Abstract:
This article attempts to define the notion of representation by means of a critique of the reception of the film Fiela se kind (Fiela’s child), based on the novel with the same name by Dalene Matthee. It shows how historical facts become subjected to different norms within the fictional space of the novel (and the film) and how the meaning of both is not primarily dependent on the correspondence to historical reality, but is influenced by filmic and novelistic coding, the horizon of expectations of the audience and the social symbolic value of certain places like the farmhouse.

Abstract:
The literary translator as a cultural mediator The translation process is an intercultural transfer that does not only take place between two languages, but between two cultures, as the source and target text are each embedded in a communicative situation in their respective cultures. The literary translator is thus faced with the problem of how to handle the cultural aspects implicit in a source text, and of choosing the most suitable technique to convey these aspects to the target text successfully while keeping in mind the characteristics of the intended readers. The translator can thus be regarded as a cultural mediator who facilitates communication and understanding between people or groups who differ with regard to language and culture. The various culture-specific words and concepts in Dalene Matthee’s “Fiela se kind” have far-reaching implications for translation. The extent to which the translator – Matthee herself – succeeded in functioning as a cultural mediator in “Fiela’s child” is investigated in this article by means of contrastive analysis. It is argued that a decisive loss of meaning and emotional value occured during the translation process to the detriment of the target text as a literary work. The contention of this article is that Matthee’s way of handling translation problems on a microstructural level brought about macrotextual semantic shifts in the target text, and that she did not succeed in fulfilling her role as a cultural mediator at all the levels of the text.

Abstract:
It is shown that a geometric optical description of the electromagnetic wave with respect to its polarization in a curved space-time can be obtained straightforwardly from the classical variational principle for the electromagnetic field. For this purpose the entire functional space of electromagnetic fields must be reduced to its subspace of locally plane monochromatic waves. We have formulated the constraints under which this can be achieved. These constraints introduce variables of another kind which specify a field of local frames associated with the wave. They contain some congruence with null-curves. The Lagrangian for constrained electromagnetic fields contains variables of two kinds, namely a congruence of null-curves and the field itself. This in turn yields two kinds of Euler- Lagrange equations. The equations of the first kind are trivial due to the constraints imposed. The variation of the curves yields the Papapetrou equations for a classical massless particle with helicity 1

Abstract:
Contemporary researchers can rely upon a wide repertoire of different and legitimized ways of representing field dialogues in scientific texts. This article addresses the issue of the crucial role these ways of reporting dialogues play in creating different data from the ‘same’ raw material and in the construction of very different kinds of scientific understanding of the phenomenon the original dialogues supposedly enlighten. By empirically illustrating this point, the author concludes by arguing in favor of the unavoidable rhetorical roots of scientific understanding. This typical relativistic claim does not lead to some kind of nihilistic stance. Rather, it delineates a clear zone of distributed responsibility. By defining what kind of knowledge they expect from a scientific account, the scientific community and, in a less visible way, the readers are crucial agents in orienting the researcher’s rhetorical choice as to represent dialogues-in-the-field. The researcher’s choice is, therefore, a profoundly dialogical decision.

Abstract:
Ship field repair sheduling is a asynchronism and concurrency process. Although it is complex, it is very important in the field repair decision at wartime. Through the optimal field repair scheduling, we can reduce the total repair time and improve repair efficiency. Regretly ship field repair scheduling optimization model has not been researched perfectly. Generally speaking, there are field repair processes of two kinds. Repair processe of one kind is that the repair sequence is fixed and the repair resource need not be scheduled. It is used to schedule repair tasks of the same kind. Repair processe of the other kind is that the repair resoure should be scheduled to reduce the total repair time. It is used to schedule the repair tasks of the different kind. The scheduling method of the first kind has been researched in math work. But the math model turns to be complex when the amount of the object increases. The scheduling method of the second kind is more complex than the first one. It is a typical asynchronism and concurrency process. So the new feasible models should be researched. Based on the repair processes of the two kinds, two ship field repair scheduling models are founded based on timed colored Petri net (TCPN) and depth first search method in this paper. The timed colored Petri net is used to model repair process and its transition rules are used to design the arithmetic. The arithmetics of the two models are explained in detail. In the second arithmetic, the conflict-solution is researched particularly. Conflict-solution method is corresponding to the field repair resource scheduling plan. The conflict-solution problem is solved based on depth first search method of artifical intelligence. Through the examples of the use of the two arithmetics, we find that the arithmetics given in this paper are very feasible and convenient. The field repair scheduling optimization models are the basic of the ship field repair and safety recovery intelligent decision support system. Through the optimization models we can generate the repair scheduling plan intelligently. That is to say the two models are not only optimization models but also intelligent models.

