Abstract:
The film editor’s task in refining film edits by frame-by-frame matching is an important undertaking in perceptual precision. This article investigates whether the failure of a few frames jeopardizes the perceived continuity of a film. Thirty-three Swedish students were eye-tracked while watching two versions of the same documentary film sequence; one version was completed to continuity satisfaction by a film editor, while the other had some frames altered toward discontinuity. Gaze hits in Areas-of-Interest appointed by the film editor, saccade frequency, and pupil dilation after edit points were measured. No significant difference was found for hits in Areas-of-Interest, whereas saccade frequency and relative pupil size increased after edits in the altered version of the film sequence. Results indicate that the altered film sequence constrained viewers with possible cognitive effects, implying that frame-by-frame matching of film edits achieved by film editors is crucial to film continuity.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to understanding the image of the Soviet editor in Russian art (using examples of fiction and cinema). The author examines the personal qualities that contributed to the entry of a person into the profession («editorial character») and provides a chronological observation of the «editorial evolution» – in publishing and film production-throughout the Soviet period and the first years of Russia in the 1990s. An important aspect that has been updated since the early 1920s is the active inclusion of women in editorial work. The characteristics of editors of different Soviet periods are analyzed using examples from the prose of M. Bulgakov, V. Shishkov, L. Rakhmanov, A. Tobolyak, V. Astafyev. Portraits of Soviet film editors are considered in the works of J. Gausner, N. Bogoslovsky, V. Makanin, D. Rubina and M. Kuraev. Representatives of the editorial profession are also represented in the films of A. Tarkovsky, V. Zheregy, K. Shakhnazarov and A. Benckendorf. There are two main types in the artistic depiction of editors and their activities: satirical (in a pointed form ridiculing personal and professional shortcomings) and dramatic (reflecting the complexity of editorial characters in their inseparability with the influence of society, historical era). In the final part of the article, the vectors of professional diffusions in the film-editing corps are outlined with the end of the Soviet era and the need to adapt to the new, post-Soviet realities.

Abstract:
The article analyzes the experiences of Italian women editors as examples of the complex interplay between modes of resistance and acceptance developed by women professionals in a male-dominant film industry. Retracing the evolution of the profession of editor from the silent era to the 1970s, the article navigates the genealogies of Italian women who worked in the cutting room. These women used their creative and professional skills to overcome obstacles imposed by a film industry that otherwise reproduced entrenched patterns of gender and class discrimination. In particular the case of Ornella Micheli, a professional editor who worked on more than sixty films between the 1950s and the 1970s, reveals a practitioner who fitted into the mechanisms of her working environment, but also developed her own personal strategies to affirm her professional status and ensure the continuity of her career.

Abstract:
In this article the author intends to recall the figure of Zofia Dwornik, one of the most appreciated and nowadays rather forgotten female film editors of post-war communist Poland. For the twenty-five years of her creative activity, Dwornik cooperated in the production of more than thirty films with the most important directors of the Polish cinema in the 1950s, 60s and 70s. In the Polish post-war cinema, the profession of film editor was strongly feminised. In the case of Dwornik, her decision to choose this particular profession was, however, based on additional objective considerations, closely related to the context of the Stalinist period in Poland, and was not her first choice of career – she had wanted to become a film director. In this article the author takes a closer look not so much at the achievements of Dwornik in the 1960s and 70s, but at the complex circumstances that influenced her later career. Therefore, the author tries to reconstruct the most important moments in Dwornik’s student and professional life in the first years after WWII and analyse one of the film études she made at the Film School in Łódź, in order to examine the reasons for her decision to become a film editor. This allows also to formulate some hypotheses how her career might have developed, had she been given the chance to graduate and try her hand at directing.

Abstract:
The mid-1970s proved a particularly fertile moment in the encounter between cinema and television in West Germany. Focusing on different editorial units at Cologne-based Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR), this dossier traces the sense of experimentation at the public service broadcaster. Commissioning editors like Werner Dütsch at the film unit, Angelika Wittlich and the series Telekritik, but also those at the department ‘Language and Literature’ made it possible for critics and film-makers like Harun Farocki to explore essayistic formats and programmes. The dossier combines a retrospective essay by WDR commissioning editor Dütsch, several archival documents from 1974 to 1976, and starts with a contextualising essay by Pantenburg.

