Abstract:
Students often have difficulty understanding figurative meanings compared to lexical meanings. Figurative meaning refers to the immediate meaning conveyed when a language is spoken in isolation, while the secondary meaning is dependent on the context; this is known as figurative meaning. On the other hand, lexical meaning refers to the literal meaning of language elements as symbols of things. The research aims to assess students’ proficiency in identifying figurative and lexical meanings and to compare this between the experiment and control classes. The study involved 46 students from the eleventh year at SMAN 1 Maja. It was a quantitative research study, indicating that the data collected were presented in numerical form and then interpreted using statistical analysis. The research tools included a questionnaire, observation, pre-test, and post-test. The results of the research showed that students' competence in identifying figurative and lexical meanings was low during the pre-test (5.23) and reached a sufficient level during the post-test (6.07). The post-test scores for figurative and lexical meanings were 6.57 and 6.92, respectively. The difference between pre-test and post-test scores was analyzed using t-tests, which yielded significant results for both the control class (t=4.84) and the experiment class (t=3.94) for figurative meaning, and for lexical meaning in the control class (t=2.712) and the experiment class (t=3.98). These results demonstrate that students' competence in identifying figurative and lexical meanings can improve their English proficiency, particularly in enhancing their speaking ability.

Abstract:
Polysemy is a phenomenon of language that needs to be studied both theoretically and practically. Its theoretical significance is reflected in the comparative study of the ways of semantic transfer in the work on the basis of bilingual materials. The practical aspect of the phenomenon of ambiguity can be seen in the structure of translation and explanatory dictionaries. Polysemy is examined in terms of the semantic structure of the word. The study of ambiguity in a particular language also focuses on the historical development, thinking, and cultural life of that people. The results can also be used effectively in the learning process.

Abstract:
This study explores the figurative meanings of the idiomatic expressions related to human hand as used in Jordanian spoken Arabic. It adopts the conceptual metaphor theory by Lakoff and Johnson (1980). Conceptual metaphor consists of a large number of mappings between a ‘source’ and a ‘target’ domain. The meaning of a particular linguistic expression is absolutely based on such mappings. The study is based on Lakoff and Johnson’s view of metaphor as part of everyday language. The sample of the study consists of twenty-four participants, twelve males and twelve females, who were asked to participate in the study. The participants interpret the target expressions (30 expressions) according to their underlying meanings rather lexical ones. The study shows that Jordanian Spoken Arabic is rich in metaphorical expressions on the body part ‘hand’. The results reveal that the metaphorical mappings are at work in linking the figurative meanings with the literal meanings of the idiomatic expressions of human hand in Jordanian spoken Arabic. Moreover, the results also reveal that some of these expressions have positively figurative meanings, others have negatively figurative meanings and some others have both positively and negatively figurative meanings, according to the context they occur in.

Abstract:
As a system of communication, language has literal and figurative meanings. In the case of literal language, words are used to express meaning as defined, while in the case of figurative language, words are used to provide room for interpretation. A profound contemplation done by some linguists shows that Holy Qur’an uses two kinds of meanings, they are haqiqi (literal language) and majazi (figurative languages). In this case, metaphors or figurative language is used as a persuasive device to strengthen Muslims’ faith in God and convince disbelievers to believe in God.

Abstract:
Semantics process plays a key-role in learning the literal and contextual meanings of a poem’s figurative-texture (Bredin, 1992; Cuccio, et al., 2014; Depraetere 2019). Improper understanding of semantics mechanism and contextual theories may lead also the common and determined audiences to learn ambiguious message and meaning of a word (Leclercq, 2020; Satta, 2020) that has many possible meanings which create semantic ambiguities and conflicts (Hoffman, et al., 2013). However, a poem audience must know that how does the meaning of a word or phrase work and how can he and she remove confusion to comprehend the literal meanings in the figurative language contexts of a poem. The figuarive-texture of Arnold’s Dover Beach is fabricated within diversed figures of speeches uploaded in the text. The collage text image of figurative texture presents common words and phrases with the byzantine meanings and misinformation of the synonyms and antonyms lexical pragmatic interface to the readers. In support and singnifant solutions for the research gap, this article attempt defined and described creatively to the role of semantics in the figurative-texture of Matthew Arnold’s Dover Beach so that collective and determined audiences can comprehend the poem creatically based on qualitative description research methodology.

