Abstract:

Abstract:
<p>Determination of actual water surface is required for design of hydraulic structures, reservoirs, flood plain management, and flood forecasting. Classical approach of analyzing the river flow using one dimensional flow analysis cannot provide the accurate information of water surface for different return period floods. So, both 1D and 2D steady surface flow analysis in prismatic channel and non-prismatic channel were done using models like HEC-RAS, FESWMS-2DH, GIS, and HECGEORAS to compare the results and recommended to select the best among these two flow analyses. Analysis of result showed that in prismatic channel, the water surface elevations obtained from 1D and 2D steady flow analysis for discharge Q=10cft/s were almost similar with maximum variation of 0.33ft. But in case of non-prismatic channel, the results of water surface elevations from 1D and 2D steady flow analysis for discharge Q = 5000cft/s and 9430cft/s were not similar and the maximum variation of 1.36ft and 1.75ft were found for two discharges respectively. 1D steady flow analysis is acceptable for prismatic channel except at bend which may require 2D analysis. But flow in non-prismatic channel requires 2D steady flow analysis for precise water surface elevation.</p><p><strong>Journal of Advanced College of Engineering and Management,</strong> Vol. 2, 2016, Page: 15-30 </p>

Abstract:
By using a scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) detector, the information limit for the Gemini®FESEMs can be extended beyond the nanometer range. A resolution of 0.8 nm at 30kV is now readily attainable and gives additional nanoscale information compared to conventional SEM detectors. The resolving power of the combined FESEM/STEM can be used to save processing time on TEM systems and enables high sample throughput for quality assurance applications and standard type measurements. The transmission mode of the FESEM has the advantages of avoiding chromatic aberration, allowing for a larger aperture so that higher transmission, signal-to-noise ratio and contrast enhancement due to the lower electron energy (10 - 30kV) can be obtained.

Abstract:
The Field Emission SEM was introduced to improve imaging resolution available with conventional SEMs with a tungsten source. Thermal assisted or Schottky Field Emission SEMs were introduced in s the nineties by a number of companies as a stable source to overcome the beam instability of the cold FESEMs introduced earlier. The Gemini® based Field Emission SEM launched by Zeiss 12 years ago has been designed from the beginning as a high stability FESEM with a relatively large multi-ported chamber. The drive to develop Gemini® technology was the need for a FESEM capable of ultra-high resolution performance over the entire accelerating voltage range that also possessed the flexibility needed for a wide range of analytical applications.

Abstract:
A field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) is a complex scanning electron microscope with ultra-high-resolution image scanning, instant printing, and output storage capabilities. FESEMs have been widely used in fields such as materials science, biology, and medical science. However, owing to the balance between resolution and field of view (FOV), when locating a target using an FESEM, it is difficult to view specific details in an image with a large FOV and high resolution simultaneously. This paper presents a deep neural network to realize super-resolution of an FESEM image. This technology can effectively improve the resolution of the acquired image without changing the physical structure of the FESEM, thus resolving the constraint problem between the resolution and FOV. Experimental results show that the apply of a deep neural network only requires a single image acquired by an FESEM to be the input. A higher resolution image with a large FOV and excellent noise reduction is obtained within a short period of time. To verify the effect of the model numerically, we evaluated the image quality by using the peak signal-to-noise ratio value and structural similarity index value, which can reach 26.88 dB and 0.7740, respectively. We believe that this technology will improve the quality of FESEM imaging and be of significance in various application fields.

Abstract:
Abstract. We describe FESOM-C, the coastal branch of the Finite-volumE Sea ice – Ocean Model (FESOM2), which shares with FESOM2 many numerical aspects, in particular its finite-volume cell-vertex discretization. Its dynamical core differs in the implementation of time stepping, the use of a terrain-following vertical coordinate, and the formulation for hybrid meshes composed of triangles and quads. The first two distinctions were critical for coding FESOM-C as an independent branch. The hybrid mesh capability improves numerical efficiency, since quadrilateral cells have fewer edges than triangular cells. They do not suffer from spurious inertial modes of the triangular cell-vertex discretization and need less dissipation. The hybrid mesh capability allows one to use quasi-quadrilateral unstructured meshes, with triangular cells included only to join quadrilateral patches of different resolution or instead of strongly deformed quadrilateral cells. The description of the model numerical part is complemented by test cases illustrating the model performance.

Abstract:
In this study we compared the ability of conventional and field-emission scanning-electron-microscopy (FESEM) and energy-dispersive analysis of X-rays (EDX) to visualise and map inorganic nano and microparticles in Southern pine (Pinus sp.) treated with an aqueous dispersion of micronised copper-carbonate and iron oxide. Conventional SEM-EDX was able to detect areas of the wood microstructure that contained higher concentrations of copper and iron, but EDX maps were affected by drift and specimens suffered beam damage. The high brightness of the FESEM's electron beam at low accelerating voltages reduced beam damage and helped when mapping the distribution of copper and iron particles. The clarity of EDX maps was further improved by using drift-correction software and by mapping low energy X-rays. FESEM-EDX was able to resolve individual copper and iron microparticles. We conclude that FESEM-EDX shows promise as a means of resolving and mapping the distribution of inorganic metal particles in wood and that this may lead to greater use of the technology as interest in the treatment of wood with inorganic nano and microparticles grows.

