Abstract:
English is the medium of instruction in the Philippines. Although Filipinos are focused on acquiring American English, they are undoubtedly exposed to other types. However, little research has investigated this distinctiveness within the Philippine context. Hence, this case study explored the perceptions of Filipino students toward the varieties of English. Five students in the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) department who took the Bachelor of Arts in the English Language course were chosen as participants. A semi-structured interview allowed the researchers to understand the topic necessary for relevant and meaningful data. To provide better analysis, the authors utilized thematic synthesis. Five (5) themes emerged, namely: (1) English varieties’ perceptions and importance; (2) integration of English varieties in the curriculum; (3) English varieties in the teaching-learning process; (4) the edge of knowing and applying English varieties; and (5) challenges and realizations. The study concluded that Filipino students value their exposure to various English varieties. Moreover, the features (e.g., word usage, pronunciation, accents) attributed to each variety were the most significant challenge. This paper recommends that students have more exposure and supplementary materials to address such difficulties.

Abstract:
The Philippines is considered one of the largest English-speaking nations in the world. In fact, English is one of the official languages in the Philippines. But throughout the years, a gradual deterioration in English language proficiency can be observed among Filipinos based on the EF English Proficiency Index, Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC), and the average score of Filipino IELTS takers. This paper aims to discuss the different factors behind the descending Filipino English proficiency, such as learners’ motivation, parental involvement, learning environment, teaching strategies, comprehensive input, learners’ socio-economic status, and learners' age. Several articles have been reviewed and examined for the authors to come up with the following conclusions: 1) Continuous practice and usage of the English language could help us further cement our economy; 2) there is still a huge room for improvement in terms of grammar which could also help alleviate learners’ anxiousness, and 3) we still need to strike a balance in polishing the English language education and nurturing our local and cultural languages. This review will help the teachers in planning and implementing English classes to improve students' English proficiency, the educational institutions that aim to uplift the quality of English language teaching, and curriculum developers in constructing innovative English proficiency learning materials.

Abstract:
Current studies show that the Christian faith is still robust in Philippine society and culture despite the global health crisis. This study investigates how select Filipino Christian youths intuited God’s benevolent love in the time of “social distancing” and how their experience of God’s benevolence helped them to carry on despite the COVID-19 pandemic. The authors administered open-ended survey questions about God’s love to select Filipino Christian youths. The responses were analyzed using thematic analysis and categorizations. Using contextual analysis, the researchers critically reflected upon the respondents’ notions of God’s love and religious experiences from the two poles of Filipino culture and Judeo-Christian tradition. According to select Filipino Christian youths, God is present and faithful. God’s “kagandahang-loob” (benevolent love) for human persons is evinced in the care and kindness of family members and neighbors. God also enables human persons to prevail over challenges in life, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, God is the ultimate source of Christian hope. This hope is firmly anchored in Jesus Christ and the Church. Furthermore, God is forgiving and merciful. He continues to bless and give graces to human persons despite their sinfulness. These contemporary conceptualizations of God’s perfect interior goodness helped the select Filipino Christian youths cope with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract:
The study aimed to explore the Localized Aspects of the Literature in the Linguistic aspects, literary devices, and socio-pragmatic aspect of the language. Qualitative design was used in the analysis of the literary text which includes textual analysis of the four literary works of Amador T. Daguio. Textual analysis of the four literary texts of Amador T. Daguio was done to analyze and interpret the status of the language in terms of its linguistic aspects, literary aspects, and socio-pragmatic aspects of the language. Based on the textual analysis, the following conclusions are drawn: The study revealed that in the localized aspects of the language in terms of lexical and syntactic level, Most Filipino authors depict rich cultural environment in their literary writings. In terms of the literary aspect of the language, the dominant literary device used was “simile” to show the rich and specific culture values, practices, emotions, and other realities of rural Filipino life. In the socio-pragmatic aspects of the language, the most prevailing aspect of ethnography of communication in the selected literary works is “setting or scene” showing the actual place and over all location of the situation happened in the stories as emphasized as to where and how the characters interact or communicate. The following recommendations were formulated based on the textual analysis and conclusions of the study. Literature teachers should have relevant and sufficient background knowledge to integrate activities in identifying linguistic innovations under lexical and syntactic levels in their lessons and use Iluko literary pieces written in English by Ilocano authors as a springboard in teaching literary devices. Literature teachers should maximize the use of literary texts written in English by Filipinos in learning Filipino values, practices, emotions, and other facets of rural life for them to appreciate their own culture which enables and enhances their appreciation of Ilocano cultures through reading a particular literary text with a touch of their native and rural language which will eventually help them appreciate their own culture. Literary text written in English by Iluko writer with a touch of Ilocano theme and setting should be included in teaching literature in schools in order to understand better the different cultural aspects that were reflected in the different local literary works.

Abstract:
A year into the COVID-19 pandemic and one of the longest recorded lockdowns in the world, the Philippines received its first delivery of COVID-19 vaccines on 1 March 2021 through WHO’s COVAX initiative. A month into inoculation of all frontline health professionals and other priority groups, the authors of this study gathered data on the sentiment of Filipinos regarding the Philippine government’s efforts using the social networking site Twitter. Natural language processing techniques were applied to understand the general sentiment, which can help the government in analyzing their response. The sentiments were annotated and trained using the Naïve Bayes model to classify English and Filipino language tweets into positive, neutral, and negative polarities through the RapidMiner data science software. The results yielded an 81.77% accuracy, which outweighs the accuracy of recent sentiment analysis studies using Twitter data from the Philippines.

Abstract:
The city of Chicago is home to the third largest concentration of Korean Americans in the United States. It is estimated that four out of five Korean Americans in Chicago live in the suburbs. In this paper, the authors examine the extent of spatial assimilation of Korean Americans with both the “mainstream” American populations, namely, the Caucasian, Black and Hispanic populations, and also their residential patterns vis-à-vis other dominant Asian sub-groups in Chicago—Chinese, Indians and Filipinos. Their analysis examines spatial assimilation of Korean Americans in terms of their residential segregation/integration from 1970 to 2010 in a multi-ethnic context. Results indicate that in general Koreans are becoming more integrated (less segregated) with the White population over the forty year time period in every major county where they were clustered, while they are generally more segregated from the Black and Hispanic populations. Among the dominant Asian sub-groups, Korean Americans tended to be more integrated with Chinese and Indian populations, and more segregated from the Filipino population.

