Abstract:

Abstract:
The latex of the common fig (Ficus carica) contains a mixture of at least five cysteine proteases commonly known as ficins (EC 3.4.22.3). Four of these proteases were purified to homogeneity and crystals were obtained in a variety of conditions. The four ficin (iso)forms appear in ten different crystal forms. All diffracted to better than 2.10 Å resolution and for each form at least one crystal form diffracted to 1.60 Å resolution or higher. Ficin (iso)forms B and C share a common crystal form, suggesting close sequence and structural similarity. The latter diffracted to a resolution of 1.20 Å and belonged to space groupP3121 orP3221, with unit-cell parametersa=b= 88.9,c= 55.9 Å.

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractThis article discusses the manner in which Ficino employs the figure of Pythagoras and various aspects of the Pythagorean tradition in the philosophical areas of psychology, moral philosophy, and ontology. It also argues that the figure of Pythagoras as prophet was particularly appealing to a Ficino situated in the cultural environment of late fifteenth-century Florence. Text, culture, and ideology interacted in a complex way: spurred on by his early appreciation of Iamblichus's soteriological presentation of Pythagoras, Ficino helped create an ideology in Florence which was receptive to a prophetic figure. The piece thus suggests that Ficino viewed a certain segment of the history of thought through late ancient, Iamblichean eyes.

AbstractIt is a common understanding in the civilized world that we should protect our environment from further damage, no matter upon what kind of political or ideological background this understanding is based or upon what kind of development level. 1 In the academic field, people are more interested in discussing HOW to protect our environment. We all generally agree that this is also a very important issue, because the methods and ways people take in environmental protection do not only re flect their perspectives in their understanding in protecting environment, but also provide us with an ef ficient and economical ways to do so. In order to achieve this academic object, the exchange of academic ideas and information and a comparative study is of great signi ficance. This article, therefore, is an attempt promote this kind of exchange and comparison.

Marsilio Ficino is well known for his efforts to expand the philosophical canon of his time. He exhibited great interest in Platonism and Neoplatonism, but also endeavoured to recover understudied philosophical traditions of the ancient world. In his Theologia platonica de immortalitate animorum, he commented on the Presocratics. Ficino thought of the Presocratics as authorities and possessors of undisputed wisdom. This article seeks to explore the way in which Ficino treated the philosophy of Heraclitus in the Theologia platonica in order to formulate his own philosophical ideas.

Abstract:
To investigate the effects of ficin on biofilm formation of conditionally cariogenic Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans). Biomass and metabolic activity of biofilm were assessed using crystal violet assay, colony-forming unit (CFU) counting, and MTT assay. Extracellular polysaccharide (EPS) synthesis was displayed by SEM imaging, bacteria/EPS staining, and anthrone method while acid production was revealed by lactic acid assay. Growth curve and live/dead bacterial staining were conducted to monitor bacterial growth state in both planktonic and biofilm form. Total protein and extracellular proteins of S. mutans biofilm were analyzed by protein/bacterial staining and sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), severally. qRT-PCR was conducted to detect acid production, acid tolerance, and biofilm formation associated genes. Crystal violet assay, CFU counting, and MTT assay showed that the suppression effect of ficin on S. mutans biofilm formation was concentration dependent. 4 mg/mL ficin had significant inhibitory effect on S. mutans biofilm formation including biomass, metabolic activity, EPS synthesis, and lactic acid production ( p < 0.05 ). The growth curves from 0 mg/mL to 4 mg/mL ficin were aligned with each other. There was no significant difference among different ficin groups in terms of live/dead bacterial staining result ( p > 0.05 ). Protein/bacterial staining outcome indicated that ficin inhibit both total protein and biofilm formation during the biofilm development. There were more relatively small molecular weight protein bands in extracellular proteins of 4 mg/mL ficin group when compared with the control. Generally, ficin could inhibit biofilm formation and reduce cariogenic virulence of S. mutans effectively in vitro; thus, it could be a potential anticaries agent.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Proteolytic enzymes from vegetal origin have been largely employed in several studies due to its capacity to cleave antibodies into specific fragments, which for some applications, could be more relevant than the immunoglobulin molecule itself. Beyond that, they could be used directley into a patient playing the role of a \"drug\" (There are examples of enzyme application in studies of several pathologies such as autoimmune, traumatic and neurological diseases), in the aid of clinical techniques for antibodies detection and as tools for serum production. Despite the fact that those enzymes have been of great importance and large applicability, its ease of access and ubiquity in nature, the protease mode of action is still not fully understood. Ficin (found in Fig trees) and Bromelain (found in pineapples) are, for example, enzymes that are being explored in an array of articles and demonstrate the capacity to digest antibodies. In this project, we propose to verify the activity of such enzymes from vegetal origins over the antibodies obtained from equines in the production of immunoreactive fragments of immunoglobulin, lowering the potential risk of animal origin diseases transmission. It is hoped that the fragments generated can contribute to studies of clinical level and the production of proper serum against toxins present in animal poisons. Plasma samples were obtained from horse immunization with a venon \"pool\" from Bothrops snakes at Instituto Butantan. These antibodies were purified using caprilic acid, digested by bromelain or ficin and purified again using chromatographic techniques. The results indicate the formation of an immunoglobulin fragment - F(ab)\'2, however, more experiments are needed to optimize the digestive process in order to improve the reaction yield.

