Loots, Lorraine. "A filmic adaptation of the Lorraine Loots's Ek is Suzie." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/11013.

Abstract:
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 13-15).
The aim of the creative project was to adapt an autobiographical illustrated novel, Ek is Suzie, into a screenplay for a full-length feature film. Using a combination of live action and animation, the two main narratives play out parallel to one another – representing the past and present tense. The explication is intended to offer a reflection on the process of writing the screenplay, on filmic influences that shaped it and on the kinds of theory that illuminate what I was trying to accomplish. Thus, I investigate various creative and technical decisions made during the writing of the screenplay – dropping the novel’s narrator, the mixing of languages, the use of dream and, especially, the play between live action and animation. I note the debate on fidelity in adaptation especially as this debate applies to graphic novels and take special account of Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis, not only because of its engagement with the process of adaptation, but also because of it seminal use of animation as a serious medium of communication, dealing with trauma and childhood. Other (popular) filmic influences are In America, My Left Foot and Garden State, dealing with the dominant themes in my screenplay – childhood trauma, self-discovery, friendship, family and love.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis was to analyse the interactive movie Bandersnatch, which is part of the media critical series Black Mirror. The main questions were focused on what Bandersnatch communicate about the power relationship between media and audience, the function of the interactive aspect, and media criticism. A multimodal method and film analysis were used to investigate this. The analysis and discussion were based on several media and communication theories regarding hegemony, mediatization and media criticism. The result showed that Bandersnatch communicate that the audience, and members of a mediatized society, are controlled by the media and the government and therefore does not have free will. This hegemony is upheld by the media that is used to create a false consciousness amongst the public. The interactive aspect of Bandersnatch reinforces this message. Although this is heavily communicated within the film, Black Mirror is not seeking actual reform of the hegemony which leaves the media criticism questionable.

Ndou, Delta Lau Milayo. "“According to social media…” Examining the influence of social media on political reporting within Zimbabwe’s mainstream media." Doctoral thesis, Faculty of Humanities, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/31099.

Full text
Abstract:
The Internet’s liberative qualities have been hyped by a number of Zimbabwean scholars who argue, on the basis of the existence of online alternative media that carries political content, that democratisation can be technology-led. Given that the question of source selection is connected to the democratising potential of the Internet (Lecheler and Kruikemeier, 2016) by some scholars – this study interrogated the liberative potential of the Internet by tracing the social media sourcing patterns of four daily newspapers within Zimbabwe’s polarised mainstream media. Using a mixed methods approach which deployed Actor-Network theory as a preliminary methodological tool, this study collected and evaluated empirical data drawn from 146 social media sourced political stories published over a 30-month period and the responses from semi-structured interviews with purposively sampled participants – to account for the human and non-human actors in the news production network. A social constructivist analytical lens was then used to appreciate the contexts in which social media sourcing was being adopted in newsrooms, which revealed how unique circumstances had triggered unprecedented reliance on social media as a political news source. Those unique circumstances involved an escalation of factional fighting within the ruling ZANU PF that morphed into a propaganda war, which was waged through The Herald newspaper by one faction and through social media by the other faction. The public feud, which played out on social media, forced political reporters to gather story ideas from social media and overly rely on a few tech savvy elite sources. In these circumstances, social media’s influence on the political news agenda was overstated as it was conflated with the influence of a news event (ZANU PF factionalism) and the influence of social media users (high-ranking ZANU PF members) who could not be ignored. It is hoped that the findings of this study will contribute towards filling the lacuna in terms of scholarship demonstrating the influence of social media within Zimbabwe’s political narratives.

Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to examine the differences between the genres War and Crime and how they portray the protagonist and the antagonist. Also how concentrated ownership can cause consequences for the content in movies from our chosen genres. This is examined by top 50 movies within the two genres from IMDb's Box Office listing. The theoretical framework used is Edward Saids description of orientalism. For the nationalism segment a book from Steve Grosby and articles from Kathy Warners and Jason Dittmer is used. Olof Peterssons book Opinionsbildning and an article from Matthew Alford is used for the propaganda segment.  The paper is written based on a quantitative content analysis where we analyzed the US Box Office top 50 movies in the war and Crime genre. We chose quantitative content analysis because we wanted to work with objective answers and get visual statistics. We have used a convenience sample when sampling our movies. To code the chosen movies we created our own code sheet and codebook. We used the program SPSS to get different charts, which we drew results and statistics from. The results from our analysis with the help from our theoretical framework helped bring answers to our questions of issues.  The results show that the market is ownership concentrated with six production companies responsible for the majority. The protagonist for the genre war is mostly an military American man while the antagonist is from Germany or the Middle East and not personified deeper. For Crime the protagonist for the majority is an American man within the police profession or a criminal. The antagonists are criminal American men.  A conclusion from the results is that American production companies make movies for Americans with content focusing on Americans. This strengthens the nationalism within the country simultaneously as it clarifies the enemy by creating a strong “us and them”-feeling. Movies can be used as a channel for propaganda and to affect people's views and values. The concentrated ownership can create difficulties for smaller production companies to compete and spread their message.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In China, Weibo is a social software that almost everyone uses. Weibo does not only provide an arena for users to share their experiences with friends but also offers a platform for companies to promote their products. From 2014, the distributors of the films began to use Weibo as one of their main marketing tools. Nevertheless, from the same time, Chinese art films have begun to decline, and the most direct manifestation is the downturn in the box office. At the coincidence of the two time points, the decline of art films and the Weibo seems to be linked. However, there are still a handful of art films which achieved great success on Weibo in this 3-year period. In these cases, Weibo seems to be a fortune for these art films. The first part of this study is devoted to exploring what has changed in the ways to Weibo users’ get information and communicate about films, especially art films from 2014 to 2017 by social media logic. The second part analyzes a successful case and tries to find out how the distributors of the art films could use Weibo as an online marketing tool to conduct online marketing activities by combing the social media logic with the marketing strategy for non-mainstream culture products. This study used a combination of qualitative research and quantitative research. After analyzing the collected data, it is indicated that during the three years, Weibo users have changed a lot in obtaining movie information and communicating art movies which might have an impact on Weibo users discussing art films and purchasing tickets. Weibo can also be utilized by art films distributors using idiosyncratic marketing approach than ordinary method to attract audience's attention.

Bodi, Anna E. "Patty Hearst: A Media Heiress Caught in Media Spectacle." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2013. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/cmc_theses/639.

Full text
Abstract:
In 1974, decades before foreign terrorists became a fixture in the American consciousness, the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA), an American domestic terrorist group, abducted nineteen-year-old media heiress Patricia (Patty) Hearst. The abduction kicked off a four decade multi-faceted media spectacle. The media and public raptly followed Hearst’s imprisonment as a hostage, apparent conversion to SLA revolutionary and criminal, eventual rescue and arrest, trial and conviction, presidential pardon, marriage to her bodyguard, half-hearted career as an actress, and ultimate withdrawal from the public eye. Along the way, the media portrayal of Hearst twisted and turned. She was the heiress, the hostage, the criminal, the victim, depending on the moment in time. The varying depictions of Hearst reflected evolving events, but also specific images of Hearst that captured the attention of the American public and the media. Resonant images of Hearst from her kidnapping, arrest, trial, and release – spanning the five years from 1974 to 1979 – demonstrate that the heiress’s case became a magnification of American anxieties of the time concerning celebrity, feminism and gender, the radicalization of youth, and terrorism. In a time dominated by print, radio, and television media, Hearst’s portrayal showcased the media spectacle as cultural parable for a controversial time.

Daniel C Hallin and Paolo Mancini's Comparing Media Systems (2004) has been hailed as an important contribution to understanding the inter-relationship between the media and political systems. The work was, however, based on a study of 18 stable, mature and highly developed democracies either in Europe or in North America. As an emerging democracy that has recently undergone dramatic change in both its political system and its media, South Africa's inclusion poses particular challenges to Hallin and Mancini's Three Models paradigm. This thesis focuses on the South African print media and tests both the paradigm's theoretical underpinnings as well as its four principle dimensions of analysis: political parallelism, state intervention, development of a mass market and journalistic professionalisation. A range of insights and a number of modifications are proposed. This thesis is based on interviews with South Africa's most senior media executives and editors, a comprehensive study of the relevant literature and 15 years of personal experience as a political analyst, columnist and parliamentary correspondent covering South Africa's transition from apartheid to democracy. The thesis sheds new light on the functioning and applicability of the Three Models comparative paradigm as well as on the development and future trajectory of South African print media journalism.

Abstract:

Vårt urval består av tre scener i filmen Pirates of the Caribbean – Svarta pärlans förbannelse.