Abstract:
By combining a conical type field emission gun and an auto gain controlled noise cancelling system, we have developed three types of digital FESEMs equipped with a digital imaging processor and three different sized specimen chambers each with a stage. It is known that when a cold field emission gun (C-FEG) with a W (310) single crystal tip is used at a vacuum pressure of 10-10 torr, the emission current constantly fluctuates by 5 to 10% due to the adsorbed gas, etc. on the tip surface.Since the probe current in an FESEM equipped with this C-FEG fluctuates to the same extent, the noise caused by emission current fluctuation (emission noise) appears on secondary electron images (SEI) and backscattered electron images (BEI).In order to eliminate emission noise, an aperture (noise cancelling aperture or N/C aperture) installed under the C-FEG detects emission current fluctuation and inputs it to the differential amplifier of the video amplifier system for SEI or BEI on conventional FESEMs.With FESEMs, however, when the accelerating voltage is change in the range from 0.5 to 30 kV, the virtual source of an FEG using Butler type electrodes moves several tens of centimeters on the optical axis. Moreover, the probe current is changed from 10-13 to 10-10 A by changing the excitation current of the condenser lens. For these two reasons, there have been adopted such methods as installing an N/C aperture in two positions (under the C-FEG and at the objective lens aperture position) and controlling the amplifier value of the noise cancelling system and condenser lens excitation by ROM data.

Abstract:
Abstract. An increasing number of Southern Ocean models now include Antarctic ice-shelf cavities, and simulate thermodynamics at the ice-shelf/ocean interface. This adds another level of complexity to Southern Ocean simulations, as ice shelves interact directly with the ocean and indirectly with sea ice. Here, we present the first model intercomparison and evaluation of present-day ocean/sea-ice/ice-shelf interactions, as simulated by two models: a circumpolar Antarctic configuration of MetROMS (ROMS: Regional Ocean Modelling System coupled to CICE: Community Ice CodE) and the global model FESOM (Finite Element Sea-ice Ocean Model), where the latter is run at two different levels of horizontal resolution. From a circumpolar Antarctic perspective, we compare and evaluate simulated ice-shelf basal melting and sub-ice-shelf circulation, as well as sea-ice properties and Southern Ocean water mass characteristics as they influence the sub-ice-shelf processes. Despite their differing numerical methods, the two models produce broadly similar results and share similar biases in many cases. Both models reproduce many key features of observations but struggle to reproduce others, such as the high melt rates observed in the small warm-cavity ice shelves of the Amundsen and Bellingshausen seas. Several differences in model design show a particular influence on the simulations. For example, FESOM's greater topographic smoothing can alter the geometry of some ice-shelf cavities enough to affect their melt rates; this improves at higher resolution, since less smoothing is required. In the interior Southern Ocean, the vertical coordinate system affects the degree of water mass erosion due to spurious diapycnal mixing, with MetROMS' terrain-following coordinate leading to more erosion than FESOM's z coordinate. Finally, increased horizontal resolution in FESOM leads to higher basal melt rates for small ice shelves, through a combination of stronger circulation and small-scale intrusions of warm water from offshore.

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractChristmas is a celebration with a strong social radiance. It is a vehicle for political positions and debates and thus shows itself to be a controversial cosmos of significance. A cosmos with history that is not as old as is often claimed – the origin of the festival as we know it today lies in the 19th century. Since then, Christmas has developed into a global festival in which many different people take part. But Christmas is not only unifying, it is also exclusive and creates cultural differences. The aim of the text is to look at the festival in its historical genesis and to critically illuminate Christmas as an ambivalent social phenomenon.

Abstract:
BackgroundElectron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) is a very powerful analysis technique to understand the crystallography of a sample in the SEM. Typically, a high beam current is needed to obtain good results because of inefficient collection of the patterns. In W-filament SEM's, the high beam current necessitates a large spot size and requisite low image resolution. The large beam current can also be a source of problems for insulating samples or sample mounts by causing charging and the resulting image drift. To reduce the spot size with adequate beam currents for imaging, field-emission (FE) guns are used. For most FESEM's, the beam current is markedly reduced from that produced by W-filament instruments. Even though the image resolution is better, the EBSD performance tends to suffer at low beam currents for standard hardware configurations. To regain the performance of a comparable W-filament system, the EBSD hardware should be changed for the low beam current operation. This paper will address the hardware considerations for low beam current applications.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract. Version 2 of the unstructured-mesh Finite-Element Sea ice–Ocean circulation Model (FESOM) is presented. It builds upon FESOM1.4 (Wang et al., 2014) but differs by its dynamical core (finite volumes instead of finite elements), and is formulated using the arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) vertical coordinate, which increases model flexibility. The model inherits the framework and sea ice model from the previous version, which minimizes the efforts needed from a user to switch from one version to the other. The ocean states simulated with FESOM1.4 and FESOM2.0 driven by CORE-II forcing are compared on a mesh used for the CORE-II intercomparison project. Additionally, the performance on an eddy-permitting mesh with uniform resolution is discussed. The new version improves the numerical efficiency of FESOM in terms of CPU time by at least 3 times while retaining its fidelity in simulating sea ice and the ocean. From this it is argued that FESOM2.0 provides a major step forward in establishing unstructured-mesh models as valuable tools in climate research.
