The responses of many neurons in primary visual cortex are modulated by stimuli outside the classical receptive field in ways that may contribute to integrative processes like scene segmentation. To explore this issue, single-unit neuronal responses were recorded in monkey cortical areas V1 and V2 to visual stimuli containing either a figure or a background pattern over the receptive field. Figures were defined either by orientation contrast or by illusory contours. In all conditions, the stimulation over the RF and its nearby surround was identical. The major challenges of figure types to clothing construction relate to issues of appearance, balance and proportion and clothing fit. Abstract:
An important document for the history and spirituality of the Franciscan Order is the Canonization Bull of St. Francis of Assisi, issued by Pope Gregory IX in 1228. It depicts the figure of Saint Poverello against the background of numerous biblical figures and images. This paper is a commentary on the text of the Bull, in particular on its biblical feature. Linguistic remarks on the translation are followed by an evaluation of available sources of the text and a statistic of biblical references present in the papal document. The central part of the paper is the presentation of biblical charac

With its original manifestation generally dated to c. 150 BC, the Invitation to the Dance is a textbook example of Hellenistic sculpture. But despite much scholarly attention there is still no consensus as to what motif the sculpture group depicts. Inspired by intertextual theory, this study catalogues and re-examines 35 sculptures of the female figure and 34 sculptures of the satyr. The article focuses on preserved sculptures, rather than a reconstructed model image. Variations of the repeated forms are highlighted as significant for the interpretation of the types. Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) can identify distinct cell populations across multiple samples with batch normalization used to reduce processing-based effects between samples. However, aggressive normalization obscures rare cell populations, which may be erroneously grouped with other cell types. There is a need for conservative batch normalization that maintains the biological signal necessary to detect rare cell populations. MapBatch We designed a batc

Puisque, selon Freud, le travail du rêve est le paradigme du travail de formation du symptôme hystérique, nous devons nous attendre à retrouver, aussi dans ce cas, trois types d’images et une fonction de transformation. Lightness illusions are often studied under static viewing conditions with figures varying in geometric design, containing different types of perceptual grouping and figure-ground cues. A few studies have explored the perception of lightness induction while modulating lightness illusions continuously in time, where changes in perceived lightness are often linked to the temporal modulation frequency, up to around 2–4 Hz. These findings support the concept of a cut-off frequency for lightness induction. However, another critical change (enhancement) in the magnitude of perceived lightness during

We enforced this understanding by taking a look at some examples of how allusion can be used in both of these contexts. In most cases, allusion is used to divert the mind to something which is not within the general context of the current conversation and is often left to the imagination of the listener or reader to create the reference for themselves. The huge number of single orientation measurements acquired by electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) poses a challenge for pole figure representation due to the large number of calculations required. This significantly reduces the speed at which the data may be rotated and affects the ability to switch between different projection types. The paper deals with a stylistic figure «oxymoron» which expresses a polar contradiction of concepts. Sematic and pragmatic properties of this stylistic device have been described. Semantically, simple and complicated (metaphoric) types of oxymoron may be singled out. Simple oxymorons include occasional units made by combinations of affixes or roots with contradictory meanings in compound words. Standard attributive nominal collocations make the majority of oxymorons. The simplest type of such collocations is a single-root word combination with a negative prefix for a part of the dyadic unit.
