Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This article discusses the nexus of religion and media on the basis of an analysis of one example of religion in popular culture: the expansion of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series in the book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2001) and the subsequent film by the same title connected to the book (directed by David Yates, screenplay by J.K. Rowling 2016). I present a study of religion-based, media-focused approach to film analysis that distinguishes between verbal and non-verbal aspects of mediation. The analysis treats the mediation of religion – traditional religion, magic and monstrous beings – in the film, as well as the mediality of the film. The analysis shows that the film forms part of a broader trend that portrays traditional religion as ossified and authoritative, while magic, monsters and green religion are represented as fascinating and attractive. Moreover, I argue that the mediality of the film sustains a blurring of boundaries between worlds in terms of the film-internal world structure, in terms of the diegetic vs. the afilmic world, and in terms of the hu-man vs. the nonhuman world. The key argument of the article is that pop-cultural me-dia constitute an important arena for religion, as media such as fantasy films both re-flect and form religious transformations today. This arena needs more attention in the study of religion.
Rowling 2016).

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract: The objective of this article is to analyze the characteristics of French television broadcasts that approach the theme of favelas (slums) in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in TV programs aired from April 1964 to May 2003. The purpose was not to analyze the images per se, but to identify the characteristics of audiovisuals dealing with the issue of favelas, in terms of the programs, the themes covered, duration, and the time of the day in which the programs were broadcasted. Two different data basis were used from the Inathèque de France, namely the Dépôt Legal and the Archives INA TV (IMAGO). Analysis of the results suggests a sharp social division in Rio de Janeiro through the image of the favelas as reported on French TV under the genre of news broadcasts and magazines, mostly aired from 11:31 to13:30 PM), on channels TF1, FR2, and FR3 (70% of broadcasts). Longer genres such as documentaries, tending to produce a more in-depth analysis and sometimes proposing a broader explanation of the phenomenon were generally only aired after 10:30 PM, both on the FR2, FR3, Canal+ and Arte channels. The conclusion highlights that Rio de Janeiro’s socio-spatial structure is more complex than that captured by such a dualistic model. The city’s socio-spatial nuances are lacking in the audiovisual programs broadcasted by French TV, and the approach to the favela issue is thus based on a mythical-romantic view as portrayed in Black Orpheus, by Marcel Camus. Keywords: Rio de Janeiro; social division image; slums; Inathèque de France; television broadcasts.

Abstract:
Tema blir ironi, upålitelighet, subjektivitet, karakterengasjement og kronologi. Anvendte teoretikere inkluderer Linda Hutcheon, Sarah Kozloff, Thomas Elsaesser, Gerard Genette, Seymour Chatman, André Bazin, Murray Smith og Lars Thomas Braaten.

Abstract:
Uppsatsen analyserar C.S.

Abstract:
This is a study about adaptation, focusing on the first book in the series about Harry Potter and the movie version of the book. The study examines whether any of the characters change when the book is adapted to another type of medium. For example, are there any character traits that are revealed differently in the book versus the movie? The materials that have been used are works of reference, the first book about Harry Potter and also the film of the book. Some of the literature has already been read prior to the study but will still be needed as the study continues.By the end of the study there should be some results to be shown. The primary purpose of the study is to clarify the differences and similarities that can appear when a work is transferred, for example, from book to film.

