Stoppe, Sebastian. "Film in concert: film scores and their relation to classical concert music." Verlag Werner Hülsbusch, 2014. https://ul.qucosa.de/id/qucosa%3A15663.

Abstract:
From the very beginning of cinema, music always played an important role in the history of filmmaking. Nonetheless, film music is judged by critics as a kind of low-grade art form. However, the majority of film score composers enjoyed a classical education and composed as well for the silver screen as for the concert hall. Film music also has its roots in the musical era of romanticism. Therefore, symphonic film scores can be regarded as program music in a broader sense. These scores were influenced by a motion picture instead of a poem, a landscape, or a painting. It is neither necessary nor supposed that film music must be subordinate to its belonging film. In fact, a well-written film score may enhance the impact of a film by using its own language—the language of music. Film music is still not truly recognized as an own style of music which is to be performed regularly in a concert hall. There are still strong prejudices about film music—too nice, too industrial, full of clichés, and unworthy to be performed live by an orchestra. This book wants to explore the nature of film music and its relation to classical music in this volume. How is film music perceived today? Does film music have its place on its own—uncoupled from its original film—in the concert hall? And how does film music relate to other musical genres in the 19th and 20th century? It is proper that I should begin by admitting that I am only an apprentice Reger-scholar. In planning this invited paper I evertheless learned much about how and why a British Mahler- and Schreker specialist, interested in the music of Hans fitzner and Franz Schmidt, might have remained so inconsistently ignorant of Reger. Setting aside, for the moment, the specific question of film music, what I have learned is clearly of levance to questions about why Reger appears not to ‘travel well’ internationally and about his reception by a UK audience.

Abstract:
This thesis wonders about the work of examiners within British and French filmclassifications: in the UK, the BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) is theinstitution in charge of film classification; in France, it is the Commission ofClassification of Cinematographic Works. The question here is: how have the work ofexaminers and institutional and societal evolutions shaped the creation and thedevelopment of a language criterion within British and French film classificationsystems? Indeed, stereotypically, those classifications are generally opposed: the BBFC is presented as a swearword-counting system, while the French classification is described as liberal. This thesis aims at explaining the origin of those stereotypes and at highlighting the true place of language within film classifications

Kosub, Tobias. "Ferromagnet-Free Magnetoelectric Thin Film Elements." Doctoral thesis, Universitätsbibliothek Chemnitz, 2016. http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:bsz:ch1-qucosa-215612.

Full text
Abstract:
The work presented in this thesis encompasses the design, development, realization and testing of novel magnetoelectric thin film elements that do not rely on ferromagnets, but are based entirely on magnetoelectric antiferromagnets such as Cr2O3. Thin film spintronic elements, and in particular magnetoelectric transducers, are crucial building blocks of high efficiency data processing schemes that could complement conventional electronic data processing in the future. Recent developments in magnetoelectrics have revealed, that exchange biased systems are ill-suited to electric field induced switching of magnetization due to the strong coupling of their ferromagnetic layer to magnetic fields. Therefore, ferromagnet-free magnetoelectric elements are proposed here in an effort to mitigate the practical problems associated with existing exchange biased magnetoelectric elements. This goal is achieved by establishing an all-electric read-out method for the antiferromagnetic order parameter of thin films, which allows to omit the ferromagnet from conventional exchange biased magnetoelectric elements. The resulting ferromagnet-free magnetoelectric elements show greatly reduced writing thresholds, enabled operation at room temperature and do not require a pulsed magnetic field, all of which is in contrast to state-of-the-art exchange biased magnetoelectric systems. The novel all-electric read-out method of the magnetic field-invariant magnetization of antiferromagnets, so-called spinning-current anomalous Hall magnetometry, can be widely employed in other areas of thin film magnetism. Its high precision and its sensitivity to previously invisible phenomena make it a promising tool for various aspects of thin solid films. Based on this technique, a deep understanding could be generated as to what physical mechanisms drive the antiferromagnetic ordering in thin films of magnetoelectric antiferromagnets. As spinning-current anomalous Hall magnetometry is an integral probe of the magnetic properties in thin films, it offers no intrinsic scale sensitivity. In order to harness its great precision for scale related information, a statistical framework was developed, which links macroscopic measurements with microscopic properties such as the antiferromagnetic domain size.

