Full textThe following thesis presents an examination of privately produced amateur films taken from the Amateur Film Archive in the Centre National d’Audiovisuel in Luxembourg. It analyzes how amateur films present a filmic world and examines specific notions of meaning generation without meta-data and original context. Rather than take amateur film as a homogenous genre or practice, this study concentrates on film language. The first part of the following two-fold engagement with these filmic worlds thus identifies the highly differentiated filmic modes that can be read from theimages. A filmic mode is related to as a concomitance of style and choice in subjectmatter. Without original context, these films lose their most important means ofmeaning generation, namely the recollective narratives that are constructed by theintended audience in the viewing situation. This work takes these images as remnantsof a visual narration rather than in terms of recollective narratives. It operates from the very simple basis that how the camera was used can serve as illustration of underlying intentions and motivations—both intended and inadvertent. The first partof this study then focuses on the diversification within the images and reads concomitant cultural codifications that structure representational productions in the private and also analyzes film language as means of self-narration. The second part of this two-fold engagement explores filmic language in terms of a visualization of primordial signifying expression coming-into-being. This engagement extends to include the researcher and his/her own background as co-constitutive part of this process of primordial meaning

Of the eighteen films produced by the Senegalese Ousmane Sembène, five are adaptations of his novels and novellas. In the case of Guelwaar, his sixth and last adaptation, it is the novel which he adapted to the film of the same name. Sembène, who considered himself to be a "modem griot", felt that cinema was a more effective medium to reach his people and deliver his message. Once copies of all six films had been obtained, two with great difficulty as they were never commercially released, the cinematic techniques which Sembène used to convey his ideology were carefully studied and then compared to the literary techniques utilised in his writings.

Full textEthnic identity can be subject to both passive and overt review, which has the potential to cause traumatic fracture of identity. I am a second generation American-Puerto Rican, which can be defined as a person born in the United States of native Puerto Rican ancestry. Personal identity is constructed in part via social and linguistic associations that work with, and against, the cohesive development of an individual’s claim to his or her identity. From the standpoint of a non-fluent Spanish speaker of Puerto Rican descent, I analyze the connection between place, language, and in particular, face-to-face communication, as these aspects come together in developing/disassembling identity. The major focus of this thesis concerns the power of the face as a point of (mis)recognition between people, the site in which a confrontation of identity takes place, in conjunction with spoken language.
The face is the essential locus on the body for recognizing that the person before you is indeed a person; from that point forth, identity is revealed and awareness of subjectivity constructed. Stuart Hall discussed the construction of identity through the concepts of the enlightened subject, the sociological subject, and the post-modern subject. I will be referring to an individual’s identity in terms of these three models, while focusing on ethnic and cultural associations. It should be understood that in my discussion of face, “face” is not comprised solely of what rests above one’s shoulders; rather, the concept incorporates the entirety of an individual’s physical representation. I will question the ways in which language shapes identity, and how culture(s) and society reinforce it. I will also explore the conflict that unfolds when one is denied ownership of the identity that one has established as true. This analysis incorporates philosophy and cultural theory, including, but not limited to: Emmanuel Levinas’ “Face of the Other,” which professes that we must not inflict conceptual violence on the face of the person standing before us; additionally, Gloria Anzaldúa’s theory of the ethnic face and haciendo cara (making face), which states that minorities (women in particular) must construct layers of masks in order to adapt, and to deflect persecution.
Language defines the borders of “face,” and urges us to construct a binary of correct and incorrect, true and false. However, a person’s identity cannot be false, because subjectivity exists beyond language. In the context of this thesis, I re-frame the individual’s frustrations with misrecognition of ethnic identity, through my focus on face and fluency, or lack thereof, in a particular spoken language. Through my video practice, I have forged a new pathway to explore these dualities. In a self-revelatory process, this project guides the viewer through a mixed media visualization of ethnic authentication and judgment.

Full textThe thesis explores numerous and different relations between the city andfilm medium. It has been considered how cinematic images of urbanlandscape have become their integral, inseparable part, and how thisinfluences changes in the perception of architectural spaces and the urbanenvironment, as well as changes in the way in which people interact withthem. By examining the representation of cities in films, urban developmenttrends have been studied and socio-spatial changes taking place in largeEuropean and North American cities from the beginning of the 20th centuryto the present day have been analyzed and interpreted.