Abstract:
This research investigated the representation of sexuality and erotism in selected Filipino short stories, examining the underlying psychological implications of these elements through the lens of Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory. By exploring narratives within a post-colonial Philippine context, the study employed directed content analysis and thematic analysis to uncover the complexities of human desire. The analysis focused on works such as "The Dead Stars" by Paz Marquez Benitez, "Midsummer" by Manuel E. Arguilla, "The Virgin" by Kerima Polotan Tuvera, and "The Riddle" by F. Sionil Jose. The research identified recurring themes of repressed desires, the negotiation of sexual identity, and the influence of cultural and societal norms. These stories revealed the intricate interplay between sexuality and identity, the confrontation of societal taboos, and the psychological dimensions of erotism. The findings highlight how authors use narrative techniques to delve into these themes, providing insights into the human psyche. Moreover, the study underscored the importance of literature as a medium for exploring the nuances of sexuality and challenging entrenched cultural taboos. By examining how these Filipino authors address and articulate themes of desire and erotism, the research contributed to a deeper understanding of the human experience and the ongoing negotiation of sexual identity within a specific cultural and historical framework.

Abstract:
In the digital age, militarisation, encompassing police power, soldiers, and various military resources, has become increasingly prevalent in various forms of Philippine media. Thus, "Multimedia Militarisation" best describes how Philippine media instills ideals and manipulates mass audiences to accept the status quo. Right-wing propaganda normalises violence and warfare. In this paper, the authors argue that TV series like "Ang Probinsyano," "The General's Daughter," and "A Soldier's Heart" have played a significant role in shaping social consciousness. They have influenced how people view military personnel and what is philosophically referred to as state apparatuses, which encompass the police, military, justice system, and prison system, along with their respective leaders, as integral members of an ideal society. Furthermore, the authors consider it essential to reference historical instances, such as Hitler's Nazi Germany and Marcosian Philippines, where propaganda played a pivotal role in manipulating social consciousness through the dissemination of false information. The study identifies three main themes: the glorification of the armed branch of government, the normalisation of violence, and the introduction of revolutionary ideology to the public. Finally, this paper adopts a social-historical approach and critically analyses the current state of the country's mainstream media, highlighting its reactionary implications. It emphasises how these media outlets air films that advocate for the necessity of militarisation, all in the context of the progress of Philippine society and the evolving definition of patriotism within a populist cultural setting.

Abstract:
In both an American and Filipino population considerable family resemblance in death anxiety, death depression, and death distress was found. In both populations the death attitude measures of adolescents correlated with those of their parents, but the correlations were higher between the mothers and fathers. Most of the correlations were higher for the Filipino than for the American participants, and it was suggested that this is a function of closer family life in the Philippines. Although family resemblance on the Death Anxiety Scale was first reported by Templer, Ruff, and Franks [1] and confirmed by subsequent authors, the present study was the first study that addressed family resemblance on the more recently constructed Death Depression Scale or death distress (the sum of the z scores of Death Anxiety Scale and Death Depression Scale). In the American population, Catholics had significantly higher death anxiety and death depression and death distress scores than Protestants, and Hispanics had significantly higher death anxiety, death depression, and death distress scores than Euro-Americans. Clinical and research implications were discussed.

Abstract:
Government is key to promoting physical activity at the population level through policy. The government was one of the physical activity indicators graded for the 2022 Philippine Physical Activity Report Card based on ten physical activity-related policies. This study aimed to evaluate the scope of the policies and to update these policies. Philippine government databases were searched for policies using physical activity-related key terms. Policies found were evaluated using the Wales Active Healthy Kids scoring rubric. The overall grade was converted to a letter grade based on the Global Matrix 4.0 grading system. The authors analyzed the policies’ scope and implications to practice and policy. Seven additional policies were found. Considering all 17 policies, the government indicator grade is now A- from the preliminary grade of B. The scope covers promoting physical activity mainly through sports participation and active transport among students, student-athletes, persons with disabilities, and the general population in school and community settings. The gap between government and overall physical activity (F) scores suggests the need for a comprehensive physical activity plan promoting various forms of physical activity and reducing sedentary behavior among all Filipino youth and across various settings. Crucial to achieving change is a well-coordinated, whole-of-systems approach to promoting active healthy lifestyles.

Through interviews with 100 journalists and editors in seven countries, the authors examine safety as the main challenge for journalists covering war and conflict in both local and international contexts. The article places a particular focus on the situation for Filipino and Norwegian journalists. The underreporting of legal aspects of international conflict, combined with less security, means less presence and more journalistic coverage based on second-hand observation. The article argues that reduced access to conflict hotspots owing to the tactical targeting of journalists might distort the coverage of wars and conflicts, and affect the quality of journalism in future.

Abstract:
Literature has always been an instrument that reflects the life and times of people of various ages and civilizations. This is the reason why Literature subjects are incorporated in the Philippine curricula from the secondary to the tertiary level. The aim of this course is to broaden the knowledge of academic patrons as regards the realities that engulf a particular society. The researcher has foreseen the importance of Philippine Literature instruction, especially with the advent of K to 12. Thus, this literary research is the proponents’ dissertation which intends to add to the existing methodologies and approaches in the teaching of Philippine Literature in the contemporary. The researcher has come up with an instructional guide that would serve as alternative reference material for Literature teachers in the K to 12 program. However, only three (3) analyses from the instructional guide were included in this journal. This instructional guide takes a detour from the conventional instruction of Literature by focusing on the thematic approach rather than the biographical, historical and regional approach. Furthermore, the study is a breakthrough in Philippine Literature instruction since it would be the first non-empirical study to venture into the thematic facilitation of Philippine letters for grades 11 and 12. The instructional guide explores the literature written by Filipino authors in the past and present in accordance with theme, conflict, and symbol to determine their worth and merits through analytical inquiry. Each literary selection is analyzed using the text as the primary evidence. The thematic evaluation reveals the four main characteristics of the Filipinos: Filipinos are loving and passionate; they are strong and resilient; they are a product of hybridity; they have greatly suffered, but their positivity toward life is always put in the obvious.

