The effects of global warming are now being felt in various parts of the world. Few aspects of social and cultural life are likely to remain unaffected. The Pacific is widely regarded as one of the most vulnerable regions. Among the impacts of long-term environmental changes will be community migration and displacement. While most displacements are projected to be internal and temporary, for low lying atoll states in the Pacific permanent international relocation may be the only option. The qualities of democracy in Fiji are strongly influenced by ethnic divisions and indigenous sources of power and legitimacy in society. Periods of constitutional democracy interrupted by successive coups garnering conflicting support suggest that a more stable Fijian democracy requires a delicate balance of tribal, religious, ethnic and military interests. Successful democratic and governance reform requires the inclusive deliberation of all major groups in civil and political society, and not merely one that purports to represent all. The emergence of any ethno-political conflict is caused by the existence of one or another form of ethnic inequality. Therefore, the settlement of ethnic conflicts requires finding a new, compromise and acceptable for all parties to the conflict balance of mutual satisfaction of their interests. In recent decades, the problem of ethnic conflicts has been one of the most relevant topics for researchers representing various fields of science. The main reason for such a close attention to this issue is the importance of resolving such conflicts, which have also become one of the most common sourc

The problem of developing values of ‘shared citizenship’ in Fiji has long been made difficult by ethnic difference and conflict. Existing literature on political and social relations in Fiji has failed to address the significance of the education system as a factor in bridging the ethnic divide. Research on ethnicity and conflict treats the concept of ethnicity as defining the actors in these conflicts, whereas research on the construction and maintenance of ethnic identity explores why ethnicity unifies individuals into a single social group. What happens when this unifying concept is divided between two enemy countries? How does this situation influence peace settlements over territorial issues, armed conflict, and economic relations between these countries? To answer these questions, I create a continuous measure of ethnic similarity between rivals. I find that ethnic similarity ca

One of the most challenging issues for students of international relations is the interstate dimension of ethnic conflict in both its secessionist and irredentist forms. This thesis contributes to an understanding of the interstate dimension of ethnic conflict in three ways. First, the thesis provides a more precise delineation of the causal relationship between ethnic and interstate conflict. Second, the thesis develops a model to identify the conditions under which ethnic conflict is most likely to lead to interstate conflict.