This research is towards the advancement of filmosophy as a progressive new approach to how we think about, and through, film. This explorative research aims to introduce, contextualise, and expand upon the thoughts and writings of Daniel Frampton, as found in his 2006 manifesto: Filmosophy. In order to provide a suitable platform from which to introduce Frampton’s contemporary concepts (i.e. ‘filmind’ and ‘fluid film-thinking’), this paper first outlines and discusses the various ways in which philosophy and film are said to overlap, culminating in a critical discussion of ‘film-as-philosophy’ in terms of the implications it posits for providing innovative philosophical contributions through uniquely cinematic means (the ‘problem of paraphrase’). This literature review concludes by presenting and discussing filmosophy and its major tenets as both an appropriate extension of the current canon, and as a potentially productive new paradigm through which both film and philosophy can be critically considered and advanced.

Material/Method: The film Catch me if you can and the book with the same name has been used to analyze the differences between them. I have divided the differences into three categories: Crossed out, Altered and Added. In the analysis section these have been presented in each section of the film.

Main results: Catch me if you can is definetly a film made with the design of the Anglosaxon model, mostly because of its timestructure and that it portrays an action and not just a condition which is normal in the epic-lyric model. Big parts of the story have been crossed out, altered and added to make the film more acceptabel to the audience. Most of the changeshad been done to make the story shorter to fit the timeframe of a film. Events had been joinedtogether to save time but not miss anything. A character, Hanratty, has been reinforced to create a cat-and-mouse story and add excitement to the film. Other changes have been made to make the main character seem more likeable to the audience.

Keywords: book, film, dramaturgy, Catch me if you can, anglo-saxon, epic-lyric

Abstract:
Research on the effects of media violence indicates that, at least under laboratory conditions, observation of violent stimuli leads to increased aggression. Numerous theories have been formulated to account for this effect, and most have received a degree of empirical support. This has led to theoretical fragmentation of the research. It is argued that a basic conceptual framework is required to guide future progress. It has further been shown that a number of factors affect the extent to which reactions are observed. It is argued that any comprehensive theory of the effects of media violence must take account of the role of individual, film and situational factors, and the possible importance of reactions other than aggression. Two similar theories separately advanced by Berkowitz [1984] and Huesmann [1986], based respectively on the priming of an associative network of aggression related responses, and the encoding and retrieval of aggression related scripts, may jointly have the potential to form such a comprehensive conceptual framework. Previous theories may be considered as special extensions of the Berkowitz/Huesmann model. A series of experiments was performed to test the predictions of this theory, examining the influence of multiple individual difference and film factors on groups of conceptually related affective, cognitive and physiological responses. Findings indicated that violent films prime responses associated with both aggression and anxiety. These results are better interpreted within Berkowitz's later [1993] model of the formation of anger, and suggest that Huesmann's model should be expanded to include anxiety related scripts. It was established that both film and individual factors influence the nature and intensity of viewer reactions, but the way in which they do this is not entirely clear. Ways are suggested in which future research may provide information abut how this occurs.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis reports on research examining the habituation of emotional variables to filmed violence. The following subjective emotional variables were assessed: positive feelings, anxiety, disgust, entertainment and anger. In addition, an objective measure of emotional response was recorded physiologically, using the startle eyeblink response. The mediating influence of personality, individual differences and contextual features on an individuals’ perception of and reaction to filmed violence were also explored. Study one was exploratory in nature served to identify and select the film stimuli to be employed in the subsequent studies. The primary aim of the study was to allow for the identification of violent stimuli considered to be most socially and culturally relevant. The present research builds on existing scientific literature which has began to appreciate that differences in the context of a portrayal holds important implications for its impact on viewers. Thus, a secondary and more specific desire of study one was to obtain an evaluation of the contextual features of the violent film segments. A sample of 30 participants viewed and rated the film stimuli on the variables of realism, fantasy and violence. From this exploratory study four violent film stimuli were subsequently employed. Study 2 used the eyeblink startle response proposed by Vrana, Spence and Lang (1988) to explore the habituation of emotional variables to a realistic depiction of filmed violence. Emotional response was assessed both objectively, using the eyeblink startle response and subjectively through individuals self-reports. In addition the study investigated the significance of individual differences as mediators of emotional response. Questionnaire and physiological data were obtained from 30 participants. Overall, repeated exposure to filmed violence resulted in a decline in both objective and subjective emotional response. Differences were identified in the manner in which men and women responded to the film. Women reacted initially and over time with more intense physiological and psychological reactions to the violent film than males. Specifically, men displayed more curiosity and reported greater entertainment and positive feelings in response to the film, whilst women found the violence more disgusting and reported higher levels of anger and anxiety. It was found that the eyeblink startle magnitude paralleled the subjective emotional processing of the violent film, thus providing further confirmatory evidence of its validity in the investigation of emotional reactions to a stimulus. Personality factors were found to mediate emotional response to filmed violence, with neuroticism most powerfully implicated. High levels of neuroticism were found to be associated with greater anger and anxiety and less positive feelings whilst viewing violent film. A high score on extraversion was correlated with higher levels of anger and lower levels of curiosity and entertainment. Whilst the aims of study 3 were identical to that of study 2, a variation in the contextual feature of the violent film stimuli under investigation was the distinguishing and pertinent feature. Study 2 provided data on the habituation of emotional response to a realistic depiction of filmed violence. Study 3 was concerned with emotional response over repeated exposure to a fantasized violent depiction. Therefore, allowing for a comparison regarding the effects of context on emotional response. The results of study 3, with respect to habituation of emotional response, personality and individual differences, were similar to that obtained in study 2. A comparison of the two studies, however, revealed that individuals responded significantly different to the contextual features of the violent portrayal. Compared to the fantasised portrayal the realistic film stimulus was reported to be more digusting, anxiety provoking and less entertaining. In addition, and not surprisingly respondents reported that the realistic portrayal resulted in the production of more anger and less positive feelings.