Abstract:
Selma Lagerlöf's story about Nils Holgersson, The wonderful Adventures of Nils (1906-1907), is unique in several different ways. It was innovative for its time and it was the first school book written as a story, which makes it an interesting foundation to build an essay upon. The essay examines Selma Lagerlöf's novel about Nils Holgersson compared to Dirk Regel's film adaptation (2011). Both the novel and the film are divided into two parts and only the first part of the book is compared to the first part of the film. Adaptations are common in today's society, a common type of adaptation is when a novel transform into a film but it can also be when a poem becomes music or a play turns into a film. The essay discusses what happens when a medium is transformed into another medium. The essay also has a pedagogical perspective and asks what happens when a didactic school book is adapted into a film. The view on children in Lagerlöf's time is discussed in relation to the view on children that prevails in today's society. When it comes to characters, I’m interested in seeing how Nils Holgersson is portrayed in the book versus in the film. The method used is Linda Hutcheon's and Siobhan O'Flynn’s adaptation analysis which focuses is on various factors that affect an adaptation. Regarding theory, I will use both Thomas Leitch’s adaptation theory and Maria Nikolajeva's children's literature theory. The results show that Lagerlöf's Nils Holgersson is a character who has few qualities. In the beginning he is bad and at the end of the story he becomes good, he develops through the story and is thus a flat but dynamic character. In Regel's version, Nils Holgersson is a complex character from beginning to end and he does not develop, he is thus a round but static character. The didactic perspective it is not as prevalent in the film compared to the book, but some episodes can be understood as having an educational message, which I interpret as a reference to the source medium.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract The development of digital media technologies like the MP3 file and the smartphone has changed the status of the audiobook from being a by-product of the printed book to being a mass medium in its own right. This chapter takes a context and user perspective on audiobooks and asks the fundamental question: to what extent can one say that one ‘reads’ an audiobook? Based on the Danish author Helle Helle’s novel Ned til hundene (Down to the Dogs, 2008), the authors discuss how the audiobook experience as a whole can be analysed regarding ‘technological framing’, ‘reading situations’ and ‘the performing voice’. They also investigate audiobook reading in relation to the experience of time and depth.

Abstract:
Moving to the science fiction genre, but remaining within the field of allegory, Chapter Thirteen sees Christine Muller scrutinise one of the most economically successful and culturally impactful genre variations to emerge from the American film industry in the last two decades, the renaissance of the superhero film. While it is an emergence which has been criticised by many (see Alan Moore's criticism of it as a "cultural catastrophe" in Flood, 2014), its impact has been so profound that to dismiss it seems imprudent, and, as Richard Gray and Betty Kaklamanidou observed in their The 21st Century Superhero Essays on Gender, Genre and Globalization in Film (2011), in many ways the 2000s were the 'decade of the superhero' (Gray and Kaklamanidou 1). Indeed, one can deal a great deal about a culture by its heroic mythology. Just as the ancient Greeks had tales of Hercules and Achilles, late nineteenth century America turned to mythologised stories of Wyatt Earp and Davy Crockett, in the twentieth century and into twenty-first, western culture found its heroic ideals embodied in comic-book heroes like Superman, Batman and Spider-Man. In Muller's chapter, "Post-9/11 Power and Responsibility in the Marvel Cinematic Universe", she considers the relationship between the superhero film and the tumultuous post-9/11 era, exploring the ideological function of superhero narratives. Muller looks at how the Marvel Cinematic Universe often returned to trauma in a variety of forms in their films which frequently emerge not as bloated blockbusters empty of resonance, but texts which engage with the decade in deeply revealing ways (see DiPaolo and McSweeney). Far removed from the cartoonish fantasyscapes of Salkind era Superman (1977) or the increasingly extravagant excesses of Tim Burton and Joel Schumacher's Batman years, the real world set Marvel Cinematic Universe films, beginning with Iron Man (2008), are deeply immersed in what we might call the ongoing 'War on Terror' narrative. While some writers have dismissed the genre as perpetuating hegemonic ideological systems (see Hassler-Forrest) Muller argues that they are able to, at times, offer more than the conservative world view they are primarily associated with. The defining events of the 'War on Terror' era thus become replayed in the MCU through the melodramatic spectacle of the superhero genre.

Abstract:
With network musical castoffs like Fame and The Muppet Show hitting it big in syndication and viewers defecting to public TV, the eighties proved challenging for ABC, CBS, and NBC. Simultaneously, viewers lucky enough to live in early-served cable markets could circumvent the networks altogether. Seeing the writing on the wall, the networks jumped into the cable arena with a string of niche performing arts channels, with CBS Cable, Alpha Repertory Theatre Service (ARTS), and The Entertainment Channel (TEC) providing viewers a new cache of musical programming. The resultant interplay between television’s heavy hitters, video distributors, and Broadway royalty like the Nederlanders highlights this as a time of high stakes for various forms of musical entertainment. That said, it was MTV and its embrace of teens and the music video tie-ins of popular dance films like Footloose and Flashdance that won the battle for the cable-based musical market.