Abstract:
Immigration scholars largely focus on adaptation processes of immigrant groups, while race scholars focus on structural barriers nonwhite immigrants face. By comparing nonwhite immigrants with native-born Americans, we can better understand how racial logics affect the identification of racial minorities in the United States. Drawing on 153 interviews with Indian, Caribbean, Chinese, Filipino, and Mexican immigrants, and comparing their narratives to those of black native-born respondents, the authors find similar understandings of American identity across immigrant groups as well as barriers to recognition as American shared by immigrants and native-born blacks. Immigrant narratives continue to reify the United States as a white nation, thus leading to their exclusion by default.

Abstract:
Abstract Background The Philippines has the fastest-growing HIV epidemic in the Asia-Pacific. Concurrent sexually-transmitted infections increase the risk of HIV transmission and complications. The prevalence of Neisseria gonorrheae (NG) and Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) infection among Filipino HIV patients is unknown and screening is not universal. A symptom-based approach likely underestimates the prevalence of NG and CT among men who have sex with men (MSM). We determined the rectal, pharyngeal, and urethral prevalence of gonorrhea and chlamydia infection in our patient population using nucleic acid testing (NAT). Methods This is a single-center, prospective cross-sectional study at Philippine General Hospital. Following ethical approval and informed consent, pharyngeal, rectal, and urine samples from newly-diagnosed, treatment-naïve HIV adult patients were tested using the Xpert® CT/NG assay (Cepheid, Sunnydale, CA). Patients with recent (≤21 days) antibiotic use with activity against NG or CT were excluded. Demographic and clinical data were also collected. Results 46 subjects were enrolled. Mean age was 31 years (range 19–49), 83% (38/46) were male, 96% (44/46) were asymptomatic, and 92% (35/38) of the males were MSM. Median CD4 count was 225 cells/μL (range 0–1,335). The overall prevalence of CT/NG was 33% (15/46). Table 1 shows the prevalence of CT and NG by site. Four patients had both genital and rectal CT. More patients had rectal NG/CT compared with urethral and pharyngeal sites. No gonorrhea was found in the urine specimens; no chlamydia was found in the pharynx. Conclusion The prevalence of CT and NG among newly diagnosed Filipino HIV patients at 33% is sufficiently high to warrant routine NAT screening. Urine testing alone will miss a significant number of cases in an MSM-predominant population. We recommend NAT screening of both urethral and rectal sites for newly-diagnosed Filipino HIV patients. Abstract:
The notion of wheel spinning, students getting stuck in the mastery learning cycle of an ITS without mastering the skill, is an emerging issue. Although wheel spinning has been analyzed, there has been little work in understanding what factors underlie it, and whether it occurs in cultural contexts outside that of the United States. This work is an extension of an earlier analysis of 116 students in an urban setting in the Philippines. The authors found that Filipino students using the Scatterplot Tutor exhibited wheel spinning behaviors. The authors explored the impact of an intervention, Scooter the Tutor, on wheel spinning behavior and did not find that it had any effect. They also analyzed data from quantitative field observations, and found that wheel spinning is prevented by engaged concentration, caused by confusion, but not causally related to boredom. This result suggests that the problem of wheel spinning is primarily cognitive in nature, and not related to student motivation. However, wheel spinning was positively correlated with gaming the system, and causal analysis suggests that wheel spinning causes gaming.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the quality of social relationships of older Filipino church members by determining their perceptions of support and non-support in their social network. Design/methodology/approach A qualitative research approach with semi-structured interviews was utilized. A purposive sample of six Filipino older adults (ages 60-89) were invited and agreed to participate in the study. Findings The themes found in the study confirmed the types of support outlined in social convoy theory. Several unique nuances in the types of support and non-support between the interactions of older adult Filipinos with people very close to them, somewhat close to them, and merely acquainted with them were identified. The themes of support include instrumental support, emotional care, social connectedness, and companionship during engagement in activities. Themes characterising lack of support include disrespect and lack of understanding, constraining one’s actions, helplessness in responding to the other’s needs, non-dependability and non-reliability, difficulty in maintaining social connections, making it difficult to play a desired or expected role. Research limitations/implications The study’s limitations are the small sample size, the quality of support explored only through nominating two members of each level of closeness in the older adults’ social convoy, sample size adequacy to reach data saturation, and the lack of data on support reciprocity that may influence the respondents’ perceptions of support and non-support. Practical implications The findings of the paper point to possible interventions to improve social support for the older population. The road map for those interested in developing interventions should also put some emphasis on older adults’ needs in their continued societal engagement. Interventions may involve facilitating role transitions and providing social support systems attuned to the needs of the elderly. Social implications The authors speculate that this lack of support experienced by the older adults relates to the loss of societal roles, especially as this relates to their identity, meaning, and changes in social interactions within their communities. It is therefore important that interventions be planned to provide structures for older adults’ transitions in their re-engagement in society and into the work-force, thereby reducing this sense of role ambiguity and providing them with more positive identities in their communities. Originality/value The results suggest another form of support distinct from the emotional and instrumental support elaborated in previous work. This support is identified as companionship from within the social network that allows older adults to sustain engagement in meaningful activities. The study’s results further suggest a lack of clarity in societal roles, i.e. a sense of role ambiguity, which older adults may experience in the transitioning from adulthood to later adulthood.

Abstract:
PurposeThis work explores the creation and purposes of an inquiry about Emilio Aguinaldo, a Filipino revolutionary and sometimes United States ally, as a means to discuss the value of both inquiry and historical empathy in bridging history instruction and civic life. Though history is often identified as a means to foster democratic dispositions, learning can often feel disconnected from students' lived experiences, let alone directly connect to their out-of-classroom circumstances. Teaching with historical empathy allows students to affectively engage with content, resulting in complex reasoning and content acquisition.Design/methodology/approachThe authors explain an original inquiry that uses the Inquiry Design Model (IDM) and historical empathy to help students complicate Emilio Aguinaldo and his legacy. By combining historical empathy and the inquiry model, the authors structured their work for practitioner use but also as a way to draw on rarely emphasized content in US or World history courses.FindingsIn using this model, students will be able to apply their learning in a civic engagement task related to modern questions of US geopolitics.Originality/valueThe authors offer and explore the process of an original inquiry as a way to help practitioners and scholars consider how to create other such rigorous opportunities for students to practice global citizenship.