Nelson, Jodi. "Digital technologies, social media and emerging, alternative documentary production methodologies." Thesis, University of Sussex, 2015. http://sro.sussex.ac.uk/id/eprint/54595/.

Abstract:
My research is a practice-based project involving documentary production and theoretical analysis of emerging forms of documentary and online co-collaboration, exploring paradigm shifts in digital technology particularly in the web-based feminist activism and feminist social praxis. The practice-led research explores new forms of production practices outside traditional methodologies and dissemination. Specifically, by utilizing cheap digital technology tools and working within online social networking platforms the research theoretically analyses what means were available towards online participatory media practices to create new documentary forms. My research aims are therefore to investigate how the new paradigm shifts in digital technology and the democratization of the filmmaking process, through online, collaborative practice, can allow women documentary filmmakers to connect to a global marketplace outside the traditional filmmaking channels. Further, looking at the history of the documentary form, as well as the feminist movement, I am interested in which of the key themes and debates that have characterized their intersection are still important at this moment of changing and emerging technologies. Can new technologies, access to cheap digital tools and collaborative modes of practice help or hinder the creative process of making a digital documentary? In examining the history of feminist filmmaking and the emerging documentary shifts in production offered the opportunity to position my own practice within these traditions and experiment further with online forms of modality. This experiment allowed me to gather empirical data using new media practices (i.e. creation and curation of online and repurposed content, use of new production tools within online spaces) to create a first person, auto-ethnographic narrative on the subject of feminism and online activism. Additionally, my research looks at the theoretical and historical underpinnings surrounding feminist filmmaking, new documentary practices and its implications within new technologies, and the emerging forms of collaborative online modes of practice. Each of these areas will intersect within the three key areas of debate surrounding documentary filmmaking; those of 1) narrativity, 2) witness and 3) ethics. My practice investigates these interactive, participatory modes created with emerging technologies and online audiences and how this is shifting narratives, audience reception and producing new ethical debates around ‘truth' and ‘authenticity' as these lines are continually blurred. Rethinking documentary in the virtual space brings about new challenges to the old debates around evidence, witness and ethics, as it is the product of a more democratic attitude towards practice, distribution and dissemination of its stories. New participatory audiences are now also helping to create the very product they are witnessing. Therefore, creating media within the public sphere can bring about a wealth of new tools, wider contributions to media making and a more global awareness of its dissemination. But it is not without its controversy and challenges. Further, my research looks at how working within this co-collaborative mode, the position of filmmaker as the ‘sole' creator or ‘auteur' comes into question. It discuses the advantages and/or the disadvantages to this approach and in doing so looks at what contributions and challenges an online audience can provide to support the filmmaker that cannot be gained through historical and traditional production and exhibition forms. What once was a higher barrier to entry into the film business is now a more open and online accessibility where anyone can wield a cheap camera or mobile phone device, make a movie and share it on the internet. These newfound democratic practices could potentially disrupt an already complex system of communication practices. However, it could also supply it with a much-needed collective idea bank for tackling global issues and finding sustainable solutions. Within the scope of participatory practices, a first person filmmaker can experience the greatest of democratic freedom within the confines of this process and delivery. The research is supported and conducted through a practice-led film project, web support platform (including blog and social media sites) and published case study. The final output film project around which these questions are posed is entitled: “Single Girl in a Virtual World: What does a 21st Century Feminist Look Like?”. The film's purpose is therefore to engage an online global audience of participants and contributors to the film's narrative thread by asking for contributions within the production, creation and financing of the documentary film. The practice utilizes social networks, crowd funding initiatives, web blogs, viral video, virtual chat interaction and traditional modes of documentary practice in its methodology in an effort to collect data surrounding activity and attempt to answer my research questions at large. The overall objective is to create an online documentary film that exemplifies feminist activism in a new frame through application of documentary modes and new emerging digital media practices.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the recent developments that have occurred in the independent film market after the major Hollywood studios created their own specialty divisions to produce and distribute independent films. Due to the involvement of the major studios, independent films became more mainstream while their various costs were also driven up due to the increased amount of independent films that were released by the studios. The financial crisis of 2008 forced the major studios to contract their production of independent films and this contraction allowed the prices of independent films to return to more stable levels.