Abstract:
This paper explores the relation between the popular “Tintin” comics by the Belgian artist Hergé and Steven Spielberg’s successful film adaptation “The Adventures of Tintin” (2011) from a linguistic perspective. It explores how language use in the scriptovisual medium of the comic (which combines still images and printed text) is rendered in the audiovisual medium of film (which combines moving images and spoken language). After discussing general linguistic similarities between comics and films and the use of language in each of the two media, the paper compares the representation of voice, accent, thoughts, talking animals, sounds and written language in Spielberg’s screen adaptation to the original printed comic books. It analyses to what extent the language from comic books can be directly transferred to the filmic medium and investigates possible causes underlying any modifications in the above-mentioned domains.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to compare two different classification schemes with each other and see what the differences and similarities are when classifying literature concerning film and television. One of the schemes is of general kind, Klassifikationssystem för svenska bibliotek (SAB) and the other is a special system, FIAF Classification scheme for literature on film and television. The focus of the examination is on comparing the structure, contents and division of firstly the main classes and secondly on comparing the notation and the auxiliary tables in the schemes. The theoretical framework of the comparison is based upon theory of classification but the conclusions drawn are though mostly of a more subjective character. In addition to the comparison itself interviews have been made with four libraries, two with experiences of SAB and two with experiences of FIAF. The results of the study showed that the special system had a better breadth overall and that the possibilities for better specificity were much greater with that system, as expected. When comparing the overall structure of the schemes and how the classes were divided, the differences were negligible. The comparison of notation showed that the notation of the universal system was generally shorter and that the elements within it could be more easily distinguished. With the help of its auxiliary tables, the universal system turned out to make use of its resources in an even better way than expected. The interviews showed that both classification schemes were suitable in each organization.

Matthes, Patrick. "Magnetic and Magneto-Transport Properties of Hard Magnetic Thin Film Systems." Doctoral thesis, Universitätsverlag der Technischen Universität Chemnitz, 2015. https://monarch.qucosa.de/id/qucosa%3A20376.

Full text
Abstract:
The present thesis is about the investigation of ferromagnetic thin film systems with respect to exchange coupling, magnetization reversal behavior and effects appearing in magnetic heterostructures, namely the exchange bias and the giant magnetoresistance effect. For this purpose, DC magnetron sputtered thin films and multilayers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy were prepared on single crystalline and rigid as well as flexible amorphous substrates. The first part concentrates on magnetic data storage applications based on the combination of the concept of bit patterned media and three dimensional magnetic memory, consisting of at least two exchange decoupled ferromagnetic storage layers. Here, [Co/Pt] multilayers, revealing different magnetic anisotropies, have been applied as storage layers and as spacer material Pt and Ru was employed. By the characterization of the magnetization reversal behavior the exchange coupling in dependence of the spacer layer thickness was studied. Furthermore, with regard to the concept of bit patterned media, the layers were also grown on self-assembled silica particles, leading to an exchange decoupled single-domain magnetic dot array, which was studied by magnetic force microscope imaging and angular dependent magneto-optic Kerr effect magnetometry to evaluate the reversal mechanism and its dependence on the array dimensions, mainly the diameter of the silica particles and layer thicknesses. To complete the study, micromagnetic simulations were performed to access smaller dimensions and to investigate the dependence of intralayer as well as interlayer coupling on the magnetization reversal of the dot array with multiple storage layers. The second part focuses on the investigation of the giant magnetoresistance effect in systems with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, where L10 -chemically ordered FePt alloys and [Co/Pt] as well as [Co/Pd] multilayers were utilized. In case of FePt, where high temperatures during the deposition are necessary to induce the chemical ordering, diffusion and alloying of the spacer material often prevent a sufficient exchange decoupling of the ferromagnetic layers. However, with Ru as spacer material a giant magnetoresistance effect could be achieved. Large improvements of the magnetoresistive behavior of such trilayer structures are presented for [Co/Pt] and [Co/Pd] multilayers, which can be deposited at room temperature not limiting the choice of spacer as well as substrate material. Furthermore, in systems consisting of one ferromagnet with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and one ferromagnet with in-plane magnetic easy axis, a linear and almost hysteresis-free field dependence of the electrical resistance was observed and the behavior for various thickness series has been intensively studied. Finally, the corrosion resistance in dependence of the capping layer material as well as the magnetoresistance of a strained flexible pseudo-spin-valve structure is presented. In addition, in chapter 2.5.2 an experimental study of an improved crystal growth of FePt at comparable low temperatures by molecular beam epitaxy and further promoted by a surfactant mediated growth using Sb is shown. Auger electron spectroscopy as well as Rutherford backscattering spectrometry were carried out to confirm the surface segregation of Sb and magnetic characterization revealed an increase of magnetic anisotropy in comparison to reference layers without Sb.