Abstract:
This inquiry sought to discover the images of women as portrayed in the contemporary short stories entitled “Fallout” by Maria L.M. Fres-Felix and “Language” by Sunantha Mendoza. Feminist Literary Criticism, specifically liberal, radical, Freudian, socio-cultural, stereotypical feminist perspective were employed to critically analyze the actions and feminist perspective of the female characters. The study attempted to meet the following objectives: 1) to describe the images of women as depicted by the authors in the stories; 2) to identify the dominant devices used in the stories; and, 3) to determine the feminist themes conveyed in the stories. Through examining and analyzing the short stories, different images of women were discovered. The close textual reading resulted in the researcher’s coming up with the following findings: female characters are portrayed as involved, sophisticated, strong-minded, competitive, independent and unconventional. The dominant devices are symbols, juxtaposition, foreshadowing, imagery, idiom, metaphor, irony and figures of speech were effectively utilized in the stories to probe the images of women that are found in each story. Indeed, women will come a long way in facing the battle against patriarchal values.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT In a guideline, the global brand company is broadly positioned around the world. In case the brand could be a premium estimated brand, it could be a premium cost around the world. The application of a global brand ought to too be indivisible from the part of the branding and key communication that makes difference in companies entering the domain of other countries. But what makes a brand profitable and how profitable is it? What could be a global brand and why are there still neighborhood brands? The spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in Southeast Asia, made global business lines run slowly and had to force business people to rack their brains to survive during a pandemic. The establishment of a lockdown policy has also hampered the distribution of retail goods as one of the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, it is different from Alfamart, which was able to survive during the pandemic with a decrease in net profit at the end of the third quarter of 2020 with a fairly small figure of -1.85% (Hafiyyan, 2020a). One of the strategies revealed is the expansion of Alfamart received a positive response in the Philippines competing 7-Eleven, Mini-Stop, Allday, Family Mart, and Lawson. So throughout 2020 Alfamart managed to open more than 1.000 new stores in Metro Manila and nearby province. The global brand communication strategy used by Alfamart to deliver strong brand awareness to Filipino customer mind and made Alfamart's brand positioning as a super minimart that serves the community. According to the above exposures, Alfamart is considered a successful brand in Indonesia that expand its global retail business in Southeast Asia since the COVID-19 pandemic that spread throughout the world. It is exciting research, Alfamart has not become the primary choice of consumers to shop at minimart or convenience stores in the Indonesian market itself. It is also inseparable from the brand communication strategy used by Alfamart to build strong brand awareness in Filipino consumers' minds. This research method is the case study, continuing to data analysis using the pattern matching of the informant insights and findings. The authors focus on describing the strategy of Alfamart Philippines to communicate its brand awareness in the community. Then, analyze the pattern matching of Filipino customers’ perceived brand of Alfamart through interviews with informants. The research findings are that Alfamart has expanded rapidly to open more than 1.200 stores since 2014 to help the community at Barangay (a remote area of the Philippines) for jobs and serve groceries product especially frozen food so that Alfamart become an "extended pantry" to their home. Alfamart’s accessibility and brand positioning as super minimart for Filipino customers built strong brand awareness as a global brand from Indonesia.

Abstract:
Abstract Background Doravirine, rilpivirine, and etravirine are newer generation non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTI) that are intended to be more durable alternatives to efavirenz and nevirapine. We examined transmitted drug resistance (TDR) and acquired drug resistance (ADR) to NNRTIs from recent local TDR and ADR data to determine whether these can be useful as first-line or second-line antiretroviral (ARV) agents. Methods We reanalyzed Sanger-Based sequences (SBS) from an ADR surveillance study; and SBS and near-whole-genome next-generation sequences (NGS) from a TDR surveillance study using the Stanford HIV Drug Resistance Database. Results ADR: Out of 513 Filipino PLHIV from an ADR surveillance study on one year of ARV treatment, 53 (10.3%) failed (HIV VL >1,000 copies/mL). Among these, 48 had clinically significant mutations. Table 1 shows NNRTI ADR frequencies. There was no significant ADR difference between first-generation and newer generation NNRTIs. TDR: 298 treatment-naïve Filipino PLHIV underwent baselines sequencing. All 298 had SBS. 266 had successful NGS. Table 1 shows SBS and NGS TDR NNRTI resistance at a 5% minor variant cutoff. There was no significant TDR difference between first-generation and newer generation NNRTIs. Conclusion ADR and TDR rates to the newer NNRTIs are similar to first-generation NNRTIs. High TDR to doravirine on NGS is concerning, but its clinical significance is unclear. Etravirine had the lowest TDR and ADR and may be the most useful new-generation NNRTI. However, integrase strand transfer inhibitor-based regimens will likely be more durable. Disclosures All authors: No reported disclosures.

Abstract:
This study evaluates housing affordability using other methods beyond the standard 30 percent income benchmark. By employing the Housing Affordability Index, which considers median family income and average housing prices, the authors find that most Filipino households are income-constrained in purchasing homes. Using the residual income method alongside the 30 percent income standard reveals that the latter overestimates affordability for poorer households, with housing stress particularly evident among low-income groups. The study highlights that socialized and economic housing projects are increasingly situated on the urban fringes, limiting housing options for low- and middle-income households in cities. With residential prices outpacing income growth, the government faces two key objectives: improving housing conditions for poor and vulnerable households and curbing speculative increases in property prices. Proposed solutions include innovative housing interventions and regulatory measures to control property market speculation and ensure affordability.

Abstract: The Philippines has always been a marginal topic in Hispanic Studies. However, between 1868 and 1936, there was a relevant amount of literary production in Spanish about and from the ex colony. It had some political and cultural importance as well. Filiteratura has been created in order to make this literature visible and to set the grounds for a History of Literature in Spanish from and about the Philippines. It is a relational database built on Heurist that gathers filipiniana literature, that is, works in Spanish published in the Philippines (by Filipinos or by other nationals), and works in Spanish about the Philippines published in any other place in the world, between 1850 and 1973. The relational database connects with several libraries and online repositories to facilitate the access and study of these works. It also includes information related to other components of the literary field such as newspapers, publishers and literary awards to which authors and works are connected. This allows a reconstruction of the literary field around the Philippine and linkages with other projects about bibliography, periodical press and translation in the hispanic world.