Over the past decade, an increasing number of studies have explored the structure and role of multimodal texts in contemporary society (Böhlke, 2008; Ferreira, 2011; Heberle & Meurer, 2007; Iedema, 2001; Kress & van Leeuwen, 1996; 2006; Thibault, 2000). Following the early focus on still images, more recent research has addressed the dynamic text (O'Halloran, 2004). In this context, the present research investigates the identities of women (Butler, 1990, 1993, 2004; Benwell & Stokoe, 2006) construed in the first film Sex and the City (2008) in terms of both verbal language (Halliday, 1994; Halliday & Matthiessen, 2004; Martin, Matthiessen & Painter, 2010) and the dynamic image (Bateman, 2007, 2009; Bednarek, 2010; Böhlke, 2008, Iedema, 2001; O'Halloran, 2004; Thibault, 2000; Tseng, 2009; van Leeuwen, 1991, 1999) as well as their intermodal complementarity (Painter & Martin, in press), focusing on coupling and commitment (Martin, 2008a, 2008b, 2010). Verbal language is addressed in terms of ideational meanings by means of transitivity analysis (Halliday & Matthiessen, 2004) and the analysis of the dynam image is carried out by following the multi-level procedures proposed by Baldry and Thibault (2005). Regarding the film text, overall results show that it affords more meanings than the still images in systemic functional terms, which has contributed to more effective intermodal complementarity. Considering the identities of women construed, data analysis has demonstrated that the coupling of meanings committed suggests that (young) women's main pursuit in life is fashion labels and heteronormative love. Additionally, overall results also reveal that women are mostly involved in processes of 'action' as dynamic participants, which highlights the space in the filmic text for the 'doings', 'happenings'' and 'behaviors' in which women take on the active role. However, as in Bezerra (2008), the discourse analysis (Fairclough, 2003; van Leeuwen, 2008) of women's social actions has shown that they are considerably constrained to the domestic, nonspecialized field (Martin, 1992). These results seem to confirm the role of the media in maintaining dominant and ideologically invested representations of women (Bhabha, 1992), which need to be continuously challenged, since identities should always be seen as unstable and impermanent (Bauman, 2004).

This dissertation sought to evaluate the potential of a customized, videobased instructional method, the Cultural Video Project (CVP), which was designed to meet the needs of both heritage and non-heritage students learning Korean as a second language in a university setting. The goal of this study was to design and create the CVP, document the implementation of the CVP, and then to assess the effects the CVP had on the area that speakers of English tend to have difficulty with, such as acquisition of honorific systems in Korean. The CVP was a series of short authentic Korean video clips and matching worksheets that the researcher created. The videos were adapted from contemporary Korean broadcasting programs and Korean films. The CVP videos were used during the face-to-face setting classroom meeting sessions as a lesson and after the classroom lesson was over, the videos were available on the school's Internet courseware for students to use for their individual practice and review. Each of the CVP video segments displayed linguistic structures, vocabulary, idiomatic expressions and cultural conventions that were partly addressed in the course's Elementary Korean course materials. The participating professor, Professor Q, helped in selecting the video segments and co-authored the matching worksheets in corporation with the researcher throughout the preparation and implementation period. During the interviews, Professor Q reported changes in her teaching philosophy while creating and implementing the CVP method in her teaching. She reported that the video technology combined with the university's courseware uses created positive impacts on her students' Korean learning experiences such as heightened interest and intense attention that helped to make dynamic and interactive lessons during the classroom meetings. Students reported their responses to the CVP in various forms: Interviews, written self-reports, in-class observation reports, results of the exams and two-forms of standard school course evaluations. The findings reveal that through the CVP practice, students increased their cultural understanding, improved the listening skills, and improved their understanding of language use in a variety of culturally specific social situations.