Abstract:
We investigated physical changes over three versions in the production of the short historical drama, Woman with an Editing Bench (2016, The Physical TV Company). Pearlman, the film’s director and editor, had also written about the work that editors do to create rhythms in film (Pearlman 2016), and, through the use of computational techniques employed previously (Cutting et al. 2018), we found that those descriptions of the editing process had parallels in the physical changes of the film as it progressed from its first assembled form, through a fine cut, to the released film. Basically, the rhythms of the released film are not unlike the rhythms of heartbeats, breathing, and footfalls—they share the property of “fractality.” That is, as Pearlman shaped a story and its emotional dynamics over successive revisions, she also (without consciously intending to do so) fashioned several dimensions of the film— shot duration, motion, luminance, chroma, and clutter—so as to make them more fractal.

Abstract:
Reporters in films of the early 1930s were often portrayed as drunks or as less than glamorous, as evidenced by the 1930 film “The Front Page.” By the end of the decade, pressure from the American Newspaper Publishers Association, American Society of Newspaper Editors, and other professional organizations, plus film-makers' need for good press, caused a change in the way reporters appeared, as evidenced by “His Girl Friday,” the 1940 remake of “The Front Page.” World War II films often portrayed reporters as searchers for truth in a free democratic system, a striking contrast to fascist control of information abroad. This study is based on the recently opened files of the Production Code Administration plus the viewing of 35 key films of the period.

Abstract:
This short essay provides an introduction to the short-lived but influential magazine Women & Film, published in California between 1972 and 1975. Two graduate students, Siew-Hwa Beh (b. 1945) and Saundra Salyer (b. 1946), from the University of California, Los Angeles, and San Francisco State, respectively, were the founders of this pioneering publication devoted entirely to providing a feminist perspective on film. They set up the magazine in response to a collision between their radical leftist and feminist politics and their cinephilia. This essay contextualizes some examples, which are reproduced here, of the first issue's contents. It also sheds light on the eclectic and impassioned approach adopted by the magazine's editors and contributors, bolstered by accompanying excerpts and images.

de, Selincourt Chris. "Where is the mind of the media editor? : an analysis of editors as intermediaries between technology and the cinematic experience." Thesis, Cardiff Metropolitan University, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10369/8682.

Full text
Abstract:
What space does the mind occupy? A standard response to this question might be to locate the mind within the brain. However some argue that our mental processes also extend beyond the boundaries of the brain. Gallagher & Zahavi (2008) have termed these two views of the mind: internalism and externalism. In cinema, the role of editor as mediator between the cognitive activities of filmmakers, audiences and the editing equipment, makes their practice particularly suited for investigating these two seemingly incompatible views. When editors cut or join chunks of sound and image, they assemble externally what some would recognise internally as the mind’s fluctuations between one object of attention and the next. Their activities reveal a side of cinema, but also of the mind, which is usually hidden from view. The purpose of this thesis will therefore be to show how studying the process of editing contributes to our understanding of the relationship between mind and world. In order to address the question of where the editor’s mental processes are located, this study applies a phenomenographic methodology. Rather than attempt to understand cognition from a preconceived or objectively constituted position, phenomenography starts by examining variation in how a group of individuals view a particular process. This leads toward research findings that are presented from a ‘second-order perspective’ (Marton, 1981). In this thesis an understanding of how audiovisual material is selected and sequenced is revealed through fourteen interviews with British editors and directors. From the analysis of these interviews a framework emerged of five critical interrelated ways to approach the editing process. This evidence suggests that the cognitive process occurs in virtue of an editor’s physical activities, the editing equipment, plus a broader network of social and cultural relations that support the filmmaking environment. Refuting the belief that the mind is separate from the world, the editor’s mental processes are to be found distributed amongst a variety of internal and external features of their environment. The outcome of this thesis is a phenomenographic perspective on the editing process. This, I conclude, will help to inform cognitive scientists of the kinds of mental processes that editors are aware of. It also provides a wider audience of scholars with a framework for further research on variation in the process and practice of editing.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to locate current problems concerning the process of finding common ground between a creative producer and its respective client, furthermore it aims to propose a solution to this problem in the context of collaborative video editing. The paper starts off by exploring research related to the topic. After that, it establishes, through interviews with experts within fields of video editing and graphic design, what the currently existing problems are concerning communication within their line of work. As a solution to these problems, a collaborative software is proposed with the idea of bridging the understanding between the video editor and its client. The paper ends with some conclusions surrounding the current state of the topic and proposes a way forward for both practitioners and researchers.