Abstract:
Myoepithelial tumours are a rare form of salivary gland neoplasm, and their occurrence in the central nervous system is exceedingly rare. The authors report the case of an 18-year-old Filipino man presenting with headache and weakness, and on imaging showing an extensive parasagittal tumour at the left posterior parietal area with extracalvarial extension. There was no systemic disease. The patient underwent surgery to excise the tumour, with histopathology showing findings consistent with myoepithelioma. There was no further treatment, given the benign histology of the lesion, but there was recurrence after 8 months. Repeat surgery was done for the patient and he is for adjuvant radiotherapy. This appears to be the 10th reported case of a central nervous myoepithelioma, and the first case in the Philippines of a primary parasagittal myoepithelioma in a paediatric patient. Further information is needed to provide diagnostic and therapeutic recommendations.

Abstract:
Background: Malignant pheochromocytoma is a rare neuroendocrine tumor that may metastasize to the bones, liver, lungs, kidneys, and lymph nodes. Cerebral and skull metastases are even rarer, with only 17 cases reported in the literature. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first reported case of a purely calvarial metastasis from malignant pheochromocytoma associated with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2A (MEN2A). Case Description: A 31-year-old Filipino man diagnosed with MEN2A was found to have elevated urine metanephrine on routine surveillance, and workup revealed right adrenal and hepatic masses and a focus of intense tracer accumulation on the right frontal bone on metaiodobenzylguanidine I-123 scan. All the newly discovered lesions were resected to achieve tumor control. Histopathology revealed a diagnosis of pheochromocytoma for the calvarial lesion. Conclusion: Malignant pheochromocytoma may give rise to indolent metastatic foci that can easily be missed without a thorough examination. Misdiagnosis and delays in management of this disease can be detrimental, resulting in irreversible complications and death.

Abstract:
Abstract Background Small non-coding microRNAs (miRNAs) are increasingly recognized as key regulators of the host response to sepsis. However, the molecular mechanisms implicated in the role of miRNAs during sepsis progression is still unclear. It is hypothesized that differentially expressed genes in septic patients with worse outcomes are associated with dysregulation of miRNA expression. This study aimed to identify specific miRNA-gene pairs that may be implicated in the development of shock and renal failure in sepsis. Methods miRNA from serum and RNA from PBMCs were acquired from n = 40 participants in a prospective cohort of Filipino septic patients: n = 15 developed septic shock and n = 17 developed renal failure. RT-qPCR was done to measure the expression of 21 sepsis-associated miRNAs. Differentially expressed miRNAs (DEMs) for each outcome was identified, followed by gene target prediction for each DEM. Gene expression microarrays covering 18,616 genes were also performed to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs; P < 0.05, log FC> |0.3|) for each outcome. Significant miRNA-gene pairs were selected by evaluating the overlap of the predicted gene targets of the DEMs with the DEGs for each corresponding outcome. Given the gene-silencing mechanism of miRNAs, overlap analysis was performed on only the downregulated DEGs when the specific DEM was upregulated (and vice versa). Results Septic participants who developed shock, compared with those who did not, had higher expression of 1 DEM, miR-223-5p, and downregulation of 20 DEGs. NUS1 was the only predicted gene target of miR-223-5p that was also downregulated in septic shock. Participants who developed renal failure, vs. those who did not, had lower expression 6 DEMs and upregulation of 6 DEGs. KPNA4 is a gene target of the DEMs, miR-126-5p, and miR-181a-5p, that was also upregulated in renal failure. Conclusion Significant miRNA–gene pairs related to worse clinical outcomes in sepsis were identified: miR-223-5p with NUS1 for shock and either miR-126-5p or miR-181-5p with KPNA4 for renal failure. While the biological significance of these miRNA-gene pairs still needs to be evaluated, these findings can potentially help future efforts in developing prognostic markers or therapeutic targets for shock and renal failure in sepsis. Abstract:
Several studies have identified inconsistencies between “stated” interpersonal attitudes and those “revealed” after an interaction. The authors used the speed-dating paradigm to examine stated and revealed attitudes in ingroup preferences among Asian American subgroups (Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, and Filipino Americans). Young single Asian Americans ( n = 198) reported preferences for dating different ethnicities and went on speed dates, after which they could offer second dates to their partners. As expected, all four ethnic subgroups showed clear ingroup biases in stated preferences. Ingroup bias in revealed preferences (measured through date offers and ratings of partners’ mate desirability), however, were minimal. At the individual level, stated ingroup preferences did not significantly predict revealed ingroup preferences. In summary, among young Asian Americans, ingroup preferences may not hold in an interactive scenario. The findings suggest that in the presence of personal cues provided through a brief interaction, people may be less prone to make judgments on the basis of ethnicity, even when consequences extend beyond the laboratory. Furthermore, mechanisms for selecting a partner may differ in “hot” (affective) versus “cold” (cognitive) states.

In this 30th anniversary of AIDS Education and Prevention, we turn our attention to its founder and editor, Dr. Francisco Sy. I trace Dr. Sy's trajectory, from growing up in a Filipino-Chinese family in Manila to Harvard, Johns Hopkins, South Carolina, and then to the journal. The loss of friends and colleagues to the AIDS epidemic stands out as Sy's driving force behind the journal. AIDS Education and Prevention was also created to fill a tremendous gap in the field: a scientific platform to circulate and discuss research on HIV and AIDS prevention. Over its life course, the content of the journal has mirrored the life of epidemic. Initially, the articles focused on knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors, mostly in the United States. Now, the articles deal with health interventions and pre-exposure prophylaxis, with authors coming from all over the globe. In Sy's opinion, HIV will become endemic, as other infectious diseases have over our history of epidemics, so the role of journals such as AIDS Education and Prevention will remain vital.