This chapter examines the relation between various firm-specific variables and the cross-section of equity returns in 26 developed countries. Univariate portfolio analyses using equal-weighted returns show that low beta, book-to-market equity, and momentum analysis are also priced in the cross-section of developed market returns, whereas short-term reversal and downside beta manifest themselves in the opposite direction. Univariate portfolio analysis based on value-weighted returns reveal that the predictive power of book-to-market equity and short-term reversal is driven by small stocks. Multivariate firm-level cross-sectional regression analysis document that momentum, short-term reversal, illiquidity, idiosyncratic volatility, hybrid tail risk, lower partial moment are related to expected stock returns. Overall, the most robust cross-sectional predictor in developed market is found to be return momentum.

Full text
Abstract:
These final chapters discuss how two vastly different reworkings of Dickens’s Oliver Twist serve as distinct examples of the problems of adaptation as a method of resistance. Viewing Oliver’s marginalized status within the context of postcolonial theory highlights parallels between domestic orphans and populations colonized by the British imperial project. Turning to Tim Greene’s independently financed, internationally distributed adaptation Boy Called Twist (2004), I highlight the director’s use of orphanhood to address both the poverty and AIDS epidemic that erupted in the wake of Britain’s imperial control of the region as well as the contemporary cooption of the “global orphan” by foreign governments and non-governmental aid organizations (NGOs) that frames transnational aid discourse. Applying Dickens’s social concerns to the orphans of post-Apartheid South Africa and appropriating Dickens’ racial depictions of characters such as Fagin to represent South Africa’s black and Muslim communities, Greene’s film exposes ties between Victorian England’s domestic and imperial policies, making parallels to the contemporary dynamic occurring between industrialized countries and developing nations.

Abstract:
The plot of Strangers on a Train revolves around a crisscross murder scheme in which a psychotic playboy (Robert Walker) suggests trading murders with a tennis player (Farley Granger). He offers to murder the tennis player’s cheating wife if, in return, the tennis player will murder the playboy’s rich father. The tennis player fails to take the offer seriously, until the playboy strangles his wife and awaits the tit-for-tat murder of the playboy’s father. In the Patricia Highsmith book on which the film is based, the tennis player is blackmailed into committing the reciprocal murder. But this plot element could not survive the Code’s admonition against letting murderers go unpunished, altering the scope and tone of the source material. After influencing this major plot change, the Production Code office was relatively quiet on other points, suggesting that the blame for the tennis player’s failed marriage be laid clearly on the cheating wife, and warning against attempts to portray the playboy’s attraction to the tennis player as homosexual, an attraction that Hitchcock planted, nurtured, and did not excise.

Opening with The Murder of Emmett Till, which launched award-winning Firelight Media’s long-standing community engagement enterprise, Chapter 3 serves as the heart of the book—the theoretical and pragmatic backdrop to today’s participatory civic media culture, positioning documentaries and parallel public engagement work as forms of cultural resistance, civic imagination, and social critique. Documentaries play an active role in democratic practice through their functions as civic storytelling—as counternarratives, monitors, mobilizers, and artistic interpreters that can reveal the depth of a social issue and strengthen civil society through collaboration and partnerships. Simultaneously, grassroots activism has changed in the networked era. Examples and initiatives help bring documentary functions to life, including the international Good Pitch program, and films like Whose Streets?, When I Walk, An Inconvenient Truth, Minding the Gap, Newtown, Strong Island, Surviving R. Abstract:
As we wrote the first draft of this chapter (during early summer 2007), the potential dangers of ‘global warming’ had moved up the news agenda to a point where most major politicians were starting to take the problem seriously. Our opening quotation comes from a book published in early 2006, which seemed to coincide with the growth of this wider concern with global warming. Lovelock was not alone in trying to raise awareness of the problem; around the same time another book on climate change by the zoologist and palaeontologist Tim Flannery also attracted global attention to this issue, as did the lecture tours (and Oscar-winning film) of Al Gore—the former US presidential candidate and campaigner on the dangers of climate change. Indeed, in his role as a climate campaigner Gore won a share in the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. It is possible that future historians will see the period 2005–2007 as the start of a crucial wider engagement with these problems. Things may not be as bad as James Lovelock suggests—in his book he deliberately emphasized the most worrying scenarios coming from computer models, and other evidence, in an attempt to draw attention to the critical nature of the problem. However, all these worst case scenarios were drawn from within the range of results that most climate scientists believed could plausibly happen—not extreme cases with little current evidence to support them. That one of the major environmental scientists of the second half of the twentieth century could write such prose as science—rather than science fiction—is clearly a case for concern about future climate change. It also raises another important question, relating to the history of human influence on our planet: when in our history did we start to have major environmental impacts on Earth as a whole? This is clearly an important issue from a historical perspective, but the answers may also have implications for some of our attempts to rectify the damage. Our discussion of this question comes with various caveats. Many of the arguments we consider in this chapter are still the subject of academic disagreement.

