Abstract:
One of the features of films compared to other cultural products is the possibility of their use for advertising and information activities and influence on the formation of needs and audience preferences, as well as different patterns of consumer behavior. The urgency of this scientific problem is that the sale of cinema products today is impossible without a marketing system. The applications of different marketing strategies depending on the specific tasks allows a differentiated approach to each project and achieve the goals both from the standpoint of contribution to the development of culture, and in terms of obtaining economic effects from the film industry. The main purpose of the study is to substantiate and determine the features of the use of marketing tools in the film industry. The study of marketing services for film production was carried out in accordance with the logical structure of the concept of "7P" (product, promotion, location, price, staff, physical environment and the process of providing services). Recommendations for the marketing of services in the film industry: first, the choice of methods for watching movies depends on the type of media environment (traditional, digital), secondly, the choice of ways to obtain movies depending on their genre and subject, thirdly, in order to effective promotion of content and perception of the film identified the basic requirements for its trailer. The article proves that the marketing of services in the film industry is aimed not only at meeting the socio-cultural needs of the population, but also at the commercialization of the industry, ensuring audience access to films, as well as creating market conditions for its sustainable development. The research materials are the basis for further research on current issues of modern film practice, integration of film production and film consumption.

Abstract:
The formation of scientifically grounded approaches to improve the management of the film industry needs to analyze the contemporary state of film industry in order to identify its most important problems and untapped opportunities for further dynamic and effective development. The analysis of the status and trends of Russian cinema-business development, the peculiarities of its historical development and study of logic interdependent processes are relevant prerequisites for solving the problem of forming of risk management system of project im- plementation; because in many cases these risks are caused by the specificity of Russian cinema and features of its functioning. The article is devoted to the analysis of the contemporary state of the domestic film industry based on which it is possible to make the conclusion about the need to improve management. The author analyzes the main economic indicators of the industry and describes the main development trends and their positive and negative features. The author studies thoroughly such indicators as dynamics of film distribution in the Russian film market, divided into the percentage of domestic and foreign films, attendance of cinemas in Russia, the number of cinemas and particular cinema hall in the country, takings of the Russian and foreign film projects, the production facilities of film studios, etc. A detailed analysis of the statistical data for the last 10 years allows the author to make the main conclusion about the origin of real prerequisites for the formation and development of scientifically based management systems in general and risk management system in particular in the production of Russian film projects.

Abstract:
Involved in filmmaking more than four decades, Elia Kazan had been a witness and an influence for significant change in the American film industry. His final phase includes four films, respectively, America America, The Arrangement, The Visitors and The Last Tycoon which are his most neglected films in film studies, compared to his previous successful films such as On the Waterfront, A Streetcar Named Desire, East of Eden and Splendor in the Grass. This study has focused on one of his late films for mainly two reasons; to fill the gap in the literature and present an analyses of Kazan’s most structurally different film regarding its narrative complexities with the concept of realism. Realism is one of the key concepts to study Kazan in the research field, but distinctively, I have tried to find the realism within the mise-en-scène and ambivalence in the narrative.

Abstract:
This article represents the first attempt in Ukraine of complex interdisciplinary investigation of the history of Australian film development in the XX-th century in the context of Australian culture. Analysing films in historical order the peculiarities of each decade are taken into consideration. The periods of silent films, sound films and colour films are analysed. The best film productions, their film directors and prominent actors are outlined. Special attention is paid to the development of feature films and documentaries.
The article concentrates on the development of different film genres beginning with national historical drama, films of the first pioneers’ survival, adventure films. It is shown how they contribute to the embodiment in films of the main archetypes of Australian culture, the development of Australian identity. After World War I and World War II war films appear to commemorate the courage of the Australian soldiers in the war fields. Later on the destiny of the Australian women white settlers’ wives or native Australians inspired film directors to make them the chief heroines of their movies.
A comparative analysis of films and literary primary sources underlying their scripts is carried out. It is concluded that the Australian directors selected the best examples of Australian national poetry and prose, which reveal the historical and social, cultural and racial problems of the country's development during the twentieth century.
The publication dwells on boom and bust periods of Australian film making. The governmental policy in this sphere is analysed. Different schemes of film production and distribution are outlined to make national film industry compatible with the other film industries of the world, especially with the Hollywood. The area of a new discipline - Australian Film Studios - is studied as well as the works of Australian scholars. It is clarified in what Australian universities this discipline is taught. It is assumed that the experience of Australia in this sphere should be taken by Ukraine.

