Abstract:
Introduction: Ferulago angulata from the Apiaceae family, has high flavonoid content and is detected to have anti-nociceptive and anti-inflammatory effects. Objectives: In this study, we sought to determine the components of essential oil and to estimate total phenol and flavonoid contents of its various extracts. We also aimed to find out the anti-nociceptive and anti-inflammatory effects of essential oil, hydro-alcoholic and phenolic extracts of F. angulata aerial parts. Materials and Methods: The plant’s essential oil and extracts were prepared according to standard methods. Acetic acid, hot plate and formalin tests were used to investigate anti-nociceptive effects. Additionally, carrageenan and croton oil tests were used to evaluate anti-inflammatory effects. Results: Ferulago angulata aerial parts yielded 0.2% (v/w) yellowish essential oil. The gas chromatography/ mass spectrometry (GC-MS) of essential oil identified 82 compounds, which represented 98.9% of the essential oil. Thymol (7.9%), spathulenol (6.5%), trans-anethol (6.4%), myristicin (5.1%) and alpha-pinene (4.5%) were the main components. In acetic acid and formalin tests, the essential oil, hydro-alcoholic and phenolic extracts showed significant anti-nociceptive effects (P<0.001). In hot plate test, morphine which was used as standard drug, revealed significant anti-nociceptive effect while the plant extracts and essential oil were ineffective. High dose of the extracts and essential oil in croton oil test (P<0.001) and high dose of hydro-alcoholic and phenolic extracts in carrageenan test (P<0.05) reduced the inflammation. Conclusion: Ferulago angulata extracts and essential oil have anti-nociceptive and anti-inflammatory effects. However, further studies are needed to clarify their mechanism of actions.

Aim of this study was to investigate the antimicrobial properties of herbal plant essential oils (EOs) from selected Iranian plant species such as Ferulago angulata, Zataria multiflora, Cuminum cyminum, and Mentha longifolia against antibiotic-resistant Escherichia coli (E. coli) strains. For this purpose, the Escherichia coli strains, isolated from raw cow’s milk and local dairy products (yogurt, cream, whey, cheese, and confectionery products) collected from different areas of Hamedan province, Iran, were investigated for their resistance to antibiotics (i.e., streptomycin, tetracycline, gentamicin, chloramphenicol, ciprofloxacin, and cefixime). Thus, the E. coli strains were tested for their susceptibility to the above-mentioned essential oils. Regarding antibiotics, the E. coli strains were highly sensitive to ciprofloxacin. In relation to essential oils, the most effective antibacterial activity was observed with Zataria multiflora; also, the bacteria were semi-sensitive to Cuminum cyminum and Mentha longifolia essential oils. All strains were resistant to Ferulago angulata essential oil. According to the results, the essential oil of Zataria multiflora can be considered as a practical and alternative antibacterial strategy to inhibit the growth of multidrug-resistant E. coli of dairy origin.

Abstract:
In this study, the effects of Ferulago angulata extract on the growth, haematological, and immunological indices of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) fingerlings were evaluated. Basal diet was supplemented with 0 (control), 0.5, 1, and 2 g·kg-1 F. angulata and was randomly allocated to experimental fish of an initial average weight of 7.45 ± 0.02 g. After 8 weeks of experiment, the fish supplemented with F. angulata extract showed increased but non-significant (P > 0.05) growth performance. No significant differences were found between trial control groups in haematological indices such as red blood cell count, haematocrit, and haemoglobin, but there was a significant increase in white blood cells, lymphocytes, neutrophils and monocytes in the F. angulata extract groups (P < 0.05). Also, there were significant differences between the fish supplemented with dietary F. angulata extract and the control group regarding immunological indices, including immunoglobulin M, lysozyme, and classical and alternative complement pathway (P < 0.05). These findings suggest that the administration of F. angulata extract has a positive effect on the immunological indices and the immune system activity in rainbow trout fingerling.

