Films formed by dip coating brass wires with dilute and semi-dilute solutions of polyvinyl butyral in benzyl alcohol were studied in their liquid and solid states. While dilute and semi-dilute solutions behaved as Maxwell viscoelastic fluids, the thickness of the liquid films followed the Landau-Levich-Derjaguin prediction for Newtonian fluids. At a very slow rate of coating, the film thickness was difficult to evaluate. Therefore, the dynamic contact angle was studied in detail. We discovered that polymer additives preserve the advancing contact angle at its static value while the receding co

In this work, the fulfillment of Vegard's law in thin polycrystalline films Sm1-xGdxS and Sm1-xEuxS, obtained by the method of explosive evaporation of the powder in vacuum, is investigated. It is shown that compliance with the Vegard law in the manufacture of thin-film structures based on Sm1-xEuxS solid solutions is possible only with the same technological parameters of film deposition, in particular, the substrate temperature. In the case of the Sm1-xGdxS solid solutions, the law is observed only in the metal phase of the solid solutions, with x> 0.12.

The BaTiO3 and the (Ba, Sr)TiO3 solid-solution films included “crater-shape” defects that resulted from the breakaway of the growing film, whereas no such defects were observed in the SrTiO3 film. Abstract A simple laboratory method has been developed to assess the effects of scratch and abrasion damage on the corrosion resistance of corrosion resistant alloys (CRAs) under deaerated, sweet and also sour corrosion conditions. The technique was developed in order to simulate the potential damage to tubing caused by well interventions such as wireline operations or calliper runs in oil/gas production wells. The approach could also be used to investigate the possible effects of erosion on corrosion. The test procedure was later developed to enable a cathodic current to be applied to the wor

Inhomogeneity and a lack of reproducibility in optical thin film coatings has been attributed in part to chemical decomposition and phase transitions which may occur during exposure to the high temperatures frequently present during deposition. A stable material which does not exhibit phase transitions or decomposition could significantly improve the reproducibility of thin film fabrication. Potentially large groups of materials which fit these requirements exist as ceramics and as solid solutions formed from combinations of many common refractory oxide materials. The combination of ZrO2, HfO2

We have studied the friction-modifying properties of associated amphiphile structures formed at solid–liquid interfaces from bulk solutions. The mechanisms of friction at the molecular level are only partially understood, but are expected to be strongly affected by the phase state of the confined thin film, i.e., by molecular structure and ordering, and also by interactions between confined molecules and the solid surfaces. In contrast to pre-applied lubricant films, self-assembling systems present the advantage of being self-healing, so that upon local fluctuations in pressure and wear, the f

When a liquid wets a solid wall, the extended meniscus may be divided into three regions: a non-evaporating region where liquid is adsorbed on the wall; a thin-film region where effects of long-range molecular forces (disjoining pressure) are felt; and an intrinsic meniscus region where capillary forces dominate. In this work, a simplified model based on the augmented Young-Laplace equation is developed and an analytical solution is obtained to more easily evaluate the total heat transfer in the thin-film region. The results are consistent with previously published numerical solutions. The pre

Cellulose nitrate (CN) is a semi-synthetic polymer rendering outstanding film properties such as good transparency, and water resistance, thus finds its major utilization in coating industry. Raw CN has water and isopropyl alcohol by-product at maximum content of approximately 3 and 30 wt%, respectively. The tolerance water level in the CN powder for a potential application as nail polish is investigated in order to produce good film-forming properties. The effect of adding layered silicate clay particles as thixotropic agent in the nail enamel is also examined. The water content was varied at