Abstract:
Film music has its roots in late-romantic concert music. A number of composers of so-called “serious music” also composed for the film. And some Golden Age film composers came from the concert-music realm and, once they started their association with Hollywood, continued to pen works for the concert stage too. Film music had to struggle for a long time against the prejudice that saw it as music not to be taken seriously; it was regarded as “neglected art”. Nevertheless, film-music concerts have experienced a blossoming in the recent years. There is a large variety, from programmes that only perform film music in concert halls without any additional element to large-scale events in multi-purpose halls where film music is accompanied by film clips or provides the live accompaniment to entire films. This chapter examines the role of John Williams’s film scores in this context. Are there any special features of Williams’s film music that make it particularly suitable to the concert hall? How does the performance practice of his film music differ in comparison to classical concerts? Are there any pieces that are played more frequently than others, and if so, why?

Abstract:
Wenyi film has long been a research focus of Chinese film studies since the 1980s. An abundance of scholars has been writing on the topic of wenyi film, defining its generic nature as literature and art film or film adaptation of great literature, or understanding it in relation to themes of love and human relationships. Many scholars have explored the role of wenyi films in post-war Hong Kong and Taiwan cinemas. Yet, in terms of Republican Chinese cinema, only brief accounts on some wenyi directors or works can be found. This dissertation aims to answer the question of what is wenyi film? by studying materials from the 1910s to the 1940s. Wenyi film as a discursive notion was never static in that period of time and the notion intersects with different discourses and practices. By investigating the interaction between the notion and those discourses and practices, this dissertation aims to present a taxonomy of wenyi film as grouped under the themes of romance, family, national character, heroism and the people.

Abstract:
2D molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) gives a new inspiration for the field of nanoelectronics, photovoltaics, and sensorics. However, the most common processing technology, e.g., liquid‐phase based scalable exfoliation used for device fabrication, leads to the number of shortcomings that impede their large area production and integration. Major challenges are associated with the small size and low concentration of MoS₂ flakes, as well as insufficient control over their physical properties, e.g., internal heterogeneity of the metallic and semiconducting phases. Here it is demonstrated that large semiconducting MoS₂ sheets (with dimensions up to 50 µm) can be obtained by a facile cathodic exfoliation approach in nonaqueous electrolyte. The synthetic process avoids surface oxidation thus preserving the MoS₂ sheets with intact crystalline structure. It is further demonstrated at the proof‐of‐concept level, a solution‐processed large area (60 × 60 µm) flexible Ebola biosensor, based on a MoS₂ thin film (6 µm thickness) fabricated via restacking of the multiple flakes on the polyimide substrate. The experimental results reveal a low detection limit (in femtomolar–picomolar range) of the fabricated sensor devices. The presented exfoliation method opens up new opportunities for fabrication of large arrays of multifunctional biomedical devices based on novel 2D materials.

Abstract:

We report an influence of disorder on structural and magnetic properties of ZnFe2O4 thin films grown at temperatures ranging from 400°C to 600°C by pulsed laser deposition in O2 atmosphere on SrTiO3 (100) substrates evidenced by properties of electronic transitions observed in the dielectric function. Inversion of the normal spinel structure was found to be one of the main mechanisms responsible for the increase in the magnetic response for the lowest growth temperature. The enhanced feature in the dielectric function located at ~3.5 eV, related to the transition involving tetrahedrally coordinated Fe3+ cations, corresponds to the dominating magnetic coupling between the octahedral and tetrahedral lattice sites, responsible for the overall ferrimagnetic behaviour of the film grown at the lowest temperature.

