Abstract:
A growing population, urbanization and an increase in the number of industries is causing an increase in sewage sludge (SS) that needs to be either beneficially used or disposed of. Application of SS to agricultural lands is a well-known practice but the plant available phosphate and phosphate fertilizer value of SS has been of concern. This is especially due to the wide variety of soils that SS is applied to and the different phosphate removal processes that sewage waste water undergoes at the water care works and the source used to produce SS. Abstract:
Low soil fertility has been identified to be among the major causes of low pasture quantity and quality. Scarcity of high quality forage mainly during the dry season threatens animal productivity in some areas of South Africa, thus the need for identifying livestock feed alternatives. Pigeon pea is a woody legume that has continually been an important shrub in agroforestry and can provide protein-rich livestock feed during times of shortage. Soil fertility to support the production of pigeon pea can be enhanced by application of fertilisers. Therefore, this study was carried out firstly, to de

Sewage sludge is the product from wastewater treatment that mostly is considered as a waste material. However, it contains several nutrients, especially phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen which are excellent fertilizers. The downside is the harmful content it also carries with pathogens, heavy metals and a variety of organic pollutants that in many cases have unknown effects on the ecosystem. A possible solution to this problem could be to pyrolyse the sewage sludge and by that decrease the levels of heavy metals and also render both pathogens and organic pollutants harmless. Sustainability has become a critical element in the way business strategies are designed. Many organisations have adopted best management practices and the corporate governance of modern companies have been aligned not only to look at profits but also to take into consideration the impacts that they have on people and on the planet. There has recently been a substantial acceptance towards renewable energy sources worldwide, however anaerobic digestion of bio-waste into bio-energy has been around for decades and has not seen the equivalent recognition in South Africa. Immense amounts of waste are generated daily by our society, and the management of these streams is a critical societal function. Part of this work is reusing and recycling materials with attractive properties, which is also an imperative step towards circular material flows. Although, the reuse of waste-based resources entails a conflict between efficient use of resources and minimal environmental toxicity, which hampers the reuse. The labeling of a resource as waste also makes using or trading the resource problematic, both regarding regulations, but also concerns from the society regarding

Abstract:
Biomass energy is currently the largest renewable contributor to global energy supply and there is increasing demand for bioenergy feedstock. Consequently, the production of purpose-grown woody bioenergy crops, such as short rotation coppice (SRC) willow, is expected to proliferate. Although the economic and environmental benefits associated with SRC willow production are well documented, systematic assessments of nutrient cycling within these plantations are rare. Treatments included level of N, stage of re-growth and season as variables in digestion trials using sheep and voluntary feed intake (VFI) trials using long yearling heifers in pens equipped with Calan gates. A strategy for beneficiation of wastewater streams from fissure and process water developed for a gold mine operation in the west of Johannesburg was tested for viability in a pilot study. The investigation was aimed at evaluating the compliance of the finally discharged effluent streams with the current Water Use Licence (WUL). The core of the water recovery process consisted of softening to remove divalent cationic species, followed by ion exchange processes employing Strong Acid Cationic (SAC) resins and Weak Acid Cationic (WAC) resins.
