks. This study focuses on the communication of urban risks between two slum communities and the Municipal Corporation of Ahmedabad by examining endeavours in slum improvement and more responsive urban governance. In using a conceptual framework that synthesises socio-cultural approaches to risk, communication theories and collaborative planning theory, the thesis points out the deficiencies and potentials of risk communication in long-term urban development planning. Currently urban risk management is not recognised as an integrated, cross-sectoral topic by the Municipal Corporation. Due to the structural fabric of the administration and the lack of capacity and guidance, the notion of risk is based on conventional approaches to disaster risk management with responsibilities spread across various departments. By contrast, slum dwellers have a much more integrated understanding of the micro-level risk conditions in which they live and work. The findings of this study suggest that a meaningful two-way communication process can only take place if the interaction of stakeholders is understood in terms of human relationships that go beyond techno-bureaucratic co-ordination and the prevalent notion of mono-directional communication. This concept of communication is underpinned by values such as trust, fairness, credibility and justice in interaction in the context of urban governance. The research approach and the findings suggest areas for improved policy making and further research. The outcome of the research especially contributes to a better understanding of urban risk situations in the social and cultural contexts of poor communities in India. Hence this investigation may be viewed as a potential basis for generating practical guidelines for mitigation policies and their links to urban governance.

Abstract:
The Governor and Company of merchants of London trading into the East Indies, better known as East India Company (BIC), was founded by a charter from Queen Elisabeth l on December 31st 1600. This research, which aims to analyse "the mother of the modern corporation" from a strictly legal historical point of view, focuses on two "historical commonplaces": the one of the supposed limited liability enjoyed by the company's adventurers and the one of the supposed "democratic" character of its organisation. About the first point, our conclusion is that the company provided a very pragmatic answer to the liability question: on the one hand it borrowed money from outside, on the other hand, to pay the company's debts, the adventurers were made liable to pay leviations to the company (but not directly to the company's creditors). About the second point, we arrived at the conclusion that the EIC was a democratic organisation, but only until the middle of the 171h century: the passage from a majority of number to a majority of capital didn't take place slowly, during the 19th century (as a number of scholars have sustained), but suddenly, starting from the year 1657, and it grew stronger during the second half of that same 171h century that saw the foundation of the EIC

Steinecke, Tim. "National oil companies and state actors : an assessment of the role of Petronas and ONGC in the foreign policy decision-making process of Malaysia and India using the example of overseas investments in Sudan and South Sudan." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/7765.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis addresses the role of national oil companies and their overseas engagement in the foreign policy decision-making process of states. Over the past 40 years, national oil companies have gained importance in the international oil industry and currently control around 90 per cent of the global oil reserves. A number of political and economic factors – depleting domestic reserves, economic growth – have resulted in an increasing expansion of Asian national oil companies to Africa. Through the use of two Asian national oil companies – Malaysia's Petronas and India's Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) – and their overseas engagement in Sudan and South Sudan as case studies, the thesis assesses three aspects: factors and motives that influence the relationship between government institutions and Petronas and ONGC, the connection between this domestic relationship and the overseas engagement of both companies, and the implications of the overseas engagement of Petronas and ONGC in both Sudans for the foreign policy decision-making process of Malaysia and India. This set of questions is analysed through a comparative case study design that is supported by in-depth interviews and based on Foreign Policy Analysis (FPA), proposing a four-level theoretical framework. This thesis thus seeks to demonstrate how FPA can help assess the connection between the domestic decision-making process and the international engagement of the companies. In doing so, it not only argues that process and engagement are in fact connected, but also critically addresses conventional assumptions about the overseas engagement of national oil companies. Furthermore, this thesis questions the idea that government institutions and national oil companies act in a coherent and coordinated manner when operating abroad.