Abstract:
Abstract Objectives The objective of this study was to predict the intervention scenarios that best fulfil the nutrient adequacy in Filipino complementary diets in rural settings using linear programming (LP) analyses of special fortified foods, alone or in combination with complementary feeding recommendations (CFRs). Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted in the municipality of Mercedes, Camarines Norte Province. Dietary intakes of breastfed children 6–8, 9–11 and 12–23 months of age (n = 297) were assessed using a multi-pass 24-hour recall method with 7-day food consumption frequency. Optifood, an LP tool was used to formulate age-specific CFRs and determine the extent to which special fortified foods, namely micronutrient powder (MNP), small-quantity lipid-based nutrient supplements (LNS-SQ) and fortified blended food with micronutrient powder (FBF + MNP), can contribute towards nutrient adequacy in complementary diets. Results LP analyses show that for 6–8 and 9–11-month-old infants, requirements for iron will be difficult to meet even with four serves of MNP per week, while for 9–11 and 12–23-month-old young children, calcium adequacy would remain a challenge even with daily serves of LNS-SQ per week. Adequacy for 11 modelled micronutrients could only be achieved if CFRs that modify current dietary patterns were fully adopted along with supplementation of LNS-SQ 5–7 times per week. Conclusions Adoption of food-based CFRs with special fortified products is necessary to best fulfil the gaps of essential micronutrients in the diets of rural Filipino children aged 6–23 months. The findings provide insight into the current program in the Philippines. The MNP supplementation with the usual ration of MNP 3 to 4 times per week would not be sufficient to ensure adequacy for iron in 6–8 and 9–11-month-old infants unless the frequency is increased to 5 times per week. Empirical intervention studies are needed to confirm the LP simulations and feasibility of the CFRs. Funding Sources The authors received no funding for this work.

Abstract:
The Philippines resoundingly cried ‘never again’ to the horrors of the Marcos dictatorship through the People Power revolution of 1986. Thirty years later, the Filipino people have come to realise that success is indeed fleeting. On 18 November 2016, the remains of Philippine dictator Ferdinand E. Marcos were buried in the Libingan ng mga Bayani—the Heroes’ Cemetery. While the Philippine Supreme Court insists that the hero’s burial conferred to the author of the nation’s darkest chapter is a political question, from established doctrines here and abroad, the authors seek to derive the political answer. This article will look at the legitimacy of memory laws within the Philippine Constitutional framework. Finding guidance from the Auschiwtz lie case of the German Constitutional Court, the article seeks to combat historical revisionism and prohibit the Marcosian lie. Our research begins by looking at the resurgence of authoritarianism as seen through the populist presidency of Rodrigo Roa Duterte. We will then proceed to address the threshold issue of state-sanctioned narratives. Recognising that the duty to establish the truth involves the power to determine the narrative, the authors will reconcile the conflicting demands of the freedom of thought and the right to the truth. We will then proceed by utilising the fact-opinion distinction to demonstrate how the Marcosian lie may be the valid subject of regulation. The last phase of the research looks into the approaches adopted by the United Nations (un) Human Rights Committee and the European Court of Human Rights in dealing with negationism and historical revisionism.

Abstract:
Objective: As there is a dearth of information on phyllodes tumors of the breast in the Philippines yet this ultimately impacts on the management and survival of Filipino patients, the authors reviewed their surgical cases of phyllodes tumors, focusing in this report, for the first time in Philippine literature, on the real risk of distant metastasis from the more common benign variety of phyllodes tumors. They therefore aim to identify case/s and do a review of literature on distant metastasis from benign phyllodes tumors. Methods: A review of records of all surgical cases of phyllodes tumor managed at PGH from 2005 – 2014 was done. Data from patients who on follow up were found to have distant metastasis were gathered and further reviewed. A literature search on metastatic phyllodes tumor and its implications was likewise done to complete this study. Results: A total of 200 patients with phyllodes tumor surgically managed within the study period were reviewed and followed up. One hundred sixty one out of 200 (80.5%) patients were histologically classified as benign. Twelve patients out of 200 (6.0%) developed distant metastasis on follow up, 1 (0.62% of 161 benign phyllodes tumors) of whom had benign phyllodes tumor. Conclusion: The authors show that distant metastasis from benign phyllodes tumor can occur here in the Philippines. Therefore, the subtype of phyllodes tumor alone, especially in benign lesions, does not absolutely predict biological behavior and risk of recurrence. A better understanding of the true nature of metastasis in these tumors is highly anticipated. Key words: Breast surgery, Phyllodes, metastasis, benign

Abstract:
A first review of the history, status, and prospects for Philippine herpetology conducted more than two decades ago (2002) summarized the diverse topics studied and highlighted the development and achievements in research up to the year 2000. This study revisits and re-assesses what Philippine herpetology has accomplished, both as a discipline and a community, during the last two decades (2002–2022). A total of 423 herpetological publications was collated, revealing a substantial increase in annual publications, rising from approximately four per year during 2002–2008 to around 28 per year in 2009–2022. Half of the published studies focused on squamate reptiles (lizards 30.5%, snakes 21%) and 28.4% on amphibians, 5.9% on turtles, and 2.6% on crocodiles. The remaining 11.6% of studies focused simultaneously on multiple taxa (i.e., faunal inventories). Diversity and distribution (35.2%) and ecological (26.5%) studies remained popular, while studies on taxonomy (14.9%), phylogenetics and biogeography (11.8%), and conservation (11.6%) all increased. However, geographical gaps persist urging immediate surveys in many understudied regions of the country. Finally, we found a balanced representation between Filipino and foreign first authors (1.0:1.1), yet a substantial gender gap exists between male and female first authors (7.1:1.0). Nonetheless, the steep increase in publications and the diversity of people engaged in Philippine herpetology is a remarkable positive finding compared to the 20 years preceding the last review (1980–2000). Our hope is that the next decades will bring increasingly equitable, internationally collaborative, and broadly inclusive engagement in the study of amphibians and reptiles in the Philippines.