Abstract:
In the last few years, brane cosmological models with extra dimensions have been actively studied. In these scenarios, ordinary matter is confined in a (3+1)-dimensional surface (the world-sheet of a 3-brane) while gravity lives in the bulk space-time2,3. In this regard, it has been shown that the cosmology of such models is characterized by a non standard Friedmann equation4,5. Some analytic solutions have been found when the scalar field couples to the brane6, but they correspond to static solutions where the cosmological evolution is due to the motion of the brane into the bulk. In this talk I have presented two kinds of exact solutions obtained by solving Einstein's equations in the light-cone coordinate system and making two different assumptions : a. proportionality between the scalar field and the logarithm of the bulk scale factor7 and b. separable solutions. It has been shown that the first kind of solutions correspond to moving branes into static backgrounds : somehow the hypothesis of proportionality froze the evolution of the metric. On the contrary, in the second kind of solution the bulk is really dynamic. The induced cosmology in the brane has been explored for both types of solutions, confirming, in particular, the non standard cosmological evolution of the scale factor.

Abstract:
Analytic spherically symmetric solutions of the Einstein field equations coupled with a perfect fluid and with self-similarities of the zeroth, first and second kinds, found recently by Benoit and Coley [Class. Quantum Grav.15, 2397 (1998)], are studied, and found that some of them represent gravitational collapse. When the solutions have self-similarity of the first (homothetic) kind, some of the solutions may represent critical collapse but in the sense that now the "critical" solution separates the collapse that forms black holes from the collapse that forms naked singularities. The formation of such black holes always starts with a mass gap, although the "critical" solution has homothetic self-similarity. The solutions with self-similarity of the zeroth and second kinds seem irrelevant to critical collapse. Yet, it is also found that the de Sitter solution is a particular case of the solutions with self-similarity of the zeroth kind, and that the Schwarzschild solution is a particular case of the solutions with self-similarity of the second kind with the index α=3/2.

This paper presents a shimming method for correct the magnetic field inhomogeneity generated by the permanent magnet biplanar open MRI magnets. After giving the explanation of the degree of the magnetic field inhomogeneity, the shimming principle and method are given. In order to guarantee the precision and accuracy of the magnetic field, a 3D moving flat is developed. The intensity of magnetic field is shown by the aid of the Excel, and the engineer can shim the magnetic field by interacting with the computer. After using the proposed method on a batch of permanent magnet biplanar open MRIs, the experiment results show that the proposed method is effective.

Palko, Amy Joyce. "Charting habitus : Stephen King, the author protagonist and the field of literary production." Thesis, University of Stirling, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/1263.

Full text
Abstract:
While most research in King studies focuses on Stephen King’s contribution to the horror genre, this thesis approaches King as a participant in American popular culture, specifically exploring the role the author-protagonist plays in his writing about writing. I have chosen Bourdieu’s theoretical construct of habitus through which to focus my analysis into not only King’s narratives, but also into his non-fiction and paratextual material: forewords, introductions, afterwords, interviews, reviews, articles, editorials and unpublished archival documents. This has facilitated my investigation into the literary field that King participates within, and represents in his fiction, in order to provide insight into his perception of the high/low cultural divide, the autonomous and heteronomous principles of production and the ways in which position-taking within that field might be effected. This approach has resulted in a study that combines the methods of literary analysis and book history; it investigates both the literary construct and the tangible page. King’s part autobiography, part how-to guide, On Writing (2000), illustrates the rewards such an approach yields, by indicating four main ways in which his perception of, and participation in, the literary field manifests: the art/money dialectic, the dangers inherent in producing genre fiction, the representation of art produced according to the heteronomous principle and the relationship between popular culture and the Academy. The texts which form the focus of the case studies in this thesis, The Shining, Misery, The Dark Half, Bag of Bones and Lisey’s Story demonstrate that there exists a dramatisation of King’s habitus at the level of the narrative which is centred on the figure of the author-protagonist. I argue that the actions of the characters Jack Torrance, Paul Sheldon, Thad Beaumont, Mike Noonan and Scott Landon, and the situations they find themselves in, offer an expression of King’s perception of the literary field, an expression which benefits from being situated within the context of his paratextually articulated pronouncements of authorship, publication and cultural production.

Gil-Loaiza, Juliana, and Juliana Gil-Loaiza. "Establishment of a Vegetation Cover at the Iron King Mine and Humboldt Smelter Superfund Site: Evaluation of Compost-Assisted Phytostabilization." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/623172.