Abstract:
This doctoral thesis is a practice-led and corporate-grounded enquiry into the role of design research methods in a global technology company. The work aims to understand and communicate through a series of case studies how locally conducted participatory action research can be integrated into the processes of an in-house design team at the global NCR Corporation. It questions the current approaches taken in the design and development of consumer transaction technologies in the context of a global organisation and new markets. The thesis starts by introducing the reader to the global corporation in which the study is focused and author employed, the NCR Corporation. The contextual grounding of the corporate environment, its heritage, history and continued evolution will illustrate the dynamic yet traditional role design has played within the corporation. As a senior member of the Consumer Experience Design (Cx Design) team in the corporation the author is well placed to evaluate the role of design and how it can evolve. The immediate contextualisation is then followed by a broad examination of the literature in the field of design in a corporate culture, research methods and socially-led innovation. This will define the boundaries of interest and influence in the thesis. A participatory action research approach was taken to address the research questions. Informed by a series of hyperlocal and global community engagements framed and directed from within the corporate culture, the author defines an understanding of the levels of community engagement through design research. The resulting outputs are then applied within the context of the NCR Corporation where the impact and influence on such engagements can be understood. The author concludes that his contribution to new knowledge, the development of a Participatory Action Based Strategic Design Process, can be applied within a global technology company. The process adapts McNiff’s and Whitehead’s (2011) seven phases of action research reporting and Ravi Chhatpar’s strategic decision-making process. The thesis demonstrates the value and influence of design research methods in the design of consumer transaction technologies. The thesis provides an understanding of how design research methods have been applied in a corporate environment, how the insights are applied, and demonstrates how the research has influenced the author’s practice and therefore the wider Cx Design group.

Vetiver grass is an useful crop can produce essential oil, conversant water and soil or produce biomass energy. In which varieties of south India type are more suitable for cultivating for many uses. Although vetiver grass can survive in different extreme environmental, there are little research focus on its optimum rang for cultivated managements. In this study treat different varieties of south India type vetiver to three levels of fertilizer and different type of herbicides, investigating its responses. Finding the wet weight of vetiver’s shoot and plant’s height will increase under fertilized. But vetiver may poisoned when treat fertilizer of P2O5 more than 500kg per year per hector. To establish the field of South India type of vetiver, we usually use its tiller to vegetative propagate. And has little damage by pre-emerge herbicides which can be used to weed control. The growth regulator type’s herbicides, 2,4-D and quinclorac can post-emerge control broad-leaved and some grasses selected with small damage to vetiver. If we aim to raze vetiver hedge, which glyphosate and Imazapyr belong non selected, systemic, post-emerge herbicides have the most effectively.

India has stood out in the world since the investment bank Goldman Sachs raised BRIC. With population about 1.18 billion, It is the second most populous country. It achieved 8.8% GDP growth from 2004 to 2006. Even in the global financial recession in 2008, it still grew by 7.5%. Obviously this emerging market has potential for development. However, the caste system has been influenced for many years, the gap between rich and poor is enormous and the infrastructure is weak, therefore enterprises want to enter the Indian market successfully is not easy. D-Link founded in 1986, it focus on developing the network product had been more than two decades. There are more than 130 offices in about 60 countries, and the products have sold to over 170 countries. D-link is one of the companies that entered in India early of our nation. Therefore this study uses the D-Link case. Firstly, it introduces the network communication industry. Secondly, it analyzes India market. Thirdly, it discusses how to choose the proper entry mode for multinational enterprise when entering foreign market, and how to manage the market with international business strategy. Finally, it makes a conclusion. This study would help the enterprises of domestic IT industry to understand their ability and advantages, and finds the suitable entry mode entry into foreign markets successfully.

"Brayton Cycle Supercritical CO2 Power Block for Industrial Waste Heat Recovery." In ASME 2019 Gas Turbine India Conference. Abstract:
Abstract The Brayton cycle based supercritical CO2 (sCO2) power plant is an emerging technology with benefits such as; higher cycle efficiency, smaller component sizes, reduced plant footprint, lower water usage, etc. There exists a high potential for its applicability in waste heat recovery cycles, either as bottoming cycles for gas turbines in a combined cycle or for industrial waste heat recovery in process industries such as iron & steel, cement, paper, glass, textile, fertilizer and food manufacturing. Conventionally steam Rankine cycle is employed for the gas turbine and industrial waste heat recovery applications. The waste heat recovery from a coke oven plant in an iron & steel industry is considered in this paper due to the high temperature of the waste heat and the technological expertise that exists in the author’s company, which has supplied over 50 steam turbines/ power blocks across India for various steel plants. An effective comparison between steam Rankine cycle and sCO2 Brayton cycle is attempted with the vast experience of steam power block technology and extending the high pressure-high temperature steam turbine design practices to the sCO2 turbine while also introducing the design of sCO2 compressor. The paper begins with an analysis of sCO2 cycles, their configurations for waste heat recovery and its comparison to a working steam cycle producing 15 MW net power in a coke oven plant. The sCO2 turbomachinery design follows from the boundary conditions imposed by the cycle and iterated with the cycle analysis for design point convergence. The design of waste heat recovery heat exchanger and other heat exchangers of the sCO2 cycle are not in the scope of this analysis. The design emphasis is on the sCO2 compressor and turbine that make up the power block. This paper highlights the design of a sCO2 compressor and turbine beginning from the specific speed-specific diameter (Ns-Ds) charts, followed by the meanline design. Subsequently, a detailed performance map is generated. The relevance of this paper is underscored by the first of a kind design and comparative analysis of a Brayton sCO2 power block with a working Steam Power block for the waste heat recovery in the energy intensive iron and steel industry.