The experience with film seminars for students has shown that these mostly do not dispose of enough foreknowledge for film analyses and they also lack the technical terms of the cinematic means. Since the length of films blows up each university time slot pattern, and therefore the seminars are conducted as block events, the students get an introduction from scratch in an orientation session as basic knowledge and tools for their own film analysis. We present X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy investigations of (InxGa1–x)2O3 thin films and bulk-like ceramics in dependence of their composition. The thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition have a continuous lateral composition spread allowing the determination of phonon mode properties and lattice parameters with high sensitivity to the composition from a single 2-in. wafer. In the regime of low indium concentration, the phonon energies depend linearly on the composition and show a good agreement between both sample types. We determined the slopes of these dependencies for eight different Raman modes. While the lattice parameters of the ceramics follow Vegard’s rule, deviations are observed for the thin films. Further, we found indications of the highpressure phase InGaO3 II in the thin films above a critical indium concentration, its value depending on the type of substrate.

Applying series approaches using Bessel and Sinus functions complete three dimensional solutions can be found for relatively complex laminate structures allowing to model quasistatic contact, impact and bending loads. Worked into a small computer program the approach can be used to model laminate structures with up to 100 different layers on an ordinary personal computer in an acceptable calculation time. The new tool is applied to analyse a variety of load problems typically occurring in windsurfing and leading to damage of the boards consisting of a laminated shell and an polymer foam core. [1] N. Abstract:
Fear is a recurrent theme in today’s popular culture. Film director Steven Spielberg’s lifelong work presents the full range from awe and fear to terror, heading towards a deeply humanist approach of overcoming fear. This article puts homiletics into the context of current sociocultural discourse by applying the concept of ‘paradigm scenario’ (Ronald de Sousa) to fear in media culture and preaching. Preaching, like film, works with emotions such as fear and anxiety, initiating strong physical and mental reaction. To preach within a fearful world demands that one be aware of the psychology of fear. As much as preachers are ready to face their personal fears, they abstain from frightening others. At best, preaching is the art of supporting people to live life liberated by the gospel, speaking up against those who create an atmosphere of fear. The gospel provides numerous paradigm scenarios of courage and vision.

Large area OLEDs show pronounced Joule self-heating at high brightness. This heating induces brightness inhomogeneities, drastically increasing beyond a certain current level. We discuss this behavior considering 'S'-shaped negative differential resistance upon self-heating, even allowing for 'switched-back' regions where the luminance finally decreases (Fischer et al., Adv. Funct. Mater. 2014, 24, 3367). By using a multi-physics simulation the device characteristics can be modeled, resulting in a comprehensive understanding of the problem. Here, we present results for an OLED lighting panel considered for commercial application. It turns out that the strong electrothermal feedback in OLEDs prevents high luminance combined with a high degree of homogeneity unless new optimization strategies are considered.

We determined the dielectric function of the alloy system (AlxGa1−x)2O3 by spectroscopic ellipsometry in the wide spectral range from 0.5 eV to 8.5 eV and for Al contents ranging from x = 0.11 to x = 0.55. For the composition range x<0.4, we observe single phase material in the b-modification and for larger Al content also the occurrence of γ-(Al,Ga)2O3. We derived spectra of the refractive index and the absorption coefficient as well as energy parameters of electronic bandband transitions by model analysis of the dielectric function. The dependence of the dielectric functions lineshape and the energy parameters on x is highly continuous, reflecting theoretical expectations. The data presented here provide a basis for a deeper understanding of the electronic properties of this material system and may be useful for device engineering.

