Abstract:
The responses of many neurons in primary visual cortex are modulated by stimuli outside the classical receptive field in ways that may contribute to integrative processes like scene segmentation. To explore this issue, single-unit neuronal responses were recorded in monkey cortical areas V1 and V2 to visual stimuli containing either a figure or a background pattern over the receptive field. Figures were defined either by orientation contrast or by illusory contours. In all conditions, the stimulation over the RF and its nearby surround was identical. Both figure types enhanced the average popu

Experiments are reported which show that the tachistoscopic presentation of a figure at the point of fixation makes salient the same figure where it occurs elsewhere in the visual field during the same flash. This induced saliency operates in all directions from the axis of gaze. If the eccentric figure is alone on a blank field the phenomenon is termed ‘eccentric enhancement’. The induced saliency of figures that are laterally masked within horizontal strings of figures that lie off the fixation point is termed ‘demasking’.

This thesis is mainly focused on the geometric figure recognition. We provided many diverse shapes such as rectangle, ellipse, square, circle, parallelogram and other shapes. Based on different kinds of geometric shapes, a number of commonly used figure classification algorithm were designed to recognize all kinds of figures and a geometric figure painted on palette arbitrarily. The experimental results indicate that figure recognition algorithms can be well performed in an integrated graphical user interface.

12 girls ages 5 to 7 years indicated their figure preferences two times, 15 months apart. There was no difference in selection of current and ideal figures at Time 1, but 15 months later the girls rated their ideal figure significantly smaller than the current figure as have older girls and women.

Multi-modal and Unstructured nature of documents make their retrieval from healthcare document repositories a challenging task. Text based retrieval is the conventional approach used for solving this problem. In this paper, the authors explore an alternate avenue of using embedded figures for the retrieval task. Usually, context of a document is directly reflected in the associated figures, therefore embedded text within these figures along with image features have been used for similarity based retrieval of figures. The present work demonstrates that image features describing the structural p

Recent studies have demonstrated that women overestimate male preferences for thin female figures. This study examined whether women also overestimate the desirability of thin figures among female peers. Using body silhouettes employed by Fallon and Rozin (1985), 87 college women and 118 college men indicated the size of their own body figure, their ideal figure, the figure most attractive to other-sex peers, and the figure most attractive to same-sex peers. As predicted, the female silhouette that women selected as most attractive to same-sex peers was significantly thinner than the silhouett