Abstract:
The publication in 1492 of the first Latin translation by Ficino of the Enneads and his monumental accompanying commentary marks the return of Plotinus in the West. Ficino's working manuscript, Par. gr. 1816 of the French Bibliothèque Nationale, offers us exceptional evidence concerning the major philosophical and historical milestones in the elaboration of the Plotinus latinus. The nearly 2,500 annotations written by Ficino in the margins of this manuscript, put at his disposition by Cosimo de' Medici, are here edited, translated and commented upon. This important, previously unpublished exegetical instrument illustrates the various facets of Ficino's work over several decades on Plotinus's very difficult text: through his corrections of the transmitted text – some of these interventions have found their way into contemporary editions though their origin has not always been recognised – in doctrinal confrontation with the profoundly original Platonism of Plotinus, the manuscript reveals a Ficino anxious to integrate the Enneads in his own vision – at once Christian and Platonic – of the concordia philosophorum, whilst at the same time conscious of the sneering and audacity hardly worth saving of the Plotinian text. This Ficinian reading of the Enneads found diverse echoes in Ficino's own work and thus contributed to philosophical debate in the Renaissance and beyond

Bertolini, Manuel. Thesis, Clermont-Ferrand 2, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013CLF20004.

Full text
Abstract:
Is it possible to censure music? This question may sound rather extravagant, and this is perhaps why music is often overlooked in studies on ecclesiastical censorship in the early modern period, for it would seem that its very essence is incompatible with any form of control. In fact, the huge transformation the Catholic Church had to face, between the sixteenth and the seventeenth century, had a big impact on the music scene. Unavoidably, music was involved in the disputes between Catholics and Protestants as essential liturgical element. The musicologists have mainly studied the Council of Trent action, which seemed to be animated by the desire to remove the secular textual and melodic components from the church repertory. Therefore, Rome became the main center of production for sacred and spiritual music used in celebrations, devotional practices and also in teaching catechism. The case of the Society of Jesus is exemplar: music represent a powerful means of education in college programs, and a strategic tool in the catechesis work. To the enhancement of spiritual genres corresponds as well the will of ‘suppress’ the profane repertories. This is well documented during the age of Counter Reformation, by the variety of cases of ‘‘travestimento’’ which invest canzonette and madrigals. This attitude was also proved by some of the measures the ecclesiastical censure adopted against the vocal production since the seventies of the sixteenth century. In ancient Greek musical theory, harmony was seen as being endowed with a natural virtue capable of altering the rational faculties of the listener’s soul, to the extent of depriving that person of his freedom. The many ethical implications of this classical axiom featured in early modern theological debates. My thesis tries to provide a first answer to these questions by studying the conciliar decrees, the documents of the Index Congregation, the treatises on music and the manuals on demonology. These sources reveal musical censorship did not only involve zealous inquisitors battling with some licentious musician, but also the language of worship and the circulation of prohibited knowledge, which included dangers in the form of sounds that went beyond erotic seduction