Abstract:
The term “gel”, in the jargon of the plastics film industry, may refer to any inclusion that produces a visible artifact in a polymeric film. Although they can occur in any plastic product, gels are a principle concern in films where they detract from the cosmetic appearance of the product and may compromise its mechanical strength by acting as local stress concentrators. Many film gels are small spheres or ellipsoids less than one millimeter in diameter whereas other gels are fusiform-shaped and may reach several centimeters in length. The actual composition of gel inclusions may vary from miscellaneous inorganics (i.e. glass and mineral particles) and processing additives to heavily oxidized, charred or crosslinked polymer. The most commonly observed gels contain polymer differing from the bulk of the sample in its melt viscosity, density or molecular weight.Polymeric gels are a special concern in polyethylene films. Over the years and with the examination of a variety of these samples three predominant polymeric species have been observed: density gels which have different crystallinity than the film; melt-index gels in which the molecular weight is different than the film and crosslinked gels which are comprised of crosslinked polyethylene.

Abstract:
Ao fim e ao cabo essa estratégia tende a reduzir barreiras de entrada nos grandes mercados internacionais, o que facilita a exportação e aumenta a atratividade do produto para investidores.<br>Growing twelve per cent on average each year, from 2010 to 2015, the film industry in Brazil remains dominated by imported products. Acknowledging that the government support received by this industry was not enough to ensure national products hegemony, the necessity for company s orientation toward the maketplace is perceived. The objective of this study is to identify which product s features optimize the product s utility for it s target market. For such purpose, this study identified which product s attributes were more relevant and their respective levels according to the industry and evaluated them using market directives to develop new products. This is study is an application of conjoint analysis, in which the utility of different products for the sample can be calculated and insights produced to help national producers. Focus-groups with executives and customers were conducted to identify the attributes and their levels and assure mutual understanding. Such data was used in the fractional factorial design, essential for survey s feasibility. Outcome analysis indicated the ideal product for the sample and for each of the twelve market segment defined a priori. They also shown that the utility of Brazilian cast and Portuguese as a spoken language is lower to the sample than the utility of multi-national cast using more than one language. In addition, the paradigm that Brazilian films were in a disadvantage because of it s lack or few usage of special effects was broken. International co-productions, which are strategic alliances rarely used by Brazilian producers, constitutes an alternative that may amplify the utility of Brazilian films. They enable multi-market fundraising and, by consequence, multi-national cast and bigger investments in technical and artistic aspects. In summary, this strategy tend to reduce entry barriers in bigger markets, which facilitates export and attract more investments.

Abstract:
xvii, 397 p. : ill., maps.<br>Thousands of films are produced every year in the United States, and only a fraction of these is made by mainstream Hollywood film studios. Independent filmmakers working in regional locations produce the majority of these films, retaining financial, creative and distribution control and working with locally-based cast and crew members. This film activity must be acknowledged in order to fully understand the American film industry. This study examines regional independent filmmaking through case studies of two film communities: Portland, Oregon and Seattle, Washington. Using political economy of communication as the primary theoretical foundation, this study focuses on the infrastructure (systems, policies, resources and practices) that supports and/or limits the production and distribution of independent films. The research utilizes extensive document analysis of historical materials and contemporary documents produced by organizations and individuals, as well as a survey of 60 film professionals and interviews with over 40 film professionals. A central challenge to independent filmmaking is the term "independent," which has been contested by film professionals and scholars; therefore, this study analyzes and offers a new definition of "independent filmmaking." The history of filmmaking activity in Portland and Seattle is presented, as well as an extensive discussion of the contemporary landscape of regional independent filmmaking in these two communities. The study finds that there are a multitude of contradictions pertaining to financing, distribution, labor and myths of independent filmmaking. These contradictions present a range of opportunities and challenges that often simultaneously conflict with each other. The filmmaking communities in Portland and Seattle have notable networks of support, including professional and educational organizations, film festivals, government initiatives and a few locally-operated distributors. However, filmmakers in both cities also share challenges in financing, distribution and labor. The study argues that regional independent filmmaking has made a dynamic and influential contribution to the American film industry and cultural production but has been under-explored in academic scholarship. The research also points to the need to examine and understand the contradictions of independent filmmaking to improve the circumstances and infrastructure that support regional independent filmmaking.<br>Committee in charge: Dr. Janet Wasko, Chairperson; Dr. Gabriela Martinez, Member; Dr. H. Abstract:
The commercialization and global transformation of the Chinese film industry demonstrates that this industry has been experiencing drastic changes within the new social and economic environment of China in which film has become a commodity generating high revenues. However, the Chinese government still exerts control over the industry which is perceived as an ideological tool. They believe that the films display and contain beliefs and values of certain social groups as well as external constraints of politics, economy, culture, and ideology. And, ironically, the films censored in China often gain great fame outside of China becoming worldwide blockbusters. This study will look at how those films are banned by the Chinese film censorship system through analyzing their essential cinematic elements, including narrative, filming, editing, sound, color, and sponsor and publisher. The study will also analyze how the combination of government control and market forces influence the Chinese film industry and its production.

