In this work, a seeding technique was used to synthesize films and membranes of FAU, LTA and MFI type zeolites. In the first part, hydrothermal growth was performed without organic template molecules, which resulted in template-free zeolite films and membranes. The samples were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy, X-ray Powder Diffraction and permeation measurements with gaseous probe molecules. Over the past years, the synthesis of zeolite films has attracted considerable attention due to their potential applications as membranes, sensors, and insulators with low dielectric constant. Therefore, the preparation of high quality defect free zeolite films with controlled film orientation and thickness is highly desired. Silicalite-l nanocrystals were functionalised via ultrasonic treatment in alcohol (methanol, ethanol, 2-propanol and I-butanol) suspensions. The formation of methoxy groups on the external surface of silicalite-l was confirmed by nitrogen adsorption porosimetry analysis.

In the h0h-oriented membranes, defects were sealed by a sol-gel technique, while in the c-oriented MFI membranes, defects could be sealed in situ by introducing a third strongly adsorbing species in the feed stream.
