Abstract:
The article is devoted to the repertoire of the Vepsian taleteller Filipp Semenovich Smirnov (1863 - 1938), whose texts were recorded in 1935 - 1936 mainly in Russian and later made up a separate archival collection of the Russian-language folklore fund of the Scientific Archives of the Karelian Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Most of the tales were included in the collection "Vepsian tales", published in 1941 in Petrozavodsk and compiled by G. E. Vlasyev. F. S. Smirnov, being a literate person, replenished his repertoire with various literary works: many of the texts recorded from him go back to the tales of A. S. Pushkin, P. P. Ershov, Kh. K. Andersen, cheap popular (luboc) fairy tales, translated knightly novels and stories of the 18th century.

Abstract:
The Spanish Civil War occupies an important place in the European collective memory. The film language and depiction of that conflict provide an important platform from which to study certain features of the European cultural matrix. This paper examines propaganda films produced by the Republican government, especially those films produced under the supervision of Luis Buñuel, the Spanish surrealist filmmaker. At the start of the war, the Aragonese filmmaker returned to Paris following a summons by the Spanish Foreign Ministry to collaborate with the Spanish embassy in Paris in counterespionage and propaganda. Buñuel’s main task was to gather, organize and edit pro-Republican footage. Unlike films made for viewing in Spain, the Paris-produced propaganda films were aimed at audiences in Europe with the objective of changing the doctrine of non-intervention in the conflict. They are also characterized by Buñuel’s theories and conception of documentary film-making, in which reflection and the psychological resources that motivate action or move an individual conscience predominate. This paper describes and analyses the film language and practice of that era, in particular the unique and emblematic film «España 1936» (1937).

Abstract:
AbstractThis study reinvestigates the effects of primary imprinting of chicks with either a naturalistic stimulus or an artificial object on subsequent imprinting with artificial objects. Initial experience with a live chick (group C) or a yellow cylinder (group Y) had differential effects on the development of a secondary filial attachment in chicks. In chicks of both groups, growth of attachment to the novel imprinting object manifested itself rather abruptly, but the change in response to the novel object occurred later in C- than in Y-chicks. There was no difference between the groups in the outcome of secondary imprinting: chicks in groups C and Y eventually became equally strongly attached to their novel imprinting stimulus, and when exposed to a third object, chicks in both groups imprinted equally well on this object. Thus, (1) initial imprinting on a naturalistic stimulus postponed, but did not block secondary imprinting on an artificial object, and (2) within the lengths of exposure used, the capacity to form new filial attachments was not limited, contrary to the prediction of the competitive exclusion model for imprinting. Secondary imprinting was delayed for a longer time when chicks were exposed to the novel imprinting stimulus in an unfamiliar environment. This indicates that induction of fear in chicks interfered with the occurrence of secondary imprinting. This effect may havc contributed to the difference between groups C and Y in the length of delay of secondary imprinting. Possibly, separation from the first stimulus and exposure to the second stimulus was more fearful to C-chicks than to Y-chicks. Introduction Imprinting was originally described by LORENZ (1935, 1937) as an irreversible process. This does not necessarily mean that a young animal cannot form secondary filial attachments after having been imprinted on a

Abstract:
King Edward VIII’s 1936 abdication has remained fixed in modern memory as a traumatic constitutional crisis wrapped in what many consider the most fateful love story of the century. The King’s determination to marry Wallis Simpson, “the woman he loved,” still feeds the mills of popular and academic history. The narrative, however, habitually focuses on the Anglocentric world of the Court of St. James, the Anglican hierarchy, and Stanley Baldwin’s Conservative government. This focus overlooks the key role of non-British participants in the crisis. This article views the abdication through a significant Canadian prism. In London, Ontario-born banker Sir Edward Peacock (1871–1962) served as the Receiver-General of the Duchy of Cornwall, the investment trust designed to support the duties of the Prince of Wales. As such, Peacock became Edward’s most intimate financial advisor as abdication loomed, a role now fully elaborated in light of hitherto unconsulted papers held at Queen’s University. Press baron Lord Beaverbrook played a more public role, joining with Churchill, as the King’s champion, using his mass-circulation newspapers to curry public sympathy for the beleaguered monarch. In Ottawa, Prime Minister Mackenzie King trod a characteristically cautious line between guarding Canada’s autonomy, won under the 1931 Statute of Westminster, while still preserving its filial tie to Britain.

