Abstract:
Mycetoma is a rare and neglected tropical disease among children. Extrapodal forms, in particular the buttock, are serious because they expose to visceral extension. We are reporting an observation remarkable for its clinical tumor presentation in a child. An 11-year-old boy was admitted at to the dermatology department for a buttock tumor that has been evolving for 2 years. Physical examination showed a multinodular, polyfistulized, and inflammatory tumor emitting red granules located in the buttocks. Mycological examination isolated Actinomadure pelletieri that confirms the diagnosis of actinomicotic mycetoma. The evolution, after a two-year follow-up, was positive under antibiotic therapy combining cotrimoxazol, clavulanic acid amoxicillin and streptomycin. Our observation is specific by the occurrence of a pseudotumoral actinomycotic buttock mycetoma in a child, the diagnostic delay and the favorable evolution without recurrence after a follow-up of 24-month.

Abstract:
The discovery in 2008 of the iron-based superconductors opened a new field of investigation of high-temperature superconductivity. In particular, the nematic phase of these materials may play a major role in the mecanism of superconductivity. We studied the FeSe compound using Raman spectroscopy, at ambient pressure and under hydrostatic pressure. This material does not display any static magnetic order at ambient pressure and is therefore an excellent choice to study the nematic order. We observed the charge nematic fluctuations. Their evolution in the tetragonal phase proves the existence of an electronic nematic instability, which drives the structural transition. In the orthorhombic phase, the behaviour of the phonons underlines the role of the spin-phonon coupling in the nematic transition. Besides, the shape of the superconducting Raman response is compatible with the existence of two s-wave gaps, one of which is anisotropic. Under hydrostatic pressure, the nematic fluctuations reduce rapidly. The associated electronic quantum critical point is situated at very low pressure, just before the appearance of magnetic order. The nematic fluctuations completely disappear around 2 GPa, when the structural transition changes from second order to first order. An anomaly of the phonons also occurs close to this pressure, which indicates a modification of the electronic structure of the system. Our measurements additionally reveal the existence of a pseudogap. Its temperature of appearance reduces significantly simultaneously to the disappearance of magnetic order, when the critical temperature of superconductivity reaches its maximum. Finally, the Raman response in the superconducting state at 7.8 GPa shows a clear signature of a full gap

Abstract:
In this thesis, the microwave electrodynamic properties of stoichiometric FeSe are measured by a cavity perturbation technique based on a 940 MHz loop-gap resonator. Measurements surprisingly show, for the first time, that c-axis conductivity in stoichiometric FeSe superconductors exhibits a broad peak in its temperature-dependence, a phenomenon which was only observed for in-plane electrodynamics in the cuprates. This result implies that the charge transfer between FeSe-planes is enhanced by the development of long transport quasiparticle lifetimes below Tc.

Robinson, Brooklyn D. "Playing the Fool: Feste and Twelfth Night." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2016. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/scripps_theses/865.

Abstract:
Twelfth Night does not end with the acceptance and consummation of these “alternative couples.” Instead, the reveal of the twins has a clarifying effect and the characters are returned to the partner who is considered socially acceptable. The final relationships are heterosexual matches that do not stray from class or any other societal confines. Indeed, the story serves to reinforce common standards equating alternative love with madness and proper love with lucidity. Standing outside of the couplings are only bachelor men: Antonio, Sir Andrew, Feste and Orsino’s pages. In effect, these men are desexualized without romantic counterparts. While they are deemed outcasts in Illyria, one character in particular stands to gain from this seeming lack of sexuality and outsider status: the clown, Feste. Gender and power find clarification through the character of Feste because he is afforded all of the privileges of a male in a patriarchal society and in order to analyze him, his positionality within the function and structure of the story must be acknowledged. Usually the character of Viola holds this position in scholarship, but the possibility of Feste played by a female actor introduces similar themes of cross-gender disguise while decoding the heteronormative standards reinforced by the conclusion of the play.

Abstract:
A recent trend in designing naval ships is to improve performance through using more electric equipment. The reliability and quality of the onboard electric power, therefore, becomes critical as the ship functionality would entirely depend on its availability. This paper investigates the possibility of using Flywheel Energy Storage Systems (FESS), similar to those earlier developed for commercial applications, to address issues related to onboard power supplies. A design of a FESS for onboard power backup and railroad electrical stations is presented. The FESSs power output parameters are 500kWx30sec in high-duty mode and up to 2MW in pulse mode. High power output is one of the main advantages of FESS over commercially available electrochemical batteries. The other advantages include essentially an unlimited number of charge/discharge cycles, observable state of charge and environmental friendliness. Designs of the main FESS components are discussed: low-loss magnetic bearings, an energy-storage hub, a high-efficiency motor/generator and power electronics.