Full textThis study will investigate variation in the language of American movies over an 80- year time period. The corpus is a collection of 640 movie subtitles that includes comedies, dramas, action-adventure, and horror-suspense movies from 1930 to 2010 totaling, approximately, 7,750,000 tokens and 325,000 types. The sampling frame for the corpus comprised the film guide 1001 Movies you Must See before you Die , in which sixty-seven renowned film critics elected the best movies of each decade, the website www.filmsite.org, as well as nominations for the Oscar, BAFTA, and the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films awards. The corpus was tagged for part of speech with the Biber tagger, and post-processed with the TagCount programs, which provides further syntactic and semantic analyses. This study will provide two different MD analyses, namely one that uses the existing 1988 dimensions to characterize the movies, and another that extracts new dimensions of variation based solely on movies. For the first one, scores were computed for each movie on each of the first five 1988 dimensions, for the corpus as a whole as well as for each individual movie genre. And for the second analysis, a new factor analysis was run to determine the factors that best represent the data, which were then interpreted in terms of underlying dimensions of variation. For both analyses, the effects of a set of independent variables were considered, including year of first screening, award nomination/win, length, genre, director, ratings, original/adapted script and production studio. Cluster analyses were also carried out to determine the optimal groups of movies within each dimension, such that they cut across the existing genre labels and provided characterizations that were grounded on linguistic characteristics rather than marketdriven concerns. The chapter will present each analysis together with text samples that illustrate the salient features of movies on each dimension. It will also present the results for cluster analysis that dissects time periods as well as statistical tests on these clusters that determine whether there are significant differences across movie genres over time.
The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films).

Full textThis paper examines the role of the pioneer Filipino filmmaker Jose Nepomuceno and his films in the Philippine quest for independence and in the process of nation-building. As all of Nepomuceno's films are lost, most of the information was gathered from old newspaper articles on microfilm in different archives in Manila. Many of these articles were hitherto undiscovered. Nepomuceno made silent films at a time when the influence of the new coloniser, United States, was growing, and the Spanish language was what unified the intellectual opposition. Previous research on Nepomuceno has focused on the Hispanic influences on his filmmaking, as well as his connections to the stage drama. This paper argues that Nepomuceno created a national consciousness by making films showing native lives and environments, adapting important Filipino novels and plays to the screen and covering important political topics and thereby creating public opinion. Many reviews in the newspapers connected his films to nation-building and independence, as the creation of a national consciousness is a cornerstone in the process of building a nation and defining "Filipino". Furthermore, the films of Nepomuceno helped spreading the Tagalog culture and language to other parts of the Philippines, hence making Tagalog the foundation of the national Filipino language.