Thesis, Paris 3, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014PA030158.

Abstract:
In 1967, under the influence of European art films, Hollywood underwent important changes in the course of the 1960s : « Old Hollywood » was taken over by a « New Hollywood ». This process of renewal of American cinema, which has been symbolically launched by Arthur Penn’s Bonnie and Clyde and Mike Nichols’ The Graduate, is due, it has been said, to the arrival of a new – mostly film-school educated – generation of filmmakers, such as Francis Ford Coppola, Brian De Palma,George Lucas, William Friedkin, Michael Cimino, Martin Scorsese, Robert Altman, Bob Rafelson or Hal Ashby. It is also due to the arrival of a new generation of film editors who did not fear to challenge the doctrine of classical Hollywood editing and break the established rules in order to take a chance and try new ways of telling a story. These films editors are, amongst others, Dede Allen, Walter Murch, Sam O’Steen, Verna Fields, Alan Heim, Paul Hirsch, Robert C. Jones, Richard Marks, or Ralph Rosenblum. Our thesis examines the share of responsability, on both a collective and individual level, of this new generation of film editors in this process of renewal of American cinema in the 1960s and 1970’s. Its goal is, more generally, to determine and appreciate this new editing style, realize its importance and its influence on the Hollywood Renaissance style, as well as the wide range of its innovations

Abstract:
The thesis is about Gian Giacomo Trivulzio (Milan, 1774-1831), bibliophile, editor and intellectual. The first part is a Trivulzio’s systematic biography, the second one focuses on his main cultural interests, particularly: his love for Parini, his original poetic production (with a short history of the “Accademia degli Inesperti”), his collectible and editorial activity linked to the Italian novelists, his critical and textual studies on Boccaccio’s works. Finally, the project concerning an anthology of the Italian poetry from its beginning to Poliziano and the proposals for a recovery of Dante’s Convivio, Vita nuova and Rime textify the most mature developments of what can rightly be defined Trivulziana philology.

Abstract:
The main goal of this article is to map and review real time video streaming collaborative softwares, in order to analyze platforms that are also able to edit films. Real time high resolution film transmission (4k, 8k or above) results in the excess of data generated and, consequently, in a high value for investment in editing, storage and content distribution features. The retrieval and storage of the data (content) becomes complex and expensive. This article aims to design a software review for the use of systems that are applicable to the needs directly related to the digital education field, considering that nowadays the video is an important tool to support teaching and learning processes and needs a better structuring from the educational managers of communication and information technologies.

Abstract:
The paper presents two software tools (graphical editor and software package). The editor is designed for the formation of a symbolic description of a mechanical system using the Lagrange formalism. A system of the absolutely rigid bodies connected by joints is considered as a mechanical system. The editor is a user interface by which one sets the structure of the interconnection of bodies (system configuration) as well as the geometric and kinematic characteristics for each body of the system. The created structure and the entered data are automatically presented in the form of a text file, which is used as an input file for the software package for modeling mechanical systems in a symbolic form with a computer. The use of these software tools is shown in detail in the example of the analysis of the dynamics of a satellite with a gravitational stabilizer in a circular orbit. For this system, the kinetic energy and force function of an approximate Newtonian gravitational field were obtained, nonlinear and linearized equations of motion were constructed, and the question of the stability of the relative equilibrium position was considered.

Abstract:
Abstract STEP data exchanged for collaborative engineering is usually used in CAD systems. However, it is not used so well in PDM systems due to differences in data scope and structure. In order to resolve this inefficiency, we developed the STEP file converter which can manipulate STEP data in web-based PDM systems. The translation scope is limited to AP203. The translator consists of two modules: 1) the viewer which displays STEP data in web environments and 2) mapping editor and translator between STEP schema and PDM database schema.