Full text
Abstract:
Mine tailings pose a health risk for populations and ecosystems in the Southwest; this is why effective, and low-cost solutions for the long term are needed. This work is groundbreaking since little information is available with regards to applying greenhouse studies of phytostabilization to the field for mine tailing remediation. Mine tailings from Iron King Mine and Humboldt Smelter Superfund (IKMHSS) site can be considered one of the worst scenarios due to the extreme conditions which prevent the growth of a vegetation cap. The high concentration of metals, such as arsenic and lead, highly acidic, lack of the nutrients carbon and nitrogen in the soil structure, and low microbial communities are factors that negatively affect plant growth. This project provides practical field-scale applications for the use of phytostabilization, which uses plants to create a vegetation cap that stabilizes metals in the root zone while preventing wind and water erosion in mine tailings. The project is divided into three main studies: (1) the assessment of the translation of successful greenhouse results to the field of phytostabilization using compost-assisted direct planting. This includes the use of different rates of compost as an amendment and different desert native plant species in addition to some potential parameters that could be used as indicators of a successful modification of biochemical and physical environment from a disturbed soil towards a more healthy soil when compost assisted direct planting phytostabilization is used; (2) the second study aims to evaluate the effect of the phytostabilization strategy on reducing windborne transport of particle and metal(loids) following the establishment of the vegetation cap. The results indicate that the vegetation resulted from direct planting decreases dust emissions from IKMHSS mine tailings; and (3) the third study focuses on one of the most important requirements for phytostabilization application in the field, the performance of the different plant species selected from the greenhouse studies. This performance was evaluated as the metal accumulation in aerial plant tissue based on metal concentration guidelines from the National Research Council as well as changes in the composition of plant species and canopy cover with time. The results derived from the translation of compost–assisted direct plating based on successful greenhouse results are showing the capacity of this technology on a field scale by maintaining a canopy cover over time that decreases mobilization by not hyper-accumulating metals in the aerial tissue and by preventing windborne particle dispersion with the potential of disrupting contamination pathways.

Abstract:
Challenging the currently orthodox "New Historicist" conception of Shakespeare's English history plays as a kind of "radically secular" historiography, this thesis attempts to show how Shakespeare's first chronicle play, 1--3HenryVI, was informed by and expressive of Protestant providential historiography. By comparing the texts of the plays with Foxe's Acts and Monuments, the central text of Elizabethan Protestant historiography, the author attempts to show how Foxe's influential history functioned both as an important source for Shakespeare's view of the past in 1--3HenryVI and as a vital intertext in terms of which the play would have been construed as history by Shakespeare's audience. At the heart of this source/intertext dynamic is the figure of Antichrist, a powerful historiographical symbol in Foxe which is adumbrated in Shakespeare's dramaturgy, giving the plays' representation of the violence of the Wars of the Roses era an ineluctably providential character. Having traced the Foxeian intertext in Shakespeare's play, the author concludes by suggesting that, again contrary to the secularizing bent of much recent "New Historicist" criticism, it is precisely because 1--3HenryVI spoke the language of Protestant providential history that Shakespeare's play was significantly "political" in its original late-Elizabethan historical moment.

Abstract:

Diploma thesis of was preceded by a specialized studio focused on the development of urban-architectural design in the area of "Vsetín - Ohrada". The newly created objects have the a task of transform the whole territory, which nowadays deteriorate. The solved area is separated by the highest industrial zone from the edge of the city and after the connection to the urban area. The whole sports complex is conceived as an independent urban complex, mainly linked to the surrounding nature. These are cycle paths that are designed for the entire area. The center is designed for the needs of the population of Vsetín and its catchment areas. Sports, recreational options for all ages. The grassy wall divides the river from the city and reflects the calm zone by the river, and at the same time divides large flat areas. In addition to sports, the area offers wellness, gastro and meeting places. The advantage of this place is cycling trail parallel to the beautiful nature. Moreover, the grassy wall is used to hide service roads and parking spaces. This ensures excellent transport accessibility and supply, but does not interfere with the sports complex. Wall created from excavations of single buildings and demolition works of the original stadium will achieve a safe transition from one sports ground to another, creating a natural observation post and incorporating buildings and sports facilities to become part of the wall and form a single unit. By embedding buildings in the wall, the buildings visually diminish. The embedded sports ground is bounded on two sides by a rampart and the third by a staircase. It can be used as a grandstand, or to enter the ridge of the dike. This minimizes the need for unsightly fencing on each pitch. With the new concept we will meet the requirements of visitors in the given locality and, above all, the attractiveness of the whole area will be increased.