Abstract:
The collapse of the video window is disrupting the economic framework between exhibitors and distributors in the film industry. This study analyzes the collapse from several angles and provides a detailed description as to why the collapse has, and will continue to be, disruptive. I first examine the impact various technologies have had on the collapse of the video window – the time between a motion picture’s theatrical release and video release – during 1997 – 2012. The average video window has declined from 5 months 22days in 1997 to 3 months 29 days in 2012. Differences of means tests were used to inspect the average video window at the time of each technology’s introduction. Then in order to reveal how the length of the video window affects box office profit, I use an ordinary least squares regression to examine the determinants of gross domestic box office profit for a sample of 294 top earning U.S. films during 1999-2012.

Teti, Emanuele. "The risk and return trade-off in the film industry : a comparative empirical analysis." Thesis, London Metropolitan University, 2008. http://repository.londonmet.ac.uk/1206/.

Full text
Abstract:
Despite its proved riskiness, the film industry is one of the most economically relevant industries in the world, constantly undergoing rapid change and development, since every day millions of dollars, pounds, euros or other currencies are invested in film productions. Although restricted to the theatrical release sector of the market, this thesis aims to explain why this industry attracts so many investors, and in doing this to add to the body of knowledge and understanding of the manner in which the industry works. At its core is the analysis of the trade-off between risk and return that characterises the industry. The work, hence, is based not on models and predictions of the expected returns, profits or losses of film investments, but rather on the assessment of indicators that can depict the scale or degree of dispersion of these expected values - that is, the risk that the companies are willing to entertain. The work makes an in-depth comparative analysis of the investment risk and return trade-off by empirically investigating the different behaviour of the film industry in the United States and in Europe, drawing in detail upon the Italian film industry to represent the European context. In this perspective, the work also aims to analyse why state support is justified in Europe and not in the US, and the financial effectiveness of Italian state support to film industry, by identifying to what extent it contributes to improving cultural identity. The investigation extends significantly current knowledge, showing that the financial effectiveness of the US film industry is incomparably superior to that of the Italian film industry, and that public policy in Italy towards the current system of film subsidisation is inequitable and inefficient. The work also introduces a new dataset into the literature, the Italian dataset constructed by the author.

Abstract:
The Sundance Film Festival has transformed from being a fringe festival to a leading showcase for independent cinema. This research shows that studios now descend upon the festival to acquire films for commercial distribution. The Sundance Film Festival seems to currently operate as a marketplace for films rather than an independent festival. This research seeks to examine how Hollywood studios have been able to infiltrate and commodify independent projects from the Sundance Film Festival and what the potential ramifications are for emerging independent filmmakers seeking to have their projects screened at the festival. In other words, have Hollywood studios coopted the Sundance Film Festival and if so, what does this process look like? This research seeks to answer these questions through an analysis of Sundance Film Festival data and interviews with festival informants.

Walkley, Sarah Elizabeth. "To what extent can France continue to defend the cultural exception in the digital age? : an analysis of cultural diversity in the French film industry." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2016. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/80230/.