Abstract:
Abstract Various detector chips in optocoupler devices have a thin indium tin oxide (ITO) film deposited over the passivation. This transparent, conductive film is found over the photodetecting area of the die. When this film is electrically connected to ground potential through contacts, it acts as a shield to avoid inversion failures by sinking any charge buildup to ground. In order to perform a full electrical failure analysis on these optocoupler detector chips, the ITO layer must be removed. An extensive search found numerous papers on etching this film over glass substrates, but no known technique was found to selectively remove the ITO layer on a packaged die. This paper discusses an approach to remove this film using an argon gas etch technique. The ideal characteristics of any process used to remove this film on a finished die would be to completely etch the ITO layer, electrically isolating it from ground, while leaving the underlying passivation and metallization fully intact. This would allow for further electrical failure analysis of the die without causing additional damage or affecting the failure mechanism. The results of an experiment using various chemical and gas etchants found that an argon gas etch would remove the ITO layer while only slightly etching the phosphosilicate glass (PSG) passivation beneath. Electrical failure analysis of the die continued at this point, and a subsequent buffered oxide etch (BOE) removed the remaining passivation, leaving the exposed metallization and oxide completely intact. This technique has been used successfully on device failures to find passivation contamination shorting the aluminum metallization to the ITO film.

Abstract:

Abstract:
It has been desirable for years to develop a reasonably simple, direct, accurate, and reliable method to measure pressure distributions in railroad trackbeds, especially the pressure magnitudes and distributions at the tie-ballast interface. In this study, specially-designed granular material pressure cells were used to measure pressure magnitudes and distributions. The cells were placed directly under the rail-tie intersection at the tie-ballast interface. Initially, a MTS test machine was used to conduct a series of laboratory tie-ballast box tests for a wide variation of ballast types and loading configurations. The adequacy of the cells for in-track measurements was verified with a series of very controlled laboratory tests and measurements using simulated trackbed sections and loading conditions. Excellent correlations were obtained comparing applied machine pressures and measured transferred cell pressures indicating that this type of pressure cell is suitable for in-track tie-ballast pressure measurements. This preliminary testing sequence is briefly described. A series of in-track wood tie tests were conducted on a yard lead track on a shortline railroad, Transkentucky Transportation, to optimize the in-track installation procedures and to obtain pressure measurements using repeated passes of low-speed locomotives and cars. A normalized pressure distribution was obtained by using metal shims when necessary to fill voids between the ties and pressure cells to insure continuous tie-ballast contact. This test sequence is presented and described. Additional in-track tests were conducted on Norfolk Southern Railway’s heavy tonnage concrete tie Class 4 mainline with train speeds of up to 64 km/h. Data was obtained for numerous passages of revenue trains over a period of several months for variable weights and types of locomotives and freight cars at typical train speeds. The average pressure intensities at the tie-ballast interface were acquired for six consecutive ties comprising a complete revolution of the wheels. This data is presented and the results discussed.