Abstract:
Figurative Language uses words to explain or express complex meanings that are not easy to imagine. Figurative Language often uses comparisons so that the meaning or description of something can be expressed well in literature artworks such as poetry, books, poems, and even songs. Figurative Language contains hidden meanings in it, especially in song lyrics. Figurative Language makes the listeners understand the song's meaning and messages, then make a song more beautiful and variable. This research aims to find out the kinds of figurative language used in song lyrics entitled Harry’s House album by Harry Styles. The object of the research is song lyrics, especially in Harry’s House Album, which contains 13 songs. The research method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The data is collected from spoken and written words as well as observing behaviour. The data analysis is by identifying and classifying through the song lyrics, then analyzing it into the kinds of figurative language by using Kennedy’s theory as guidance. The final result of this research is that there are 10 kinds of figurative language used through song lyrics in Harry’s House album by Harry Styles. They are Personification, Simile, Metaphor, Hyperbole, Paradox, Irony, Metonymy, Synecdoche, symbolism, and Allusion. Moreover, the most used figurative language in song lyrics is metaphor. Abstract:
Studies in vocabulary acquisition have shown that guessing words from context may have a positive effect on eventual retention, but is not necessarily the most effective or efficient method in instructional settings. However, when cognitive linguistic insights into the conceptual links between different senses of polysemous words are applied, the guessing method can be made more effective by stimulating learners to develop 'precise elaborations'. For the acquisition of the abstract, figurative senses of polysemous words, precise elaborations can be accomplished by providing core meanings of these words. The assumption that providing core meanings will positively affect retention was tested in a series of experiments. In this paper, we report on the latest of these experiments, in which one half of a group of Dutch learners of English were given core meanings, while the other half was given another figurative meaning. The results show that guessing a figurative sense of a polysemous word is more successful when providing a core sense than when providing another figurative sense.

The research analyses some legal nominations used with known and interpreted meanings in dictionaries, as well as those that need explanation, as lexicographical works do not record them.
Particular attention is paid to lexical items that have acquired figurative meanings.
The use of legal nominations in economic journalism shows not only to the intersectoral character of certain terms, but also to the transition of language units from one scope, branch, activity to another.
We conclude that due to figurative meanings the terms lose their uniqueness, which makes it possible to trace the processes of determinologization in the Ukrainian language.

Abstract:
This study aims to examine the ability of students at SMP Lubbul Labib in distinguishing between literal (ḥarfī) and figurative (majāzī) meanings in Arabic. Mastery of these meanings is essential for understanding Arabic texts, especially in religious and literary contexts. The research adopts a descriptive quantitative approach, utilizing multiple-choice and essay tests as instruments to measure students' comprehension levels. The results reveal that most students still face difficulties in identifying figurative meanings, particularly when they appear in literary or religious sentence contexts that require deeper interpretation. These findings highlight the need for more contextual teaching strategies and the reinforcement of interpretative exercises in Arabic texts. The study recommends the implementation of context-based learning approaches and the integration of figurative meaning materials into classroom activities in a more intensive and sustainable manner.

Abstract:
Metonymy as a figurative aspect of language is problematic in translation. It utilizes "contiguity” to convey meaning. Approximation in metonymy coalesces dissimilar meanings and adds power to the structure. The present paper tackles this figurative use within religious environment, i.e. Prophetic Hadith. The paper examines, reviews and analyses some examples that utilize this figurative use along with their translations. A descriptive analysis is used as a theoretical basis to handle the data. Two translations for the Forty Hadiths of Anawawi areconsidered for this purpose. One of the key results of the present paper is that metonymic expressions are employed as an effective means for conveying Prophetic meanings and hence need a special treatment in translation. Translators followed the same procedures in rendering metonymic items. Notes should accompany translations to clarify meaning.