In his Belgian period, around the time of the Second World War, the famous literary scholar Paul de Man not only wrote his much discussed articles in the national socialist press, he also worked as a literary translator. As opposed to Paul de Man’s other writings, his work as a translator has received little scholarly attention. In this article I focus on De Man’s translation activity in the context of the complex cultural-political situation in Belgium during World War II. I analyse the link between poetics and politics in his French translation of the Dutch novel De soldaat Johan by the Belgian author Filip de Pillecyn (1939). The article undertakes both a contextualisation of De Man’s position and a textual analysis of his translation.

Abstract:
For quite a while, scientific biography was relegated to a subordinate status in the history of science. In the last two decades, however, it has seen a revival, which can be explained both by its popularity among general audiences as it conveys a closer image of scientists and scientific practice, and science historians' reappraisal of biography as a literary genre and as a source for their research. When writing scientific biographies or using them as a source, however, historians have to contend with complex questions, such as the extent to which a particular biography is representative of larger patterns, and they face a variety of problems associated with the use of sources such as oral testimonies and obituaries. In this paper, the scientific lives of Joaquim Filipe Nery da Encarnação Delgado (1835-1908) and Francisco Luís Pereira de Sousa (1870-1931), both engineers working at the Portuguese Geological Survey, and Carlos Teixeira (1910-1982), a leading geologist working in the academia, will be analysed. Through this comparison, the authors aim to characterize the development of Portuguese geology in different contexts in the period spanning from the mid-nineteenth to the twentieth century.

The subject of this thesis is an intertextual and psycho-analytic study of the relationship between two major dramatists of twentieth century Italian Theatre, Luigi Pirandello and Eduardo De Filippo. The analysis is in part conducted according to the concept of influence developed by Harold Bloom in The Anxiety Of Influence and expressed in "Freudian" terms, in which one poet, the later (Eduardo De Filippo), is presumed to "struggle" with or try to surpass his precursor (Luigi Pirandello).

The present dissertation has as its object of study the album \"Plínio Marcos em Prosa e samba, com Geraldo Filme, Zeca da Casa Verde e Toniquinho Batuqueiro\", recorded in 1974 by the Chantecler studio. The research\'s goal is to understand the process through which those four artists have created a historical narrative about the samba in São Paulo. Accordingly, the research investigates the social context in which the artists met, worked together and recorded the album. To accomplish that, this study analyzes the album\'s structure and its constituting elements: the songs, the musical structure and narrative interventions made by Plínio Marcos. The combination of those components creates a discourse that aims at giving legitimacy to the idea of a samba paulista, featuring a distinctive history and different features from other regional samba traditions. The research finds a process of identity construction as present in the production of the record, a hybrid text about the samba paulista and the city of São Paulo.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The thesis aims to study the path through which documentary film is established as a sensible object of political culture. We focus our analysis in a concept of political culture, firstly considering the complexity of its theories and practices, secondly exploring the relationship between documentary film and political culture from the perspective of political science. Thus, we comprehend political culture as a set of values, beliefs, and attitudes politically oriented and demonstrated through cultural practices, due to its interpretive and symbolic elements. Taking into consideration the revolution of April 25, 1974 in Portugal, and following its process of democratic transition, we will examine the convergent and divergent points recorded by documentary film and grasp political culture as a cultural practice and political and social memory. This thesis is structured in three parts: The first part is committed to conceptual approaches, state of the art, and methodological framework. The second part is committed to analytical perspectives and thematic framework of cinema and documentary film in the study of political science, and to the historical-empirical evaluation of the events of democratic transition in Portugal. The third part results in the accommodation and synthesis about documentary film as a tool for the analysis of political culture.

This research work focuses on a specific point of Eduardo De Filippo’s work (Naples, 1900 – Rome, 1984), that is to say the irruption of the supernatural in the production of the author-actor-stage director. We have structured our thesis in two phases. We first analyse the authors’s compliance with the so called « realistic » theatre, his vision of the role of theatre, the thematic foothold in the 20th century history and in his personal experience ; we are concerned with how De Filippo integrates the literary and theatrical tradition of fantasy and offers a realistic vision appealing to the Fantastic categories. Then we investigate the stage space as an ideal place for fantasy and fantasies, we examine the stage varied components (stage design, objects), the acting of the actors (voice, corporeality, the character and the ghost) within the stage-audience conventions to bring to light the particular link that all those who participate to the performance maintain with the supernatural. Finally, we study the process of traduction on stage of problematics linked to ghost and fantasy in two remarkable and very different interpretations of La Grande magia : the one by Giorgio Strehler at the Piccolo Teatro of Milan in 1985 and one by Dan Jemmett at Comédie-Française in 2009

