Abstract:
The physiological, metabolic, and anatomical properties of fast- and slow-twitch skeletal muscle fibers are detailed. How the proportions of different types of muscle fibers in a muscle are matched to the functions of that muscle is described. The important concept of the motor unit consisting of the motoneuron and all the muscle fibers it innervates is introduced. The roles of warm-up, orderly recruitment, and tetanus in determining muscle force are elaborated. Examples of muscle fiber recruitment and de-recruitment during natural movements before and after weight-lifting exercise are presented. The large effects of small changes in motoneuron discharge on resulting muscle tension are discussed in the context of exercise and disease. Differences between extraocular and other skeletal muscles in composition and innervation have clinical implications. Finally, students are introduced to electromyography, a minimally invasive clinical test that can be used to assess motor unit function and reveal fibrillations.

Abstract:
How can one conceptualize the new ‘mission-oriented’ role assumed by national development banks (NDBs)? The standard ‘market failure’ perspective provides only a partial and limited justification for what NDBs do and does not explain historical and contemporary developments. This chapter combines insights from Keynes, Minsky, Schumpeter, and Polanyi (and works in their tradition) to review the old and new roles of NDBs. It discusses these roles taking into account two important dimensions: (i) the relationship between risks and rewards, and (ii) the criticisms that NDBs crowd out private investments. It shows that the roles typically performed by NDBs go beyond that of the state as ‘market fixer’ to assume that of market shaper and creator.

Abstract:
The cerebellum uses sensory feedback and information about intended actions to ensure coordinated and smooth movements despite changing conditions. An analogy between the cerebellum and an orchestral conductor is elaborated. The cerebellum’s involvement in forming and executing motor memories is presented. Cerebellar circuits through the cerebellar cortex and deep nuclei and the dependence of cerebellar learning on climbing fiber input to Purkinje cells are briefly described. Sensory reafference and motor efference copy are defined and their roles in coordinating movement introduced. Cerebellar symptoms including ataxia, dysmetria and dysdiadochokinesia, are discussed and a possible model for dysmetria is considered. The specific inputs to and outputs from the vermis, paravermis, and lateral lobes are detailed in a description of canonical cerebellar loops. Finally, evidence that the cerebellum is involved in modulating nonmotor functions such as language, affect, social cognition, and visceral control is presented for the reader’s consideration.

Abstract:
Beginning 4,000 or more years ago in the U.S. Southwest and Mexican Northwest, the most varied and sustained interactions between regional inhabitants and the plants of their environments took place within the context of agricultural economies. Even though a recurrent paradigm portrays the Southwest/Northwest as harsh and agriculturally marginal, the region is rich in the archaeological legacy of Indigenous cultivators who produced harvests over three and a half millennia. In recent decades, a finer focus on analytical details, as well as broader comparative approaches to the archaeological record of plants, has expanded the roster of regional crops and culturally enhanced resources, illuminated the nature and scope of culturally modified environments, and explored the roles of plants in a range of economic and social transactions.

Fuglsang-Frederiksen, Anders, Kirsten Pugdahl, and Hatice Tankisi. Quantitative electromyography. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199688395.003.0008.

Abstract:
Several quantitative electromyography (QEMG) methods are used for diagnosing and monitoring in patients with neuromuscular disorders. At weak effort of the muscle, motor unit potential (MUP) analyses as individual MUP, multi-MUP, and macro-EMG are diagnostically sensitive and well tested. At higher effort of the muscle, interference pattern analyses such as the turns amplitude analysis are also diagnostically sensitive. Other potential diagnostic methods are power spectrum analysis, muscle fibre conduction velocity analysis, and some surface EMG methods. In patients with myopathy, QEMG has an important role in the diagnosis as a supplement to blood tests, muscle biopsy, and genetic testing. In patients with neurogenic disorders such as anterior horn cell disorders, peripheral nerve lesions, or polyneuropathy, QEMG has important roles in characterizing the lesion and differential diagnosis. Furthermore, QEMG may be useful in the examination of patients with neuromuscular transmission failure, critical illness disorders, and in treatment of dystonic muscle with botulinum toxin.