Full textNowadays in different analytical laboratories there is the increasing number of analytical protocols, either based on highly sophisticated or simpler measurements techniques, which serving for determination of different target analytes of pharmacological importance. Among such target groups of the analyte belongs the antibiotics which present a great discovery in the field of medicine and thanks to them were saved more than seven million people but beside to the mentioned great benefits, antibiotics can cause a large number of side effects and bile acids together with their derivatives which are physiological detergents but if their concentration is notcontrolled they can be cytotoxic to the body. In the present doctoral dissertation the development of analytical methods, primarily analytical voltammetric methods in combination with simple and contemporary electrodes/sensors, for the determination of selected analytes as antracycline antibiotic doxorubicin (DOX), macrolide antibiotics erythromycin ethylsuccinate (EES), azithromycin (AZI), clarithromycin (CLA) and roxithromycin (ROX) and 3-dehydrodeoxycholic acid were performed.Voltammetric characterization and determination of the above mentioned antibiotics using a renewable silver-amalgam film electrode (Hg(Ag)FE) was performed by direct cathodic square-wave voltammetry (SWV) and by highly sensitive adsorptive square-wave voltammetry (SW-AdSV) in aqueous Britton-Robinson buffer solutions as supporting electrolyte covering the wider pH range. The Hg(Ag)FE response of DOX was monitored in the potential range between -0.20 and -0.80 V. For the trace level analysis the method optimization showed that the optimal conditions for the analytical peak with peak potential (Ep) at -0.57 V vs. SCE were: the pH 6.0, the accumulation potential -0.20 V, and the accumulation time 140 s. In the model solutions, DOX was determined in the concentration range of 4.99-59.64 ng mL-1. The developed SWAdSV method was applied for the determination of DOX in spiked human urine sample. The lowest concentration of DOX of 9.89 ng mL-1 in voltammetric vessel was determined with the relative standard deviation (RSD) less than 6%. As for the investigated macrolides, they showed reduction signals in fairly negative potential range. During direct cathodic SWV investigations conducted over the potential range from -0.75 V to -2.00 V vs. SCE, either one or two reduction peaks were obtained in the potential range from -1.5 to -1.9 V. For analytical purposes concerning the development of direct cathodic SWV and adsorptive stripping SWV methods the neutral and slightly alkaline media were suitable as pH 7.0 with Ep at -1.67 V vs. SCE for ROX and EES and pH 7.2 and pH 7.4 with Ep at -1.85 V and -1.64 V vs. SCE for AZI and CLA, respectively. Based on the cyclic voltammograms recorded at these pH values, adsorptioncontrolled electrode kinetics process can be proposed for all four investigated compounds. The water suppressed 1H NMR measurements in the pH range between 6.0 and 10.5 indicated that the macrolide molecules at the optimal analytical conditions are predominantly in protonated form via their tertiary amino groups which supported in all four cases their adsorption on the appropriately polarized Hg(Ag)FE electrode. The optimized direct cathodic SWV methods showed good linearity in concentration ranges 4.81-23.3 μg mL-1, 4.53-29.8 μg mL-1, 1.96-28.6 μg mL-1, and 1.48-25.9 μg mL-1 for AZI, EES, CLA and ROX, respectively. The SW-AdSV methods resulted in the linear responses at lower concentration ranges as 1.0-2.46 μg mL-1, 0.69- 2.44 μg mL-1, 0.05-0.99 μg mL-1 and 0.10-0.99 μg mL-1, for AZI, EES, CLA and ROX, respectively. The RSD for all developed methods was not higher than 1.5% except the SWV method for AZI with 4.7%. The direct cathodic SWV method was successfully applied for the determination of EES in the pharmaceutical preparation Eritromicin®, while SW-AdSV was tested in the case of the spiked urine sample and for determination of ROX in pharmaceutical preparation Runac®. In all above cases, the standard addition method was used. The reliability and accuracy of the above procedures in the case of EES determination in model system and pharmaceutical preparation Eritromicin® were validated by comparing them with those obtained by means of HPLC-DAD measurements. After initial study of 3-dehydro-deoxycholic acid/3-dehydro-deoxycholate by glassy carbon electrode, where the absence of any reduction peak was observed in the Britton-Robinson buffer solutions between pH 5.0 and 11.8 by direct cathodic SWV, a bismuth-film was electrodeposited ex situ on the same glassy carbon electrode surface (BiF-GCE) from the usually used plating solution (0.02 mol L-1 Bi(NO3)3, 1.0 mol L-1 HCl and 0.5 mol L-1 KBr) and such prepared film-electrode was applied for the characterization and determination of the the target analyte in alkaline media. The reduction signal of analytical importance was