Abstract:
Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease characterized by elevated blood glucose levels. Medicinal plant Ferulago angulata has anti-oxidant properties. The aim of the present research was to evaluate the effect of a hydroalcoholic extract of F. angulata on the blood glucose level and liver enzyme activity in diabetic male rats. Forty-eight male rats were randomly divided into eight groups, including normal and diabetic groups. Diabetes was induced by a single intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin at 40 mg·kg-1 body weight. Rats were treated with an intraperitoneal injection of the extract for three weeks. At the end of the experimental period, fasting blood samples were collected, and blood glucose and liver enzyme activity were measured. This study demonstrated that serum glucose levels in diabetic groups treated with F. angulata were significantly lower than those in diabetic rats (P < 0.001). Alanine aminotransferase levels in diabetic rats treated with F. angulata were significantly decreased compared to diabetic rats (P < 0.001). Aspartate aminotransferase levels in diabetic rats treated with 200 and 400 mg·kg-1 F. angulata were significantly decreased compared to diabetic rats (P < 0.001). No significant differences were observed in the serum levels of blood glucose and liver enzymes in the normal group treated with different doses of the extract. These results show that the hydroalcoholic extract of F. angulata might be effective in the treatment of diabetes and consequently alleviate the liver damage caused by streptozotocin-induced diabetes mellitus. This effect might be due to the presence of flavonoids and their antioxidant features.

Hydro-distillated essential oils (EO) antioxidant activity of three endemic medicinal plants of Iran namely, Heracleum lasiopetalum Boiss., Kelussia odoratissima Mozaff., and Ferulago angulata (Schlecht.) Boiss were studied. The results indicated that the major components of the EOs were 2-ethylhexyl acetate (34.5%), n-octanol (6.5%), and hexanol (5.1%) for H. lasiopetalum fruits; Z-?-ocimene (20.5), ?-pinene (11.6%), and ?-phellandrene (9.3) for F. angulata aerial parts; ?-pinene (20.1%), 1,8-cineole (18.2%), and Zligustilide (15.5%) for K. odoratissima aerial parts. This study aimed to incorporate the herbal essential oils (Ziziphora tenuior L. (Z. tenuior), Ferulago angulata (F. angulata), and Bunium persicum (B. persicum)) all in three levels (5, 7, and 10% w/w) and tertiary butyl hydroquinone (100, 200, and 300 ppm) to evaluate the oxidation stability of Iranian animal oil (IAO). Z. tenuior, F. angulata, and B. persicum (5, 7, and 10% w/w) and tertiary butyl hydroquinone (100, 200, and 300 ppm) were added to IAO. The physicochemical properties and color analysis, and sensory characteristics (odor, taste, rancidity, and overall acceptability) of the treatments were investigated on days 0, 7, 14, 21, and 28. The results showed that increasing the amounts of Z. tenuior, F. angulata, and B. persicum was associated with reducing acid, peroxide, and thiobarbituric acid values. It also lowered brightness and yellowness while the oxidative stability of the IAO significantly was increasing. It was concluded that the incorporation of B. persicum had the highest effectiveness regarding the proposed criteria with the least effect on sensory properties.

Abstract:
Background: Ferulago angulata (Schltdl.) Boiss. is a herbaceous perennial plant distributed in Iran, Turkey and Iraq. The aromatic aerial parts of this plant are commonly used as antiseptic, sedative, wound healing, analgesic and food additive. Methods: Column chromatography on silica gel (normal phase and RP-18) and Sephadex LH-20, along with recrystallization method were applied to isolation of the phytochemicals extracted from F. angulata fruits. The structures of the isolated compounds were characterized by 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR spectral analysis. Chemical composition of the fruits essential oil obtained by hydrodistillation (HD) and steam distillation (SD) methods were also analyzed using GC-MS technique. Results: Six coumarin derivatives; suberosin (1), isoimperatorin (2), imperatorin (3), bergapten (4), tamarin (5) and suberenol (6), a monoterpene glycoside; verbenone-5-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (7), together with five flavonol-3-O-glycosides; isorhamnetin-3-O-rutinoside (narcissin) (8), kaempferol-3-O-rutinoside (nicotiflorin) (9), quercetin-3-O-rutinoside (rutin) (10), isorhamnetin-3-O-β-D-glucuronide (11), isorhamnetin-3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (12) were isolated from F. angulata fruits. Essential oil extraction using HD and SD methods afforded colorless oils in 4.1 and 1.8% (v/w) yields, respectively. A total of 28 compounds were identified in essential oils, of which (Z)-β-ocimene (HD; 48.97%, SD; 50.02%), α-pinene (HD; 21.32%, SD; 23.06%) and allo-ocimene (HD; 6.98%, SD; 5.61%) were the main compounds. Conclusion: This study introduces F. angulata fruits as a new source of coumarin derivatives and flavonoid glycosides. The presence of these compounds with known biological properties provides more medicinal potentials for the fruits of F. angulata. The present study also reports hydrodistillation, as an efficient method for extraction of essential oil from these aromatic fruits.