Abstract:
When educational institutions worldwide scrambled for ways to continue their classes during lockdowns caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the use of information and communication technology (ICT) for remote teaching has become widely considered to be a potential solution. As universities raced to implement emergency remote teaching (ERT) strategies in Japan, some have explored innovative interventions other than webinar platforms and learning management systems to bridge the gap caused by restricted mobility among teachers and learners. One such innovation is virtual reality (VR). VR has been changing the landscape of higher education because of its ability to "teleport" learners to various places by simulating real-world environments in the virtual world. Some teachers, including the authors of this paper, explored integrating VR into their activities to address issues caused by geographical limitations brought about by the heightened restrictions in 2020. Results were largely encouraging. However, rules started relaxing in the succeeding years as more people got vaccinated. Thus, some fully online classes in Japan shifted to blended learning as they moved toward fully returning to in-person classes prompting educators to modify how they implemented their VR-based interventions. This paper describes how a class of university students in Japan who were taking a Filipino language course experienced a VR-based intervention in blended mode, which was originally prototyped during the peak of the ERT era. Moreover, adjustments and comparisons regarding methodological idiosyncrasies and findings between the fully online iteration and the recently implemented blended one are reported in detail. Abstract:
Background: We re-trace our liberatory journey in developing a Critical Framework of Review to evaluate K-12 Filipina/x/o American curricula. Our framework is rooted in our positionality and epistemology as Filipina educational scholars engaged in confronting oppression that impacts our community. It responds to the need for evaluation methods grounded in culturally responsive and critical pedagogies. Purpose: The purpose is to provide a critical and cultural method of evaluation to assess curriculum and pedagogy of, by, and about our communities. Setting: The research takes place in the Filipinx/a/o American community in the United States. The authors are from three academic institutions in California, Hawai‘i and the Philippines. Intervention: Our Critical Framework of Review attempts to counter the predominance of Eurocentric, male, objective, and uncritical models of curricula evaluation. Research design: This research deconstructs how we developed and applied our framework, which was used to evaluate thirty-three Filipina/x/o American K-12 curricula in critical content, critical instruction, and critical impact, by asking 20 questions that reflected critical and cultural theories and pedagogies. Data collection and analysis: We asked: Who and what informed our evaluation framework? How was it developed? How do we use it? How could our framework be further applied? We referenced diverse scholars and used critical race, feminist, indigenous, and deolonizing pedagogies as guidelines to establish our evaluation framework and standards. Findings: The framework is an example of standards-based and responsive-based evaluation with a checklist of indicators to evaluate curricula for culture, race, positionality, and social justice. Although created for Filipina/x/o, the framework can be used to evaluate curriculum for other marginalized groups. Abstract:
Abstract Background Infections caused by Extended-Spectrum B-lactamases (ESBL) organisms are an emerging health concern worldwide. In the background of progressive rise of antibiotic resistant organisms, efforts should be started to minimize antibiotic resistance. The development of clinical risk score models to predict the possibility of infection with these drug resistant organisms will bridge the gap between treating too late and treating too early and too much. Methods This is a single-center cross-sectional study of ESBL positive urinary tract infection (UTI) among patients admitted at St Luke’s Medical Center - Global City from January 2018 to December 2018. A total of 93 patients positive for ESBL-positive UTI and 186 patients with ESBL-negative UTI were included in the study. Clinical characteristics, medical and medication histories were obtained from the computerized medical database. To develop the risk score, clinical risk indicators measured at the time of recruitment were built by logistic regression. Regression coefficients were transformed into item scores and added up to a total score. A risk-scoring scheme was developed from clinical predictors. Results The following factors were observed to be predictive of ESBL UTI: hospital-acquired or healthcare-associated infection, prior ESBL infection, cardiac comorbidity and history of carbapenem intake. Scoring for the predictive model is as follows: having age at least 50 years old=1.5, hospital-acquired or healthcare-associated infection=1, having prior ESBL infection=2, having cardiac comorbidity (NYHA I-II)=1, having cardiac comorbidity (NYHA III-IV)=2.5, and history of carbapenem intake=3. ROC analysis showed that the optimum cut point in the model predictive of ESBL is 3.5/10. The risk prediction model for ESBL had high sensitivity of 87%, medium specificity of 68%, and good predictive accuracy of 0.78. Conclusion A simple and non-invasive scoring scheme of three predictors provides good prediction indices for presence of ESBL organisms in patients diagnosed with UTI. However, a large sample study is needed to improve the power of the study. Validation studies are also needed. Disclosures All Authors: No reported disclosures

Abstract:
Through an analysis of three “hauntings” that spanned the sixteenth to twenty-first centuries, this article highlights recurring instances of Hokkien political maneuvering when the possibility of an autonomous Fujian or maritime-based Hokkien empire threatened the contrasting imperial and national missions of Spanish, Chinese, and Filipinos in the region. The first haunting occurred in the Spanish-controlled Philippines from the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries when the imagined threat of an invasion from China led to reactionary pogroms and a schizophrenic Spanish China-policy. The second haunting occurred in the early twentieth century when Chinese nation-makers were challenged by a nascent Hokkien nationalism that threatened to tear Fujian from China. The final haunting took place in the pages of novels and history books from the Philippines in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries; Filipino authors attempted to create and reinforce a stereotyped image of Chinese as apolitical business-minded people. (This article is in English).

Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to present a panel data econometric model of the main determinants of house prices in the ten largest census metropolitan areas (CMA) in Ontario, Canada, for the years 2001, 2006 and 2011. The impact of immigration on the housing market in Canada is little researched; however, immigration plays an important role into the economy of Canada. According to Statistics Canada, not only is immigration key to Canada’s population growth but also without immigration, in the next 20 years, Canada’s population growth will be zero. The motivation for this study is the bursting of housing bubbles in some developed countries (e.g. USA). The authors analyze variables that are related to the immigration policy in Canada, accounting also for the impact of the interest rate, income, unemployment, household size and housing supply to analyze housing price determinants. The study investigates the magnitude of the impact of the top three leading categories of immigrants to Canada, namely, Chinese, Indian and Filipino, on the housing prices in Ontario’s largest cities. The results show the main factors that explain home prices over time that are interest rate, immigration, unemployment rate, household size and income. Over the 10-year period from 2001 to 2011, immigration grew by 400 per cent in Toronto CMA, the largest receiving area in Ontario, while the nonimmigrant population grew by 14 per cent. For Toronto CMA, immigrants, income, unemployment rate and interest rate explain the CA$158,875 average home price increase over the 2001-2011 time period. Out of this, the three categories of immigrants’ share of total home price increase is 54.57 per cent, with the corresponding interest rate share 58.60 per cent and income share 11.32 per cent of the total price growth. Unemployment rate contributes negatively to the housing price and its share of the total price increase is 24.49 per cent. Design/methodology/approach The framework for the empirical analysis applies the hedonic pricing model theory to housing sales prices for the ten largest CMAs in Ontario over the years 2001-2011. Following Akbari and Aydede (2012) and O’Meara (2015), market clearing in the housing market results in the housing price as a function of several housing attributes. The authors selected the housing attributes based on data availability for the Canadian Census years of 2001, 2006 and 2011 and the variables that have been most used in the literature. The model has the average housing prices as the dependent variable, and the independent variables are: immigrants per dwelling (Chinese, Indian, and Filipino), unemployment rate, average employment income, household size, housing supply and the interest rate. To capture the relative scarcity of dwellings, the independent variable immigrants per dwelling was used. Findings This study seems to suggest that one cause of high prices in Ontario is large inflows of immigrants together with low mortgage interest rate. The authors focused their attention on Toronto CMA, as it is the main destination of immigrants and comprises the largest cities, including Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton and Oakville. Looking over the 10-year period from 2001 to 2011, the authors can see the factors that impact the home prices in Toronto CMA: immigration, unemployment rate, household size, interest rate and income. Over the period of 10 years from 2001 to 2011, immigrants’ group from China, India and the Philippines account for CA$86,701 increase in the home price (54.57 per cent share of the total increase). Income accounts for CA$17,986 increase in the home price (11.32 per cent share); interest rate accounts for CA$93,103 of the average home price increase in Toronto CMA (58.60 per cent share); and unemployment rate accounts for CA$38,916 decrease in the Toronto average home prices (24.49 per cent share). Household size remain stable over time in Toronto (2.8 average household size) and does not have a contribution to home price change. All these four factors, interest rate, immigrants, unemployment rate and income, together explain CA$158,875 increase in home prices in Toronto CMA between 2001 and 2011. Practical implications The housing market price analysis may be more complex, and there may be factors impacting the housing prices extending beyond immigration, interest rate, income and household size. Finally, the results of this paper can be extended to include the most recent census data for the year 2016 to reflect more accurately the price situation in the housing market for Ontario cities. Social implications The fact that currently, in 2017, the young working population cannot afford buying a property in the Toronto CMA area means there is a problem with this market and a corresponding decrease in the quality of life. According to The Globe and Mail (July 2017), a new pool in 2017 suggested that two in five Canadians believe housing in this country is not affordable for them. Further, 38 per cent of respondents who consider themselves middle or upper class believe in no affordability of housing. The Trudeau Government promised Canadians a national housing strategy for affordable housing. Designing a national housing strategy may be challenging because it has to account for the differential income ranges across regions. Municipal leaders are asking the government to prioritize repair and construct new affordable housing. Another reason discussed in the media of the unaffordability of housing in Toronto and Vancouver is foreign buyers. The Canadian Government recently implemented a tax measure on what it may seem the housing bubble problem: foreign buyers. Following Vancouver, in April 2017, Ontario Government imposed a 15 per cent tax on foreign buyers who are not Canadian citizens or permanent residents. This tax is levied on houses purchased in the area stretching from Niagara Region and Greater Toronto to Peterborough. Originality/value Few studies use Canadian data to explain house prices and analyze the effect of immigration on housing prices. There is not much research on the effect of the immigrants and immigrants’ ethnicity (e.g., Chinese, Indian and Filipino immigrants), on the housing prices in Canada cities. This study investigates the impact of the most prevalent immigrant races (e.g., from China, India and the Philippines) on housing prices, using data for Canadian major cities in Ontario within a panel data econometric framework. This paper fills this gap and contributes to the literature, which analyzes the determinants of housing prices based on a panel of cities in the Canadian province of Ontario.

Abstract:
Abstract Background The Philippines has the fastest growing HIV epidemic in the Asia-Pacific. Concurrent with this is a subtype shift from B to CRF01_AE. We have previously documented transmitted drug resistance (TDR) locally. However, the lack of drug pressure and the insensitivity of Sanger-based sequencing (SBS) may leave archived drug-resistance mutations (DRMs) undetected. To better detect TDR, we performed next-generation sequencing (NGS) on treatment-naïve patients and compared this with SBS. Methods Following ethics approval, newly-diagnosed adult Filipino HIV patients were recruited from the Philippine General Hospital HIV treatment hub. Demographic data were collected, and blood samples underwent SBS with a WHO-approved protocol. Whole-genome NGS was performed using Illumina HiSeq through a commercial provider (Macrogen, Korea). Genotype and DRMs were analyzed and scored using the Stanford HIV Drug Resistance Database. Results 113 patients were analyzed. Median age was 29 years (range 19–68), mean CD4 count was 147 cells/µL (range 0–556) and median viral load was 2.8 × 106 copies/mL. Genotype distribution was: CRF01_AE (93), B (13), possible CRF01_AE/B recombinants (5), CRF02_AG (1), possible URF (1). TDR prevalence by SBS and NGS at different minority variant cutoffs are shown in Table 1. All DRMs on SBS were found on NGS. Some samples had multiple DRMs. No factors were significantly associated with TDR, genotype, viral load or baseline CD4 count. Conclusion NGS is a more sensitive tool for detecting TDR compared with SBS. Nearly double the DRMs were found at an NGS cutoff of ≥5%, including INSTI DRMs. With increasing HIV drug resistance worldwide, switching to NGS may help decrease rates of initial treatment failure, especially in settings with limited repertoires of ARVs. Abstract:
This research study provides the first comprehensive and critical literature review of K–12 Filipina/o American curricula found in formal and informal educational settings. Thirty-three Filipina/o American curricula representing a diverse array of authors, audiences, content, and pedagogical approaches were reviewed. The authors of this study developed a “Critical Framework of Review” rooted in critical pedagogy in order to analyze the historical development of Filipina/o American curricula along with an analysis of major topics, concepts, guiding theoretical frameworks, pedagogical approaches, and outcomes. The review concludes with a discussion and summary of the overarching themes of Filipina/o curricular content, instruction, and impact gained from this study and recommendations for the application, development, distribution, and research of more Filipina/o American K–12 curriculum resources.