Abstract:
Over the years the medicine has been developing rapidly and along with it develop methods and diagnostic procedures. These methods become faster, more accurate and less invasive thanks to the development of diagnostic devices each day minors and producing reliable answers. The biosensors are undoubtedly the major responsible for miniaturization, cheaper and rapidity of various diagnostic methods and clinical procedures used every day. Among the different types of existing biosensors, we highlight the biosensors grounded in field effect transistors (FETs), more precisely the biosensor based in extended gate field effect transistor (EGFET). We analyzed on this work measurement procedures using tin oxide thin films doped with fluorine (or fluorine tin oxide FTO) as sensitive the membrane to H+ ions bounded to the gate of an EGFET, which can serve as a basis for building a biosensor in the future. Articles has already been written reporting the use of the FTO as sensitive membrane to ion H+ and OH-. However, none article available makes a good control of some parameters, in some cases relatively simple, or if they do not make it clear the way they are controlling these parameters. These parameters are of crucial importance in the final response of the sensors since they interfere significantly in signal of the sensors. So, we shown in this work, which parameters as light, the sequence in which the pHs are measured by the sample, the cleaning procedure of samples and even the morphological characteristics of the samples are important in the process of adsorption and ion withdrawal of membrane surface. We shown also that each sample requires a different routine on the following measures and even cleaning procedures for your maximum income is, and how different samples evolve over time. As a solution to the problems cited, we describe the correct use of two samples that showed reproducibility in your data and invariance between the results collected by different sequences of measures. Finally, we leave a proposal on the dynamics that occurs during adsorption processes and withdrawal ion H+ and OH- on the surface of the films. Based on our proposal did theoretical calculations estimated quantity of loads that are adsorb on the surface of the film for the different situations encountered during experiments.

This essay will analyse how the components settings and costume/make-up from the concept Mise-en-scène show the differences between homosexual characters and heterosexual characters. The representations and stereotypes that made the differences visible together with the theory of semiotic and what signs we interpret in the films help us find the connection between the settings, costume/make-up and stereotypes. Together with the social Mise-en- scène this essay analyses three Swedish films with homosexual main characters and their love lifes. Previous research focuses on the homosexual representation in films so we can see how the homosexual characters earlier has been represented. The analysis uses the components settings and costume/make-up to look into the aspect of stereotypes and representations of homosexual characters compared to heterosexual ones.

Abstract:

This report is the result of a master thesis at Linköping´s University. The report deals with project models that can be applied at projects where information materials are developed. The idea to this thesis was developed when SSAB ordered an information film that was going to be used in purchases with new suppliers. The film was going to illustrate how the products of SSAB should be handled. The film project was extensive and to manage creating a film with a satisfactory result, the workflow demanded good structure. Different project models were examined, and when no model that suited this kind of project was found, an own model was created, the EUF-model. The model was developed and tested at the film project at SSAB. Afterward the model could be evaluated and improved were weakness was discovered in the model.

The result was a model that can be used when manufacturing information material, where the model can be adjusted to the specific project. The model was only evaluated on a film project, which biased the result. But the expectations are that the EUF-model can be used on all modes of information materials, such as film, folders and information pages on the Internet.