observed only by BiF-GCE in Britton-Robinson buffer solutions with pH values between 9.5 and 11.8 in adsorptive stripping square-wave voltammetry working regime, while in the case of the direct cathodic SWV experimental protocol only a very poor reduction peak was obtained. The optimized experimental conditions for the 3-dehydro-deoxycholate determination consist of the optimized electrode conditioning including the electrochemical cycling of the ex situ prepared BiF-GCE potentials in the potential span between -1.0 and -2.0 V vs. SCE (nearly 15 times) in the Britton-Robinson supporting electrolyte pH 11.8 till the stabilization of the baseline current, and the application of two key parameters of the adsorptive square-wave voltammetric protocol: the accumulation time as 30 s and accumulation potential as -1.0 V vs. SCE. Because of the relative asymmetry of the obtained reduction signals of the target analyte with peak Ep at -1.35 V vs. SCE, which is still present in the case of the SW-AdSV, the quantification of the target analyte was based on the linear correlation between peak area of the reduction signal and its appropriate concentrations, and reached limit of detection is 1.43 μg mL-1 and with two linear ranges of calibration curve from 4,76 μg mL-1 to 13.0 μg mL-1 and from 13,0 μg mL-1 to 23,1 μg mL-1 for the development of analytical method. The RSD of the method was 3.22%. Additional experiments were performed applying GCE with rectangular form (area 35.32 cm2) modified with ex situ prepared bismuth-film for the electrolysis of the target analyte which was performed at the potential -1.55 V (nearly the peak maxima of the target analyte) vs. SCE. The solution of interest was sampled at the beginning of the experiment, after 2.5 h and after 4.5 h of treatment. Such samples were analysed by simply water suppressing 1H NMR measurements in the buffered solution at pH 11.8. It can be assumed that during electrolysis of 3-dehydrodeoxycholate the reduction of the keto group present in the structure of the target analyte can be occurred.Driven by earlier literature data about the fact that some of the target macrolide antibiotics as e.g. azithromycin showed oxidation behavior at a carbon paste and gold working electrodes detailed characterization and determination of four target macrolide antibiotics were performed on classical carbon paste electrode (CPE) constituted only from graphite powder and paraffin oil with optimized direct anodic SWV methods. In the cases of EES and AZI differential pulse voltammetric (DPV) methods were tested for the same purpose as well. The key parameter in the case of the development of the analytical voltammetric methods is the selection of the pH value of the supporting electrolyte where the shape/simmetry and intensity of the oxidation peak were the criteria. As the appropriate pH value for determination of EES by SWV method the pH 8.0 was selected with Ep at 0.83 V vs. SCE while in the case of the DPV method the pH 12.0 with Ep at 0.55 V vs. SCE was the most suitable for analytical purpose. As for AZI determination, in the case of both SWV and DPV methods the pH 7.0 was the most appropriate supporting electrolyte with the Ep of analytical signal at 0.85 V and 0.80 V vs. SCE, respectively, while in the case of CLA and ROX which were investigated only with SWV method for the analytical purposes the pH 12.0 was the most suitable with Ep at 0.65 V and at 0.63 V vs. SCE. The obtained detection limits applying the bare CPE and the direct anodic SWV are mainly in submicrogram concentration range as 0.17 μg mL-1; 0.32 μg mL-1 and 0.30 μg mL-1 for EES, AZI, and ROX and in the low microgram concentration range as 1.43 μg mL-1 for the CLA, respectively. The developed method succesfully tested for the determination of ROX in the commercial formulation, Runac® tablet. In the case of the optimized DPV methods the obtained detection limits for EES and AZI are in the low microgram concentration range 1.03 μg mL-1 and 1.53 μg mL-1, respectively. For the improvement of the sensitivity for AZI the DPV method was tested in combination with a CPE working electrode surface modified with gold nanoparticles with diameter of 10 nm (Au-CPE) and reached the limit of detection was 0.95 μg mL-1 at Ep of 0.80 V vs. SCE. The RSD of the method in the case of the Au-CPE is 3.5% while in the case of the native CPE 6.0%. The linearity of the Au-CPE based analytical method is twice wider then it is case with the bare CPE applying protocol.Based on the obtained results it can be conclude that the appropriate combination of the optimized voltammetric pulse techniques and the environmentally friendly and easy to use working electrodes as Hg(Ag)FE, BiF-GCE and CPE together with Au-CPE resulted in the development of reliable analytical method either in the oxidation or reduction studies, often allowing trace level determination of pharmacological importance target analytes in simpler and in some case complexes systems.