Abstract:
There has been a significant loss of spatial thinking support in the move from paper to computer-based work. Map-based software methods reported here fill this gap while resolving general challenges in deploying software tools into active industrial practice. The Decision Rationale editor (DRed) has been in use over nine years and 700 engineers have been trained within the partner company. Semi-structured interviews were performed with 13 engineers from diverse departments and with a range of experience levels. Collected examples were analysed for successful methods (what), common contexts of use (where) and advantages over existing tools (why). Map use seems to focus on problems where multiple poorly defined options need sorting in order to progress work. The diversity of use cases demonstrates a need for increased investment in flexible visual tools to aid human thinking. Future work will expand on the set of collected examples, including attempts to generalize lessons to other software. More detailed experiments are also needed to better understand specific cognitive benefits in the work environment.

Abstract:
High tensile strength cables, low-resistance motor windings, and shape memory actuators are common examples of technical fibers used in robots and other electromechanical assemblies. Because properties like tensile strength, crystal structure, and polymer alignment depend strongly on processing history, these materials cannot be 3D printed with the same properties they have on the spool. Strings and fibers are inserted in mechanical parts at the end of the manufacturing process for these assemblies. When the fibers take complex paths, the installation is often done by hand. This activity can dominate the process time, increase its human labor and reduce its social sustainability [1]. This paper applies the non-traditional approach of machine embroidery to insert sheets of patterned fibers in layered additive manufacturing processes such as 3D printing and lamination. Fibers are aligned with features in laser-cut or printed parts without the manual labor of hand threading. We demonstrate that water-soluble stabilizer materials originally designed for textiles can hold hard mechanical parts in a machine embroidery hoop with enough strength and rigidity to withstand sewing through pre-existing holes in the part. Alignment to within 250 microns has been demonstrated with a sub-$300 consumer embroidery machine. Case studies in this paper include a cable-driven mechanism, a soft-to-hard electronic connection, and an electromechanical sensor. Process-compatible and commercially available materials that can be embroidered include conductive threads, shrinking threads, water-soluble threads and high tensile strength fibers. The biggest hurdle for a user interested in this automated fiber installation process is linking the existing design file with an embroidery machine file. There is a much larger user base for 2D and 3D computer-assisted design (CAD) software than for expensive and proprietary embroidery digitizing software. We take the route chosen by the laser cutter industry, where the user produces a CAD file in their preferred editor, and makes annotations that communicate where and how densely to stitch. Translation software scans the file for a particular line style and generates stitch coordinates along it. Development is done in Jupyter/iPython notebooks that allow end-users to inspect, understand, and modify the conversion code. The intent is for users of existing planar fabrication technology (whether laser, printed circuit board, or micro/nano) to apply this method to their own CAD files for a versatile and straightforward way to put advanced materials in their devices without adding manual labor. This general approach can solve a class of assembly problems relevant to underactuated tendon-driven robotics and other electromechanical systems, expanding the range of devices that can be put together using automation.

Abstract:
There are many approaches to simulating and visualizing a dynamic system. Our focus is on developing/understanding and trading-off three different approaches that are relatively easy to implement with inexpensive, commonly available software using combinations of MATLAB, Simulink, Simulink 3D Animation, SolidWorks (basic), SolidWorks (Motion Manager) in addition to several common animation players such as Windows (Live) Movie Maker or the resident animation capability within MATLAB. The “SolidWorks Design Table” approach entails creating MATLAB/Simulink driven time-dependent assembly configurations, associated graphics files (e.g. JPG, TIFF) and then effectively “playing” them sequentially with animation software. The “SolidWorks Motor” approach utilizes SolidWorks’ Motion Manager capability (an add-on), whereby each spatially time-dependent geometric system variable is driven by a “motor” based on MATLAB/Simulink time-dependent data and an animation file can be generated from within Motion Manager. Lastly, in the “Simulink 3D Animation” approach, SolidWorks data is brought into the MATLAB environment and modified with V-Realm Builder (VRML Editor) supplied within the Simulink 3D Animation toolbox to define geometric constraints prior to inclusion as an animation VR Sink block within the Simulink model of the dynamic system. In each case, detailed procedures are provided. To exercise these three different approaches and permit comparisons, a benchmark problem was posed: parallel-parking of a four-wheeled vehicle possessing front wheel steering. Comparisons were then made and the recommended approach depends on such issues as the software background of the developer, the animation quality standard (e.g. framerate), and relative ease of implementation.