Abstract:
Abstract Flywheel energy storage systems (FESS) are an excellent short duration grid energy storage solution; however, their cost and energy storage capacity are typical barriers to their widespread commercialization. FESS can be designed by optimizing the shape of the flywheel rotor, choice of rotor material, operating speed and rotor radius. This study optimizes the flywheel rotor shape at various operating speeds and outer radii. It is found that the energy capacity of the rotor can be improved by choosing an ideal combination of operating speed and rotor radius. Our earlier work showed that including the cost of the FESS as an optimization objective could significantly alter the FESS design [1]. Therefore, the cost effectiveness of the FESS is also studied by comparing rotors made from different materials on an energy-per-cost basis, while the cost ratio of the materials is varied.

Abstract:
Abstract One of the current technologies widely used to extract the earth’s renewable energy is solar modules, which harness energy from the sun; however, their operating conditions and their energy storage capacities vary greatly under different weather conditions. The high-speed Flywheel Energy Storage System (FESS) presents a promising prospective solution for solar energy storage and utilization. Accurately modeling FESS can lead to its efficient design and control. In this paper, a fully integrated FESS, with comprehensive photovoltaic (PV) system, has been modeled to simulate the overall energy harvesting capabilities, power output, and efficiency. The solar module has been modeled using the one-diode solar cell model technique to predict the overall system efficiency and determine the most efficient time of day for switching between the FESS’s charging (morning time) and discharging mode (night time). To validate the developed model using experimental data, four 250 Wp Ankara Solar PV modules and a Balance of System (BOS) were installed. The solar irradiance, wind speed, cell temperature, solar module, FESS output voltage and current were logged during the system’s operation. The theoretical model predicted that the energy output for the test day was 4.80 kWh, while the experimental analysis showed that the solar modules produced 4.68 kWh, only 2.5% percentage difference. The theoretical and experimental power curves followed the same trends throughout the day, which assures that the model could accurately predict the daily energy output of the solar array. The efficiency of the solar module was determined to be 15.3%. The solar module simulation serves as a repeatable replication of the actual solar module source, which enables convenient, low-cost estimation of the solar module-FESS system under different environmental conditions. The developed solar module was integrated with a brushless DC motor and flywheel models to simulate the FESS response. Relative to the input solar energy input of 4.68 kWh, the daily energy stored in a flywheel was 3.51 kWh, giving the overall solar-module-FESS system an efficiency of 74.7%. After the experimental setup completion of FESS, the integrated solar module-FESS model will be tested for its overall power output and efficiency against the traditional solar module-battery-system.

Abstract:
The UKMOD has an objective to improve the efficiency and flexibility associated with the integration of naval electrical systems into both new and existing platforms. A more specific challenge for the MOD is in the de-risking of the integration of future pulse and stochastic loads such as Laser Directed Energy Weapons. To address this the Power Networks Demonstration Centre (PNDC) naval research programme is focused towards understanding and resolving the associated future power system requirements. To address these challenges, the UK MOD and the PNDC have worked collaboratively to develop a 540kVA Power Hardware in the Loop (PHIL) testing facility. For the UK MOD this supports the “UK-US Advanced Electric Power and Propulsion Project Arrangement (AEP3).” This testing facility has been used to explore the capabilities of PHIL testing and evaluate a Flywheel Energy Storage System (FESS) in a notional ship power system environment. This testing provided an opportunity to develop and further validate the capability of the PHIL platform for continued marine power system research. This paper presents on the results from PHIL testing of the FESS at PNDC, which involved both characterisation and interfacing the FESS within a simulated ship power system. The characterisation tests involved evaluating the: response to step changes in current reference; frequency and impedance characteristics; and response during uncontrolled discharge. The ship power system testing involved interfacing the FESS to a simulated real time notional ship power system model and evaluating the response of the FESS and the impact on the ship power system under a range of different operational scenarios. This paper also discuss the links between FESS characterisation testing and the development of the energy management system implemented in the real time model. This control system was developed to schedule operation of the FESS state (charging, discharging and idle) with the other simulated generation sources (the active front end and battery storage) and with the loads within the ship power system model. Finally, this paper highlights how the testing at PNDC has also supported the comparison and validation of previous FESS testing at Florida State University’s Centre Advanced Power Systems (FSU CAPS) facility, and how the combined efforts help to collectively de-risk future load Total Ship Integration and Evolving Intelligent Platforms in both UK and US programmes via the AEP3 PA.

Abstract:
This paper presents a use of the complex coordinates (z = x + iy) for identifying a linear dynamic model of a flywheel energy storage system (FESS). The complex coordinate system transformation yields a compact linear system model, and eliminates the skew-symmetric gyroscopic elements in equation of motion. The paper presents some basic results from linear systems theory using states that are represented by complex variables. In particular, it is shown that the concepts such as controllability and observability can be applied to this system representation. In addition, it is shown that the Eigensystem Realization Algorithm (ERA) can also be applied to these systems. The paper also demonstrates the efficacy of the proposed identification technique by application to an actual FESS.