Full textThe present dissertation examines empirically the linguistic features characterizing American face-to-face and movie conversation, two domains which are usually claimed to differ especially in terms of spontaneity. Natural conversation is, indeed, considered the quintessence of the spoken language for it is totally spontaneous, whereas movie conversation is usually described as non-spontaneous, being artificially written-to-be spoken and, thus, not likely to represent the general usage of conversation. In spite of what is generally maintained by the literature, both the Multi-Dimensional analysis and the micro-analysis of the functions of you know based on authentic data retrieved from corpora show that the two conversational domains do not differ to a great extent and thus confutes the claim that movie language has “a very limited value” in that it does not reflect natural conversation and, consequently, is “not likely to be representative of the general usage of conversation”.

Full textThis thesis is concerned with the voltammetric characterization and determination of five neonicotinoid insecticides (imidacloprid, thiamethoxam, clothianidin, nitenpyram and acetamiprid) at different carbon-based electrodes such as carbon paste, glassy carbon and bismuth-film modified glassycarbon. In addition to the investigations in model solutions, the developed highly sensitive differential pulse voltammetric methods were applied for the determination of neonicotinoids in real samples. Neonicotinoids were determined in river water samples, commercial formulations, and their photolytic and photocatalytic degradation was also monitored. To confirm the voltammetric results, comparative measurements were performed by liquid chromatography with diode-array detector and infrared spectrometry. Detection of some degradation products formed during the photodegradation processes was monitored using liquid chromatography with tandem mass-spectrometric detection. The surface structure of CR 5 graphite powder, tricresyl phosphate-based carbon paste electrode and glassy carbon electrode was investigated by scanning electron microscopy.

Full textIn this work, the electrochemical methods for the determination of histamine weredeveloped. All electrochemical investigations were carried out by chronopotentiometry. The research included optimization of the experimental parameters of electroanalytical techniques and comparison of the mechanism of the analytical signal generation by using the different working electrodes. Upon the development of sample preparation procedure, histamine was determined in different food and beverages. The possibility of applying solid gold electrodes, thin film mercury electrode and thin film nickel electrode for electrochemical determination of histamine was examined. The mechanisms of histamine electrooxidation on different working electrodes were explained and elaborated. Optimization of the experimental parameters of electroanalytical techniques included the selection of appropriate supporting electrolyte and its concentration, and investigation of the influence of initial potential and oxidation current on histamine analytical signal. Beside this, for each electrochemical system sensitivity and reproducibility, selectivity as well as linearity range were defined. The use of thin nickel film electrode resulted in adsorptive accumulation, and in that case the effects of accumulation time and medium temperature on histamine analytical signal were defined. On thin film mercury electrode, histamine analytical signal was generateddue to direct oxidation of histamine by a constant current. On other two electrodes, electrode reactions were coupled with chemical reaction, and histamine oxidation was by ECE mechanism (electrode reaction – chemical reaction – electrode reaction). On solid gold electrode histamine was oxidized indirectly by electrogenerated chlorine, while in the case of thin film nickel electrode combination of catalytic and adsorptive chronopotentiomety was responsible for signal generation. Thin film mercury electrode showed good selectivity for histamine and amino acids concentrations below 5 mg/dm3, but higher concentrations caused the overlapping of analytical signals. Other electrochemical systems did not show adequate selectivity. The best sensitivity was achived by thin film nickel electrode (LOD = 0.11 mg/dm3),followed by a solid gold electrode (LOD = 0.27 mg/dm3), and by thin film mercury electrode (LOD = 1.31 mg/dm3). In order to define adequate sample preparation procedure, the efficiency of different extraction techniques and different solvents were tested for histamine extraction from the samples. Appropriate procedures for purification of extracts were defined as well, by applying preparative thin layer and column chromatography. After optimization of the electrochemical methods for histamine determination, as well as the procedure of sample preparation, developed methods were applied for histamine determination in various food and beverages.

Full textOne of the main goals of the research in language acquisition has been to understand in which ways the learning or acquisition processes occur, and to propose methodological alternatives which are able to promote authentic communication in classroom, enabling learners to take part in a range of communicative situations found in daily life. Among the communicative approaches, the task based-language teaching has strongly been regarded as an option that permits both the development of desirable communicative skills, through authentic practice and a focus on meaning, and which also provides room for moments or steps during the task when the learner’s attention be temporarily focused on formal aspects of the target language, without any kind of inversion on the learning priorities, that is, keeping the main focus on the tasks, instead of an excessively strong focus on structural aspects. The present research investigated a project involving the production of a movie review guide book. The project took place in a free language course, where 22 adult participants, learners of English as a foreign language were split into three groups, and were assigned activities that intended to enhance their attention to both text genre-relevant elements and to grammar and lexical aspects during the meetings which happened in midst of the production of 3 reviews by each participant. The chosen procedures sought to investigate in which ways learners had gains in their writing production in relation to those elements and aspects. The data analysis shows that the attention and consciousness-raising activities brought about significantly positive results. In addition, the project has demonstrated that both methodological approaches used to design the task sequence adopted in the research – the task based-language teaching and the use of text genres in didactic sequences – are quite compatible and that they can be very productive in similar future applications in foreign language teaching.

