Weird Fiction is often understood as an unclassifiable fusion of horror, science fiction (SF) and fantasy, and therefore a kind of generically hybridized writing. Here I discuss various parallels between Weird Fiction and music marketed and recognized as ‘extreme metal’, an umbrella term for bands playing in the core styles of black, death and doom metal, and their various offshoots like grindcore and sludge. Analysis of all Weird Metal is beyond the scope of this article, so I focus on artists who achieve Weirdness through the presence and interrelationship of hybridity, numinosity (an overwh

The vortex of the twentieth century, the late 1930s and early to mid 1940s, provides an appropriate setting for Jennifer Egan's experiment in historical fiction. Many popular histories have glorified the bands of brothers and Rosie the Riveters of the so-called greatest generation. The best fiction and poetry of the 1940s offered a different, unflattering view. Journalists from that era—Martha Gellhorn, for one—said they needed fiction to get the history right (313). Abstract Post-apocalyptic fiction triggers images of survivors of a catastrophe, forced to set out on a journey into a brutal and a dangerous world, struggling to ensure continued existence. Predators, zombies, and hostile bands are potentially lurking behind every corner. The sceneries of post-apocalyptic narratives are the remnants and ruins of the civilization that has collapsed. Buildings, roads, and bridges have been left empty and unattended; there is an atmosphere of uncanny strangeness. Abstract Published amid post-war shifts in the science fiction (SF) genre, bande dessinée and French society, the French comics Valérian et Laureline emerge as a pivotal work. Written by Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mézières after their time in the American West, the first album (1967–1971) blends nostalgic, American-style space operas with progressive sociopolitical themes of 1960s counterculture. Tracing the changing definitions and public perceptions of both SF and comics, this article suggests that the series opens up new possibilities for visual SF storytelling – especially, but not ex

Abstract In light of Timothy Corrigan’s discussion of the cult film as “adopted child,” Godard’s Band of Outsiders (Bande à part) can be viewed as a film which has transcended its original destiny and opened doors to diverse critical and spectatorial receptions. Drawing upon pulp fiction and the “B movie” genre, Godard’s original intent was to make a mainstream film. But it was precisely the film’s homage to the American mainstream that soon led to its cult status in non-mainstream cinema. The phrase ‘big in Japan’ has become a popular cliché, used to describe acts which are meant to be enjoying Japanese success: anyone from Kylie Minogue to Primal Scream; from Dead or Alive to Blur. It seems that even the most unregarded artists can make it in Japan. Even Spinal Tap – the fictional, washed-up heavy metal band from Rob Reiner's film of the same name – were finally able to find success in Japan. The implication seems to be that the Japanese hunger for Western culture is so strong that even bands who have failed in their own countries can succeed in the Japanese market. Indeed, an