Abstract:
“Overworking to death” is a phenomenon that has been noticeable in developing countries. The cause of death is mainly through ischemic strokes. While the victims’ occupations differed, they all shared a common characteristic, being positioned in a sedentary work, ranging from IT workers to doctors. This project’s aim was to develop a product that prevented or decreased the strokes that derived from sedentary overwork. This was mainly tackled by preventing one of the three causes of developing blood props, slowed blood flow. In order to gather rich data of the phenomenon, a qualitative study was conducted in China, during two months. By doing an extensive structured sampling, information rich data could be gathered during a short period of time. Data were derived from observations, questionnaires and an interview, which then was interpreted to customer needs and the final product specification. The final product became a trouser with an in built dynamic compression mechanic, that can compress the veins mostly during sitting activities, in order to prevent blood stasis. The compression mechanic works like the Chinese finger trap; compressing the calves while sitting and stretching the legs forward. It is made only out of polysaccharides fibres; cotton and corn.

Daly, Marwa El. "Challenges and potentials of channeling local philanthropy towards development and aocial justice and the role of waqf (Islamic and Arab-civic endowments) in building community foundations." Abstract:
This work provides a solid theoretical base on philanthropy, religious giving (Islamic zakat, ‘ushour, Waqf -plural: awqaf-, Sadaqa and Christian tithes or ‘ushour), and their implications on giving trends, development work, social justice philanthropy. The field study (quantitative and qualitative) that supports the theoretical framework reflects at a national level the Egyptian public’s perceptions on philanthropy, social justice, human rights, giving and volunteering and other concepts that determine the peoples’ civic engagement. The statistics cover 2000 households, 200 Civil Society Organizations distributed all over Egypt and interviews donors, recipients, religious people and other stakeholders. The numbers reflect philanthropic trends and for the first time provide a monetary estimate of local philanthropy of over USD 1 Billion annually. The survey proves that the per capita share of philanthropy outweighs the per capita share of foreign economic assistance to Egypt, which implies the significance of local giving if properly channeled, and not as it is actually consumed in the vicious circle of ad-hoc, person to person charity. In addition, the study relates local giving mechanisms derived from religion and culture to modern actual structures, like community foundations or community waqf that could bring about sustainable change in the communities. In sum, the work provides a comprehensive scientific base to help understand- and build on local philanthropy in Egypt. It explores the role that local individual giving could play in achieving sustainable development and building a new wave of community foundations not only in Egypt but in the Arab region at large. As a tangible result of this thesis, an innovative model that revives the concept of waqf and builds on the study’s results was created by the researcher and a dedicated board of trustees who succeeded in establishing Waqfeyat al Maadi Community Foundation (WMCF) that not only introduces the community foundation model to Egypt, but revives and modernizes the waqf as a practical authentic philanthropic structure.

The study focuses on the role of publishing strategies and the function of translation with specific reference to the German translation of Dalene Matthee's Fiela's Child The hypothetical scheme of Lambert and Van Gorp, which aims to show which relations play part in the production and shaping of translation as well as Fairclough serve as a basic guideline for the analysis of any genre-type shifts between high popular and trivial literature, with the hypothesis being that the publishing house has an influence on a genre-type shift taking place between high popular and trivial literature. The role of the German publishing house, namely the BasteiLubbe Verlag and its policies, are studied in this context. In addition, the relevance theoretical notion of processing efforts (Gutt) are applied to the text with regard to the German readership,

Abstract:
AbstractIn mathematics education, theories of teaching and learning based on disciplines different from mathematics (“imported” theories) are widely dominating the field. This imbalance greatly reduces the impact of mathematics education both on teacher education and on the teaching practice. In order to return to a balanced situation it is necessary to pay more attention to theories which are based on mathematics. As an example of such a “homegrown” theory, the paper presents the structure-genetic didactical analysis, the research method of mathematics education conceived of as a “design science”.

Abstract:
Two very different kinds of RCTs are used by economists, although they often get lumped together. The first kind is evaluative, used to assess whether a policy or intervention worked or not. Critics worry that privileging these RCTs over other evaluation methods can narrow knowledge. The second kind of RCT is exploratory, asking how behavior, institutions, and markets react to changing prices, contracts, and other economic features. By disrupting status quo economic conditions through experimental design, these exploratory RCTs open new questions for empirical micro-economics in ways that other methods cannot. One can be ambivalent about putting evaluative RCTs on a pedestal while also encouraging exploratory RCTs. Examples from RCTs of insurance, microcredit, and digital money illustrate the arguments.

Abstract:
This chapter details a study conducted with Opportunity International Savings and Loans, Ltd. (OISL)—one of Ghana's largest microfinance institutions—which analyzes the implications of interest rate for both revenue and outreach. The basic concept was simple: market loans to different people using a range of interest rates and observe how many and what kinds of people respond to the offer. The single biggest hang-up was the guarantor requirement. Most applicants had a hard time finding family or friends who could commit to cover a loan; it was also a hassle to do the paperwork. On the surface, this is a simple case of low participation. Far fewer clients took loans than was projected in the pilot, slashing the study's power. That so many clients dropped out because of the sheer duration of the application process suggests a second kind of failure: the study placed too high a burden on OISL's staff.

Abstract:
The chapter introduces the subfield of applied anthropology. Here the anthropologists are commissioned by the British Department of the Environment to find out what kind of “sites” should be built for highly nomadic British Gypsies. The goal is to minimize the negative impact their arrival in urban areas has on local residents and government authorities, while providing for Gypsy families’ basic needs. The chapter discusses conducting research in a highly politicized environment, one involving Gypsy organizations and a national election which brings in a new ruling party with a very different agenda for Gypsies.

In ASME 2015 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/imece2015-50592.

Full text
Abstract:
A kind of novel smart buffer material, magnetic-sensitive rubber (MSR) with embedded thin-walled iron balls, is provided, and the energy absorption and energy dissipation properties are investigated numerically. Two kinds of representative volume elements (RVEs) of MSR specimens with solid or hollow iron balls are studied, respectively. Under uniaxial compression alone or combined with magnetic field, the relation between effective stress and effective strain and that between strain energy desity and total compression deformation for these two specimens are established, respectively. With the increase of strain, it is demonstrated numerically that the MSRs with hollow iron balls have better energy absorption/dissipation capability than previous MSRs with solid balls. And the applied external magnetic-field increases this capability more. Under compression, the stress concentrations in elastomer matrix around the hollow balls decrease, that could increase the ultimate compression loads before the matrix failures. This is beneficial for us to design lightweight and efficient buffers according to different application cases.

Full text
Abstract:
In order to guarantee the safe and economic operation of nuclear power plant, providing the steam of high quality is very important. As the last stage of the steam-water separating device, corrugated-plate separator has low pressure loss and high separation efficiency, so it is widely used in various types of nuclear power plant. Due to the complexity of the flow field inside the corrugated-plate separator and the immaturity of the numerical method, the research on the corrugated-plate separator is mainly based on experiment. In this work, a kind of corrugated-plate separator with new structures are studied by means of experiment. In this work, test bed was built with plexiglass. The separation characteristics, resistance characteristics and critical inlet flow velocities of the two structures of separators at different inlet velocities were studied respectively. The following conclusions were obtained: With the increase of the inlet-air velocity, the separation efficiency increases, and the pressure loss increases too. But when the critical inlet flow velocity is reached, increasing the air velocity will reduce the separation efficiency. Considering the influence of structural parameters and airflow parameters, the optimum structural parameters of two kinds of wave plates are obtained. By contrast, it is found that the performance of double-hook corrugated-plate is better than that of single-hook corrugated-plate.

Abstract:
This report, prepared for The Jim Henson Company, shares findings of a sub-study investigating the types of support parents and caregivers need when navigating and using the second-screen Splash and Bubbles for Parents app. This study originated from a prior field study finding indicating families would benefit from support around the app since it represents a new kind of digital tool. In partnership with local Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) stations, we provided parents and caregivers more detailed support around the features of the app. Based on survey and interview findings, parents and caregivers found the app helpful for supporting their children’s science learning, thus validating the field study findings. We also found that all sections of the app were used and could help promote conversations between parent/caregiver and child. Moreover, families expressed choosing to use a specific app section when they felt it was more relevant or developmentally appropriate for their child.

Abstract:
The rise of the accountability movement in education has resulted in the proliferation of school report cards, school ratings and rankings, and other kinds of performance reporting for public consumption and policy use. To understand the strengths and limitations of school rating systems and the role they play in shaping public perceptions and school improvement practices, this paper situates rating systems within the broader field of comparative organizational assessments and neo-institutional theory; describes school rankings and rating systems in use by states and consumer-oriented enterprises; and details four aspects of school ratings (measurement, transformation, integration, and presentation) that affect their use and interpretation.
