Abstract:
Abstract This article brings together the extensive literature on figurative language and translation into a single framework to serve translators in a directly practical way in their practice/training. It encourages a view of figurativeness as the norm rather than the exception and figurative language as a flexible meaning-making resource rather than an obstacle to contend with. All language is characterized as figurative because of the indeterminacy of language and the partial nature of meaning making; all translation is viewed as non-literal because of the lack of exact correspondences between languages and the need to use near equivalents. Two approaches are recommended: (1) recreating the ‘semantic space’ of the source rather than mechanically matching its lexicogrammar; (2) viewing metonymy and metaphor as ‘master tropes’ and translating other tropes in terms of relatedness. The challenges of translating metonymy and metaphor in discourse at the level of the whole text are also explored.

Abstract:
The objectives of the study are to identify the types of the figurative language found in the book and provide the contextual meaning of the found figurative language. The method used in collecting the data related to the subject of this research is documentation method, and this research was conducted by seeking any relevant data and information about the focus of the study from books and internet that are available for the analysis. The data collection was done by following these steps: reading the book, and then selecting sentences that have figurative language from the book. While the steps to analyze the data are identifying the types of figurative language on each sentence according to Leech, determining the contextual meaning of the figurative language, and eventually interpreting the data. The result shows that there are 274 figurative languages. Simile is at 18.2%. Afterwards, Litotes takes the second most found figurative language about 15.3%, and then Metaphor gets 14.2%. On the lowest point at 8.4 % are Personification and Irony. The rest types of figurative languages, Hyperbole, Metonymy, and Oxymoron, have various percentages at 10.9% for Hyperbole, 12.7% for Metonymy, and 12% for Oxymoron. It can be concluded that figurative language plays important roles in this book. Figurative language makes the novel more attractive to read, and helps the readers imagine the story, the circumstances, and the character based on what the author has illustrated. Hence, the imagination created by the reader is still in context of the story.

This paper is a corpus based study of the cultural meaning of figuration in the Malay lexicon. Initially, polysemy is examined for evidence of figurative conceptualisation at the single word level for two body part terms, mata ‘the eye’ and kaki ‘the foot /leg’. Compound forms are then examined to identify the extent to which similar conceptualisations are found. Finally, figurative phraseological units (simpulan bahasd) are examined for figurative conceptualisations. We consider the relationship between figurative meaning at the phraseological and lexical levels. The identification of figurative language is made with reference to dictionaries and its saliency is gauged with reference to a corpus of contemporary Malay.

Abstract Yablo argued that some metaphors are representationally essential: they enable us to express contents that we would not be able to express without them. He defended a fictionalist view of mathematical language by making the case that it similarly serves as a representational aid. Against this, Colyvan argued that metaphorical/figurative language can never play an essential role in explanation and that mathematical language often does, hence concluding that Yablo’s fictionalism is untenable. I show that Colyvan’s thesis about explanation is highly implausible in the absence of a challenge to Yablo’s position on representationally essential metaphors, which Colyvan does not attempt. I also briefly discuss other attempts to produce a simple knock-out argument against fictionalism and show them wanting.

As a system of communication, language has literal and figurative meanings. In the case of literal language, words are used to express meaning as defined, while in the case of figurative language, words are used to provide room for interpretation. A profound contemplation done by some linguists shows that Holy Qur’an uses two kinds of meanings, they are haqiqi (literal language) and majazi (figurative languages). In this case, metaphors or figurative language is used as a persuasive device to strengthen Muslims’ faith in God and convince disbelievers to believe in God.

Abstract:
Over the last twenty years, Francophone studies have redefined Beckett's style by copmparing it with modern arts models. Far from unanimous, this reception works on a graduated scale, ranging between two opposites: abstraction and figuration. The key issue in this divergence is 'representation,' a matter inherently effecting the conceptions of figurative and abstract arts as well as language. After arguing that language is inescapably figurative, I will opt for a flexible concept of figuration, with the capacity to mould itself on the traits of the 'undoing-doing' Beckettian style.

Abstract:
Figurative language is used in all domains of communication, including political discourse. And since figurative language is largely socio-culturally constructed it presents a significant locus for misinterpretation or even manipulation when it collides with the realm of international politics. This paper presents an analysis of several cases of the use of figurative language in Iranian political discourse. For example, it shows how transposing a Persian metaphor onto an English metaphor has led to a conceptual shift. Given the potential risks involved in misconstruing political discourse internationally, the paper concludes by calling for additional systematic comparative studies with respect to other languages.