Abstract:
The British intervention in Malaya resulted in the development of the railways as urgency of the expanding tin and rubber industries. This paper attempted to emphasize on the evolution of the station buildings’ plan types and its train-sheds. Railways were the pioneers of modern transportation introduced by the British in 1885 in Malaya. Although the terrain was the main difficulties in railway developments, they managed to connect the lines through West Coast and East Coast lines until Singapore on the southern part and Bangkok on the northern part in the year 1931. Case studies have been conducted and the analysis on plan type evolution will be made between the station buildings in Malaysia in parallel with station buildings around the world during that time. Together with the growth of the railway, the city blooms where it allows road constructions and buildings with different functions such as administrative buildings, railway station buildings and others started to fill major urban places.

Abstract:
Heat transfer and flow characteristics of Taylor flow in vertical capillaries with tube diameters ranging from 0.5 mm to 2 mm have been investigated numerically with the Volume of Fluid (VOF) method. Streamlines, bubble shapes, pressure drops, and heat transfer characteristics of Taylor flow were investigated in detail. The results indicate that the dimensionless bubble length increases with increasing Re, while the variation of diameters have slight influence on it. A flat tail and sharper nose bubble with longer bubble length and thicker film thickness are obtained at higher Re for the increasing inertia force. Pressure drops in liquid slug region are higher than single phase flow because of the Laplace pressure drop. The flow pattern dependent model and modified separate model in this work can predict the simulation data well with a MAE of 2.416% and 2.289%, respectively. Bo and Re are adopted in the modified separate model to taking surface tension, gravity, inertia, and viscous force into account. The wall temperature Tw increases along X axis in liquid region, and gets its peak at the tail of Taylor bubble region. Nutp, which is about 1.2∼3 times of fully developed single phase flow with constant wall heat flux, is negatively proportional to the dimensionless liquid slug length (Ls*). Taylor flow can enhance the heat transfer efficiently.

Abstract:
Reliable quantification of wettability is critical in assessment of fluid distribution, capillary pressure, relative permeability, and flow properties of fluids in reservoirs. Wettability of reservoirs can be affected by chemical composition of rock-fluid system, salinity, and reservoir temperature. Experimental assessment of wettability under reservoir conditions, while gaining control on the aforementioned parameters, may be tedious and challenging. Several published researches have used experimental studies to focus on determining the impact of individual factors on wettability of rock. However, studies on the combined effects of these factors are limited, although critical, for better understanding of wettability of hydrocarbon reservoirs. In this paper we introduce a workflow for assessment of wettability of rocks at reservoir condition using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The outcomes include (i) quantifying the wettability of pure minerals, (ii) quantifying the impact of reservoir temperature on wettability of pure mineral. The inputs to the simulation include molecules of pure minerals (quartz, calcite, albite) packed in a cubical simulation box. The molecules are condensed to form a flat surface. Subsequently, water and oil (hexane) molecules are placed on the surface of the mineral. We then perform simulations with constant number of particles, temperature and volume (NVT) on the system till equilibrium is reached. At equilibrium, the contact angle formed by the water droplet is measured. Contact angle is simulated for temperature conditions in the range of 300 to 380 K. The results showed that the contact angle between water-mineral for quartz, calcite, and albite at room temperature (300 K) ranges from 30º to 45º, indicating that the surface of these minerals is hydrophilic, with different degrees of hydrophilicity. This information is essential for reliable fluid flow simulations, which are often overlooked in conventional approaches. We also found that the temperature has a measurable impact on the contact angles formed by water droplet. We found that increase in temperature from 300 to 380 K decreases the contact angles by approximately 30% on quartz surfaces, 20% on albite surfaces, and 24% on calcite surfaces. The results for the hexane-mineral system show that the hexane behaved similarly in the three minerals surface. A thin film of hexane is formed at the surface corresponding to a contact angle of 0º. The method introduced in this paper has application for reliable evaluation of wettability at any reservoir of interest by knowing the molecular structure of clay and non-clay minerals as well as fluid content. Moreover, the challenges of wettability determination under high temperature and pressure conditions can also be efficiently addressed by using molecular dynamics simulations.