Abstract:
This study investigated the role of semantic analyzability in children’s understanding of idioms. Kindergartners and first, third, and fourth graders listened to idiomatic expressions either alone or at the end of short story contexts. Their task was to explain verbally the intended meanings of these phrases and then to choose their correct idiomatic interpretations. The idioms presented to the children differed in their degree of analyzability. Some idioms were highly analyzable or decomposable, with the meanings of their parts contributing independently to their overall figurative meanings. Other idioms were nondecomposable because it was difficult to see any relation between a phrase’s individual components and the idiom’s figurative meaning. The results showed that younger children (kindergartners and first graders) understood decomposable idioms better than they did nondecomposable phrases. Older children (third and fourth graders) understood both kinds of idioms equally well in supporting contexts, but were better at interpreting decomposable idioms than they were at understanding nondecomposable idioms without contextual information. These findings demonstrate that young children better understand idiomatic phrases whose individual parts independently contribute to their overall figurative meanings.

Abstract:
The influence of motivational relations on the phraseologisation of the morpheme structure of a derived word is analyzed the article. The main factors that help to find the hidden semantic components of figurative derivatives that have not received formal expression are outlined. Figuratively motivated derivative units, the morpheme structure of which cannot reflect the entire amount of information related to this element of reality are the object of the study. The phraseologization of the morpheme structure of figurative derivatives is caused by several factors: 1) the absence of the indication to the nomination object in the morpheme structure of the word; 2) «blurriness» of features – the basis of figurative and comparative relations; the speaker has to establish this feature independently, based on the typical figurative ideas inherent in the collective consciousness of a particular ethnic community; 3) the invariance of the affixes meanings. The conditions for establishing motivational relationships, namely, the presence of a minimal contextual environment of the derivative, play an important role in determining the hidden semantic components. In addition, the meaning of the word-forming formants should also be taken into account. The verbal context enables to actualize in the semantics of the figurative derivative the motivational feature that served as the basis for the formation of individual lexical and word-forming meaning, which is more or less part of the structure of lexical meaning of the word. In some cases, particularly for derivative words rarely used in modern language (obsolete, socially marked ones, etc.), synonymous relations can be such a kind of «context». In addition to the verbal context, an important element for establishing motivational features is the reliance on the internal context, which helps to understand the content of figurative derivatives by referring to the diverse knowledge of native speakers about the motivator and the stable associative and figurative representations fixed by it.

Neuhaus, Laura. "Four Potential Meanings of Double Negation." International Review of Pragmatics 8, no. 1 (2016): 55–81. http://dx.doi.org/10.1163/18773109-00702500.

Abstract:
The figurative use of double negations (not uninteresting, not unhappy) has been described by linguists and rhetoricians with regards to the rhetorical figure litotes. Both mitigation and strengthening have been proposed as aims of litotes (Horn, 1989; Krifka, 2007; van der Wouden, 1996). An analysis of the construction nicht un-adjective (not un-adj.) on the basis of German corpora leads to a coherent system of pragmatic functions for this sort of double negations. The construction can function as denial, potential presumption denial, mitigation or understatement. Nevertheless, litotes exemplifies the “indeterminate nature of figurative meaning” as suggested by Colston/Gibbs (2012: 259) in their dynamical systems approach. It is argued that a clear-cut line between literal and figurative meaning cannot be ascertained for these constructions. Still, contextual signals such as correction, associative particles or conventionalisation of use can help to identify different meanings as primary.