Full text
Abstract:
Since the first General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade in 1947, France has insisted that cultural products are different from other traded goods and should be exempted from ongoing liberalisation of international trade – a principle known as the ‘cultural exception’. This exclusion allows France to implement policies in favour of its cultural industries, particularly a highly complex system of quotas and subsidies for the film industry which it maintains is essential to counter US market dominance and maintain cultural diversity. Over the past decade, the launch of video-on-demand services has revolutionised how films are delivered and consumed. Policy-makers have attempted to keep pace with these developments, expanding the scope of French support schemes accordingly. Adopting a mixed methods approach, this thesis analyses cultural diversity in the French film industry in detail, incorporating for the first time both the cinema and video-on-demand sectors and combining qualitative and quantitative data to understand the impact of French policies on diversity. Quantitative analysis reveals strong evidence of diversity in both sectors but that, while digital channels offer greater variety of choice, cinema is more balanced between films of different geographic origins. Employing a consistent approach to policy development in both channels, policy-makers have failed to take into account these and other differences, or to target measures at the emerging threats to diversity in the digital environment – potentially undermining the French defence of the cultural exception on diversity grounds. There is a surprisingly superficial use of the term cultural diversity in trade circles, leading to the conclusion that a more sophisticated approach is needed. Refining French policy in line with empirical data and actively using that evidence to demonstrate policy success will be a necessary part of this more sophisticated approach if France is to successfully defend the cultural exception in future trade negotiations.

Abstract:
AbstractElectrochemical deposited (ECD) thick film copper on silicon substrate is one of the most challenging technological brick for semiconductor industry representing a relevant improvement from the state of art because of its excellent electrical and thermal conductivity compared with traditional compound such as aluminum. The main technological factor that makes challenging the industrial implementation of thick copper layer is the severe wafer warpage induced by Cu annealing process, which negatively impacts the wafer manufacturability. The aim of presented work is the understanding of warpage variation during annealing process of ECD thick (~20 µm) copper layer. Warpage has been experimental characterized at different temperature by means of Phase-Shift Moiré principle, according to different annealing profiles. A linear Finite Element Model (FEM) has been developed to predict the geometrically stress-curvature relation, comparing results with analytical models.

Full text
Abstract:
This project explores workforce and occupations within the highway, street, and bridge construction industries (NAICS 237310) in Indiana. There are five specific deliverable comprised of three data reports, one policy document, and a website. The first data report includes an assessment of the workforce based on the eight-part framework, which are industry, occupations, job postings, hard-to-fill jobs, Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP), GAP Analysis, compatibility, and automation. The report defines a cluster followed by a detailed analysis of the occupations, skills, job postings, etc., in the NAICS 237310 industry in Indiana. The report makes use of specialized labor market databases, such as the Economic Modeling Specialists International (EMSI), CHMURA JobsEQ, etc. The analysis is based only on the jobs covered under the unemployment insurance or the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW) data. The second data report analyzes jobs to jobs flows to and from the construction industry in Indiana, with a particular emphasis on the Great Recession, by utilizing the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data. The third data report looks into the equal employment opportunity or Section 1391 and 1392 data for Indiana and analyzes specific characteristics of that data. The policy report includes a set of recommendations for workforce development for INDOT and a summary of the three data reports. The key data on occupations within the NAICS 237310 are provided in an interactive website. The website provides a data dashboard for individual INDOT Districts. The policy document recommends steps for development of the highways, streets and bridges construction workforce in INDOT Districts.

Abstract:
[Extract from Executive Summary] The European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF) has funded the ‘Scottish Inshore Fisheries Integrated Data System’ (SIFIDS) project, which aims to integrate data collection and analysis for the Scottish inshore fishing industry. SIFIDS Work Package 4 was tasked with assessing the socio-economic and cultural characteristics of Scottish Inshore Fisheries. The aim was to develop replicable frameworks for collecting and analysing cultural data in combination with defining and analysing already available socio-economic datasets. An overview of the current available socio-economic data is presented and used to identify the data gaps. Primary socio-economic and cultural research was conducted to fill these gaps in order to capture complex cultural, social and economic relationships in a usable and useful manner. Some of the results from this Work Package will be incorporated into the platform that SIFIDS Work Package 6 is building. All primary research conducted within this work package followed the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) Research Ethics Framework and was granted Ethical Approval by the UHI Research Ethics Committee under code ETH895.
