Full textThis study shows how limestone reacts in the hydration of tricalcium aluminate and silicate, main constituents of Portland cement. The effect of limestone is characterized for different hydration times with different analytical techniques: XRD, SEM, DSC, TGA, 29Si NMR and IR Portland cement hydration gives a pH equal to 12 to 13, so in the first part of this study, limestone solubility in basic solutions is investigated. In the second part, we show the incorporation of coexistence of these phases, the formation of solid solutions CxSyCuHz-CH occurs. Third, C3A hydration with or without limestone agrees with litterature. Endly, we study the hydration of a simple cement (C3S + C3A) with or without calcium carbonate and CaSO4. Formation of CxSyAtCuHz ,ettringite, C4ACH11 and portlandite are noted. The cohabitation of these phases entail the existence of chemical complexes and substitued ettringite. The effect of different atmospheres on the samples is also studied

Full textThe replacement of a part of the cement part in concrete with a mineral addition is a common practice for many years. In France, because of its high availability and lower cost, the most used addition is limestone filler. For the design of self-compacting concrete, a high volume of mineral addition is necessary in order to reduce the amount of cement induced by the increase in the volume of paste required for the flow of the concrete. Industry practices refer to occasional disturbances often attributed to the nature of the limestone filler. Faced with this problem, an experimental program has been implemented in order to determine the responsibility of the filler in the behavior of fresh cement mixtures. Focused on the mineral addition, this research was initially supported by a full characterization of dry limestone filler. Then, these fillers were inserted into cementitious mixtures increasingly complex in order to determine their mechanisms of action in contact with the various components of concrete (i. E. Cement, chemical admixture and aggregates). Finally, this study led to the development of a design method taking into account the properties of limestone fillers and especially their interactions with cement and chemical admixture through the characterization of the wet packing density of the paste. Based on the maximal packing density, it is possible to determine a thickness of water around the particles from which, for a given cement nature, the flow properties become similar regardless of the quantity and the nature of the filler in the experimental context. Then, these cement pastes are combined with aggregates, for which the water demand was precisely optimized, to design self-compacting concrete

Full textThe reduction of carbon dioxide emissions related to cement production is a key point for industry today. About 60% of these emissions are chemical and issued from a crucial step in cement production: clinkerization. One of the solutions to reduce carbon dioxide emissions associated with concrete is the substitution of clinker by other materials. Since some decades, scientific community is particularly interested to the use of calcined clays (and specifically metakaolin) as supplementary cementitious materials (SCM). The combination of such materials with limestone filler is very promising in terms of mechanical properties. This study aims at demonstrate that the results obtained with a clay composed of illite and kaolinite before calcination are equivalent to those observed with a clay containing only kaolinite. Through a multi-scale approach, this work shows that the use of a pure clay is not necessary. In the case of ternary binders, hydrate assemblage is similar with one or the other clay. Performance-based approach is adopted for the qualification of durability indicators for concrete containing such binders and carbonation of these concretes must be given attention. Results in this study are encouraging and promising for the industrial use of composite calcined clays in cements

Full textThis study concerns the Tunisian granular resources, of limestone type, in the hydraulic mixtures. The used materials outcoming from the careers of Aïn Tebournouk, Nahli, Jbel Ressas, El Haoureb, Jradou and Tahent which have to feed the principal centers of consumption of the area of Tunis and the coastal zone of Center-East. The analyzed properties are the compressive and the tensile strengths and the elastic modulus. The recent models of the French LCPC were used to predict these properties. They do not always give satisfactory results, in particular if the mixtures are rich in fine elements, as it is often the case of the aggregates outcoming from careers. The mortars, micro-concretes and concretes carried out within the framework of this study made it possible to propose an extension of these models. For the compressive strength, the bond coefficient was associated with the content of fillers aggregates. The assumption is that the presence of these fine elements, of comparable nature that the aggregates, improves adherence paste and aggregate, thanks to bringing together the properties of rigidity of the two materials. For the tensile strength, a model describes by a hyperbolic law made it possible to provide a physical interpretation to the tensile strength behavior of the hydraulic mixtures. Its parameters are linked to the aggregate strength and cohesion in the paste-aggregate transition zone. Finally for the elastic modulus, the use of the model of the LCPC, which takes into account the properties of the granular phase and the binding phase, made it possible to reach the modulus of elasticity of some aggregates

Full textThe objective of this work is to study the effect of the quantity of fillers on the rheological, mechanical and dimensional properties of calcareous concretes. These concretes were made with the same coarse aggregates and same sand coming from the same production, in order to avoid any artifact. Sand was used to manufacture five sands representative of the categories defined in the EN 12260 norm for aggregates for concretes, by mixture with its fine fraction or its grained fraction extracted beforehand by washing. The employed sands contain approximately 0, 6, 12, 18 and 24 % of fillers. The concretes were formulated with the BetonlabPro2 software, whose algorithms take into account the presence of the fillers limestones. Concretes were realized at first without superplastifiant, then in the presence of a superplastifiant measured in 2/3 of saturation. The obtained results showed that a quantity of fillers limestones from 100 to 130 kg/m3 for the concretes and from 60 to 80 kg / m3 for superplasticizred concretes allows obtaining optimal properties, in equal consistency. But, higher quantities of fillers do not deteriorate significantly the properties of the concretes, even if their packing density decreases. One explains this behavior not only by the binding effect allotted to the fillers limestones, but also by an improvement of the paste-aggregates bond. Mixtures containing the strongest rates of fillers were again studied to formulate self compacting concretes SCC, which require a big quantity of fillers. Crushed sands bring then the major part of this constituent, what opens to them a new way of use