Full text
Abstract:
While the MPAA’s Classification and Ratings Administration – or CARA – has generally expanded the freedoms of filmmakers since its 1968 inception, the economic failure of the NC-17 rating has led to substantial inconsistencies in the rating system. Because of the CARA model, filmmakers have been able to probe the extremes of violence under the R rating while they have been unable to do the same for screen sexuality. Through the NC-17 rating, CARA has been able to repress non-pornographic sexual portrayals by rating a given film NC-17, thus forcing contractually obligated directors to make edits that are sometimes inconsistent and arbitrary. Though cinema used to have significant thematic and visual freedoms over television, NC-17 level paid cable programming has surpassed what is allowed under CARA’s R-rating, allowing for more complex and mature viewpoints on sexuality than is currently allowed to regularly reach film audiences.

Full text
Abstract:
The present work addresses in-depth magnetic films with magnonic surface patterning of variable size. Two different kinds of such structures referred to as surface-modulated magnonic crystals were investigated: Ion-irradiated magnonic crystals and structurally etched magnonic crystals. To achieve that, two different experimental approaches were pursued. On the one hand, the magnetic moment at the surface of lithographically patterned permalloy (Ni80Fe20) films was periodically reduced by means of ion irradiation. On the other hand, structural trenches were introduced at the surface of a pre-patterned thin film by sequential ion milling. The goal is the acquisition of a fundamental understanding of the behavior of spin-wave modes in the transition from a continuous magnetic thin film to a full magnonic crystal, i.e. separated periodic magnetic structures. In the framework of this thesis, the spin-wave eigen-modes of such magnonic crystals were mainly investigated spectroscopically by means of ferromagnetic resonance. Thereby, the “Two-magnon scattering perturbation theory” and the “plane-wave method” were employed as the theoretical methodologies to understand the complex dynamics of such systems. The first is a reliable method to calculate the dynamic response of surface-modulated magnonic crystals where the modulation is of a perturbation character, i.e. small compared to the film thickness. The latter is a quasi-analytical approach to calculate the dynamic eigen-modes of magnonic crystals consisting of different components with significantly varying properties. Moreover, numerical methods were employed to get further insight into the spin dynamics of these structures. In such systems, the spin-wave behavior follows the well-known dispersion relation of flat magnetic thin films as long as the surface-modulation is small compared to the film thickness. In this work, it was shown that this circumstance can be exploited for a parameter-free determination of the exchange constant A, which is not experimentally accessible for magnetic thin films in a straightforward manner. However, once the modulation height is of significant magnitude, the dynamics of surface-modulated magnonic crystals become substantially more complex. A straightforward understanding of such kind of system is hampered by the complex interplay of different effects. On the one hand, the internal demagnetizing field reveals an alternating character and depends itself on the modulation height and the field angle. On the other hand, the dynamic eigen-modes are hybridized, i.e., they reveal different characteristics in different regions of the magnonic crystal and, in addition, they couple to each other. Here, the approach is particularly favorable to investigate the spin dynamics of surface-modulated magnonic crystals by systematically altering the modulation height of the same sample. This is mainly due to two reasons. First, the two edge cases, namely the thin film and the full magnonic crystal, are already well understood and, second, other magnetic and structural parameters remain constant. With the help of the measurement results and the simulations, the quasi-analytical theory was validated. Subsequently, the mode profiles were calculated by theory and simulation in order to analyze the mode character in the transition from a thin film to a full magnonic crystal. Two kinds of dynamic eigen-modes were identified, namely hybridized modes and localized modes. For both types, simple formulae were derived describing their characteristic dynamic behavior. Besides, transition rules were found connecting the mode number n of film modes with the mode number m of modes in the full magnonic crystal. In order to correlate the symmetry and magnitude of the demagnetizing field with the spin-wave eigen-modes, the internal fields of a strongly surface-modulated magnonic crystal were reconstructed by electron holography measurements. By reemploying the measurement results for micromagnetic simulations, the dynamics of the whole system could be reproduced. This strategy allowed for a better understanding of the link between the demagnetizing field and the spin-wave mode characteristics. Based on these results, a simplified model for the analytical description of the inplane angular dependence was found. The acquired understanding of such systems led to the elaboration of specific applications, such as the spin-wave channelization. It should be noted that the coupling of uniform to non-uniform spin-wave phenomena, which is an intrinsic property of these structures, holds out the prospect of several applications in the future.