Abstract:
Radical anti-traditionalism es a key watchword of Futurism. Marinetti enhances this concept in the Manifesto published in Le Figaro on 20th February 1909 and applies it literally when in 1911 he denies his « Symbolist Masters » (Baudelaire, Verlaine, Mallarmé). Is that really so? A reading of the poetry that Marinetti composed in French before 1909 (La Conquête des Étoiles, Destruction, La Ville Charnelle) shows that Futurist doctrine sets itself up “in comparison with” the authors of the past – although it is a recent past, since it refers to French Symbolism and Post-Symbolism and to the Italian poetry of that time (above all D’Annunzio and Pascoli). Our study aims at drawing up a scheme that unfolds like a series of « rewritings » or successive metamorphoses brought about by the death of the previous model and its conversion to a new personal work. The updating of this unceasing mechanism of death and regeneration lets Futurism be comprehended in its essential « mythical » dimension which is, in our opinion, the real birth of a movement whose principles the Manifesto will theorize

Abstract:
This examines the economic impact of the Great Depression on Hollywood’s profitability in 1930-34 and how the film business changed in the course of seeking renewed financial success. It considers technological advances associated with the new dialogue-based medium, changes in movie genres and how particular studios became identified with these, the adaptation of the star system and its significance for studio profitability, and the move towards industry self-regulation with the establishment of the Production Code Administration in 1934.. It finally considers the New Deal’s response to monopoly in Hollywood and the Justice Department’s filing of the U.S. v Paramount et al suit in 1938

Abstract:
This chapter begins with Daniels's interview with Southern Tenant Farmers Union (STFU) president J. R. Butler, then presents an overview of the union's founding and early years from 1934-1937. The union's struggles to achieve biracial unity and reconcile white leaders' Socialist vision with rank-and-file members' preference for independent landownership within the capitalist system are explored. The chapter briefly explains the disruptive effects of the Agricultural Adjustment Act of 1933 and divisions within the Agricultural Adjustment Administration (AAA) and the Department of Agricultural. Planters' violent reprisals against the STFU are also a major theme. The chapter recounts Daniels's visits to the Dyess Colony in Arkansas and the Delta Cooperative Farm at Hillhouse, Mississippi. Delta's relationship to the subsequent Providence Farm community in Holmes County, Mississippi, is noted. The STFU declined after its 1937 merger with the United Cannery, Agriculture, Packing, and Allied Workers of America (UCAPWA), which was affiliated with the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO). Meanwhile, the creation of the Farm Security Administration (FSA) brought belated and ultimately inadequate federal attention to the problems of sharecroppers and tenant farmers.

Abstract:
This chapter examines a filone of mafia films that proliferated in Italy between 1972 and 1974, and analyses how they inherit, recycle and perpetuate a number of pre-existing popular myths that frame the mafia as a repository for elegiac nostalgia. Transatlantic myths that crystallised in The Godfather are themselves shown to emerge from traditions of representation and stereotyping, in which the mafia film has always acted as a chronicle of cultural displacement. The Italian mafia film, meanwhile, is shown to be a component part of a broader tendency to stereotype the 'backward' southern regions of Italy as a window into the nation's history and a forum for taking stock of the contemporary moment in relation to a benighted past. The mafia filone of 1972-1974 is thereby seen to be an illuminating document of production decisions, marketing ploys and ruminations on the state of contemporary Italy.

Abstract:
This chapter details how Marshal Tito, with a forged passport in the name of John Alexander Karlsson, left Leningrad for Copenhagen and arrived in Paris on 27 January 1939. It discusses the publication of the illegal Paris-based party bulletin Proleter, which was dispatched to the Comintern by well-established channels. It also recounts the arrest of the entire “Dalmatian faction” of the incorrigible “Petkovites” in Graz after the Eighth Conference in 1928. The chapter mentions Filip Filipović, who was not mentioned in the Bohinjska Bistrica decision but was arrested in 1938 and shot with other demoted cadres. It talks about the end of the Bohinj anathema, the petty factionalists from Paris and Dalmatia, and the major sinners who were shot in Moscow as soon as Proleter reached its subscribers in the Comintern apparatus.