Abstract:
The oxidation rate and overall sensory acceptability of Iranian animal oil (IAO) during storage were evaluated after adding the bioactive essential oils extracted from medicinal herbs of Ziziphora tenuior, Ferulago angulata, and Bunium persicum. Results showed that the most dominant chemical constituents in Z. tenuior, F. angulata, and B. persicum essential oils were pulegone (12.77%), ferulagon (14.97%), and (+)-trans-carveol (57.70%), respectively. IAO contained more saturated fatty acids (67.43%, mainly palmitic and myristic acids) than unsaturated (32.27%, mostly oleic acid) ones. B. persicum essential oil compared to the other two oils significantly had more total flavonoid (1.08 mg quercetin equivalent/g), phenolic (123.2 mg GAE/g), carotenoid (591.31 mg/kg), and chlorophyll (24.32 mg/kg) contents. A significant dose-dependent increase in the overall sensory acceptability of IAO was found by increasing the concentration of B. persicum essential oil. Similar to tertiary butyl hydroquinone, the oil blend of IAO+10% B. persicum essential oil obtained the maximum overall sensory acceptability scores during 28 d cold storage due to the remarkable in vitro DPPH inhibition (83.45%) and ferric-reducing power (0.754 at Å700nm). A much slower formation rate in primary and secondary oxidation compounds in IAO rich in B. persicum essential oil during the storage was associated with the overall sensory acceptability data ( p < 0.01 , r = 0.951). Thus, this bioactive additive as a bio-preservative may well stabilize crude oils and emulsions.

Abstract:
Abstract Chavil (Ferulago angulata) extract (CE) and microencapsulated chavil extract (MCE) were added to UF- Feta-type Cheese. The aim of this study was to comprising CE and MCE on physicochemical and microbiological properties in cheese. The scanning electron microscope images demonstrate the MCE had elliptical shape. The average size diameter curve of the MCE revealed bimodal distribution with two peaks (1541 and 2222 nm) separately. The hardness value of MCE cheese (212.83 ± 17.63 g) was lower than that of CE (343.67 ± 25.53 g) because of canola oil used in the microencapsulation process. The MCE-cheese showed lower values of acidity (1.67%) in comparison with CE-cheese (1.87%). The viable numbers of Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactococcus lactis were equal among the samples (4.6–4.9 log10 CFU/g respectively). The acid degree value of MCE (2.07 ± 0.21%) and CE (1.83 ± 0.25%) cheese were nearly equal at the end of storage time.

Abstract:
Introduction: Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is an age-dependent neurodegenerative disorder and major cause of mortality in the elderly. AD has a complex pathophysiology and needs new multi-targeted compounds to halt the disease progression through several mechanisms. Medicinal plants contain various compounds with heterogeneous pharmacological effects, therefore are a good source. The aim of this study was to evaluate the protective effect of total extracts of Sanguisorba minor and Ferulago angulata on beta-amyloid (Aβ)-induced toxicity in primary neural cell culture.Methods: Cerebellar granule neurons (CGNs) were cultured according to standard protocols. The cultured neurons were incubated with Aβ alone or in combination with different concentrations of extracts for 24 hours. Cell viability was measured by methylthiazolyldiphenyl-tetrazolium (MTT) assay. In addition acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity and oxidative stress markers were measured after incubation. Also, the effects of different concentrations of the extracts on AChE activity of the cultured neurons were investigated. For measuring the acute toxicity of the extract, LD50 was estimated by limit test.Results: Both extracts could protect CGNs against Aβ-induced cell death. Aβ-induced oxidative stress and increase of AChE activity were ameliorated by both extracts. S. minor extract dose-dependently reduced AChE activity in cultured CGNs. LD50 of both extracts was estimated above 2000 mg/kg and considered as safe.Conclusion: Both studied extracts protected CGNs against Aβ-induced toxicity by ameliorating oxidative stress mechanism. According to these results, these extracts are recommended for further investigation in AD treatment.