Full textIn past few decades, ferroelectrics are recognized as good candidates for widerange of applications. Barium titanate is one of the most investigated perovskitematerials due to typical ferroelectric behavior at room temperature, with hysteresisdependence of the polarization and electric field. Specified propertiesof BaTiO3 make this material useful in production of capacitors, memories, sensors, etc. Nevertheless, paraelectric phase of BaTiO3 may have applicationin production of microwave tunable devices. Barium titanate shows paraelectricbehavior at temperatures above the Currie temperature (120 °C) and it is greatchallenge to make material paraelectric at room temperature. Partial substitutionof Ba2+ or Ti4+ ions, by Sr2+ or Zr4+, respectively, decreases the Currie temperatureof barium titanate and moves phase transition ferroelectric/paraelectricto lower temperatures. Bulk BaTiO3 was often investigated in order to improvestructure and functionality by addition of dopant, but do not have practicalapplication in microwave tunable technologies. On the other hand, with thetrend of overall miniaturization of electronic devices, thin films are recognizedas good candidates for production of tunable devices. One of the aims in thisresearch was investigation of structural and functional properties of bariumtitanate based thin films, BaTiO3, Ba1-xSrxTiO3 (x=0,1, 0,2, 0,3 i 0,4) andBaTi1-xZrxO3 (x=0,1 i 0,2), prepared by chemical solution deposition. Metalsalts of BaCO3, C4H6O4Sr and ZrOCl2 H2O and Ti(OCH2CH2CH2CH3)4 wereseparetly disolved in acetic environment and mixed in clear transparent sols.Inkjet printing and spin coating were used for deposition of functional BaTiO3based fims. After deposition prepared films were thermally treated at differenttemperatures up to 1000 °C. In dependence of sol concentration thickness ofobtained films is from 100 to 700 nm and grain size is few tens of nanometers. Structural characterization confirmed changes in structure of barium titanate thinfilms by addition of Sr2+ i Zr4+. Tetragonal (ferroelectric) phase of BaTiO3 isconfirmed by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. On the other hand, decreasingof tetragonality was noticed in doped samples. Changes in functionalityof doped BaTiO3 thin films were analyzed by dielectric and ferroelectric measurements.Performed analysis confirmed ferroelectric behavior of barium titanatethin films, and decrease in ferroelectric answer of doped films. Investigation ofpossibility of complex shaped electrodes preparation, suitable for tunability measurements, by different deposition techniques was the second goal of this research.Sputtering technique in combination with laser removal, inkjet printing and photolithography were used for preparation of complex circular and coplanar electrodeson the surface of barium titanate based thin films. Influence of processingparameters for the each of mentioned technique on dimensional precision of preparedelectrodes was investigated. Selected laser was not appropriate for productionof electrodes on prepared barium titanate based thin films. Inkjet printingwas useful for production of electrodes in micrometer range, but for more sophisticatedgeometries photolithography shows the best performance.

Full textIn less than a decade since the onset of the global economic crisis, more than 2 million people have left Spain in search of work and the possibility of a livable existence. Many of these economic exiles are young and highly qualified, leading some to classify this exodus as a brain drain. Lingering labor market instability and growing mistrust in Spain’s political system portend a challenging future for members of the so-called “lost generation,” both at home and abroad. Meanwhile, many questions remain about the lasting effects and repercussions of the crisis and massive departure of young Spaniards.
In response, the recession and ensuing surge in emigration have been popular themes of economic, demographic and sociological research in recent years; however, the cultural productions representative of this group remain relatively unstudied. The current investigation focuses on a selection of documentary films and fictional literature that portray the experiences of these highly qualified migrants. Through close analysis of these works, narrative patterns and trends appeared. These literary and audiovisual texts manifest the dialectical tensions of exile literature theorized by Sophia McClennen as well as the complex nostalgias of Svetlana Boym. They also reject and redefine the generational terms imposed upon them, express diasporic solidarity and call for political involvement and collective action. The rhetorical undercurrents at work in these constructions of individual and group identity suggest the emergence of an archetypal narrative of the new Spanish migrant. The cultural negotiations implicit in this narrative seem to confirm that sweeping but gradual societal changes are taking effect, even beyond Spain's borders.