Abstract:
The paper evaluates the emerging coal gasification technology now operational in many parts of the world to produce electric power through Combined Cycle mode in the present coal dominated power scenario in India. The initiatives of United States Agency for International Development (USAID)-New Delhi, India together with an Indian utility National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) and supported by a consortium of experienced international agencies for feasibility study of commercial application of coal based IGCC technology for producing 100MWe in India are enumerated. India with a population of one billion, a fifth of the world’s population ranks sixth in the world in terms of energy demand. It has only about 0.4 percent of world’s natural gas which contributes only 10 percent to power generation as against 65% by coal in the present total installed capacity of 107000 MW. The estimated coal reserves in India of 211 billion tonnes are likely to last for about 150 years as against oil and gas reserves that will get depleted in less than 50 years. Notwithstanding the ongoing debate in India between LNG versus coal for emergence of a mature and economic future fuel for power generation in India, over 60% of the 100,000 MW power demand required in the next 10 years in India is expected to be provided on coal, USAID-New Delhi has commissioned under its expanded Green House Gas (GHG) Pollution Prevention Project, a feasibility study of the IGCC Power plant in India. Therefore, application of the coal gasification combined cycle process, an emerging technology for clean, efficient and low CO2 emission coal fuelled generation thro GE’s advanced H-system turbine and providing high operating efficiency of 43% would be appropriate to serve as a base technology for greenfield projects and as a repowering option for vintage coal fired plants totaling 25000 MW now operating over 30 years.

Abstract:
Requirement for higher turbine performance and lower costs has resulted in smaller lubrication and control fluid systems operating at higher cleanliness levels, thus requiring higher fluid flux and finer filtration levels. Triboelectric Charge (TEC) generation by fine filters and its eventual discharge is considered to be a source of lubricating fluid breakdown and the resulting formation of resinous byproducts. These fluid breakdown byproducts form deposits or ‘varnish’ on the metallic surfaces causing servo-valve stiction along with other adverse consequences. TEC generation occurs in fluid systems as a result of friction between the fluid and mainly the filtration media fibers. The friction causes charge separation between the filtration medium and the fluid, with the fluid oppositely charged to the filtration medium. The magnitude of charge generated depends on many interrelated factors, including the nature of the filter material and the fluid, fluid velocity, viscosity, conductivity and the contact area. The electrostatic discharge manifests itself in several ways, the most easily noticeable way being an audible clicking noise as the discharge of the accumulated electrostatic charge causes sparking internally within the system. In addition to lubricant degradation and varnish formation, the electrical charge can travel downstream with the fluid causing damage to system components, including the filter. There have been reports of heat exchanger damage, located downstream of the filters, due to the electrostatic charging of the fluid. The use of metal support meshes or other methods to dissipate the electrostatic charge to prevent its build-up in the filter cartridge may prevent the discharge within the filter assembly and the resulting filter damage, but it does not prevent the charging of the fluid, and the migration of the charge downstream causing damage to the fluid and the downstream components. In 2005 Pall Corporation introduced filter cartridges that mitigate charge generation and dissipate the small charge generated at its inception, thus offering the advantage of eliminating filter damage entirely, and significantly reducing the migration of the charge into the fluid and its associated damage to the fluid and the resulting varnish formation. This paper discusses the experience with the electrostatic charge dissipating filtration for the gas turbine lubrication application.