The aim of the present dissertation constitutes to analyse the way in how light assumes the meaning of universal bond in the cosmovision of Marsilio Ficino, especially from his works Quid sit lumen, De Sole, De Amore and De Vita. The influence of Marsilio Ficino (1433-1499) in the history of occidental thought is impressive. Besides having translated to Latin the important texts of the neoplatonic tradition, Ficino presided over the Academy of Careggi, congregating important humanists in the top of the Renaissance. His treatises on love, beauty, light, magic and immortality of the soul have influenced strongly the production of other thinkers. The subject of light is of fundamental importance among his works since it is deeply related with all the other aspects of his philosophy. For him, light is spiritual emanation that perpasses everything without staining itself. Originated how the divine goodness, the light blows up in beauty in multiplicity, setting fire on the soul that truily contemplates it and that identifies whith it. The starting point of this loving relation between man and deity is, therefore, the physical world, that occults in itself the metaphysical light.

Full text
Abstract:
Analizaremos el episodio piloto (inicio), uno hacia mitad de la serie (nudo) y el final (desenlace) de dieciocho ficciones seriadas: Veep, BoJack Horseman, Peep Show, True Detective, Borgen, Boardwalk Empire, Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Six Feet Under, Entourage, The Sopranos, The Wire, Dexter, Game of Thrones, El Ministerio del tiempo, Penny Dreadful, Daredevil y Band of Brothers.
The main object of research of our investigation is the study of the Quality TV’s narrative inventio in the golden age of serial fiction. To achieve this, we will build a theoretical framework divided into three different parts. Firstly, we will explore the concept of ´Quality TV´ and we will define the era which started in January of 1999, and the era we still live in, as ´the serial fiction golden age’. Former TV series are the most important stories of the mass culture in the Western world, and they should be defined as ‘serial fictions’ for different reasons we will later go in depth into. Secondly, we will make a taxonomical proposal of the genres in the serial fictions golden age. Starting from the study of literary genres and cinematographic genres, we will identify the four main macro-genres that we can find in any audio-visual narration: epic, tragic, comedic and dramatic. Our proposal starts from these four big genres, and their hybridization, which is not only essential in Quality TV, but also a main characteristic of it. Lastly, we will make a theoretical proposal of the different elements that we can find within the narrative inventio, which can be found in any narration, regardless of its nature. This theoretical framework is the foundation of the analysis of our object of research. After acknowledging the main characteristics of Quality TV, we are going to point out the most important genres within it, in order to show an outlook as accurate as possible of Quality TV’s narrative inventio on serial fiction golden age. For the purpose of our analysis we will create an analysis sheet, in order to identify the different elements of our subject of research. We will analyse fifty-four episodes that try to show a heterogeneous representation of this subject of research. The selected episodes are the pilot (introduction), one in the middle (body) and the last episode (ending) of eighteen serial fictions: Veep, BoJack Horseman, Peep Show, True Detective, Borgen, Boardwalk Empire, Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Six Feet Under, Entourage, The Sopranos, The Wire, Dexter, Game of Thrones, El Ministerio del tiempo, Penny Dreadful, Daredevil y Band of Brothers. After completing this thematological analysis, we will point out the main recurrences, so that we can identify the main elements of the social contemporary imaginary, a collective imaginary which these serial fictions have built during the last two decades, and they are still building in the present.

Full text
Abstract:
The thermophysical nature of rapid CO2 laser heating of silica glass is explored using a numerical simulation that considers the temperature dependence of the glass thermophysical properties. A three dimensional heat transport model is developed to investigate the change in glass fictive temperature that occurs as a result of a CW CO2 laser processing of silica glass. The model reveals that the laser processing results in an increase in fictive temperature in the local laser affected zone. The fictive temperature is elevated by about 1000K, uniform to within 5% over the laser affected zone, and transitions abruptly to the untreated glass value outside of the laser affected zone. This increase corresponds to a change in the glass physical and chemical properties, which can be revealed through wet chemical etching. The relationship between etch rate and the fictive temperature is determined by etching samples of known fictive temperature. The thermal penetration depth, defined as the maximum depth to which the glass fictive temperature is increased by the laser-silica glass interaction, can be determined from the thermophysical model and compared with the results from wet chemical etching.

Abstract:
Abstract:
