Abstract:
This article attempts to define the notion of representation by means of a critique of the reception of the film Fiela se kind (Fiela’s child), based on the novel with the same name by Dalene Matthee. It shows how historical facts become subjected to different norms within the fictional space of the novel (and the film) and how the meaning of both is not primarily dependent on the correspondence to historical reality, but is influenced by filmic and novelistic coding, the horizon of expectations of the audience and the social symbolic value of certain places like the farmhouse.

Abstract:
The literary translator as a cultural mediator The translation process is an intercultural transfer that does not only take place between two languages, but between two cultures, as the source and target text are each embedded in a communicative situation in their respective cultures. The literary translator is thus faced with the problem of how to handle the cultural aspects implicit in a source text, and of choosing the most suitable technique to convey these aspects to the target text successfully while keeping in mind the characteristics of the intended readers. The translator can thus be regarded as a cultural mediator who facilitates communication and understanding between people or groups who differ with regard to language and culture. The various culture-specific words and concepts in Dalene Matthee’s “Fiela se kind” have far-reaching implications for translation. The extent to which the translator – Matthee herself – succeeded in functioning as a cultural mediator in “Fiela’s child” is investigated in this article by means of contrastive analysis. It is argued that a decisive loss of meaning and emotional value occured during the translation process to the detriment of the target text as a literary work. The contention of this article is that Matthee’s way of handling translation problems on a microstructural level brought about macrotextual semantic shifts in the target text, and that she did not succeed in fulfilling her role as a cultural mediator at all the levels of the text.

Abstract:
It is shown that a geometric optical description of the electromagnetic wave with respect to its polarization in a curved space-time can be obtained straightforwardly from the classical variational principle for the electromagnetic field. For this purpose the entire functional space of electromagnetic fields must be reduced to its subspace of locally plane monochromatic waves. We have formulated the constraints under which this can be achieved. These constraints introduce variables of another kind which specify a field of local frames associated with the wave. They contain some congruence with null-curves. The Lagrangian for constrained electromagnetic fields contains variables of two kinds, namely a congruence of null-curves and the field itself. This in turn yields two kinds of Euler- Lagrange equations. The equations of the first kind are trivial due to the constraints imposed. The variation of the curves yields the Papapetrou equations for a classical massless particle with helicity 1

Abstract:
Contemporary researchers can rely upon a wide repertoire of different and legitimized ways of representing field dialogues in scientific texts. This article addresses the issue of the crucial role these ways of reporting dialogues play in creating different data from the ‘same’ raw material and in the construction of very different kinds of scientific understanding of the phenomenon the original dialogues supposedly enlighten. By empirically illustrating this point, the author concludes by arguing in favor of the unavoidable rhetorical roots of scientific understanding. This typical relativistic claim does not lead to some kind of nihilistic stance. Rather, it delineates a clear zone of distributed responsibility. By defining what kind of knowledge they expect from a scientific account, the scientific community and, in a less visible way, the readers are crucial agents in orienting the researcher’s rhetorical choice as to represent dialogues-in-the-field. The researcher’s choice is, therefore, a profoundly dialogical decision.

Abstract:
Ship field repair sheduling is a asynchronism and concurrency process. Although it is complex, it is very important in the field repair decision at wartime. Through the optimal field repair scheduling, we can reduce the total repair time and improve repair efficiency. Regretly ship field repair scheduling optimization model has not been researched perfectly. Generally speaking, there are field repair processes of two kinds. Repair processe of one kind is that the repair sequence is fixed and the repair resource need not be scheduled. It is used to schedule repair tasks of the same kind. Repair processe of the other kind is that the repair resoure should be scheduled to reduce the total repair time. It is used to schedule the repair tasks of the different kind. The scheduling method of the first kind has been researched in math work. But the math model turns to be complex when the amount of the object increases. The scheduling method of the second kind is more complex than the first one. It is a typical asynchronism and concurrency process. So the new feasible models should be researched. Based on the repair processes of the two kinds, two ship field repair scheduling models are founded based on timed colored Petri net (TCPN) and depth first search method in this paper. The timed colored Petri net is used to model repair process and its transition rules are used to design the arithmetic. The arithmetics of the two models are explained in detail. In the second arithmetic, the conflict-solution is researched particularly. Conflict-solution method is corresponding to the field repair resource scheduling plan. The conflict-solution problem is solved based on depth first search method of artifical intelligence. Through the examples of the use of the two arithmetics, we find that the arithmetics given in this paper are very feasible and convenient. The field repair scheduling optimization models are the basic of the ship field repair and safety recovery intelligent decision support system. Through the optimization models we can generate the repair scheduling plan intelligently. That is to say the two models are not only optimization models but also intelligent models.

Abstract:
In the last few years, brane cosmological models with extra dimensions have been actively studied. In these scenarios, ordinary matter is confined in a (3+1)-dimensional surface (the world-sheet of a 3-brane) while gravity lives in the bulk space-time2,3. In this regard, it has been shown that the cosmology of such models is characterized by a non standard Friedmann equation4,5. Some analytic solutions have been found when the scalar field couples to the brane6, but they correspond to static solutions where the cosmological evolution is due to the motion of the brane into the bulk. In this talk I have presented two kinds of exact solutions obtained by solving Einstein's equations in the light-cone coordinate system and making two different assumptions : a. proportionality between the scalar field and the logarithm of the bulk scale factor7 and b. separable solutions. It has been shown that the first kind of solutions correspond to moving branes into static backgrounds : somehow the hypothesis of proportionality froze the evolution of the metric. On the contrary, in the second kind of solution the bulk is really dynamic. The induced cosmology in the brane has been explored for both types of solutions, confirming, in particular, the non standard cosmological evolution of the scale factor.

Abstract:
Analytic spherically symmetric solutions of the Einstein field equations coupled with a perfect fluid and with self-similarities of the zeroth, first and second kinds, found recently by Benoit and Coley [Class. Quantum Grav.15, 2397 (1998)], are studied, and found that some of them represent gravitational collapse. When the solutions have self-similarity of the first (homothetic) kind, some of the solutions may represent critical collapse but in the sense that now the "critical" solution separates the collapse that forms black holes from the collapse that forms naked singularities. The formation of such black holes always starts with a mass gap, although the "critical" solution has homothetic self-similarity. The solutions with self-similarity of the zeroth and second kinds seem irrelevant to critical collapse. Yet, it is also found that the de Sitter solution is a particular case of the solutions with self-similarity of the zeroth kind, and that the Schwarzschild solution is a particular case of the solutions with self-similarity of the second kind with the index α=3/2.

I call this experience ‘cubicle ethnography’, after how the structures of the office—keys, badges, desktop computers—reflected negotiations of access and my own legitimacy as a visiting ethnographer.

Gravitational waves are regarded as linear waves in the weak field approximation, which ignores the spacetime singularity. In this paper, we analyze singularities in exact gravitational wave solutions. We provide an exact general solution of the gravitational wave with cylindrical symmetry. The general solution includes some known cylindrical wave solutions as special cases. We show that there are two kinds of singularities in the cylindrical gravitational wave solution. The first kind of singularity corresponds to a singular source. The second kind of singularity corresponds to a resonance between different gravitational waves. When two gravitational waves coexist, the interference term in the source may vanish in the sense of time averaging.

Two types of carbonyl iron powders, (CIP's, BASF AG), the HS and HS-I (I = insulated, due a coating with phosphate), and two kinds of silica, one hydrophobic (Cab-O-Sil® TS610) and other hydrophilic (Cab-O-Sil® M5), were used to evaluate the influence of the surface treatment of the magnetic particle and the kind of fumed silica on the formulation of some magnetorheological suspensions (MRS). Oscillatory measurements at no field showed an evident difference between the silicas, but not a specific interaction with the phosphate coating on HSI. On the other hand, steady flow experiments also without magnetic field showed that the kind of silica and its specific interactions with the coating on iron powder drove the rheological behavior of the MRS on all region of the shear rate. Under magnetic field, the flow curves differences will be due to the iron particles and its magnetic properties, mainly on the region of higher shear rate.

Abstract:
To describe a nonlinear ultrasonic wave in a semiconductor with charged dislocations, an evolution equation is obtained that generalizes the well-known equations of wave dynamics: Burgers and Korteweg de Vries. By the method of truncated decompositions, an exact analytical solution of the evolution equation with a kink profile has been found. The kind of kink (increasing, decreasing) and its polarity depend on the values of the parameters and their signs. An ultrasonic wave in a semiconductor containing numerous charged dislocations is considered. It is assumed that there is a constant electric field that creates an electric current. The situation is similar to the case of the propagation of ultrasonic waves in piezoelectric semiconductors, but in the problem under consideration, instead of the electric field due to the piezoelectric properties of the medium, the electric field of dislocations appears.

Abstract:
Purpose Public schools in a democracy should educate young people to develop the knowledge and dispositions of citizenship in order to foster a more inclusive society and ensure the continuation of the democratic republic. Conceptualizations of citizenship must be clearly framed in order to support civic engagement, in particular, civic engagement for social justice. Rarely do educational technology scholars or educators interrogate the International Society for Technology in Education definition of digital citizenship. Educational technologists should connect notions of civic engagement and conceptions of digital citizenship. Instead, the field continues to engage in research, policy and practice which disconnects these ideas. This suggests that a gap exists between educational technologists’ conceptualizations of citizenship and the larger implications of citizenship within a democracy. The paper aims to discuss this issue. Design/methodology/approach This paper uses a between-study analysis of the literature to answer: How does the field of educational technology discuss and research digital citizenship? The data were coded using constant comparative analysis. The study adopted a theoretical framework grounded in Westheimer and Kahne’s (2004) What Kind of Citizen, and Krutka and Carpenter’s (2016) digital approach to citizenship. Findings The findings suggest that educational technologists’ uncritical usage of the term digital citizenship limits the authors’ field’s ability to contribute to a fundamental purpose of public schooling in a democracy – to develop citizens. Further, it hampers imagining opportunities to use educational technology to develop pedagogies of engaged citizenship for social justice. Originality/value Reframing the conception of digital citizenship as active civic engagement for social justice pushes scholarship, and its attendant implications for practice, in a proactive direction aimed at dismantling oppression.

Abstract:
To fulfill the requirement of fields such as robotics, aviation, and special machining, motors with quill shafts or outer rotors have been used. For these special motors, the photoelectric encoder’s volume is normally too big and easy to be polluted by oil or dust; magnetic encoder normally has poor accuracy, and alnico piece may not provide enough magnetic field coverage area. The aim of this essay is to find a new structure of magnetic encoder to improve the precision and magnetic field coverage area. By using two multi-pole alnico rings with a different number of pole pairs to provide a magnetic field, the coverage area could be improved. The position differences between two alnicos pole positions are used to calculate absolute angle value, so the accuracy of the encoder could be absolute and no less than that of a combined magnetic encoder with the same number of pole pairs. A special algorithm is proposed for decoding. This new kind of magnetic encoder could be used on special motors with quill shafts or outer rotors. Its volume and weight are less than the photoelectric encoder and have better performance on antipollution. The alnico ring is easy to modify to suit the structure of the motor.

Dual techniques have been used in many engineering papers to deal with singularity and ill-conditioning of the boundary element method (BEM). Our efforts are paid to explore theoretical analysis, including error and stability analysis, to fill up the gap between theory and computation. Our group provides the analysis for Laplace’s equation in circular domains with circular holes and in this paper for elliptic domains with elliptic holes. The explicit algebraic equations of the first kind and second kinds of the null field method (NFM) and the interior field method (IFM) have been studied extensively. Traditionally, the first and the second kinds of the NFM are used for the Dirichlet and Neumann problems, respectively. To bypass the degenerate scales of Dirichlet problems, the second and the first kinds of the NFM are used for the exterior and the interior boundaries, simultaneously, called the dual null field method (DNFM) in this paper. Optimal convergence rates and good stability for the DNFM can be achieved from our analysis. This paper is the first part of the study and mostly concerns theoretical aspects; the second part is expected to be devoted to numerical experiments.

Our main purpose is to develop the theory of existence of pseudo-superinvolutions of the first kind on finite dimensional central simple associative superalgebras over , where is a field of characteristic not 2. We try to show which kind of finite dimensional central simple associative superalgebras have a pseudo-superinvolution of the first kind. We will show that a division superalgebra over a field of characteristic not 2 of even type has pseudo-superinvolution (i.e., -antiautomorphism such that of the first kind if and only if is of order 2 in the Brauer-Wall group BW(). We will also show that a division superalgebra of odd type over a field of characteristic not 2 has a pseudo-superinvolution of the first kind if and only if and is of order 2 in the Brauer-Wall group BW(). Finally, we study the existence of pseudo-superinvolutions on central simple superalgebras .

Abstract:
In situwhite-beam synchrotron radiation topographic observations under an electric field have been made on the KTiOPO4(KTP) family of crystals. The investigation shows a strong enhancement of diffracted intensity forhklreflections (l ≠ 0) and topographic contrast in the form of fine striations when the external electric field is parallel to the polar axis. Several kinds of doped and undoped samples with various grown-in defects, such as domain boundaries, growth striations, growth-sector boundaries, dislocations, etc., have been studied in detail. The results suggest that these defects have very little effect on the field-induced striations. It is believed that the movement of K^+ ions driven by the electric field leads to a local accumulation of charges and a lattice distortion. The strongly anisotropic conductivity is a governing factor in the explanation of the field-related phenomena in this kind of quasi-one-dimensional conductor.

Abstract:
The work is devoted to the problem of role of ambient factors (external electromagnetic field, in particular) in the process of ageing of mechanically burden nonmetallic solids (rocks). A specific research point is the effect of temporary activation of Acoustic Emission (AE) of rocks specimens during action of EM field pulses applied externally. Extended experimental studies of responses of AE have been conducted to evince the changes in defects accumulation process in loaded specimens due to external power impacts (EPI). The experiments have been held on noiseless rheological machines available at Bishkek Geodynamic Research Center - RS RAS. We have tested a number of specimens made of different materials and analyzed the temporal dependence of AE activity during exposure in electric field and crossed electric and magnetic fields; the compressive load being constant. The effect of AE stimulation by power pulses (triggering) has been verified. The obtained results allow to distinguish two kinds of AE activation. The first kind involves simultaneous well correlated growth of numbers of minor and major AEs (so-called selfconsistency of temporal plots of activity of different range acoustic events). The second kind represents dissimilar variations: the increment of activity of minor energy AEs, but the decrement of those of major energy. The first kind of solids material responses to EPI is prevailing when the compressive loads is under 0,85 of fracturing value. The episodes of dissimilar AE responses may signify that electromagnetic control of defects accumulation process inside rocks is possible, in principle.

There is one project related to high resolution aeronautic camera, which is used in the Military aircraft. In the project, the task requires that the camera's field angle is ±20 degrees. Besides, we there need a window glass for the camera, and the distance between the window-glass and the platform is limited not more than 30mm. That is to say, the aerial camera is required to have a large field of view and small optical window order. To solve this problem, we designed a four-section-type optical window. This paper mainly describes the possible kinds of joining of the glasses used in this four-section-type optical window. There are three kinds of joining mentioned in this paper, such as mechanical connection, joining with adhesive and welding connection. Every kind has its own advantages and disadvantages. After the comprehensive consideration, the paper will use the method of mechanical connection. And this paper will give some guiding significance for the subsequent progress of the project.

We present here the study of field induced phase separation in E.R. and M.R. fluids. Two thermodynamic models — one for the formation of chais of particles and the other for phase separation are presented and compared with experimental results obtained with two kinds of suspensions. One was made of silica particles in silicone oil and the other was made of magnetic polystyrene particles in water. In the presence of a flow the phase separation occurs with the dense phase forming a regular pattern of stripes. The dependence of the period of these stripes on the intensity of the magnetic field is well reproduced by the same kind of thermodynamic model if we add the effect of normal stresses induced by the shear flow.

Abstract:
The radiated sound field of rotating machinery or reciprocating machinery has a significant periodically time-variant nature. This is a kind of non-stationary sound field and called cyclostationary sound field. In the conventional planar near-field acoustic holography(PNAH), this kind of sound field is treated as stationary field, so the information relating to the change of frequency with time will be loss inevitably. In this article, the cyclic spectral density(CSD) instead of the complex sound pressure was adopted as reconstructing physical quantity in the PNAH, and the cyclostationary PNAH(CPNAH) technique was proposed. Meanwhile, focusing on the calculation complex of CSD and the accuracy of the cyclic nature extracted, the gathering slice method of CSD was proposed by referring time aliasing methods on time series. The experiment results illustrate that the cyclic nature of cyclostationary sound field may be extracted directly and the location of the source determined exactly as well.

Abstract:
All the six kinds of rotation approach with the same form to the evolution problem of arbitrarily time-dependent two-level system are investigated in this paper. A time-dependent two-level system can be viewed as a spin-1/2 system in a time-varying magnetic field. It is shown that for each kind of rotation approach, we can always find a rotating frame in which the direction of the effective magnetic field is fixed. This property reduces the problem of finding the time-evolution operator to the solution of a second-order differential equation. Applications are made to the J C model in quantum optics and the L and au–Zener model in resonance physics.