Abstract:
Objectives The purpose of this study is to elucidate the figurative meanings of color terms in English.
Methods To achieve this, the thesis conducts a comprehensive study on the figurative meanings of the fundamental color terms in English, focusing on metaphor and metonymy. The primary colors examined are black, white, red, yellow, and blue.
Results The study reveals that the majority of color terms in English possess both referential and extended meanings. For instance, the color term ‘black’ is associated with various figurative meanings such as BADNESS IS BLACK, DEPRESSION IS BLACK, UNCONSCIOUS IS BLACK, ILLEGALITY IS BLACK, SURPLUS IS BLACK, ANGER IS BLACK, EVIL IS BLACK, SARCASM IS BLACK, UNKNOWN IS BLACK, BRUISED IS BLACK.
Conclusions Color terms demonstrate systematic motivation through semantic extension mechanisms. Most expressions exhibit metonymic motivation, forming the basis for numerous color terms that are subsequently extended metaphorically.

Abstract:
This study's purpose is to examine the kinds of figurative language and the meaning contained in the figurative language contained in the lyrics of the songs "Make It Right" and "Permission to Dance", with reference to Griffiths (2006) on semantics for meaning and Knickerbocker and Renninger's (1963) theoretical framework for figurative language. The researcher used a descriptive qualitative method in conducting this research. The researcher found five types of figurative language and their meanings contained in the lyrics of the songs "Make It Right" and "Permission To Dance," namely: metaphor, simile, personification, hyperbole, and alliteration. The two types of figurative language most commonly used by researchers are metaphor and simile. Based on the data obtained, 4 metaphors, 4 similes, 3 personifications, 2 hyperboles, and 1 alliteration were found. The most dominant figurative languages are metaphor and simile. The meanings of these two songs are very different; it can also be seen that these two songs have a different atmosphere even though the type of music is almost the same, namely R&B remixes. In the song "Make It Right," they (BTS) are telling the beginning of their career journey, which previously was that of ordinary singers that not many people knew about. While the song Permission to Dance encourages fans to remain optimistic in the midst of a worldwide pandemic.

Abstract:
Translation plays a vital role in bridging cultures, conveying meanings that often extend beyond the literal, par-ticularly when the source text is rich in figurative language. This study focuses on two main objectives: (1) iden-tifying the types and distributions of figurative language in Evald Flisar's Words Above the Clouds, and (2) ana-lyzing the translation strategies used to render these figurative expressions from English into Indonesian. The re-search adopted a mixed-methods approach, combining both qualitative and quantitative methods to provide a thorough understanding of figurative language translation. A total of 147 instances of figurative language were analyzed using Gibbs’ theory on figurative language classification and Baker’s translation strategies for idioms and figurative expressions. The quantitative findings revealed that metaphors were the most frequent figurative language in both the source text (42.18%) and the target text (43.57%), emphasizing their role in the narrative. The dominant translation strategy was using similar meaning and form (57.82%), followed by paraphrasing (32.65%), reflecting the translator’s intention to preserve both meaning and stylistic impact. In terms of the des-criptive-qualitative analysis, the study highlighted the challenges in adapting figurative language across dif-ferent linguistic and cultural contexts. Although a number of adaptations achieved their goals, others failed by distorting or omitting intended meanings. The study also emphasized the translator's role as a cultural mediator, balancing fidelity to the original text with the need for clarity and accessibility in the target language. Ultimate-ly, this research contributes to cross-cultural communication and offers valuable insights for both translators and scholars, enriching the field of translation studies.

Abstract:
This study investigated learner knowledge of the figurative meanings of 30 collocations that can be both literal and figurative. One hundred and seven Chilean Spanish-speaking university students of English were asked to complete a meaning-recall collocation test in which the target items were embedded in non-defining sentences. Results showed limited collocation knowledge, with a mean score of 33% correct. The study also examined the effects of frequency, semantic transparency, year at university, and everyday engagement with the second language (L2) outside the classroom on this collocation knowledge. Mixed-effects modelling indicated that there was no relationship between frequency and semantic transparency and the knowledge of the figurative meanings. However, a positive relationship was found between this knowledge and year at university, time spent in an English-speaking country, and time spent reading.
