Abstract:
Towards the Light - - at times biographical, autobiographical, and basically fiction - is built out of anecdotes supplied to me as the result of direct questioning of my parents and relatives, and from my own memories of past experiences; from private 'on the ground' observations both in Western Australia and in Cornwall, England – and, where factual information is lacking, a good deal of creative invention on my part. My paternal great-grandfather who at the age of eight began his working life in a Cornish tin mine provided me with a figure central to my purpose while constructing this narrat

I investigate the spoken dialogue of four Indian novels in English: Mulk Raj Anand's Untouchable (1935), Khushwant Singh's Train to Pakistan (1956), Rasipuram Krishnaswami Narayan's The World of Nagaraj (1990), and Rohinton Mistry's Family Matters (2002). Roger Fowler has said that literature, as a form of discourse, articulates ideology; it is through linguistic criticism (combination of literary criticism and linguistic analyses) that the ideologies in a literary text are uncovered. Tan, Elizabeth. "Rubik & ‘We Have No Future’: The science-fictionalised present." Thesis, Curtin University, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11937/1889.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates the intrusion of science-fictional tropes and iconography onto our current social reality, and the cultural anxieties that this has produced. I characterise these anxieties broadly as a fear of obsolescence – ‘obsolescence’ signifying a loss of agency, relevance, uniqueness, and competence. My collection of short stories and exegesis experiment and engage with narrative strategies drawn from two closely overlapping narrative forms, science fiction and postmodern fiction, to articulate and represent obsolescence.

I used the EPR (Embodiment, Projection, and Role) and the Creative Expressive Model as drama therapy methods during the sessions. These methods not only provided the children with safety and distance but also enabled them to disclose their feelings and become empowered.
